Tammi is a sober, dignified, creative woman whose journey in sobriety began in 2015. Tammi started exploring creativity the year before she got sober, but it was after she got sober that she really dived into the creative world and even went back to college to major in Art. She shares how she incorporated her story of recovery into many parts of her schooling, and we discuss how creativity such as writing or creating art can help aid recovery. Tammi talks about her struggle to continue with the same kind of active social life she had before she got sober, and we discuss the beauty of forming friendships and building connections with other people in recovery. We also talk about preparing and setting boundaries for ourselves at social events, and how vital it is for our comfort and enjoyment when we choose to participate in those activities. You can find Tammi on Instagram @tammisalas or on her website https://www.tammisalas.com/.Tammi is a member of the Confident Sober Women Facebook group so you can certainly connect with her there as well. This is probably the most vulnerable episode I've ever put out. For the last few years, I've pretty much stopped drinking alcohol. I do drink from time to time, but VERY rarely, maybe 1-3 times per year. I don't consider myself an alcoholic whatsoever, I'm a grey area drinker, but along the way, alcohol began to make me feel like absolutely terrible, both in my brain & my body. Drinking was simply not worth the cost. Since mostly giving up alcohol, every single area of my life has improved. I feel more at home in my skin and more connected to myself. I cannot be who I want to be, and do the work I want to do in this world, if I am drinking alcohol. For me, I can have one or the other, and giving up alcohol for the most part is a no-brainer. It wasn't easy to get here, but it has been 100% worth it. I hope to have more conversations around this subject in our current society where alcohol is glorified. I know it works for some, but for others, it REALLY doesn't, and I'm putting myself out there for those who feel called to give it up but cannot imagine doing so, especially because of social pressure. Jolene and Aidan talk about how social media and Instagram initially brought them together to start this podcast. They discuss how online platforms have played a role in changing how we think about drinking. It has become easy to quickly form online alcohol-free communities and the alcohol conversation is shifting because of podcasts, blogs, Instagram, and FaceBook groups. There is a sense of accessibility that is powerful and good. People can dabble and be "sober curious" at a distance. They can listen and participate at their own comfort level. The community of people becoming interested in this alcohol-free lifestyle is growing. But then there is a flip side to social media as well. Are we hiding behind our computer screens? Face-to-face interaction is an important ingredient as well. She Recovers provides a great in person conference once a year. But do we need more on-going in-person alcohol-free conversations in our local communities? There can be a powerful connection, story, and vulnerability within social media, but we also filter aspects of our lives on social media too. Jolene and Aidan end by sharing some of their favorite Instagram handles - TheSoberGlow, Tammi Salas, Cleo Wade, Wild Soul Healing, Tell Better Stories 2018, and The_Numinous who also hosts the in-person NYC Club Soda events. In the end, look at the balance between your in-person and online communities. Follow and unfollow in whatever way feels good to you. In this episode, I’m honored to talk with fellow sober sister, Tammi Salas. Tammi is a multi-talented woman in the middle of life who is challenging herself every step of the way. From her blog, daily gratitude practice (that she shares on Instagram) and her podcast, to her unique and inspiring paintings; she is thriving and evolving! Some of the topics that we talked about is Tammi's decision to quit drinking at forty-four, and how she found her way to AA. I've always been curious as to what goes on in meetings, and today is the first day I've ever asked anyone about it. Tammi shares her experience in a very comforting and open way. Tammi also shares an essay she wrote on Mamalode back in 2014 when she turned forty-three, called Snap! When I read it, I knew that my listeners would get so much from it and, for that, I'm so grateful to Tammi for letting us in on it. We talk about her experience as a college student at forty-seven and what that feels and looks like to her. Also, her decision to stop coloring her hair, and what she thinks about her grey locks. It was so much fun learning more about Tammi, right down to the hairs on her chin. Enjoy this girl talk and tag myself and Tammi on Instagram when you listen and tell us what you think. This episode is perfect for anyone who is pondering a change in their lives, whether it's around shifting your relationship with alcohol or not. You'll hear me talk about how my consideration of the words "sobriety" and "recovery" have changed throughout the years, how I'm feeling about my decision to quit drinking and how I've been able to stay committed to my decision. You'll also hear me share about why it's important to remember that there's no secret formula to success and that we all have to find our own way. This is key! We turn the tables today and Sondra interviews Tammi. The OG Cali girl, Tammi talks about being very driven and a need for gold stars, opting for a career path but how her love of Martha Stewart sparked her creative flame. Always a seeker, even when her drinking amped up after a divorce, she eventually found herself blogging and journaling to find the good things, “I wanted proof of life”. Getting into recovery opened the door for going back to school for art and then led to all of the creative things that Tammi currently pursues (and that we love her for). “If I didn't have that journal and that pen, I would have bolted.” The ladies share their top three things in their recovery-slash-creativity toolbox for the week: Sondra's 3 fave things: Her kids' improv, embroidery on a rainy day and old family photos. Tammi's 3 fave things: The Good Life Project podcast from 3/23/17 titled “Don't Just Ship It”, her Instagram girl crush Tracy@shutterbean, and the slim cans of Perrier Sparkling Mineral Water.
“I literally woke up on morning and just wanted to stop everything and make them all.”—Sondra on the insistence of creative inspiration. Tammi Salas of http://TammiSalas.com and Sondra Primeaux of http://TheUnruffled.com talk sobriety, recovery, and creativity.
