You've changed over the last 10 years — right? We all have, but how often do we stop and look back to think about how far we've actually come? We are so used to hustling forward and not celebrating ourselves or what we have overcome, that we often miss that the journey can be a revitalizing reward. But it can be hard to focus on the good when everything around us does not seem so great. If you've felt overwhelmed, insecure, or stuck in seemingly never-ending cycles of self-doubt, stagnate energy and feel disempowered by life circumstances you are not alone. Learning how to embrace reinvention and navigate uncertainty can be a challenge if we feel hopeless, which is why I invited my good friend Andrea Owen back on the Awakened & Aligned Podcast. Andrea's a renowned life coach and author, and she shares how she took action and faced dissatisfaction with her life head on, changing her path forever. In the latest edition of her first book, 52 Ways to Live a Kick-Ass Life, she talks about the power of looking inward and uncovering our inner badass as we strive for our full potential and confront all the things holding us back.

My guest today is Andrea Owen. Andrea and I connect over our love of coaching and keeping things real and authentic (and our matching ‘surrender' tattoos!). Andrea shares what she's working on with her own two teenagers right now, and I ask how we can shift our perspective to view parenting challenges as invitations instead of just focusing on problems. We talk about how we can trust that things will work out okay, and Andrea shares what questions she asks people to help them discover their values and why value work is important. We dig into how we don't know the impacts of our parenting, how our kids experience it, or how we will all remember what happened. Lastly, I ask Andrea how she coaches parents to move into a more present way of being in their relationship. Takeaways from the show How our own teenage years impact our parenting Viewing challenges as invitations Trusting that things are going to be okay Defining your values: What's important to you? What's important about the way you live your life? Sometimes I record minisodes that I need to hear for my own personal or professional life, and this is definitely one of them! I know a lot of you who listen to the podcast probably consume a decent amount of personal growth podcasts, books, etc. and that's a great thing! However, the thing to watch out for is perfectionism and/or high achievement in personal growth because that can be detrimental. Some questions to ask yourself to see if this might be you: Are you consuming so much self help that you forget that it's okay to be human? That life hurts and is hard sometimes? Do you compare where you are to others, and feel bad that you're not where you think you're supposed to be? Do you forget sometimes that it's completely normal to feel like shit at times, to go through incredibly challenging seasons and not have ways to get out of it? Please remember that we don't always have to be in a state of perpetual forward movement. Sometimes we move back, and sometimes we are still. It's never linear. In addition, there will be times in your life where you have some or even a lot of negative self-talk. I close this minisode out with reading an excerpt from Make Some Noise about his topic, as well as a little pep talk at the end. You know that feeling when you want to change the story in your head? Our brains love stories, and sometimes, facing situations without clear endings, we create our own inner narratives. Learn how to recognize when you're crafting your own stories, and choose a different, more empowering narrative by learning self-compassion and awareness techniques. “When did I hand over all of my power and all of my strength and all of myself and believe these lies when my intuition had told me that something was wrong?” Andrea – 4:53 Writing and controlling your narrative instead of settling for sabotage means using awareness. Today I'm welcoming back frequent guest Andrea Owen to chat about the new edition of her book, How to Stop Feeling Like Shit: 14 Habits That Are Holding You Back from Happiness. We talk about aging well, not allowing shame to control us, and recognizing the importance of our own feelings. When told by older women that she would one day settle into her age and things would get easier, author Kaya Oakes thought, “Apparently at some point I would reach a magical age when I had ‘no fucks left to give.' But no one had warned me that before I hit that magical age, I'd have to survive my forties.” If it's not your face falling down, your bladder starting a coup, your hair falling out, or needing waaaaay too much sleep (I mean, this is unreasonable, isn't it?), then it's dealing with feeling invisible, grappling with your identity shifts, and wondering if it's only going to get worse. Now don't get me wrong, I know I have it easy. I know being in my forties is far from the end of the world. But something is for sure changing and I don't hear a bunch of folks talking about it. In fact, when I look at social media, television, or other media, middle-age women seem to be visible only when advertising fiber supplements. Try searching any stock photo site for middle-age women and you'll get a ton of women in their nineties… almost like we've been erased. In this candid and very non-expert discussion, I chat with my very best friend, Andrea Owen, on what we've been processing as we process changes of mid-life. This episode is an inside look into two 40-somethings discussing what it feels like to constantly advocate for your health, reckon with physical changes, and what we actually love most about aging. If you've been wandering around like, “What is this body!? What is this life!?” then pull up an ear, my friend. You are not alone. This pod explores: Understanding the “ambiguous grief” of navigating changes in your forties The currency of beauty and youth in our culture and how that affects you as you age How we each approach feminism as we find botox and fillers more appealing The connection between the personal growth industry and being transparent about middle age ____ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Why is it such a big deal for a woman to look her age or older? Speaker and coach Andrea Owen has let her hair go gray, she's done being obsessed with her looks, but she's not yet feeling empowered by aging. This week, she talks with Erin about grieving youth while still navigating vanity and beauty standards. Britt Frank is a licensed psychotherapist, trauma specialist, and author of The Science of Stuck. She holds a BA from Duke University and an MSW from the University of Kansas, where she later became an award-winning adjunct instructor. Britt is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Level 3 training in Internal Family Systems. I was introduced to Britt via a past SMA guest, Andrea Owen. Andrea suspected Britt and I would hit it off and she was spot on. Britt's work involves all the mental health stuff I love to geek out on. We dig into a lot around trauma and dysfunction and dysregulation in this conversation. I think you will find Britt's work to be as fascinating as I did! And you MUST read her book, The Science of Stuck - a brilliant compilation of stories, science, and strategies to help you heal your mind. Listen in to hear Britt share: How her “normal” upbringing made her dismiss her childhood trauma How function and dysfunction can coexist in our lives for years, if not decades - and the costs to our lives over time How dissociating into academics became her coping mechanism and why dissociation into high achieving is common for trauma survivors The necessity of suffering in order to process grief and trauma and get to a place of peace and joy Why celebrating tiny wins is a powerful brain hack that positively our nervous system The impact of the global trauma over the last few years, including why our trauma responses might be coming down the road and could show up as PTSD if we aren't aware of the trauma we have endured Why trauma is inevitable and PTSD is preventable How to set our children up to process their inevitable trauma The #1 thing a parent can do for their children's mental health Links mentioned: Connect with Britt: Scienceofstuck.com Book: The Science of Stuck Book: Trauma Proofing Your Kids Britt on IG Sponsor info and promo codes: Please find our sponsor information here: shamelessmom.com/sponsor/ Interested in becoming a sponsor of the Shameless Mom Academy?
