Picture this: you pour a glass to “take the edge off,” promising yourself it's only lubrication for the soul. Instead, each sip thickens an invisible wall between you and the feelings you most want to meet. By the time the bottle yawns empty, that wall feels ten bricks higher, but the pain still pulses on the other side. Millions repeat this nightly ritual, not realising they are anaesthetising the very radar they need for authentic joy, intuition, and resilience. In the next few pages we'll unpack how alcohol sabotages emotional flow, clouds spiritual perception, and—crucially—how people everywhere are smashing through the block to find something altogether numinous on the other side.Ready to quit drinking? Quick question: how many brain cells would you happily trade for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc? Most of us would answer “none,” yet that is the quiet swap that takes place each time we drink. For decades, alcohol marketing painted scenes of witty toasts and genius writers crafting best-sellers with a tumbler by the keyboard. Reality tells a duller truth: MRI scanners now show measurable shrinkage of the brain in people who average one drink a day. Cognitive tests confirm slower learning and patchy recall.Ready to quit drinking? Imagine, no more hangovers! Let's be honest, shall we? Changing anything about ourselves—whether it's dropping a few pounds, kicking a bad habit, or finally learning to play the guitar instead of just air-jamming to Led Zeppelin—is a bit like trying to herd cats while riding a unicycle and juggling flaming torches. It's bloody hard. But when it comes to quitting drinking, the stakes are higher, the demons are louder, and the excuses are as plentiful as cheap lager at a student union bar. So, how do you get the mindset to change anything, especially something as sneaky and seductive as booze? Thinking you might need to stop drinking? This episode is for you.As we kick off the New Year, many folks attempt to give up alcohol in what's commonly called “Dry January”. But for many veterans, drinking becomes more than just a social vice … it can have dangerous, criminal and even deadly consequences. We talked with former Navy Destroyer Commanding Officer, Jay Wylie, who shared his battle with booze, and how drinking went from a coping mechanism, to collapsing his military career.Tracing the origins of his drinking to college, Wylie described a military culture that appeared to embrace it. He shared a remorseful look at his drinking problem, “I ended up getting so drunk and stupid on liberty with a couple of female crew members, that I broke every rule in the Captain's book.” His booze-fueled behavior eventually led to conviction on sexual assault charges, which resulted in; being relieved of command of USS Momsen (DDG-92), court martialed, and sentenced to 42 months. In hindsight Wylie revealed, “as painful as that was… that's what it took to get me sober.”He also shared the steps he personally took to end the destructive pattern caused by his out of control drinking. Now with 13 years of sobriety, he's dedicated to helping other veterans quit drugs and alcohol.Wylie also shared how his work with Confidential Recovery, in San Diego, helps guide clients through the 12-Step process, and works with VA recovery services to help vets get the treatment they need, before suffering severe alcohol related consequences. He also offers insight on whether cannabis is helpful, or just another vice.As veterans (and even non-veterans) look to goals of self-improvement in the new year, Wylie's story reveals there is hope and resources for veterans searching for a way to break the cycle and begin a better life. Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by the journey to quit drinking, like there are a million things to figure out all at once? Or maybe you've wondered why it feels like a game of Whac-a-Mole with new habits popping up to replace old ones. If so, you're not alone, and you're definitely in the right place. In this episode, I'm breaking down three surprising traps that no one talks about when it comes to quitting drinking. These sneaky obstacles can easily keep you stuck, frustrated, and questioning your progress. But today, we're getting into what they are—and more importantly, how to avoid them. The “Advanced Topic” Trap: We'll talk about how to stay focused on the “now” without getting distracted by what's miles down the road. The “Fix Everything” Trap: Overloading yourself with too many changes at the same time only adds stress. The “Compulsion Replacement” Trap: Here's a big one. Your brain naturally looks for ways to soothe, distract, or reward itself—and when alcohol isn't an option, it's common to replace it with other compulsive habits, like food, shopping, or even social media. I'll share tips on how to recognize this tendency, so you can create healthier coping mechanisms and feel empowered to stay on track. Each of these traps can quietly hold you back, but with a little insight and the right tools, you can recognize them and break free. So, if you're ready to quit drinking and finally feel in control without feeling overwhelmed by distractions and pitfalls, this episode is a must-listen. It's time to give yourself grace, simplify the journey, and know that every small step is a win on the path to a sober, fulfilling life. The REAL reason for feeling some depression or symptoms of depression when you quit drinking alcohol. And one of these may be something you've never heard of. If you've ever used alcohol to deal with feelings of depression, you may have found that after your buzz wears off, you feel even lower than before. It's a chicken and egg situation – which came first? Were you struggling because you were drinking, or were you drinking because you were struggling? Well, both can be true. Drinking can increase depression – but depression is also linked to heavier alcohol use. There are a few things to be aware of to make sense of what you may be feeling and, more importantly, help you cope and have the understanding that it is fixable. Sara and Heather discuss the topic of rediscovering yourself after quitting drinking. They discuss how alcohol can cloud one's true identity, leading individuals to question who they are without it. They highlight the science behind why people feel low after quitting due to dopamine depletion and how this affects motivation and pleasure. The episode offers three approaches to finding oneself again, including understanding and managing the ego, breaking free from the comparison trap, and a unique exercise to help listeners identify their true selves. It can be, yes but if you have a drinking problem, quitting drinking is way easier than riding alcohol off into the sunset of self-destruction. Here are some reasons why it can be a challenge: 1) Your body has to detoxify itself form the chemical alcohol. 2) You are going to have to learn some new routines and make new habits. 3) You need to start building friendships where alcohol isn't the foundation. 4) Accept that boredom is a normal and healthy life experience. Here are some glorious truths about quitting drinking: 1) After 14-21 days you are going to get out of the brain fog and want more of the new “good-feeling” thing. 2) No more checking message to see what you said the night before, you'll remember the book you read, less sick days at work, and more money in your bank account. 3) Your dopamine system rebalances. 4) You are living life at face value and when we do that, we can start to build the life that no longer requires alcohol. Go Brewing. Use the code ELEVATOR for 15% off. [10:27] Kris introduces Tonya: Tonya has been married for 21 years and they have two children who both attend the University of Minnesota. She recently left the corporate world to be an in-home professional organizer. She enjoys her work as well as cooking, tending her plants and in recovery she is always up for trying new things. Tonya was born into a deeply religious family. They attended church daily along with going to school there. She says they were forced to pray for forgiveness everyday which left her feeling like a bad person. Tonya didn't drink until college because she didn't want to be like her father who was an alcoholic. There was typical college-age partying, but Tonya says she always went a little further than everyone else. Some of her behavior led to losing friends and being seen as a liability on their travels. As she got older and wanted to get married and have kids, she was able to slow the drinking down a bit, but still drank heavily while out of town for work. Having postpartum depression after her daughter was born, Tonya found she was using alcohol to cope with life. Over time her family started becoming concerned about her drinking, so she went to rehab for the first time. She didn't end up being able to quit and struggled with the AA program. She would attend rehab five more times and while she learned a lot about the psychology and science behind alcohol and addiction, she didn't actually quit. Shortly after her 2nd DWI, Tonya lost her job for reasons that didn't include alcohol although she admits she was physically addicted and drinking on the job. Unable to find another job she ended up sinking into her drinking and says she spent a year doing nothing else. After nearly ending her life, she realized that she didn't want to do that to her daughter. She was at the end of her rope and ready to give recovery and AA another try. Tonya started going to different AA meetings and got a sponsor. She is grateful that she found community because she knows she couldn't have done it on her own. Tonya's favorite resource in recovery: Everything AA app, the AA and RE communities. Tonya's parting piece of guidance: Time. Things will get better in time. One day at a time. Get involved in community. Café RE – promo code OPPORTUNITY waives set up fee.
