Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Deanna Van Buren and Adrienne Hogg to the Restorative Works! Podcast.  We are joined by Deanna Van Buren, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Designing Justice + Designing Spaces (DJDS), and Adrienne Hogg, Co-Executive Director of Community Works. Together, we explore how spaces, rooms, buildings, and environments in which we gather directly shape our nervous systems, our sense of dignity, and our ability to repair harm. Deanna reframes "trauma-informed design" as designing for well-being, offering a body–mind–spirit lens on how spaces can regulate, inspire, and care for us. Adrienne shares how Community Works brings this philosophy to life by creating warm, culturally rooted, non-institutional spaces where young people, survivors, families, and staff feel seen, grounded, and capable of restoration.  From reimagining classroom design in higher education to redefining what justice spaces can communicate, the conversation weaves together architecture, community wisdom, creative practice, and systems change. Both guests illuminate how co-designing that deeply involves communities, including those most impacted by harm, becomes its own restorative practice.  Deanna Van Buren is the co-founder and executive director of Designing Justice + Designing Spaces. An architecture and real estate nonprofit working to end mass incarceration through place-based solutions, DJDS builds infrastructure that addresses its root causes: poverty, racism, unequal access to resources, and the criminal justice system itself. Van Buren has been profiled by  The New York Times and has written op-eds on the intersection of design and mass incarceration in outlets such as Politico, Architectural Record, and Stanford Social Innovation Review. Her TEDWomen talk on what a world without prisons could look like has been viewed more than one million times. She is the only architect to have been awarded the Rauschenberg Artist as Activist fellowship, and she is also the recipient of UC Berkeley's Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Prize and Professorship. Van Buren received her bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Virginia and her master's degree from Columbia University, and she is an alumna of the Loeb Fellowship at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.  Adrienne Hogg is co-executive director at Community Works.  In this role, she focuses on finance, administration, and operations in addition to working with her co-executive director on strategic and development activities. Prior to joining Community Works, Adrienne founded Gather Locally, a startup e-commerce technology company.  Before starting Gather Locally, Adrienne was the head of finance and controller for several public and private corporations in the life sciences and construction industries, where she managed accounting, finance, human resources, legal, and facilities. Returning migrants and refugees to their home countries is a highly complex process. As the EU puts the spotlight on return in its agenda, there has been a focus on streamlining the coordination, processes, and cooperation between host, transit, and countries of origin. But equally important, return is a very personal issue for the returnees themselves. In this episode, ICMPD's Dries Lensen and Peter Neelen explain the complexities and sensitivities of return. They also touch on how ICMPD works with EU Member States and (partner) countries of origin, as well as return counsellors, and digitalisation tools. All of these to ensure the whole process of going back and reintegrating into society is safe, humane, dignified, transparent, effective, and sustainable for the returnees. I have a love/hate relationship with prayer. On the one hand, I find it hard to do consistently. On the other, I question its effectiveness. In this episode, I explore prayer in light of Eugene Peterson's book, Reversed Thunder, and have changed my opinions on prayer somewhat.

A woman named Lori from Lexington shares a powerful, hope-filled, and heartfelt call-to-arms for all the men out there trying to live with purity and strength in a world full of distractions. This is the kind of encouragement you’ll want to keep in your back pocket: Brothers, You Were Born for Battle Lori gets it: life is full of struggles, and custody of the eyes (aka, keeping your eyes and heart pure) is a tough one. But here’s what she says: “You were made for this battle.” Not just called to it. Not assigned it like a boring chore. You were built for it. Reframe the Fight Instead of saying, “This is too hard,” Lori wants men to think: “This is hard... because it matters. And I was made to rise to it.” You’re not fighting against women; you’re fighting for their dignity, even when they don’t realize it themselves. You’re protectors, not consumers. You’re glorious warriors, not helpless victims of temptation. “That’s Not for Me.” Lori shares how she also made the decision to divert her eyes, saying: “That’s someone else’s husband. Someone else’s son. That’s not for me.” Simple. Dignified. Beautiful. Women, Back the Men Up! She also issues a challenge to the ladies: "Pray for our men." They’re not weak. They’re not doomed to fail. They’re under attack, and they need our support as they go into the spiritual trenches every day. The Final Word: Men, You Can Do This Lori’s words are necessary. Episode 132 Lillian Decloe   There's a certain level of outrage that arises from the senseless murder of a senior citizen – 89 year old Lillian Decloe had paid her dues in life and deserved a peaceful retirement in her own home.  But in April 1994, someone broke into that home and ended her life in a violent and brutal fashion.  Dignified and gracious Lillian was raped, robbed and strangled by persons unknown.  Pompano Beach police worked her case, but soon it went the way of so many others, and sat in a box on a shelf.  But in that box was Lillian's sexual assault kit – and the key to finding her killer.  This is not a genealogy case, but a familial DNA searching case.
