TW: discussion of sensitive issues including sexual assault, suicide and addictionThis interview contains Lucy's account of sexual assault. That account starts about 30 minutes in and is flagged before we discuss it.I don't have many words to write about this extraordinary guest because I really need you to listen to her story, in her own words. The singer and songwriter Lucy Spraggan shot to fame as an X Factor contestant in 2012. She was just 20 when she was scouted to take part in the ITV series and she became an overnight sensation, with her audition watched by millions. But her time on the show was cut short after she was subjected to a horrific sexual assault. At the time, it was reported she had withdrawn from the talent contest owing to illness. That wasn't the case. For years, Lucy did not feel able to tell the story of what happened to her - until now. This is Lucy's only podcast interview and it marks the publication of her incredible and courageous memoir, Process: Finding My Way Through. It was Lucy, and her publishers, who approached How To Fail and it was only after extensive consultation with all of them that we agreed to sit down in an environment that felt safe and respectful to Lucy's experience. She is, quite simply, one of the bravest people I have ever met. This was an emotional and, at times, confronting interview. But what comes out of it loud and clear is Lucy's strength, her compassion and her resilience. Also, she's so lovely and funny too. This is not an interview about her trauma. She is so much bigger than that. This is an interview about the survivor that she is. We talk about sexuality, sobriety, reality television, the unexpected kindness of Simon Cowell and her journey to embrace the fullness of herself. I loved every second and I love Lucy Spraggan.--If you've been affected by any of the issues raised, Samaritans are here to help 24/7. Olivia Rodrigo parks “Drivers License” (Interscope) at the U.K. chart summit for an eighth week while Architects win a nailbiting chart race as For Those That Wish To Exist (Epitaph) bows at No. 1 on the national albums survey. Architects, the Brighton metalcore outfit, bag their first leader and first Top 10 entry with their ninth studio album. For Those ends the week just 550 combined sales ahead of Maximo Park's Nature Always Wins (Prolifica), which had led all albums at the halfway stage. Until now, Architects' chart best was a No. 15 for 2016's All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us . … Architects lead an all-new Top 5 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart as West London rapper Digga D earns a new career chart peak with Made In The Pyrex (CGM), new at No. 3. It's the most streamed release of the week, the OCC reports. Also, rock legend Alice Cooper sees his latest LP Detroit Stories (Ear Music) start at No. 4, his highest-charting effort since 1991's Hey Stoopid , which also peaked at No. 4, while Lucy Spraggan's sixth album Choices (Cooking Vinyl) starts at No. 5. It's the British indie singer-songwriter's highest-charting record to date. The White Stripes ' just miss out on a fourth Top Ten as the Detroit rock pair's career retrospective Greatest Hits starts at No. 12. Over on the Official U.K. Singles Chart , Rodrigo's keeps motoring with her global hit. It's the most streamed song of the week, with 5.1 million plays, and it's now ruled the weekly chart for two months. Finally, Joel Corry , David Guetta and Raye bag this week's highest new entry with their new club collaboration “BED” (Asylum/Perfect Havoc). It's new at No. 20. From Publisher: Billboard Many things are taking place: Olivia Rodrigo Talks Being In The Studio With Conan Gray – Capital After Olivia Rodrigo shared an Instagram Story of herself in the studio with Conan Gray, the ‘drivers license' singer spoke about what went down. The whole world is eagerly awaiting for new music from Olivia Rodrigo , after her debut single, ‘drivers license', spent three weeks at the top of The Official Big Top 40 . Recently, the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actor shared an Instagram Story showing herself in the studio with Conan Gray, so we had to get to the bottom of it. … conan g.???? olivia rodrigo and conan gray were in the studio together i repeat olivia rodrigo and conan gray were in the studio together pic.twitter.com/RHtTc6IhNw Speaking to Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp , Olivia said “Conan's a friend of mine, and the guy who produces most of my music produces most of his. “We're just pals and I think he's so brilliant,” she said, as she neither confirmed nor denied rumours of an upcoming collaboration. Conan Gray seemingly sent Olivia a message, claiming she'd left pistachios in the studio, to which Olivia jokingly told Capital that “Pistachios are my studio food of choice. “If you ever catch me in the studio, I'm probably eating pistachios, and so I just left some on the piano the other day, and [Conan] was like ‘Did you, like, leave these here?!'” Talking of collaborations, Olivia said she was (obviously) open to working with Taylor Swift, after the pair have been praising and supporting each other and their music.

Lucy has always been open about her struggles with her mental health and, in stark comparison to times past, Lucy has spent the last 17 months sober, and has discovered a brand new side to herself saying she has ‘more mental clarity than ever’. Her mental and physical health and wellbeing has become a huge part of who she is, and her widely followed journey was laid bare for all to see on social media.2020 was difficult, as it has been for everyone, but for an artist like Lucy, being unable to play to the thousands of fans around the UK and abroad has been a huge blow both professionally and personally.Sober Sips talks to Lucy about her journey to sobriety and how she is living her new sober life. Lucy talks about her decision to go alcohol-free and how its completely changed her life - from singing a song on the X Factor called Last Night (Beer Fear) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mgT8PDkTsA) to releasing a brilliant new single which talks about her decision to ditch the booze called Sober (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV5BQcgZWX8) . Lucy is an absolute inspiration - still in her 20s, she talks openly about her decision to go alcohol-free to her huge numbers of social media followers and is showing young people that they have the choice to decide how to live their lives, despite any social pressures that may surround them. She's open, she's honest, she's lovely - and we're delighted she spent some time with us on Over The Influence! If you're on an alcohol free or low alcohol journey - or thinking about starting one - this podcast is for you. He has worked with a wide variety of groups in several genres, and scored a hit with the cult pop band ‘Fat & Frantic’.  Recently, Craig has collaborated with composer Tolga Kashif writing orchestrations for the RPO’s Seo Taiji Symphony, the Classic FM chart-topping CD by saxophonist Tyler Rix, and the Genesis Suite which was premiered at the Barbican.  He is musical director of Young Voices UK, bringing large school choirs together to play with a live band and solo artists, and conducts the Milton Keynes Community Choir, Hart and Soul Community Choir and the Milton Keynes Youth Choir. www.craigmcleish.com (https://www.craigmcleish.com/home) (https://www.educationonfire.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/McLeish56_cropped.jpg) Young Voices Craig was invited by Young Voices to become their Musical Director in the year 2000. Since then he has chosen and arranged all the music for each annual show, which now lasts a month and plays to packed arenas in Manchester London Sheffield and Birmingham. This year over 2500 schools took part and there are more joining for next year. Craig takes months researching and arranging the music each year, producing a learning CD with comprehensive backing tracks and sheet music with notes to help the teachers in the classroom. The whole pack is designed to assist both musical and untrained choir leaders and there are further study notes to enhance the experience for the children involved. Craig also directs the live band for the performances and he has assembled some of the most versatile and capable session musicians in the UK. They are always praised by any visiting artist, and over the years they have accompanied the likes of Beverley Knight, Joss Stone, Lemar, Heather Small, Jocelyn Brown, Matt Cardle, Lucy Spraggan, All Angels, Katherine Jenkins, Lee Ryan, Keith Semple and Connie Talbot. www.youngvoices.co.uk (https://www.youngvoices.co.uk)   Moo Music Craig is the composer behind Moo Music’s very catchy songs with clever tunes and simple yet effective lyrics. Moo Music is a great fun and interactive regular music session for 0 to 5 year old children and their parents, grandparents or carers too, where the children sing, dance and play. Music is an essential part of every child’s development and the 100 original Moo Music songs used at the sessions are positive, uplifting, fun and educational. The interactive sessions help children gain confidence and develop memory, language and coordination skills in an exciting, enjoyable and multi-sensory way. www.moo-music.co.uk (http://www.moo-music.co.uk/)   Choir Community The choir scene in the UK and around the world is experiencing something of a ‘golden age’. More and more people are recognising the joy and fulfilment that can be derived from the simple activity of singing together.  A community choir is a place not only to share a love of music, but also to form friendships, share life’s ups and downs and perhaps escape to a place of perfect positivity every so often! It is estimated that the number of choirs in the UK alone has risen to over 40,000 in recent years, a large proportion of which have been formed purely to share the enjoyment of singing – and perhaps performing – music within a local community, workplace or other environment. Welcome to the final Mixtape Sessions of 2014 and what a treat this set is!  We got a lot to cover here so let's get right to it. Kicking things off is “Give Me Sunshine” by Santa Maradona F.C. featuring Lucy Spraggan.  Think of the first-time you heard that “feel-good” song on the radio and your body's endorphins just suddenly flooded your brain with all sorts of good-will and happy feelings.  Maybe you recently got that feeling when you heard Pharell's “Happy” or perhaps back in the day with Sheryl Crow's “All I Wanna Do.”  “Give Me Sunshine” is simply one of those songs.  A simple narrative that tells a story set to a bouncy beat goes a long way in my book. “Sunshine” bleeds into  EelkeKleijn's “Mistakes I've Made,” which is set to a backdrop of an old western theme with a deep house beat.  The song recounts all the past mistakes made in his life but does reconcile that he “gets stronger” and leaves the question if there is a future.  Keeping up with the indie-house inspiration, I paired this song with “Netzwerk (Falls Like Rain)” by Klangkarussell (another soothing deep house tune with a surprising Afro-choir dropped in during the chorus). From here, we begin a transition from indie-deep-house (Soul For You) to more soulful deep house “Mood For You” by Knox and Moss. The big surprise here is the Justin Faust rework of Janet Jackson's early millennial hit “Someone To Call My Lover.”  While I've been a bit skeptical of the gender-bending vocal remixes that are currently the trend, it works surprisingly well here. Sam Smith doesn't need any more praise, so I'll move on to Zhu who's anonymity and solid productions have quickly raised his or her's recognition since being introduced earlier this year.  “Faded” is deep and moody deep house that is intriguing while at the same time comes across a bit disturbing.  I love this song but can't help but can't help be picturing it in some dark seedy movie about a serial killer LOL.  It gives me chills. BIG HEADS UP to How To Dress Well and the Cyril Hahn remix of his “Precious Love.”  This is a sweet slice of R&B electronica-pop and shows a budding untapped talent that deserves to be plucked for greater things.  At the very least we need to get him some Pro Tools to master his music, but don't let that distract from the true talent invoked in his music. Perhaps the one song that not only struck a chord with me but I've had on repeat for over a month is Birdy's “Skinny Love.”  Sebastian Carter does the remix honor here by turning in an addictive and hypnotic beat that sucks you in with Birdy's alluring vocals.  He also buries the lyrics in the beats with the exception of "And I told you to be patient And I told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced And I told you to be kind" allowing listeners not familiar with the original to turn the song into whatever they want it to mean to them.  Crying and driving around the ATL late at night listening to this song has done just that, so let's move on shall we. I change course with the excellent Diplo remix of Zola Jesus' “Go Blank Sea.”  When you get to the break with this kind of gangsta-electronic swag, you'll have your hands swaying in the air. This all leads to another go-to song of the moment, “Beggin for Thread” by BANKS.  If you bank this against (no pun intended) Keiza's latest “Giant in My Heart” also included in this set, you'll get the sense I'm a sucker love-lost songs.  Okay, I am but these songs are so cleverly written and crafted it's hard not to be sucked in. If anyone that Chainsmokers are just one-offs with hits like “Selfie” and “Kanye” better think again.  These guys are proving their in tune pop sensibilities and are quickly rising to the level of Calvin Harris with Anna of the North's “Sway.”  I fully expect to be hearing a lot more from these guys in 2015. Additional indie (Crystaleyes) and deep house tunes (Slip Away, Falling in Love,

Kicking things off is “Give Me Sunshine” by Santa Maradona F.C. featuring Lucy Spraggan.  Think of the first time you heard that “feel-good” song on the radio and your body's endorphins just suddenly flooded your brain with all sorts of goodwill and happy feelings. Sam Smith doesn't need any more praise, so I'll move on to Zhu whose anonymity and solid productions have quickly raised his or her's recognition since being introduced earlier this year.  “Faded” is a deep and moody deep house that is intriguing while at the same time comes across as a bit disturbing.  I love this song but can't help picturing it in some dark seedy movie about a serial killer LOL. He also buries the lyrics in the beats with the exception of "And I told you to be patientAnd I told you to be fineAnd I told you to be ba...
