WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF BEING THE LAST CAR IN THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT FROM TIME TO TIME.There's always one more thing to do. One more set of copies to make. One more…one more. And then it becomes a pattern. Staying late at school night after night… Bringing home work to complete on the weekends becomes the norm. Before you know it - you're THAT teacher who has no boundaries and feels like their work day as no end and no beginning.Today on the podcast, we're going to talk about something that I was NOT the best at when I was in the classroom. When I first started teaching I didn't have any kids yet, I wasn't married, and I didn't have a lot at home that I had to devote my time to. So - I poured all of my time and energy into teaching and being in the classroom. And, quite honestly, I could do that because of my circumstances, but that didn't really set me up for success later when I did have a family and I did need to prioritize a work/home balance. When we don't develop a healthy balance, we start to establish some bad habits. This week, I'm interviewing Kristen Donegan of Easy Teaching Tools. Kristen Donegan has been an elementary school teacher and Reading Specialist since 2005 in both California and O'ahu, Hawaii. She has enjoyed teaching kindergarten, first grade, a 1/2 combo, and second grade before resigning to continue Easy Teaching Tools Inc. and raise her daughter & son. Kristen has also presented at professional development conferences such as SDE Nationals and Teach Your Heart Out. Founded in 2010, Easy Teaching Tools has helped over a thousand busy teachers implement classroom hacks to save time, implement research-based practices to meet the needs of their students, and focus on work-life balance.Kristen is sharing how teachers can take their time back and be that teacher that leaves at their contracted time, AND doesn't have to feel bad or guilty for doing so!FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES VISIT: classroomnook.com/podcast/139LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODEConnect with Kristen at Easy Teaching Tools: InstagramFacebookBlogPodcastGrab Kristen's FREE Sub Plans Template HERE!
This week's guest, Kevin J. Butler, shares how he lost his passion to teach and how he transformed his teaching style to become more engaging. While teachers don't train to be entertainers, teaching must capture students' attention and at times entertain them. This doesn't mean that every lesson has to be a Broadway musical number, but it does require educators to be intentional when engaging students in active learning. We discuss Kevin's new book, Lights, Cameras, TEACH!, and how he brings the magic of the movies to the classroom, presenting a scene-by-scene script packed with film-inspired ideas for educators. In this episode, we discuss: Community Building Strategies Reigniting your Passions as a Teacher. And his new book, Lights, Cameras, TEACH! About Kevin Butler: Kevin began teaching in 2002 in New York at a suburban public school on Long Island. He relocated to California to consult and teach at a startup charter school. For the last six years, Kevin taught fifth grade at an independent school in Los Angeles and was a member of the school's administrative team, serving as K-6 Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Kevin's classroom instruction focuses on creating authentic learning experiences while engaging his students in content-driven instruction. In the spring of 2020, Kevin was a guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show, where Kelly highlighted his dedication to his students during the Covid-19 crisis. In addition to teaching, Kevin speaks and presents at national educator conferences throughout the United States, including Teach Better, ASCD, and Teach Your Heart Out. Kevin also enjoys visiting schools and facilitating sessions and workshops on student engagement, classroom culture, and the importance of building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. This fall, Kevin is extremely excited to be kicking off his twentieth year teaching sixth grade at a school in the city of West Hollywood. Follow Kevin J. We had the incredible good fortune to have two of our favorite conferences line up over a three day span this past week! We were able to attend The AIE Conference and Teach Your Heart Out at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio. We were able to present two sessions at AIE that we are very proud of: Old School Strategies, New School Tools and Building Digital Character. As teachers, we are always looking to improve our classrooms and our lessons. While our fellow colleagues at school, images on Pinterest, and suggestions from social media are all a great place to start, there is nothing quite like in-person, live conferences to foster genuine connections and to hear about pioneering practices that can be applied in our school districts. But attending a conference, let alone presenting your own ideas at one, may seem so intimidating that too many of us don't give this invaluable professional development experience a chance. In this week's episode, Danielle and Nicole interview Ashlyn Ellsworth of @TheCreativeClassroom, a teacher, social media influencer, and top-tier conference presenter. Ashlyn explains how she naturally fell into the world of teaching-- as well as her impromptu journey into the realm of being a teacherpreneur. From starting a TpT store and helping design t-shirts to fearlessly attending a conference on her own to being recruited to speak at the prominent (and growing) Teach Your Heart Out conference, Ashlyn demonstrates how connection and networking have changed the shape of her career-- and, as a result of her presentations, classrooms around the world. Ashlyn gives us the roadmap for how to get involved at conferences, from mindset shifts to the logistics of funding a trip to a conference, so new and veteran teachers alike can reap all the benefits that in-person conferences have to offer. In this episode, you'll hear: -Who is the right type of person to attend/present at a conference -Exactly what to look for when selecting which conferences to attend -Ways to get involved (even if you don't want to present) at the conference that suits you -How to fund your way to the conference you have your eye on -The importance of networking, both online and in person People and links mentioned: Ashlyn's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thecreativeclassroom/ Ashlyn's linkinprofile: https://linkinprofile.com/thecreativeclassroom The Wright Stuff Chics instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thewrightstuffchics/ Apples and ABCs instagram: https://www.instagram.com/applesandabcs/ https://www.donorschoose.org https://www.teachyourheartoutcon.com
When our friends at The Wright Stuff Chics and Teach Your Heart Out decided to help a school in Bay County Florida after they had lost everything in a hurricane we weren't surprised, but we were blown away by the donation by Hand 2 Mind of $700,000 worth of materials to help those students and teachers get back on their feet! On this episode we catch up with Brandi Brown of Hand 2 Mind to talk about that particular donation, why in a technological world hands on learning still matters, and how to get more resources in the hands of more teachers and students! Hello everyone! Today I am honored to share with you part 2 of my discussion with Eric Crouch (if you missed part 1, click here.) Part 2 is all about doing what's right vs being right. Meaning, we should all be more concerned with doing the best work for our students, so they can do their best work. Throughout the episode, we really hit on how Eric runs his classroom workshop, his view on his role as the teacher, and how it all comes together to create the magic of learning. Eric Crouch is a national award-winning educator from Columbus, Ga. Eric is also Harvard PZ Fellow, a Lowell Milken Center Fellow and currently serves on both the State Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory and the Governor’s Teacher Advisory Council for the state of Georgia. His work with project-based learning is well known throughout the education community, and that’s exactly what he shares with us in this podcast episode. Enjoy! Don’t forget to subscribe and review the show on iTunes! ________________________________________________ Eric’s work with charities, Teach Your Heart Out, and most importantly, with his own students, is phenomenal to say the least. And yet, he is in need of our help! Eric was hosting at PepTalk with Mr D And Gerry Brooks. He brought his camera to help take photos of the event. He laid his camera down on the sound table in a secure area with two security guards watching the table. Later, it was gone, and they saw nothing... Long story short, Eric is trying to raise money to get his camera back. He uses the camera many afternoons to take family photos or do some real estate photos to make ends meet financially, and this is a huge loss for him. If you'd like to help him out, please go here and do so.

On this episode of the podcast we're joined by Chelsey Odgers who is a an artist, clipboard creator, anchor chart expert, and technology teacher! You may know Chelsey better as @hipsterartteacher on Instagram and by the amazing clipboards she decorates! We had a great conversation on how she uses her background in graphic design and art to teach her students in tecnology, STEAM, and Makers Space. When we asked Chelsey what the struggles are for art teachers she discussed how it can be challenging to help students overcome their self doubt. What struck us is the way she described how many students have been told they are not good at art and it makes them more reluctant to try and how it could be the story of any student in any class. She then talked about how she wants students to feel capable and valued as individuals and the ways in which she strives to do that in all her classes. Finish it off with some talk on anchor charts, Teach Your Heart Out, and how she uses Makers Spaces and this is an episode you won't want to miss! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/valueaddsvalue/support
On this episode Kyle is joined by Kaitlyn Edington! We're sorry Wilkie was busy during the recording, but making his wife's anniversary present to precedence over the podcast this time. We wish we could have gotten this episode out to you before we went to Teach Your Heart Out, but we can assure you that Kaitlyn is even more wonderful in person than she is on the podcast. During our conversation we talked about her experience leaving home to teach in another state and how that shaped who she is as an educator. Kaitlyn speaks beautifully during the podcast on how kids lose their desire for the arts as they start to become more self conscious of their work and others opinions of it. And we finish up the conversation with how adults can benefit from pursuing the arts. It was such a fun conversation and we were so lucky to get to meet Kaitlyn in person last week!
