TEXT: Zechariah 9:9-10 Second, Jesus is coming to reign. Kenneth Barker notes that the phrase translated, “your king is coming to you” can also be translated, “your king is coming for you,” that is, “for your benefit.” Verse 9 predicted the first coming of Jesus so that we could be saved from sin and Hell. Verse 10 predicts His second coming to establish a dominion of peace over all the earth. Zechariah writes that the Messiah will cut off instruments of warfare, like chariots, warhorses, and bows from His Kingdom. There will be no need for such weaponry in Jesus’s great kingdom of peace. Zechariah then quotes from Psalm 72:8 to say that the Messiah will reign “from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.” This is poetic language showing that Jesus will have worldwide dominion. Bob Shirock said, “This is a picture of the future Messiah who would come to reconcile the world to God. Matthew actually quotes from Zechariah as he writes about Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This is a future picture of the first coming of the Messiah as the Lamb of God who comes to take away the sins of the world. In His first advent, the Messiah comes on a donkey (a sign of peace) to secure the salvation of mankind. Jesus said, “I came to seek and save that which was lost.” In His second advent, He will come riding upon a white horse (a sign of conquest) to establish His earthly kingdom. So he came the first time to die for our salvation, but the next time He will come to reign. In this passage we are given a glimpse into both His first and second advent. For the last two thousand years, we have the advantage of living in the light of Jesus’ first advent. We have the historical record of His life, death and resurrection. We understand from scripture that Jesus is the only way to God the Father. We live in the reality of His first coming and the truth that we can be saved by the person and work of Christ. We also live in the light of the promise of His second advent. This is hope that we hold onto to know that Jesus will one day return to set up His kingdom upon this earth.” Zechariah predicts that the Messiah will come in to set up a worldwide Kingdom. Those who accepted the salvation brought by Jesus Christ at His first coming will meet their Saviour with joy at His second coming. Those who rejected the salvation will meet their Judge to their doom at His second coming. Christians can have hope knowing that their Saviour is coming to reign.
TEXT: Zechariah 9:9-10 Ed Rea said, “The Old Testament prophets couldn’t see the time period between these two comings, as both Ephesians 3:1–6 and Colossians 1:26–27 tells us that the church age, or the age of the Gentiles, was a mystery hidden from them. Verse 9 was fulfilled with startling precision when Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem. This is just one of more than 300 prophecies concerning the Messiah that was perfectly fulfilled. So we have absolute faith that the promise of His second coming will be perfectly fulfilled as well. There are 4 characteristics listed here that shouted to the reader some of the attributes the Messiah would have: He would be a King, just, bringing salvation, and humble. The animal the King would enter the city on would be unlike normal warrior kings, who purposefully rode the largest, most powerful steeds they could find. And Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the King did enter Jerusalem on a donkey, symbolizing that He came in peace. His rule is one of peace.” Zechariah says that Jesus is also the king of justice. It seems like every week there is a new story coming about a miscarriage of justice in our world, whether it is due to corrupt politicians, an unwarranted police killing, or an unjust court ruling. During the reign of Jesus, there will be none of that. We can have hope in Jesus because His reign will be one of justice. Jesus is also the King of salvation. Zechariah was mostly writing about how the Messiah would bring national salvation to Israel by delivering them from their enemies. But the Messiah also came the first time to bring spiritual salvation to all who would believe in Him. However, He will come the second time to judge the world and those who did not believe in Him will be cast into hell. If you have trusted in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, then you can have hope at the thought of His second coming because He is the King of salvation. The last trait that Zechariah gives regarding King Jesus is His humility. Humility is a trait we all admire, but it definitely could not be applied to our current leaders in . But Jesus willingly took on the role of a servant and a sacrifice so that we could be saved from our sins. We can hope in the second coming of Jesus, trusting in His authority, His justice, His salvation, and His humility.
TEXT: Zechariah 9:9-10 First, Jesus is King. The first thing we need to recognize is the Kingship of Jesus. This gives us hope because of several reasons: His authority, His justice, His salvation, and His humility. Jesus’ absolute authority. Absolute authority is one of the defining qualities of ancient monarchs. While most modern monarchs, like those of the United Kingdom or Spain, have little actual power and mostly function as figure heads of state, most ancient monarchs had absolute authority over their realm. There is even a phrase originating from the medieval world, “the divine right of kings.” This phrase was meant to convey that a king had authority from God to rule, not just from his subjects or his own power. While the application of this concept to earthly kings may be erroneous, the Bible is clear that Jesus is that kind of King. He has the divine right to rule over earth. During His first coming, most of the Jews and most of the world did not recognize Him as king. Most people unfortunately do not recognize Him as King today. However, during His second coming, all will be forced to recognize Him as King. Ed Rea said, “The first and second comings of Jesus Christ are compressed here in these two verses, 9 and 10. Verse 9 clearly refers to Jesus’ first coming and verse 10 to His second coming, which even two thousand years later has yet to take place.
