We confront a Christianity of delay that baptizes postponement as humility: praying when we have language, assembling when we are less angry, opening the Bible when we feel less hypocritical, telling the elders after the sin is managed, coming to the Table when we feel worthy. That is not reverence. It is unbelief with religious vocabulary. The worthy communicant is not the clean man. The worthy communicant is the needy man who looks away from himself to Christ. In Scripture, Christians are shown the proper handling of snakes, false doctrines! Thus, when God Speaks of handling snakes, He is speaking of metaphorical discernment of unScriptural doctrines, and false prophets; NOT physically handling real snakes!
