Fluff your feathers and fight those space demons as we fly into 1986's Howard the Duck. Why were the late 80s so filled with duck content? Does anyone else remember Howard being a detective? Is Cherry Bomb one of the greatest movie bands of all time? And can someone please let Lea Thompson do the remake she has wanted to for so long? Instead of answers, let us share our duck sex trauma with you.

But she doesn't want to get back together, she wants him to find Kyle Strange, an old running partner of Bobby's. Kyle was with the ex's sister when she overdosed at a seedy L.A. motel. The ex claims she's trying to recover a family heirloom that was in her sister's bag, but what she's really after is something far more valuable. Can Bobby find Kyle before the pull of his old life takes him down, and what about his big pitch, a last gasp chance to get back the screenwriting career that drugs took away? When I first started making this podcast I knew even less about sound recording and mixing than I do now, but I have picked up a few small bits of knowledge along the way and did go back and re-mix this very first episode because it was pointed out to me - when first released - that it was actually impossible to listen to in the car. Tommy Swerdlow is perhaps best known for writing the 90s family hit, COOL RUNNINGS, about the Jamaican Olympic bobsledding team, and for his more recent success writing THE GRINCH. But at the height of his success in the 90s, he was also battling an epic heroin addiction. He chronicled these experiences in his amazing and very funny directorial debut A THOUSAND JUNKIES and fictionalized them in his recent, hilarious and moving crime novel, STRAIGHT DOPE.
Buckle up, good people, because actor, screenwriter, and author Tommy Swerdlow stopped by the Bunker to talk about his novel Straight Dope. While you have probably seen the movies he's written—Cool Runnings, The Grinch, and Little Giants—and the movies he's acted in—Real Genius and Hamburger Hill, he and Brad had a LOT to more to discuss: addiction, writing, famous friends, and the joy of storytelling. It's one of those GenX Writers Collide interviews (even though Tommy isn't technically GenX. But, he kinda is.) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Tommy Swerdlow has lived through the highest highs and lowest lows. After finding success as an actor and screenwriter for many of your favorite movies, Tommy tells us how his heroin addiction finally caught up to him. Swerdlow drew inspiration for his new book, Straight Dope, from his own personal life when he was strung out on drugs while simultaneously working on films such as Cool Runnings, Little Giants and more. TJ Bowen is a recovery counselor working in Los Angeles. I first met him when we worked together on the film A THOUSAND JUNKIES which he co-wrote and co-starred in with Tommy Swerdlow and Blake Heron. The film premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and Blake died soon thereafter from a drug overdose. TJ wrote a remembrance about Blake that is so beautiful and somehow captures the fleeting grace of sobriety. I asked him to read it after our interview. Also, has Jim Hart already been paid his $10k fixed fee? If not, when is it to be payable? My patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thedrunkalogues

The always entertaining and often poetic Tommy Swerdlow is an actor and writer known for films like Cool Runnings, Little Giants, and Snow Dogs. Most recently he directed, co-wrote and co-starred in the film A Thousand Junkies. Barry and Tommy have known each other for more than two decades. Their conversation covers a lot of territory, some of it pretty deep, including addiction and the dramatic event that abruptly ended his using, the challenges of being a writer, and how he's come to think of everything as an energetic exchange.
