The operation by the security forces of the Palestinian Authority in Jenin in the northern West Bank continues. Local gunmen, some aligned with Hamas, are resisting and daily clashes are taking place. The PA, which is supported by the West, launched its largest security operation in years to dislodge the armed groups in an attempt to show that it can handle the security situation in the West Bank as it eyes control over a post-war Gaza. Dr Ronnie Shaked is an expert on Palestinian affairs from the Hebrew University's Truman Institute. He said that the government has glorified Dief, and that Hamas has already disintegrated as an effective fighting force. He said that it will not change the reality of the war with Hamas. He told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that Hamas terrorists will fight on as hate-driven, religious extremists and killing their commanders would not deter them, quite the contrary. It has been almost 44 years since Shah Reza Pahlavi and his regime were toppled in Iran and the Islamic Republic was established - Time enough for two generations of disillusioned youth to grow up and protest against a corrupt, incompetent and cruel dictatorship. Except for those governments supporting Russia's war in Ukraine, the world is shocked by the brutal suppression of dissent coming from citizens including both male and female teenagers. The question, however, is whether the current wave of resistance can blossom into a concrete threat to the viability of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's hold on power through his millions of thugs in various organizations. As a member state of the International Atomic Energy Agency, (IAEA) Iran must declare its nuclear facilities and open them to inspection on demand. The IAEA insists on inspecting the other three adamant denial of “any undeclared nuclear materials and activities in Iran” by the country's Atomic Energy Commission head in Vienna last week – while pointedly speaking in the present tense. When a nation fears that its enemy is developing the ultimate weapon and may threaten to use it, a military strike intended to destroy this project is not unthinkable. Indeed, Iran set this precedent roughly 41 years ago, when it unsuccessfully sent its Air Force to bomb the Iraqi nuclear reactor. A few months later, Israel did it, with a totally different result, and in 2007 repeated this operation against the North Korean reactor secretly built in Syria. It is logical to assume that if Iran persists in accumulating the necessary tools and material needed for nuclear warheads, Israel would try to pre-empt it. But with international conditions what they are, is Israeli military action a real prospect, or just an option talked about in order to give more weight to American diplomacy? Immediately after Israel won its 1948 War of Independence, it started worrying about what was immediately called “the second round.” That is, rather than a fight which ends with a knock-out or a tie but a handshake - it goes on and on for countless rounds. Soon enough it turned out that this analogy is too simplistic, because even between the major rounds of 1956, ‘67, ‘73 and ‘82 there were skirmishes, raids and hostilities. The participants obviously changed, but not the concept. Now what is known as “the campaign between the wars” pits Israel against Palestinian militias, Jihadi groups, Hezbollah - and potentially most explosively against Iran. The Islamic Republic of Iran is in an extremely bad shape with setbacks in almost every issue set - health, economy, military ambitions and foreign policy. Iran has yet to fulfil its threat to avenge the death of Quds Force General Qassam Soleimani; as it appears determined to wait out the electoral contest between U.S. President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, while using its Shiite Iraqi proxies to try to drive the U.S. out of its Baghdad Embassy. The old lesson about ‘politics abhorring a vacuum’ (including on a global scale) is apparently being learned once again in the Middle East. The United States is in the process of leaving Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. This policy could be reversed by a future administration, but for the time being, an assertive Russia stepped in to claim a leading role in Syria. Even more ominously, China has been negotiating trade and military agreements with Iran. The more the Islamic Republic sinks into crises in its health, economy and strategic affairs, the more Beijing could become its protector and use Tehran as a launching pad into the entire area. It is almost nine years since the first signs of upheaval in the Arab world emerged, starting with Tunisia, and quickly spreading east, to Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries. This was the so-called Arab spring, which initially started as a democratic outpouring of popular sentiment, but soon deteriorated into chaos that altered the face of this volatile region. Under heightened international pressure, the Islamic Republic of Iran appears to strike back in several ways, not all of them overt. Following the attack on the Saudi oil facilities two months ago, Tehran has taken several steps in the nuclear domain, inching towards a clear violation of its commitments under the 2015 multilateral atomic accord. Is this a sign of more trouble to come, or a mere power-play before a potential diplomatic move? Panel: -Jonathan Hessen, host. -Amir Oren, analyst. - Dr. Yossi Mansharof, Iran and Political Shiite Islam Expert at the JISS Research Institute and the Ezri Center of Haifa University. -Dr. Menahem Merhavy, research fellow, Truman Institute, Hebrew University. The title of Isabella Ginor and Gideon Remez‘s The Soviet-Israeli War, 1967-1973: The USSR's Intervention in the Egyptian-Israeli Conflict (Oxford University Press/Hurst, 2017), tells you that this is a revisionist history, which argues that the Six Day War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973) were not merely brief explosions of Arab-Israeli violence but part of longer sustained conflict between Israel and the Soviet Union. The role of Soviet “advisors” in Egypt in the period is well known. Using memoirs and testimony of Soviet veterans, Ginor and Remez show that the Soviet involvement was much more direct and provocative than previously understood. In addition, the authors significantly change our understanding of the eventual rapprochement between Egypt and the United States. The usual story relies heavily on the memoirs of Henry Kissinger, who naturally takes much of the credit for the supposed “expulsion” of Soviet advisors and the decision by Sadat after the war to move closer to the American camp. The problem is, as Ginor and Remez show, the advisors (and other military personnel) never left. Rather, they were shuffled around for the benefit of news people and foreign agents, then returned to their units. Crucially, these Soviet units advanced the air defense network to cover the Suez Canal– itself the prerequisite for any Egyptian attack. For these reasons and more, this book is well worth your attention. Enjoy the interview. Because this is an ongoing project, the authors are eager to collect more information. If there are veterans, diplomats, or others with some involvement in these conflicts who would be willing to share their stories, please contact Ginor and Remez at the Truman Institute: truman@savion.huji.ac.il.

You wouldn’t know from the 2012 president race but the United States remains engaged in a fairly bloody conflict in Afghanistan. In addition to boots on the ground, we deploy scores of drones in Pakistan, Yemen and the Horn of Africa to keep Al Qaeda and its affiliates at bay. In the post-9/11 world does the US have any other option aside from semi-permanent war against non-state actors that operate in developing and/or failed states? Dr. Rachel Kleinfeld thinks American policymakers have viable options, alternatives and policies that can address the national security challenges of the 21st century. In Let There Be Light: Electrifying the Developing World With Markets and Distributed Energy, co-authored with Drew Sloan, (Truman National Security Institute, 2012), they reveal that “energy,” or the lack thereof, keeps many nations mired in poverty. To jump start-developing economies, Kleinfeld offers some relatively doable innovations to make energy plentiful. In so doing, failed states could very well become success stories or, at the very least, less likely to incubate poverty, lawlessness and threats to international security. In the same vein, Kleinfeld’s second book, Advancing the Rule of Law Abroad (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2012), offers additional policies to promote the rule of law in developing nations. In both cases, these books give viable policy solutions that address the national security challenges of the 21st century. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
