The government has approved plan allocating funds for the rehabilitation and development of Kiryat Shmona, Metula and Shlomi in northern Israel. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held in Kiryat Shmona, following protests of residents over delays in the city's rehabilitation after the war with Hezbollah that broke out in 2023, until the cease-fire reached in 2024. Among the measures approved: assistance grants to local businesses and residents, the establishment of an emergency medical center and a specialist clinic in Kiryat Shmona, the revival of flights between the city and central Israel, and the creation of Kiryat Shmona University, which will incorporate the existing Tel Hai college. Roughly two million people, including 880,000 children and 150,000 elderly citizens, were living below the poverty line in Israel in 2024, according to the annual National Insurance report published on Friday. The family of Yonatan Samerano, 21, who was murdered during the October 7th , 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel has filed a lawsuit in the Jerusalem District Court against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), alleging the agency played a role in his abduction and death. The lawsuit, submitted by attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the president of Shurat HaDin, the Israel Law Center, on behalf of Samerano’s estate and immediate family, seeks NIS 25 million in punitive damages under Israel’s Compensation for Victims of Terrorism Law. It names UNRWA, a UNRWA employee alleged to have taken part in the attack, and several current and former senior UNRWA officials as defendants. Ten foreign ministers have condemned Israel's decision to close down dozens of international NGOs providing aid to Palestinians in Gaza, urging the Israeli government to "lift these obstacles to humanitarian access and fulfill its commitments" in the territory. The foreign ministers, including from Britain, France and Canada, expressed "deep concern" over the "catastrophic" humanitarian situation and called on Israel to "ensure that international NGOs can operate in Gaza on a sustainable basis." Israel took the decision to revoke the licenses of 37 aid groups working in Gaza and the West Bank from today, claiming they failed to meet requirements under new registration rules. Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have termed the large-scale burning of trash by Palestinians in the West Bank as a national security threat and the potential to cause respiratory harm. The Palestinians lack sufficient local landfills and are supposed to transport their trash on trucks to other locations. But truckers often dump the trash earlier to save time and money, and the trash is then burned. Due to a steep rise in flu cases over the past few weeks, the Health Ministry this week recommended that at-risk people, medical staff and visitors to geriatric institutions wear protective face masks. More than 600 children have been hospitalized with the flu this month, 35 in intensive care. More than 900 adults have been hospitalized with the flu in the same time, with 36 in intensive care. The Israel Democracy Institute has released its 2025 Statistical Report on the ultra-Orthodox. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Thursday ordered the country’s military to confront any future Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon, following an overnight raid by Israeli forces in the border village of Blida that left a local municipal worker dead. The incident comes amid growing debate within Lebanon over whether the situation along the Israeli border is heading toward renewed conflict. The pro-Hezbollah newspaper Al-Akhbar reported that U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack has postponed a visit to Lebanon, citing a lack of progress and indicating Washington is unlikely to pressure Israel or intervene at this stage.
