On Monday, more than two years after the conflict in Gaza began – a war which has killed tens of thousands, including an estimated 20,000 children – the remaining living Israeli hostages returned home.Meanwhile, about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners – including 1,700 from Gaza who have been held by Israel without charge – were released and reunited with family. The return of hostages and release of prisoners is all part of the first phase of Donald's Trump's peace plan for Gaza.Trump, who spoke before the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem on Monday, told cheering lawmakers that the “long and painful nightmare is finally over” and that the agreement marked a “historic dawn of a new Middle East”.But is the US president correct? Will both sides honour the agreement and what will the next stage of this peace plan look like? And when so many lives have been lost, where do Palestinians begin when it comes to rebuilding the Gaza Strip?Irish Times contributors Mark Weiss and Michael Jansen discuss how Trump's peace plan will work and what the future holds for Palestinians.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. What happens when a 40-year-old metal legend discovers he's still got more fire in his belly than anyone expected? Welcome to the untold story of Ozzy Osbourne's “No Rest for the Wicked” — the 1988 double-platinum beast that time somehow forgot, despite launching one of metal's most influential guitar partnerships and serving up the perfect middle finger to moral crusaders everywhere. This episode digs deep into the album that saw Ozzy team up with unknown 19-year-old guitarist Zakk Wylde, whose pinch harmonics and dive bombs would reshape the sound of metal for decades to come. From the Jimmy Swaggart revenge anthem “Miracle Man” to the progressive showcase “Fire in the Sky,” hosts Jason Ziad, Tim Minnichi, and Chip Midnight explore why this record deserves a place in the conversation alongside Ozzy's acknowledged classics. The conversation reveals fascinating details about Wylde's discovery story — from a warped New Jersey bar band cassette to becoming metal royalty through photographer Mark Weiss — and examines how this album bridged the gap between Ozzy's glam-metal phase and his 1990s progressive direction. You'll also hear about the controversial “Miracle Man” music video featuring 60 pigs who simultaneously defecated when the music started, creating perhaps the most literal metaphor in metal history. If you love Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, or any band that understands the power of crushing riffs paired with theatrical mayhem, this episode unpacks a criminally underrated chapter in metal history.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Opening & Context – Why “No Rest for the Wicked” was overshadowed despite massive commercial success5:12 – The Zakk Wylde Discovery Story – How a $3 cassette tape and Mark Weiss photography changed metal forever15:30 – Jimmy Swaggart Revenge Plot – Breaking down the “Miracle Man” controversy and Ozzy's perfect timing25:45 – “Miracle Man” – The vocoder effect that terrified metal purists and the pig-filled music video32:18 – Guitar Evolution – How Wylde's style bridged Randy Rhoads' legacy with 90s metal's future41:22 – “Fire in the Sky” – The album's most progressive moment and strongest vocal performance48:30 – “Crazy Babies” – Examining the album's MTV breakthrough single55:17 – “Breaking All the Rules” – Why this track sounds like Ratt but hits harder62:45 – The Lost Songs – Deep cuts like “Demon Alcohol” and “Bloodbath in Paradise”71:33 – Commercial Success vs. Legacy – Why a #13 album vanished from setlists78:20 – Meeting Ozzy Stories – Personal encounters with the Prince of Darkness himselfReady to rediscover metal history? The hostage release and the freeing of Palestinian security prisoners by Israel is Phase 1 of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Phase 2 was kept deliberately vague and has more questions than answers. Is the Gaza ceasefire a victory for Israel? What will happen in Gaza? Who will take control? Is the growing influence of Qatar and Turkey a threat to Israel? These are some of the questions KAN's Mark Weiss put to Prof Danny Orbach, a military historian from the Hebrew University. (Photo: AP)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sweeping UN economic and military sanctions have been reimposed on Iran - 10 years after they were lifted in a landmark international deal over its nuclear program. The new measures took effect as the three European partners to the deal - the UK, France and Germany - activated the so-called "snapback" mechanism, accusing Iran of "continued nuclear escalation" and lack of co-operation. Iran suspended inspections of its nuclear facilities - a legal obligation under the terms of the 2015 deal - after Israel and the US bombed several of its nuclear sites and military bases in June. One of the questions concerning the Gaza ceasefire framework is the possible role for the Palestinian Authority in a post-war Gaza. All countries agree that the Palestinian Authority (PA) must be reformed, but none have defined what reform is. Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) has authored a Roadmap for Palestinian Authority reform – 10 essential and quantifiable steps that define necessary changes and the ways to implement them. According to PMW, without reform in each of the 10 categories, the PA will remain a terror-supporting entity. While Israel Slept, the new book by Yaakov Katz and Amir Bohbot, tells the gripping inside story of how Hamas, Israel’s weakest enemy, succeeded in launching a surprise attack on one of the world’s most powerful militaries. Through a detailed examination of the events leading up to October 7, 2023, the book exposes the intelligence and strategic failures that enabled this devastating invasion. It takes readers back in time, showing how years of complacency, mistaken intelligence analysis, and a misguided policy of containment enabled Hamas to prepare for an assault that Israel did not believe was possible and that would change the Middle East. It's September 1940, and British intelligence is desperately worried: the Nazi invasion of Britain is imminent. A sinister organisation called The Group, a collection of British and Irish Nazi collaborators, is at work trying to support Hitler's plans... But that is not the only concern for the spy chiefs: the search for double agent 'Archie' – the Soviet spy and British traitor – is proving fruitless, and now they know there’s a second traitor, Bertie, also in play. This is the background to the new novel, The Second Traitor , the second novel in Alex Gerlis’s highly acclaimed Double Agent series, a follow-up to Every Spy a Traitor. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich says plans to build more than 3,000 homes close to Ma'ale Adumim will "bury the idea of a Palestinian state". The so-called E1 project between Jerusalem and the large West Bank settlement city has been frozen for decades amid fierce opposition internationally. Building there would effectively cut off the West Bank from East Jerusalem and significantly obstruct the possibility of Palestinian territorial contiguity. Smotrich said it would thwart the idea of a Palestinian state "because there is nothing to recognize and no one to recognize". Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu has continued to defend his government's plan to escalate the war in Gaza, despite widespread international condemnation and outrage. The Israeli leader claims his security cabinet's decision to capture Gaza City, which could mean months, possibly years, of combat ahead, is “the best way to end the war, and the best way to end it speedily”.The plan has resulted in protests across Israel with calls for a total end to the war and the release of hostages. Israeli military leaders have also opposed the plan.Meanwhile, starvation continues to spread across Gaza, with Israel permitting just a fraction of the aid needed to address the catastrophic levels of hunger into the strip. And this week, five journalists, including a prominent Al Jazeera reporter, were killed in a targeted Israeli air strike. Their deaths bring to 192 the total number of journalists who have died since the war in Gaza nearly two years ago, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Why, in the face of all this, is Mr Netanyahu pushing ahead to reoccupy Gaza City, despite overwhelming opposition to his plan?Today, on In The News, Netanyahu says the plan to control Gaza city will end the war. But, is that what he really wants?Irish Times contributor Mark Weiss discusses the fallout from the Israeli Government's decision to take control of Gaza city.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. In this episode, I reconnect with Mark Weiss, who originally joined me for Episode 772 of the podcast after accepting my challenge to read The Four Agreements and go deep with its wisdom. What follows is an unfiltered, soul-level conversation about the journey of deconstructing personality—of learning to recognize and dismantle the masks we've unconsciously worn for years. Mark vulnerably shares how he's been shifting his relationship with judgment, ownership, habit, and personal integrity. He talks about how reading the book helped him respond more calmly in his marriage, honor his word to himself, and begin dismantling the layers of identity shaped by childhood, culture, and survival mechanisms. We explore the difference between habits and choices, the power of conscious awareness, and the invitation to see deconstruction not as something “hard,” but as a sacred adventure in returning to the truth of who we are. This episode is for anyone who's ever said, “I want to change, but it's so hard,” or who's been caught in cycles of guilt and inertia. It's a reminder that every time we wake up to a patterned response, we have the power to chisel away another layer that doesn't belong. What if your transformation doesn't need to be heavy? What if it could be a joyful unraveling? This conversation is proof that it can.
