Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. An Iranian official said this morning that authorities verified at least 5,000 people had been killed in protests in Iran, including about 500 security personnel, since December 28. According to a Sunday Times report citing an account put together by a network of Iranian doctors, the toll is more than 16,500 dead -- most under 30 -- and at least 330,000 people injured. Berman delves into the conflicting reports and updates us on what US President Donald Trump said Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet on Saturday revealed the identities of several Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives killed in strikes across the Gaza Strip earlier in the week, which Israel said were carried out in response to a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire in western Rafah when gunmen opened fire at troops. With both sides claiming ceasefire violations, Berman reviews what a ceasefire entails. We also learn how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to reports that the executive board for Trump’s Board of Peace includes senior officials from Qatar and Turkey. Syria’s army took control of swathes of the country’s north over the weekend, dislodging Kurdish forces from territory over which they had held effective autonomy for more than a decade. President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree declaring Kurdish a “national language” and granting the minority group official recognition. All this comes before the president is meant to speak with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Tuesday, as Germany seeks to step up deportations of Syrians. Is this the start of a great return to Syria? Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Is Iran's uprising a historic turning point, or the start of an even bloodier stalemate? In this episode, you'll learn what actually makes authoritarian regimes crack (hint: it's not street protests alone, it's defections inside the guns-and-batons apparatus), how President Trump's rhetoric (“write down their names,” “help is on its way,” tariffs, canceled talks) is being read as psychological warfare aimed at splintering regime enforcers, and why a U.S.-Israel strike, if it comes, could be calibrated to energize protesters rather than unite the public around the Ayatollahs. The hosts also clash over the nightmare scenario of a last-minute “deal” that leaves the regime alive, then widen the lens to the Abraham Accords, the hypocrisy of Western media and campus activists and the staggering domino effect of an Iran without proxies...ending with a blunt cliffhanger: they're convinced something big is coming, and soon.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, there's new information that contradicts what the Democrats and their media have been saying about Renee Nicole Good, the woman shot by an ICE agent. There's been an effort to portray her as a non-activist, but she was a Minneapolis ‘ICE Watch' ‘warrior' who was trained to resist the feds before the shooting. The Democrat party and their media are responsible for this shooting with their violent rhetoric. Also, Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson are the worst type of grifters. There are enemies to people of deep Christian faith, Jews, patriotic Americans supporting President Trump, and those opposing the rise of Islamism and Marxism in the country. These grifters, motivated by millions in profits from a niche audience, have abandoned their past personas to preach anti-Semitism, bigotry, racism, Christian-bashing, and America-hating, stabbing Trump and his supporters in the back while using Saul Alinsky tactics to target, personalize, and assassinate characters, often Jews. Later, 17 Republicans joined Democrats in a 230-196 passage of a three-year extension of expired Obamacare health care tax credits. This extension, unlikely to pass the Senate unchanged, imposes tens of billions in costs on taxpayers without systemic reforms, perpetuating inefficient, second-class government-run health care akin to Bernie Sanders' proposals. Afterward, Iran enforced a nationwide internet blackout as protests demanding the removal of the Islamic government and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei escalated across cities. How will the Iran protests end? Arash Azizi says 'This won't be a classic revolution'

Once again, Iranians have taken to the streets. Starting in late December, the plummeting value of the national currency, along with the soaring cost of living, were the catalyst for a fresh wave of protest – and one that soon turned political. Although the government has been quick to crack down on the demonstrations, the regime has been dealt some heavy blows in the past year, and analysts are pondering whether this could be the movement that ends the ayatollahs’ reign for good. Haaretz reporter Linda Dayan was joined by Arash Azizi, lecturer at Yale University and author of "What Iranians Want: Women, Life, Freedom" and "The Shadow Commander: Soleimani, the U.S., and Iran's Global Ambitions” to talk about these protests, and what they mean for Iran, for Israel, for the region and for the world. “In some of the previous protests, there was always a mix of hope and anger,” explains Azizi. “This time, there’s a lot more anger, because people know that they want an end to this regime, but they can’t find an easy path… there’s a lot more despondency and desperation.” Azizi explains that one of the key obstacles in realizing this aspiration is Iran’s fractured would-be opposition, including the ousted Shah’s son Reza Pahlavi, who’s found support from some Israeli lawmakers. The protesters “don’t have a disciplined political leadership that you need to bring about that kind of change,” Azizi says. Iran’s developments will likely “have the color of a coup, perhaps even more than a revolution” – and be led by figures currently inside the regime. U.S. President Donald Trump has also warned the Iranian regime against violently repressing the protests. The ouster of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela – a key Iranian ally – by U.S. forces “was a reminder to the Iranians that Trump is not bluffing, and that he could take action against them,” notes Azizi. “The idea that Trump would assassinate Khamenei, let’s say, with the help of Israel would have been unthinkable a few years ago… now, it’s really a possibility.” Read more: At Least 35 Killed, 1,200 Detained in Iran Protests as Threat of U.S. Intervention Looms Analysis by Zvi Bar'el | Why Trump's Venezuela Playbook Won't Work in Iran Israeli Officials Warn Iran May Strike Across the Middle East to Quell Protests Analysis by Ben Samuels | What Trump's Attack on Venezuela Means for Iran and MAGA Isolationists The Israeli Influence Operation Aiming to Install Reza Pahlavi as Shah of IranSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today’s Chuck ToddCast, Chuck breaks down how Donald Trump is being consumed by the growing Epstein feeding frenzy — from his inexplicable softness toward Ghislaine Maxwell to signs he may be genuinely afraid of what she knows. As Trump lashes out at Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene with the same fury he once reserved for impeachment-backers, his grip on the GOP shows early signs of slipping, even as the DOJ considers whether reopening the Epstein investigation could delay the release of sensitive files. With the economy struggling, tariffs quietly being dropped, and ACA subsidies suddenly in play, Trump’s visible panic comes at a politically vulnerable moment. Chuck also recaps conversations from the Texas Tribune Festival, where potential Democratic contenders like Wes Moore and Tim Walz signaled a return to mainstream, service-rooted politics — and where Moore’s centrist lane and military background set him apart as 2028 speculation slowly heats up. Then, historian and author David Lesch joins Chuck to discuss the new book Dodgers to Damascus — an unexpected blend of Middle Eastern politics and baseball. Lesch traces his path from aspiring major-leaguer to one of America’s foremost scholars on Syria, explaining how the fall of the Ottoman Empire, artificial borders drawn by European powers, and a lack of cohesive national identity still shape the region today. He offers candid reflections on his relationship with Bashar al-Assad, why Syria is likely drifting toward a sectarian majoritarian state, and whether any country in the Middle East is truly positioned to attempt democracy. From Iran’s teetering leadership to the Saudis’ complicated partnership with the West, Lesch unpacks the geopolitical moment with clarity and experience. Chuck and David also dive into the surprising ways baseball helped him understand the Middle East — and vice versa. Lesch reflects on the physical toll of pitching, the Braves’ legendary rotation, and why modern sports medicine might have saved his career. The conversation even explores whether the Middle East could ever embrace baseball, the role of Islamophobia in shaping perceptions, and why travel remains one of the strongest antidotes to fear. Ultimately, Dodgers to Damascus is less a sports memoir and more a sweeping look at a region still wrestling with the consequences of history — and this episode brings that complexity to life. Finally, Chuck hops in the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit several pivotal moments in the history of American conspiracy theories that all fell on the same calendar week, plus he recaps the weekend in college football! Jerusalem Post military correspondent Yonah Jeremy Bob, co-author of Target Tehran: How Israel Is Using Sabotage, Cyberwarfare, Assassination—and Secret Diplomacy—to Stop a Nuclear Iran and Create a New Middle East, explains how Israel coordinated hundreds of strikes and infiltrations across Iran, what the U.S. MOP strike on Fordow actually accomplished, and why Netanyahu's longtime caution gave way to a high-stakes gamble.
