On this week's episode of The Jerusalem Post Podcast, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Tamar Uriel-Beeri interviews Dr. Eran Lerman, vice president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, and discusses Israel's recent preemptive strike against Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah's reactions, and what that means for the Lebanese terrorist group going forward.
Bullying isn't always a bad thing, Efraim Inbar says. In a tough neighborhood like the Middle East, sometimes it's necessary.President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security and head of Shalem College's program on Strategy, Diplomacy, and National Security, he speaks as a veteran Israeli political scientist and national security. In his view, Israel must be tough to stay alive—and it hasn't been tough enough.Efraim authored five books on Israeli national security and politics, and edited 14 collections of scholarly articles, and as such, he is considered an expert on Israeli strategic doctrine, public opinion on national security issues, American policy in the Middle East, Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy, and Israel-Turkey relations. Now, he sits down with us to answer 18 questions on Israel, including the Iranian threat, Gaza's future, and why Israel needs to act even stronger. This interview was held on August 6.Here are our 18 questions:As an Israeli, and as a Jew, how are you feeling at this moment in Israeli history? What has been Israel's greatest success and greatest mistake in its war against Hamas? How do you think Hamas views the outcome and aftermath of October 7—was it a success, in their eyes? What do you look for in deciding which Knesset party to vote for?Which is more important for Israel: Judaism or democracy? What role should the Israeli government have in religious matters?Should Israel treat its Jewish and non-Jewish citizens the same? Now that Israel already exists, what is the purpose of Zionism? Is opposing Zionism inherently antisemitic? Is the IDF the world's most moral army?If you were making the case for Israel, where would you begin? Can questioning the actions of Israel's government and army — even in the context of this war — be a valid form of love and patriotism? What do you think is the most legitimate criticism leveled against Israel today?Do you think peace between Israelis and Palestinians will happen within your lifetime? What should happen with Gaza and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict after the war?Do you think Israel is properly handling the Iranian threat?Where do you identify on Israel's political and religious spectrum, and do you have friends on the “other side”?Do you have more hope or fear for Israel and the Jewish People?

The Jerusalem Post Podcast with Tamar Uriel-Beeri and Zvika Klein.Israel should launch a pre-emptive strike against Hezbollah, Efraim Inbar, president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies (JISS) think tank, told Zvika Klein on The Jerusalem Post Podcast, noting that the Lebanese terrorist group is still keeping some of its most devastating weapons, its long-range missiles, in reserve. Both Klein and Inbar noted the importance of Israel needing international support for any attack on Hezbollah, however, the JISS president said that there are certain times when Israel should act independently.

In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Mr. Tuvia Gering joins us to discuss China's strategy in the context of the Israel-Hamas war and the Red Sea crisis. He dissects the different views within China and the role China has played in both. He shares that China blames the United States for the war and that the PRC response to the region is informed by China's desire to push back against the Western-led world order. Mr. Gering also discusses the politics behind the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and the economic ramifications that have followed. Overall, China's responses to both crises have been high on rhetoric and low on action. Finally, Mr. Gering warns of the possibility of broader escalation in the Middle east and the low likelihood of Chinese willingness to work with the United States. Tuvia Gering is a nonresident fellow in the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub, a researcher at the Diane & Guilford Glazer Foundation Israel-China Policy Center at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), and a Tikvah Fund's Krauthammer fellow based in Jerusalem and specializing in Chinese security and foreign policy. There's renewed debate in Israel about ultra-Orthodox Jews being exempted from military service. With the war on Gaza escalating, there are now calls to remove that exemption. But what will take to do it? And how much politics is at play in this debate? In this episode: Efraim Inbar, President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security. Prof. Efraim Inbar, President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, said that the IDF change of tactics will be taking into account the US pressure to lower collateral damage and that would cost more Israel casualties. He added that no one wants to accept any of the millions of civilians from Gaza, because Arab leaders fear they have become radicalized and would create instability in their regimes. But he told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that if Palestinians do move into their territory, Egypt and Jordan would not likely abrogate the peace treaty with Israel. Thirty years ago, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands on the White House lawn and pledged to work together for peace. At that historic meeting, they signed what became known as the first Oslo Accord, ushering in an era of renewed optimism that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could be resolved. Was its failure inevitable? Amid the tragedy of the current Israel-Hamas war, The New York Times magazine recently assembled a panel of experts — three Palestinian, three Israeli and one American – to discuss the Oslo peace process and why it broke down. Two of the participants in that discussion and journalist Emily Bazelon, who moderated it, join us to look back at what happened before and after the handshake and what it can tell us about the possibilities for negotiating peace. Guests: Emily Bazelon, staff writer, The New York Times Magazine; author, "Was Peace Ever Possible?" in the New York Times; co-host, Slate's political gabfest Efraim Inbar, professor of political studies, Bar-Ilan University; president, Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security Omar Dajani, former senior legal advisor, Palestine Liberation Organization's Negotiations Support Unit; professor of law, University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law

The United States has asked for clarification from Israel regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent comments that Israel will hold security responsibility for the Gaza Strip for an indefinite period after the war against the Hamas terror group. While backing Israel's right to self-defense against Hamas terror, the United States has also stressed the need to focus on the day after the war. The Biden administration has indicated the Palestinian Authority could play a role as an eventual governing body in Gaza, while Prime Minister Netanyahu, in remarks over the weekend appeared to reject this option, lambasting what he called an entity that educates children to want to eliminate Israel, supports terrorism and has net yet condemned Hamas' October 7 massacres that sparked the war. KAN's Naomi Segal asked Prof. Eytan Gilboa, an expert on US-Israel relations and a senior fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, if there are signs of strain in the positions between the two countries. After years of acrimony, several recent meetings between Israeli and Turkish leaders seemed to suggest the possibility of a gradual thaw in relations between the two most powerful nations in the Middle East. Such a reconciliation, combined with a growing relationship with the Arab states in the Gulf, might have firmed up an alliance structure in the region powerful enough to deter Iran and its many proxies. The Hamas massacre on October 7 has thrown a wrench into that possibility. Senior Hamas operatives live in Turkey and operate there under its protection. On October 11, Erdogan criticized the “shameful methods” that Israel used to strike Hamas targets. On October 25, he disputed the idea that Hamas is a terrorist organization at all, calling them instead mujahadeen—soldiers engaged in jihad. On October 27, he called Israel a war criminal and a pawn of the West. Ambassadors in both nations have been recalled. Are relations doomed to degrade further? Can they be rescued? Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak is a longtime observer of Turkey based at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security and also at the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University. In June 2022, he wrote an essay in Mosaic looking at Israeli-Turkish relations. Here, he speaks with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver to look at that question in the wake of October 7. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Saudi Arabia last week for three declared reasons: to make sure the anti-Islamic State coalition maintains its important function, confer with the Gulf Cooperation Council and to improve bilateral ties between Washington and Riyadh. Immediately prior to the summit, the top White House diplomat delivered an address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) lobby group in which he indicated the possibility of further steps toward Saudi-Israeli normalization, while cautioning certain conditions must be met before realization of this long-expected development. Blinken's visit was also held against the backdrop of diplomatic and commercial American competition with Russia and especially China. Though the administration of US President Joe Biden has vowed there will not be a vacuum in the Mideast due to a shift of its top priorities elsewhere, Beijing seems to have already taken advantage of the perceived regional readjustment of American attention. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) leaders, if not necessarily its member states, have in recent weeks adopted a conciliatory tone in public approach toward Iran. IAEA Director General Dr. Rafael Grossi has been going out of his way to accept Iran's explanations of suspicious military nuclear activities as “plausible.” There is a questionable gap between Tehran's ongoing uranium enrichment vs. reactivation of international nuclear monitoring equipment – in which the host country is stalling rather than installing. The United Nations nuclear watchdog organization seems to accept all excuses even though intelligence sources say enough fissile material as been stockpiled for the production of two nuclear bombs should the Islamic Republic so choose. Is IAEA policy based on technical or political considerations? Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, has announced her candidacy for president, becoming the first major challenger to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination. The 51-year-old ex-Trump cabinet official is the first in a long line of Republicans who are expected to launch 2024 campaigns in the coming months. Among them are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. Prof. Eytan Gilboa, an expert on the United States at Bar-Ilan University and a senior fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, spoke to KAN reporter Naomi Segal about Haley and her bid. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, visited Israel this week after days of increasing violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Last week, 10 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank city of Jenin, when Israeli forces mounted a raid against a cell which Israel said was planning to carry out an attack. The next day, six Israelis and a Ukrainian were killed when a Palestinian opened fire near a synagogue in East Jerusalem. The deaths triggered rocket fire into Israel from Gaza and air strikes from Israel. Secretary Blinken says the immediate priority is to restore calm, but how realistic is this, and why has the situation become so violent and volatile again? Tensions have been bubbling beneath the surface for years but, after the re-election of Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel now has the most radically nationalist governing coalition in its history. Meanwhile, Palestinians are dealing with the near collapse in control by the Palestinian Authority in parts of the occupied West Bank, with an ageing leader, Mahmoud Abbas, who has been in power for 18 years with no successor on the horizon. So how much is this a factor in the escalating violence? What possible solutions might any party bring to the table? And, as the situation gets bloodier, is there any chance of a peaceful compromise? The appointment of Hezi Halevi as the next chief of general staff, despite being in the midst of an election period, is the right move as it gives a good overlap period with the outgoing IDF chief Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi. “He's the right man at the right time,” Olivier Rafowicz, a reserve IDF colonel and military expert at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan. The IDF arrest of the Islamic Jihad's West Bank leader earlier this week prompted the high security alert in Israel's south amid concerns of retaliatory rocket or anti-tank fire. The Gaza periphery area has effectively been in a lockdown for the past three days -- as major roads in the region that are exposed to the strip were closed, train service halted; public bus routes altered and residents of Gaza border communities instructed to remain near their homes or protected spaces. According to (Ret.) Major General Yaakov Amidror, a former national security advisor and head of research in IDF intelligence, the limitations are well-calculated. Amidror, who is currently a senior fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies, and a Distinguished Fellow at JINSA, the Jewish Institute for National Security of America in Washington, DC, spoke about the developments with KAN reporter Naomi Segal. Russian President Vladimir Putin was left waiting and fidgeting for 50 seconds by Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan ahead of talks in Tehran today, prompting media to draw parallels with Putin making him and other leaders stand by in the past.A video released by the Turkish presidency showed Putin standing in front of his chair and the nations' two flags, his hands clasped, mouth twitching and his stance shifting before Erdogan appears. Dr. Eytan Hai Cohen Yanarocak, an expert on Turkey from the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security and the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University, said it appears Erdogan was acting in a vindictive move of revenge. He told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that Turkey was meeting with Russia and Iran to head off confrontation and was not part of any axis of evil.
