Instances of political violence around the 2024 election and vote certification on January 6, 2025 did not come to fruition the way some experts feared they would throughout last year. But that doesn't mean that we can forget about threats of political violence until it's time for the next election. In fact, political violence continues to rise in the United States and throughout western Europe. Our guests this week, Rachel Kleinfeld of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Nicole Bibbins Sedaca of Freedom House and the George W. Bush Institute, are two of the leading voices on how to prevent political violence and create a healthier democracy. They join us to discuss what causes political violence and what democracies around the world can do to prevent it by addressing both cultural and structural issues in politics. After the interview, Chris Beem and Cyanne Loyle discuss whether non-violent protest movements can successfully combat political violence amid growing polarization and support for political violence from some elected officials and political leaders.Kleinfeld and Bibbins Sedaca are the authors of the article "How to Prevent Political Violence," which appeared in the fall 2024 issue of The Journal of Democracy.Journal of Democracy article: How to Prevent Political ViolenceAdditional InformationDemocracy Works PodcastMore shows from The Democracy Group

In the United States, France, and Germany, political violence has been rising. This is particularly troubling as we lack compelling explanations for why this is happening, and effective responses to stop it. A powerful new argument from Rachel Kleinfeld and Nicole Bibbins Sedaca suggests that the problem is not just emotive political polarization. Extreme political parties, irresponsible leaders and democratic disillusionment also play key roles, and are eating away at the heart of our political systems. Join Nic Cheeseman as he talks to Rachel Kleinfeld about the five strategies that can reduce political violence, the distinctive approach that has to be taken in polarised democracies, and why more aggressive forms of protest against populist and anti-system movements may only make matters worse. Rachel Kleinfeld is a senior fellow in Carnegie's Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program. Her influential work on troubled democracies facing problems such as polarized populations, violence, corruption, and poor governance bridges the United States and international cases. In addition to her research and analysis, Kleinfeld is known for in actively seeking practical solutions to today's problems. To that end, she serves as a trustee of the National Endowment for Democracy, Freedom House, and States United for Democracy and on the advisory board of Protect Democracy. Here's what we explored in the episode: Watching the moon landing as a child from East Germany inspired Klaus' lifelong belief in the strength of human innovation. Shifting from time management to energy management. Finding your purpose is like "focusing a laser" that channels diffuse energy to achieve extraordinary results. From observing professional tennis players, Klaus learned how mental toughness and micro-recharges help maintain peak performance. Controlled breathing is a simple but powerful tool to manage emotions and maintain focus during high-pressure moments. Klaus helped transform and restore purpose to Siemens' struggling angiography division with the most impactful team meeting you can imagine.  Aligning a team's work with a meaningful purpose motivates teams and improves long-term performance. His book was born from a desire to share lessons with young leaders, his daughters, and others seeking balance and performance. Creating memorable moments with his family helped Klaus maintain strong relationships despite a demanding career. You can instill urgency and align teams by clearly communicating that a situation absolutely requires change. Important Quotes from the podcast on Business and Entrepreneurship   There is no skill called “business.” Avoid business magazines and business classes. - Naval Ravikant   You have to work up to the point where you can own equity in a business. You could own equity as a small shareholder where you bought stock. You could also own it as an owner where you started the company. Ownership is really important.     Everybody who really makes money at some point owns a piece of a product, a business, or some IP. That can be through stock options if you work at a tech company. That's a fine way to start.

In a democracy, we resolve political disagreements through elections rather than through physical force. Political violence is a threat to democratic societies – but it can also be connected to a complex range of other political and social problems, including corruption, polarization, social division, and limitations on free speech. These are not easy problems to solve, but the United States can learn from international examples – both about what can go wrong in democracies, and also how structural reforms can help to discourage violence and other forms of extremism. Rachel Kleinfeld is a senior fellow in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program. She is an expert on how democracies can improve, particularly in countries facing polarization, violence, and corruption. She has written three books, contributes regularly to major media outlets, and often briefs the US government and allied democracies on issues at the intersection of democracy, security, and the rule of law. Kleinfeld serves on the boards of the National Endowment for Democracy, Freedom House, and States United Democracy Center, and on the advisory board of Protect Democracy. https://carnegieendowment.org/people/rachel-kleinfeld?lang=en https://www.ted.com/talks/rachel_kleinfeld_a_path_to_security_for_the_world_s_deadliest_countries/transcript?subtitle=en

Their first guest is the electric and lovable Jenna Bycoff, the founder and designer of bridal streetwear brand, Bridemerch. Jenna gets deep about starting a brand in her mid-thirties and the journey to get there. She discusses the inspiration behind the brand, how long it took to come to life, and exactly how she made it a reality. Emphasizing a slow approach and the importance of having a partner that treats your passions just as importantly as their own, the girlies hold hands while they get inspired to stop freaking out over their timelines so much and just GET THERE WHEN THEY GET THERE. They play an invigorating game of Love or War that leads to a tantalizing conversation on where men cut their toenails (and if some of them even do?!) and end with a quick little tutorial on how to NOT be the grumpy photo taking spouse (you know the ones we're talking about). Democracy's decline at the global level can prompt feelings of helplessness and despair. But inaction is not an option for justice-seekers, and fortunately, there are ways to take action. She also names tactics that, while necessary for supporting democracy, are insufficient alone. In dialogue with Just Politics cohost Joan Neal, Kleinfeld reflects on her recommendations, as well as the group that she sees playing a critical role in movements to save democracy in the long term: Catholics. Apropos sportlich. In the wake of the FBI's search of former President Donald Trump's private residence in Florida, right-wing social media erupted with violent threats against law enforcement and political opponents. One enraged Trump supporter launched an armed attack against an FBI office in Ohio. A New York Times article on the rise of political threats and actual violence in the year and a half since the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob quoted Rachel Kleinfeld, a senior fellow in the democracy, conflict, and governance program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Kleinfeld, an expert on political violence in developing countries as well as in the United States, pointed to three critical ways that ordinary people can come to embrace violence:Setting political aggression in the context of war.Describing it as a defensive action against a belligerent enemy.Persistently framing an adversary as irredeemably evil or less than human."The right, at this point," she observed, "is doing all three things at once."In this Vital Center discussion, recorded before the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, Rachel Kleinfeld unpacks her scholarship on rising political violence in the United States and how she became one of the leading experts in this field. She touches on her research and experiences in violent societies like rural India and post-Soviet Russia, her role as co-founder of the Truman National Security Project to develop progressive alternatives to Republican national security policies, and her efforts to bolster democracy at home as well as in post-civil-conflict societies abroad. She also talks about how political polarization and factionalization open the door to authoritarianism and how to reverse the trend toward rising political violence.

The first recorded evidence of weddings comes from ancient Mesopotamia around 2350 B.C. In those days, marriage was a strategic, political alliance that expanded a tribe's circle of trust and resources. Later, marriages became so economically important that they needed to be recognized publicly—often by throwing a huge party. As the middle class grew and ideas around marriage changed, so too did wedding customs.  Famous royals from Queen Victoria to Princess Diana influenced wedding fashions the way social media, influencers and reality television do today. And as happy couples plan their dream celebrations, they're helped not only by vision boards but also by the planners, wedding professionals and small businesses that comprise this $300 billion dollar a year industry. So if you're looking for “I do” inspiration or just curious about the origins and innovations behind these age-old celebrations, get ready to lift the veil on this episode of Trailblazers.  Featuring Stephanie Coontz, Chloe Schachter, David Tutera and Hamish Shephard. For more on the podcast go to delltechnologies.com/trailblazers

You are more likely to die violently if you live in a middle-income democracy with high levels of inequality and political polarization than if you live in a country at war, says democracy advisor Rachel Kleinfeld. This historical shift in the nature of violence presents an opportunity: because while few people can do much to end war, regular voters can be the greatest force for change in rotten democracies. In an eye-opening talk, Kleinfeld unravels the causes of violence around the world and offers a path to security for the world's deadliest countries. Hosted on Acast.
