Undeclared: A Philosophy of Formative Higher Education (MIT Press, 2024) is an imaginative tour of the contemporary university as it could be: a place to discover self-knowledge, meaning, and purpose. What if college were not just a means of acquiring credentials, but a place to pursue our formation as whole persons striving to lead lives of meaning and purpose? In Undeclared, Chris Higgins confronts the contemporary university in a bid to reclaim a formative mission for higher education. In a series of searching essays and pointed interludes, Higgins challenges us to acknowledge how far our practices have drifted from our ideals, asking: What would it look like to build a college from the ground up to support self-discovery and personal integration? What does it mean to be a public university, and are there any left? How can the humanities help the job-ified university begin to take vocation seriously? Cutting through the underbrush of received ideas, Higgins follows the insight where it leads, clearing a path from the corporate multiversity to the renaissance in higher education that was Black Mountain College and back again. Along the way, we tour a campus bent on becoming a shopping mall, accompany John Dewey through a midlife crisis, and witness the first "happening.” Through diverse and grounded philosophical engagements, Undeclared assembles the resources to expand the contemporary educational imagination. Chris Higgins is Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Formative Education in Boston College's Lynch School of Education and Human Development, where he directs the Transformative Educational Studies program. He is the author of The Good Life of Teaching. The book is available Open Access here. Learn more about your ad choices. Kristi Callan in conversation with David Eastaugh Vocalist and rhythm guitarist originally from Texas. Kristi Callan has performed with Wednesday Week, David Gray, Wondermints, Cruzados, Dave Davies, The Ventures, Big Soul, Lucky, The Roswell Sisters and others. Founders of the band were the sisters Kristi and Kelly Callan—daughters of actress K Callan. The sisters formed their first group, The Undeclared, in 1979. The duo evolved into a trio, Goat Deity, in 1980, when they were joined by Steve Wynn. Wynn left to concentrate on his other band, The Dream Syndicate, and Kjehl Johansen (of The Urinals) joined on bass guitar, with the band name changing again to Narrow Adventure. With David Provost replacing Johansen in 1983, the band became Wednesday Week (named after the Undertones song), and they released their debut EP, Betsy's House, later that year.[1][2] Further lineup changes followed, with Provost being replaced by Heidi Rodewald at the end of 1983, and Tom Alford joining on lead guitar in early 1984. In 1985, David Nolte (of The Last) replaced Alford, giving the band its most stable lineup.

Joel Madison is a veteran TV writer and WGA member whose resume is a mile long; having written for Roseanne, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Jackie Thomas Show, Undeclared, as well as having created Malcom & Eddie. In addition to all of this, he also was a working road comedian hailing from the great city of Minneapolis (home of jucy lucys and the almighty Dillinger Four). Upon moving to LA, he was a door guy at the La Jolla Comedy Store and eventually he became a paid regular at The World-Famous Hollywood Improv, passed by the late Budd Friedman himself. Hailing from Queens, NY, Liam McEneaney is a comedian, producer and filmmaker nearly 30 years on the road. Having been on the road for many years, he has achieved notoriety on SiriusXM, WTF with Marc Maron, Showtime, HBO, as well as the hit show Premium Blend on Comedy Central. Great set, Liam! This was the first episode with multiple guests since going multi-cam. Minus a few unrelated technical difficulties, it came out well and honestly, was one of the most fun episodes of The Ian Ira Rousso Show to date! After Liam airs his grevences with me and Gary Cannon, we get into what it was like working for the sixth and final season of Fresh Prince as Will Smith was becoming a megastar, what it was like developing in Minneapolis along side the late Louie Anderson, the important role of SiriuXM in saving the stand-up comedy middleclass, helping me with my apperence on stage, as well as workshoping a one-liner that has since gone on to get a 15-second laugh break in the Belly Room of the World-Famous Comedy Store, and so much more. This is the longest episode of The Ian Ira Rousso Show in a very long time, we covered so much, and I am wildly appreciative for having them on. This was a fun one! An Official Information Act request reported on last week by Newsroom revealed Minister for Resources Shane Jones obscured the nature of an undeclared meeting with multiple mining companies about the Fast-Track Approvals process in February. Initially, Jones told Newsroom the dinner was a “last minute thing”, however he corrected the record the following day saying the dinner was arranged in advance with two other participants. In response, Communities Against the Fast-Track, a coalition of communities, groups and other individual community organisers, have called for Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to remove Jones from his portfolio. Wire host Sofia Roger Williams spoke to spokesperson for Communities Against the Fast-Track, Augusta Macassey-Pickard, about this, starting the interview asking her how concerned she and the Communities Against the Fast-Track groups were about this behaviour.

"Undeclared" was a sitcom created by Judd Apatow that aired on the Fox network in 2001. It was the spiritual successor to "Freaks and Geeks," which had been critically acclaimed but canceled after just one season. The premise centered around a group of college freshmen as they navigate the challenges and adventures of college at the fictional University of Northeastern California. The show received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its humor, relatable characters, and realistic portrayal of college life. However, despite the critical acclaim, the show struggled to find a large audience and was canceled after just one season. Despite its short-lived run, "Undeclared" has had a lasting cultural impact and helped launch the careers of several actors and comedians who went on to become prominent figures in Hollywood. But is the show as good as critics say or did it deserve to get the boot after one season? Listen as the S1E1 boys deep dive the pilot episode, "Prototype" and find out. Starring: Jay Baruchel, Carla Gallo, Charlie Hunnam, Monica Keena, Seth Rogen, Timm Sharp, Jason Segel, & Loudon Wainwright III www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1Pod
The Houthis continue to attack commercial vessels in the Red Sea amid Israel's assault in Gaza. This Yemen-based political and military organization says its disruption of international shipping is a response to Western support for Israel. It likely also hopes its attacks will revitalize flailing domestic support within war-torn Yemen. The United States is no stranger to the Houthis. Since the start of Yemen's civil war in 2014, Washington has backed a Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iran-backed organization. More recently, the United States has launched airstrikes against the Houthis to try to deter future Red Sea attacks — though President Biden acknowledges the bombing to be ineffective. In this episode of None of the Above, the Institute for Global Affairs' Mark Hannah sits down with Alexandra Stark to help us better understand the Houthis, the illogic of America's approach to Yemen, and the lessons for dealing with the Houthis in the future. Alexandra Stark is an associate policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. Her research focuses on Middle East security and cooperation. Prior to that she was a senior researcher at New America. Her book, The Yemen Model: Why US Policy Has Failed in the Middle East is set for release in April by Yale University Press. Returning to our earlier story, Michael Wood has resigned as a minister after it emerged he's got more shareholdings he didn't declare and which relate directly to ministerial posts he's held. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins spoke to Lisa Owen. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6329822424112
A "crushed" and "devastated" Michael Wood has resigned to a "frustrated" and "angry" Prime Minister. Michael Wood's fallen on his sword after he failed to declare his stakes in three more companies that he had a ministerial connection to. Mr Wood had already been stood down as transport minister for failing to properly disclose and sell his shares in Auckland Airport. The Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says the latest revelation made Mr Wood's position as a minister untenable. Here's our political reporter, Katie Scotcher.
Carla Gallo is an actor whose first major film role was in David Russell's feature SPANKING THE MONKEY. This breakout performance gained Carla an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the film won the Audience Award in Sundance. This caught the attention of filmmaker Judd Apatow who cast her as the female lead in the cult favorite UNDECLARED. Carla went on to work consistently with Apatow in such features as, THE 4O YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP, SUPER BAD, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, FUNNY PEOPLE and GET HIM TO THE GREEK. Carla played dynamic roles in the iconic series, CARNIVALE, CALIFORNICATION and MAD MEN. Her other television credits include BURNING LOVE, 2 BROKE GIRLS, WORKAHOLICS, SNEAKY PETE, and recurring roles on BONES and MAYANS M.C. In both Universal's NEIGHBORS and NEIGHBORS 2, Carla gives scene stealing performances as Seth Rogen's and Rose Byrne's loveably unglued friend. Carla has completed work on two Netflix features, A FUTILE & STUPID GESTURE directed by David Wain, LITTLE EVIL directed by Eli Craig. Her other feature credits include, I LOVE YOU MAN, WE BOUGHT A ZOO, MOTHER AND CHILD, HAPPIEST SEASON and FOUR GOOD DAYS. Most recently, Carla will re-team with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a lead in the Apple TV+ comedy series PLATONIC which is now out! We chat about Career dry spells, sucking Steve Carell's toe, course correction, winning mentality, fear, feedback and Bones. Jay Baruchel never intended to be a comedian. But there was a brief moment there in the mid-2000s when he made what he now describes as the “stupid” decision to try and become a movie star. In this episode, the Canadian actor talks about taking on his most dramatic role yet in the new film ‘BlackBerry' about the rise and fall of the Canadian predecessor to the iPhone. Baruchel also traces the story of how Judd Apatow plucked him from obscurity to star in the short-lived Fox sitcom ‘Undeclared,' setting off a string of roles in comedy hits like ‘Knocked Up,' ‘Tropic Thunder' and ‘This Is the End,' a movie he was convinced would be a total disaster—not just because of his very real beef with co-star Jonah Hill, both on screen and off—and ended up wildly exceeding his expectations. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show.
