Episode 21 presents a portrait of Iranian experimental composer Siavash Amini. His music, which moves seamlessly between contemplative ambience, menacing dissonance, and spacious melodicism, has been released on experimental imprints such as Umor Rex and Room40. His latest, A Mimesis of Nothingness, just came out on the Swiss label Hallow Ground. Siavash tells host Mack Hagood that his entire life is based on an experiment and he doesn't yet know what its outcome will be. This episode traces the contours of that story, from his boyhood as a metalhead in a small Iranian port town to his role in the development of Tehran's lauded experimental music scene. Along the way, we drill down on the international and internal politics that add danger and difficulty to the life of this outspoken leftest composer. Amini is forced to navigate not only the authoritarianism of Iranian government censorship, but also the authoritarianism of western tastemakers, who sometimes want him to make the “Middle Eastern music” they hear in their own heads. Steadfast in his individuality, Siavash makes sounds that resist these authorities–the defiant anthems of an imaginary land, population: one. Most of the music in this episode is by Siavash Amini–listen to it again in this Spotify playlist and check out this great introduction to his music on Bandcamp.
Siavash Amini, Sarrsew, mHz and Mariam Rezaei discuss Tehran's experimental scene, and how geography and community can affect the creative process.Based in Tehran, Iranian musician and composer Siavash Amini has worked with the labels Room40, Hallow Ground, Opal Tapes and Umor Rex for the better part of the past 10 years. He's also collaborated with a wide range of international artists including Rafael Anton Irisarri, 9T Antiope and Zenjungle, and remixed tracks for Carl Craig, Bernard Szajner and the duo Arigt. This year he's released two albums, Eidolon and Eremos. Mariam Rezaei is a composer and genre-defying turntablist who's been honing her own unique style since starting DJing at 15. She previously led experimental arts project TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH, and in November 2022 received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists in recognition of her contribution to music composition. She released her album BOWN earlier this year. Sara Bigdeli Shamloo, aka SarrSew, is a Tehran-born and Paris-based vocalist, lyricist and composer. She's one half of duo 9T Antiope, and also one half of the aternative/electronic Farsi duo Taraamoon. On top of her collaborative projects and solo releases, she's also produced creations for theatre and film and is an active performer and actor. Mo H. Zareei, aka mHz, is an electronic musician, sound artist, and researcher whose artistic practice covers a wide range from electronic compositions to kinetic sound-sculptures and audiovisual installations. After studying in Tehran and California, he now lives in Wellington, New Zealand, where he's a senior lecturer in composition and sonic arts. He also released the album Proof of Identity earlier this year
Our Next mixtape lands from the Spanish composer, cellist, singer and producer Yamila, with a unique mix inspired by her last album and a soulful vision inside her art. Dancing between electronic and analogue music, tradition and experimentation. Yamila's artistic practice "looks over the precipice of pure emotion", which couldn't be more accurate. That passion and soulfulness manifest in many (if not all) forms of expression. In her most recent album, Visions (UMOR REX, 2022), Yamila revealed her most intimate catharsis. The album evokes the hallucinatory powers of music. Like an ancient herald, she announces the profound feminine mystique while crossing epic melodies full of pleasure and pain. The album is a journey that prodigiously unites baroque accents, Spanish folklore, such as flamenco, and contemporary electronic music. Pain and glory, lacerating religiosity, feminism cauterized by power, and hallucinations as a source (or pretext/tool) to be heard. All these elements were very present in the Spanish Baroque, one of the most inspired creative epochs in the Mediterranean country, especially in literature, painting and architecture, but in a society lacerated by profound religiousness, poverty and injustice. Yamila's piercing gaze has the fierceness of those who dared to challenge the established powers of the time. Her voice and music –sometimes torn and others buoyant– can resemble the score for a biblical passage (i.e. visions of the Apocalypse), for they are overflowing with physical ecstasy and sounds one can touch. 'Visions' is composed of different forms and rhythms. Blending aural chiaroscuros with contemporary electronics, Yamila exhibits a profuse aesthetic with her music that calls for a look at the far past with romanticism and nostalgia. The mix she has prepared for us she tell, es un viaje compuesto integramente por mí, es una mezcla de temas del disco visions, con paisajes entrelazados, de lugares que visité mientras compuse el album (The mix I have prepared for you is a trip composed entirely by me, it is a mix of tracks from the album visions, with intertwined landscapes of places I visited while composing the album). Got a real mixed-bag/kitchen sink-type show for ya this week, synth workouts, middle eastern tinged psych-kraut, warbled plunderphonics, and a few other things that defy categorization. New batch of Umor Rex cassettes on this week too! Do not ingest after midnight.
Natalie Chami adopted the TALsounds moniker in 2009 for her solo explorations in the drone, ambient, and electro-acoustic improv disciplines. In live performance, Chami’s analog synthesizers weave together into drifting loops that evolve in tandem with her vocal leads and choral harmonies. Her meditative sessions stretch into hypnotizing depths of stream-of-consciousness multi-instrumental input, sinking into expanses of infinite sustain and cresting into bursts of noise from an arsenal of oscillators and effects pedals. As a member of free music trio Good Willsmith, she has toured the country and released eight albums since 2012, including the LPs The Honeymoon Workbook (2014) and Things Our Bodies Used To Have (2016) on Mexico City-based label Umor Rex. Chami performs as half of ambient duo l’eternebre, and co-founded the experimental collective/netlabel Screaming Claws. She was born in Ontario and lives in Chicago.
