Historian Stephen R. Bown joins Jay Martin to explore the rise and fall of empires through the lens of trade, technology, and human behavior. Drawing from his acclaimed book Merchant Kings, Bown connects past global power shifts—from sea otters and nutmeg to oil and cobalt—with today's geopolitical landscape. They dive into cycles of history, proxy warfare, and the opaque ties between states and corporations, revealing how disruptive technologies and seemingly trivial commodities have repeatedly reshaped the world. Simon Bown, a paranormal investigator and podcast host, shares his experiences with the paranormal and his journey into past life regression therapy. He discusses his childhood encounters with the paranormal, including hearing a growling dog in his bedroom and having psychic premonitions. Simon also talks about his passion for the paranormal, his love for music, and how he started his podcast. He explains the process of past life regression therapy, where clients are guided into a hypnotic state to explore their past lives. Simon shares some intriguing stories from his own past life regressions, including being a nurse in World War I. In this conversation, Simon Bown discusses past life regression therapy and its connection to service-oriented past lives. Takeaways Simon Bown has had various paranormal experiences throughout his life, including psychic premonitions and encounters with UFOs. He started his podcast after realizing that recording a podcast is much easier than recording music as a bass player. Past life regression therapy involves guiding clients into a hypnotic state to explore their past lives and release negative energy. Simon has explored his own past lives through regression therapy and has gained insights and understanding from those experiences. Past life regression therapy often reveals service-oriented past lives, where individuals have a history of helping others. The recent increase in mainstream attention to UFOs suggests a potential tipping point in the disclosure of extraterrestrial or interdimensional beings. Interdimensional beings may be in control of disclosure, slowly feeding information to society over a long period of time. The concept of stacked time suggests that all past lives are experienced simultaneously in the soul's perspective. Discussing paranormal topics can be challenging due to societal taboos and the fear of ridicule, but finding a community of like-minded individuals can provide acceptance and support. Sound Bites "I grew up in London and had all sorts of paranormal experiences throughout my life." "I wonder if getting to the point where I am now as a podcaster was the whole aim." "There are techniques to move people through past lives and release negative energy." "You're kind of in, for lack of better words, almost like a service type life. You do these regression therapies and all these other things." "Things are just sort of building up kind of to a tipping point? Or do you feel like it's kind of always been there, but now it's just becoming much more mainstream." "It's not just you're living one life at the moment in reincarnation, you're living lots of them." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/generation-x-paranormal/message

Larry Ostola talks to Stephen R. Bown about his book, Dominion: The Railway and the Rise of Canada. In the late 19th century, demand for fur was in sharp decline. This could have spelled economic disaster for the venerable Hudson's Bay Company. But an idea emerged in political and business circles in Ottawa and Montreal to connect the disparate British colonies into a single entity that would stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific. With over 3,000 kilometres of track, much of it driven through wildly inhospitable terrain, the CPR would be the longest railway in the world and the most difficult to build. Its construction was the defining event of its era and a catalyst for powerful global forces. Bown again widens our view of the past to include the adventures and hardships of explorers and surveyors, the resistance of Indigenous peoples, and the terrific and horrific work of many thousands of labourers. His vivid portrayal of the powerful forces that were moulding the world in the late 19th century provides a revelatory new picture of modern Canada's creation as an independent state. Stephen R. Bown writes on the history of exploration, science and ideas. His subjects include the medical mystery of scurvy, the Treaty of Tordesillas and the lives of Captain George Vancouver and Roald Amundsen. His books have been published in multiple English-speaking territories, translated into nine languages and shortlisted for many awards. He has won the BC Book Prize, the Alberta Book Award, the William Mills Prize for Polar Books, among others. His 2020 book, The Company: The Rise and Fall of the Hudson's Bay Empire, won the J.W. In the second and final installment of our interview, Chuck Bown remembers winning the 1990 Busch Series championship, as well as the lengths to which NASCAR went to make sure the title was on the up and up. Chuck then moved to Winston Cup with Bobby Allison in 1994 but experienced a terrible accident at Pocono that left him with impaired vision for the next several months. He pulled himself from the car while recovering, and subsequently fought the perception that he was damaged goods. We'll then take a look at the August 16, 1990 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Ricky Rudd wins at Watkins Glen, just ahead of a battle for second place between the brothers Bodine … Geoff and Brett. Sterling Marlin and team owner Billy Hagan are mad at Tommy Kendall after the race. Mark Martin finishes fifth on a weekend that began with a VICIOUS accident during practice that also involved Dick Trickle and Troy Beebe. Crew members are injured for the second race in a row. There's an ad for an international driver search that eventually became the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Kim Wood Hall and her husband Terry celebrate Christmas all year long. Also … Chuck Bown wins his sixth and final Busch Series race of 1990. Junior Johnson employees/lawyers file a protest in a garage-area cooking competition and … finally … a commentary foreshadows Rajah Carruth's truck win this weekend at Las Vegas. This week in the first of what will be two installments of our interview, Chuck Bown remembers going Cup racing as a YOUNGster, winning championships in Winston West and Busch North, and the momentous move to the Busch Series with team owners Hubert and Jeff Hensley. We then dig into the January 19, 1978 issue of Grand National Scene. Chuck Bown parts ways with his Winston West team owner just two years after winning the division championship together. Darrell Waltrip gets a couple of prestigious awards and the writer of a letter to the editor mentions Scene's extraordinarily humble beginnings. Daytona announces its purse for the upcoming 1978 Daytona 500 … and it's less than a half-million dollars. Writer Gene Granger turns in copy on the winner's circle program, David Pearson … David Pearson AGAIN … and Bobby Allison. Plus, we get a look at NASCAR independent driver J.D. McDuffie. Awakened...Now What?! EPISODE 309 PAST LIVES WITH SIMON BOWN Simon Bown is the host of The Past Lives Podcast. He has a diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy and is certified in Past Life Regression Therapy. He specialises in taking people through past life regressions and has conducted a large number of sessions. He has had many paranormal experiences including psychic flashes, UFO sightings and a number of strange events not easily explained. These have proved to me that there is something more to us than flesh and blood and that we are energetic beings working through a cycle of reincarnation with the aim of experiencing everything there is to be experienced as a human being. He has had three remarkable incidences of feathers showing up in an unexpected and profound way while discussing angels with mediums. He took part in his first past life regression in 1987 at the College of Psychic Studies in London. The thoughts and feelings he experienced have stayed with him to this day. Since then he has viewed several other past lives through hypnotic regression. They have never failed to provoke intense feelings and give him great insight into his life today. He has produced over 250 podcast episodes. Each one is an hour long interview with a researcher or someone who has had an amazing experience. Almost all of the guests have written a book and in preparation for each episode Simon reads the guest's book to give him the knowledge to ask in depth questions. Combining the information and insight gained from the interviews and the books has given him a detailed overview of the concepts of Reincarnation, Near Death Experiences and the continuation of consciousness. The Past Lives Podcast has achieved over 2,000,000 downloads, is in the top 0.5% of podcasts worldwide and recently went to No.1 in the UK Apple podcasts spirituality chart and was No.5 in the USA. The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
It's Friday and we're feeling the flow as we talk about the sales rebound that is rolling strong. We also discuss the IRA loophole that is changing the EV sales landscape, as well as a global first in autonomy going down in Las Vegas. The June numbers are in and the industry rebound is rolling on as auto sales reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 15.8 million, close to the upper end of forecasts and up from 15.1 million in May.Despite remaining below the 15 million mark in 2022 due to low inventory, sales have maintained or exceeded this level in 2023. However, they still fall short of the 2015-2019 boom years when sales exceeded 17 million annually. GlobalData, noting the resilience of American consumers amid near-record high prices and increasing interest rates, increased its 2023 sales forecast to 15.4 million, up by 500,000.Just about everyone is winning: Ford: +9.9%, General Motors: +18%, Toyota: +15%, Stellantis: +6%, Honda: +54%, Hyundai: +10%, Kia: +8%, Nissan: +33%, Subaru: +28%, Mazda: +97%, Audi: +16%, Volvo: +53%, Genesis: +33%, Ram: +3%, Jeep: -3%, Chrysler: +33%, Dodge: +37%, Fiat: -42%, Alfa Romeo: -25%Some analysts predict a cooling in sales pace in the second half of the year due to rising interest rates and affordability concerns. An unexpected loophole in the Inflation Reduction Act could make it easier and cheaper for car buyers to switch to an EV. The legislation originally established strict assembly and material sourcing criteria for vehicles to qualify for federal tax credits, but the new rules may not apply to leased vehicles. Chad Bown, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics said, “So if the car companies set up a commercial leasing division and they buy their own vehicles in it, then they get the tax credit and they can pass it onto the consumer and they don't have to be trucks or vans," Bown said. "No other criteria apply. You can be super rich and qualify for this or the vehicle can be priced any price. There is also no restriction that it has be made in North America or that the batteries have to be sourced from outside of China."Edmunds reports about 37% of EVs bought in April were leased, up from 17% in April 2022. In May, about 44% were leased, up from 15% in the year-ago period. For June, 44% were leased compared with 13% in the year-ago period.Halo.Car, a provider of on-demand electric vehicles, has started offering driverless delivery of its remote-controlled EVsThis is a first of it's kind service, globally.. The program is launching in Las Vegas after four years of safety-driver assisted testing. The service allows customers to book a Halo.Car EV which is then remotely delivered to the customer's location. For now, the driverless vehicles will initially be followed by a second vehicle to monitor the health and safety of the driverless vehicle.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
