Episode 21 presents a portrait of Iranian experimental composer Siavash Amini. His music, which moves seamlessly between contemplative ambience, menacing dissonance, and spacious melodicism, has been released on experimental imprints such as Umor Rex and Room40. His latest, A Mimesis of Nothingness, just came out on the Swiss label Hallow Ground. Siavash tells host Mack Hagood that his entire life is based on an experiment and he doesn't yet know what its outcome will be. This episode traces the contours of that story, from his boyhood as a metalhead in a small Iranian port town to his role in the development of Tehran's lauded experimental music scene. Along the way, we drill down on the international and internal politics that add danger and difficulty to the life of this outspoken leftest composer. Amini is forced to navigate not only the authoritarianism of Iranian government censorship, but also the authoritarianism of western tastemakers, who sometimes want him to make the “Middle Eastern music” they hear in their own heads. Steadfast in his individuality, Siavash makes sounds that resist these authorities–the defiant anthems of an imaginary land, population: one.

As a tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto on the first anniversary of his passing, Caro C talks to Richard Barbieri, Natalie Beridze and Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, three musicians who were fortunate enough to collaborate with him. Here, they share some insights into his mindset and methodologies. Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:44 - Richard Barbieri09:04 - Natalie Beridze 19:45 - Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto Ryuichi Sakamoto BiogRyuichi Sakamoto was a multi award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, composer and producer who along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, became pioneers of the electronic music genre in Honsono's band Yellow Magic Orchestra.Prior to his success with the band, Sakamoto earned a B.A. in music composition and worked as a session musician and producer. Alongside his success with the band, he continued his solo work, releasing solo albums and collaborations, experimenting with various genres and fusing traditional with electronic. This work led to him scoring more than 30 films throughout his career, his most famous being Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and The Last Emperor. In his later career he composed a multimedia opera, sampled a glass building for use in one of his works and traveled to the Arctic to record the sound of melting snow.Richard Barbieri BiogHailing from London, Richard joined the British band Japan in 1975 and saw huge success around the world until they split in 1982. He continued to work with David Sylvian, as well as Sylvian's brother, Steve Jansen on separate projects. He reunited with Sylvian, Jansen and bass player Mick Karn for the Rain Tree Crow project and continued to play with Steve & Mick as part of ‘JBK'. In the early 1990s, the three of them teamed up with Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson as part of No-Man and it was here that Barbieri and Wilson would begin their long musical association. Porcupine Tree had initially been a Wilson solo project but he recruited Richard in 1993 and over the next 17 years, became one of the shining lights of the neo-prog / pop scene, embracing a more heavy style as the years went on. Reuniting in 2021, they released the first Porcupine Tree album in 12 years with 2022's ‘Closure/ Continuation', a critically acclaimed return to form. Richard has a large body of solo work which he started to release in 2005 and still does to this day.http://www.richardbarbieri.co.uk/Natalie Beridze BiogNatalie Beridze is a Georgian music composer and songwriter. Since 2003 Natalie has been performing live concerts worldwide, and has been known as the first female electronic music artist from Georgia. From 2002-2008 she lived in Cologne and produced music under the artist name TBA. She's released music in Europe on Max.E, Monika Enterprise, CMYK, Laboratory Instinct, CES Records DADO records, Apollo Records Chainmusic, CES Records and ROOM40.In addition to her solo projects, Beridze has collaborated with artists such as Thomas Brinkmann, AGF (Antye Greie), Gudrun Gut, Joerg Follert, Marcus Schmickler, Nika Machaidze aka Nikakoi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gacha Bakradze, Alex Kordzaia, Annika Henderson, Antye Greie-Fuchs, Barbara Morgenstern, Beate Bartel, Danielle De Picciotto, Gudrun Bredemann, Lucrecia Dalt, Merja Kokkonen, Mommo G, Natalie Beridze, Pilocka Krach, Sonae. His various musical projects include collaborations with Ryōji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, Iggy Pop, Blixa Bargeld and Ryūichi Sakamoto. We also do a deep dive into our different headspaces in various drumming contexts, including 1-1 lessons, drum camps, and live shows. We talk about the importance of structure and order in drum camps, allowing the camp to unfold naturally and creating an environment where campers can become their best version. We discuss the challenges of reading the room and balancing different personalities in a camp setting. The conversation then shifts to the headspace for shows, the difference between playing in front of other drummers, and the unique challenges of teaching in a one-to-one lesson. TakeawaysPractice is essential for drummers to improve their skills and overcome challenges. The Practice Project is a new initiative for patrons to hold each other accountable and make progress in their drumming. The headspace of a practicing drummer can be influenced by distractions and the need to prioritize different aspects of drumming.One-to-one drum lessons require teachers to balance honesty and encouragement while providing solutions to students' challenges.Teaching multiple students can be challenging, but experience and preparation can help teachers provide effective instruction.Drum camps offer a unique teaching experience that requires instructors to create a positive and engaging environment for a group of drummers. Creating structure and order in drum camps can provide a sense of stability and allow for flexibility when needed.Allowing the camp to unfold naturally and embracing the unknown can lead to a more authentic and meaningful experience for campers.Reading the room and adapting to different personalities is crucial in creating a positive and supportive environment in drum camps. The headspace for shows is often more relaxed and confident compared to the headspace for one-to-one lessons or camps.Understanding and navigating drummers' different goals and aspirations in a camp setting can be challenging but rewarding.Chapters00:00 Introduction and the Importance of Practice03:30 The Practice Project for Patrons10:25 The Head Space of a Practicing Drummer16:56 The Head Space of a One-to-One Drum Lesson26:06 The Head Space of Teaching Multiple Students31:56 The Head Space of a Drum Camp35:23 Headspace for Drum Camps36:12 Allowing the Camp to Unfold37:14 Creating the Best Version of Themselves37:37 Structure and Order39:15 Reading the Room40:20 Balancing Different Personalities41:00 Transitioning from Camps to Shows42:23 Headspace for Shows43:20 Playing in Front of Other Drummers45:14 Different Headspace for Shows, Lessons, and Camps46:08 Dealing with Potential Issues in Shows48:00 Navigating Different Drummer Goals in Camps49:48 Seriousness in Advanced Drummers51:03 Headspace for YouTube Videos52:16 Appreciation for Listener Support53:01 Closing RemarksSupport the show

Andrea Belfi discusses his latest album, Eternally Frozen, a canon-based composition for percussion, electronics, and brass ensemble. Inspired by a visit to LA's Museum of Jurassic Technology, Belfi draws upon the story of Deprong Mori, a mythological bat that could use its powers of echolocation to phase through solid matter, before being captured by an American researcher, “eternally frozen” in lead. Movement, circularity, and stasis are all terms that also describe Belfi's interests as a composer. We discuss his origins in Italy's punk scene, his time as drummer of the noisy instrumental rock band Rosolina Mar, opening for Thom Yorke, and the development of his unique approach to solo performance as a drummer.

The Holmes Archive of Electronic Music

Episode 91 The Silent Episode Playlist Morton Feldman, “Intersection” (1953) from First Recordings: 1950s (1999 Mode). Feldman, like Cage, had already been a proponent of including silence in his pieces. Feldman was a part of the Project of Music for Magnetic Tape (1951 to 1954), an artist's collective founded by Cage to explore experiments in magnetic tape music. From this period came several works, the most famous of which was Williams Mix (1952) by Cage. For Williams Mix, Cage commissioned the recording of hundreds of taped sounds by Louis and Bebe Barron and then specified how to splice them together using a daunting 192-page graphical composition created using chance operations. Cage conceived the work for eight tracks of magnetic tape played simultaneously. The other members of the collective, in addition to helping edit Williams Mix, also created some unique works of their own using the same library of sounds. Feldman was one of these composers but took a decidedly different approach than Cage. For Intersection, Feldman used a graphic score composed of a grid, a method he had been testing for various instrumental works such as Intersections No. 1 for Piano (1951). The score could be likened to a sheet of graph paper with one row assigned to each of the eight channels. Each square, or cell, of each row represented a unit of time to be occupied by either a sound or silence. The sounds were assigned only as numbers representing the lengths of tape snippets to be used, thus regulating the duration of individual sounds. The sequence and simultaneity of the audio was dictated by the “intersection” of sounds and silences across the columns of the score. The realization of the piece was left in the hands of Cage and Earle Brown, who assembled the tape segments by following the grid score. The choice of sounds drawn from the tape library was left to the executors of the score. Whereas Cage had not actually specified the use of silence in the score of Williams Mix, Feldman clearly had, and this is evident from the result. Speaking about the piece later, Feldman famously said that he “loathed the sound of electronic music.” He disliked the labor of executing a piece by cutting up magnetic tape and didn't feel the result was justifiably unique. He also said, “John [Cage] says that experimental music is where the outcome cannot be foreseen. . . . After my first adventure in electronic music, its outcome was foreseen.” 3:24 John Cage Variations I from Darmstadt Aural Documents Box 2 – Communication (2012 NEOS). Two Pianos, Electronics, Radio Sets, David Tudor, John Cage. This German disc is part of the Darmstadt Aural Documents projects and features recordings from 1958. This track was of the European premiere of Variations 1 and was recorded at the International Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt September 3, 1958. This track is enlightening because it not only contains a work by Cage with purposefully scored silences, albeit by chance operations, but is also a live recording with an audience. You can clearly hear how the audience responds during the silent passages, mostly in their bemusement. Whereas the implied humor was unintentional, I often experienced this phenomenon while seeing a Cage performance. I wanted to include this as an example of what can happen when silence becomes part of a live performance. Chance operations were used to determine the placement and duration of silences. 8:50 John Cage, “WBAI” (1960) from Early Electronic And Tape Music (2014 Sub Rosa). Sine wave oscillator, record player, synthesizer, radio. Description of the piece from the score in the Edition Peters catalogue (1962) of Cage's works: “Certain operations may be found impossible e.g., 3 or 4 at once. Let the operator do what he can without calling in assistants.” Chance operations were used to determine the placement and duration of silences. This performance for sine wave oscillator, record player, synthesizer, radio. Not performed by Cage and recorded in 2013 by participants following the score. Originally presented on WBAI (NY) as a solo work scored for performance with Cage's lecture ("Where Are We Going? And What Are We Doing?"). From the comments of the score: “This composition may be used in whole or in part by an operator of machines.” Personnel on this disc include, Square-wave oscillator, Auxiliary Sounds, Radio, Robert Worby; Performer, Langham Research Centre Auxiliary Sounds, Cassette, Open-reel tape, Radio, Iain Chambers; Synthesizer, Auxiliary Sounds, Spoken Word, Philip Tagney; Turntables, Auxiliary Sounds, Open-reel tape, Felix Carey. 7:04 John Cage, David Tudor, “Klangexperimente (Sound Experiment)” 1963 from Siemens-Studio Für Elektronische Musik (1998 Siemens Kultur Programm). Interesting collection of tracks by a variety of artists invited to explore the technological possibilities of the early "Studio for Electronic Music" built and run by Siemens since 1956 in Munich and Ulm. In the case of the Cage piece, both Cage and Tudor programmed this work using punch cards, an early computer control device. Chance operations were used to determine the placement and duration of silences. 1:58 Henri Pousseur, “Scambi (Exchanges)” (1957) from Panorama Des Musiques Expérimentales (1964 Philips) is an electronic music tape composition by the Belgian composer , realized in 1957 at the Studio di Fonologia musicale di Radio Milano. Pousseur fluidly added silence patches throughout this piece, using them to create tension due to their unpredictable nature. This is an analog recording, so the silences include an abundance of tape hiss. 6:27 Ton Bruynèl, “Reflexen (Reflexes)” (1961) from Anthology of Dutch Electronic Tape Music: Volume 1 (1955-1966) (1978 Composer's Voice). Recorded in Bruynèl private electronic music studio. Another tape work that shows the potential for splicing in silence as a tool of the composer. The silences are carefully added from about the 2:14 to 4:00 mark to underscore the accelerating pace of the music. Note that the original recording has rumble from what sounds like a turntable, plus tape hiss, so the “silences” are not as abject as they are in digital recordings. 4:41 MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva), “Spacecraft” from Live Electronic Music Improvised (1970 Mainstream). Performers, Alan Bryant, Alvin Curran, Frederic Rzewski, Ivan Vandor, Richard Teitelbaum (Moog Modular synthesizer). The liner notes described the following editing process for this album that includes the random insertion of silent passages within the recorded live tracks: “The tape has been edited and interspersed with silence in accordance with a random number programme to give a representative cross-section of a concert lasting two hours.” 19:50 Maggi Payne, “Scirocco” from Crystal (1986 Lovely Music Ltd.). Composed, engineered, performed by Maggi Payne. This beautiful piece of ghostly, haunting sounds is long enough to create an expectation of a continuous soundscape, only to two drop off in two spots to present long silent or nearly silent passages. 10:26 Mika Vainio, “In a Frosted Lake” from Aíneen Musta Puhelin = Black Telephone Of Matter (2009 Touch). Produced and recorded in Berlin 2008. This piece seems to be about amplitude and inaudible frequencies, frameworked by silences. There is a pattern of eight peak tones from the start to the end of the piece. In between these peaks are quieter sounds and silences, with a tension that leans toward achieving a silent state. 5:53 Giancarlo Mangini, “September 14, 2020, from 4.50a.m. to 5.02a.m. ...and remember what peace there may be in silence” from Electronic Music Philosophy, Vol. 27: Silence (2020 Bandcamp). From the twenty-seventh collection of tracks from the collective known as Electronic Music Philosophy (Tustin, California) came this disc devoted to works composed using silence as a principal technique. In this work, there is a steady pattern of silences from start to finish, but the duration of the silences gradually increases in many instances as the work progresses. 11:38 Richard Chartier, “Herein, Then” from Other Materials(2002 3Particles). This disc includes is a compilation of tracks and unreleased works from 1999-2001. Limited to 500 copies. Composed, produced, programmed, and performed by Richard Chartier. As with many of his tracks, Chartier explores the outer reaches of human hearing. Many of the sounds in this track cannot be heard when played on loudspeakers with even moderate background noise. There are actually only two spots of abject, digital silence in this track, although due to the low frequency and amplitude of many of the other electronic tones, you might think there in nothing there. This is a clever, psychological trick. 5:02 Marina Rosenfeld, “Formal Arrangement” from Plastic Materials (2009 Room40). Composed and performed by Marina Rosenfeld. Among the various commissions found on this disc is this solo electronic work. A pattern of silences in which 25 evenly-spaced sound events, mostly gong- or bell-like tones, are each followed by a fade and then a discrete, abject silence. 2:35 Tetsu Inoue, “Super Digital” from Fragment Dots (2000 Tzadik). Composed, Programmed by Tetsu Inoue. I knew Tetsu and he would probably be embarrassed to know that I counted every conceivable “digital” silence in this special piece of music. There are 293 of them that I think one can perceive. Many are short, but because silence is an important structural component of this work, I thought it warranted a fresh listen. The longest of these silences is but 2.5 seconds. The shortness of all the tones, either audible or silent, works together to form a unity. 3:39 Miki Yui, “Balloon” from Small Sounds (1999 BMP Lab). Composed, engineered, and performed by Miki Yui. Recorded in Cologne, Germany. The composer wrote, “small sounds are to merge and fuse with your acoustic environment—please play in a transparent level; in different atmosphere.” In this piece, the silences are placed in the middle of sounds to break up an otherwise continuous noise. 2:57 Opening background music: Mooshzoom, “Silence” from Electronic Music Philosophy, Vol. 27: Silence (2020 Bandcamp). From the twenty-seventh collection of tracks from the collective known as Electronic Music Philosophy (Tustin, California) came this disc devoted to works composed using silence as a principal technique. Plus clips from the following as examples: Amelie Lens, “Resonance” from Contradiction (2017 Second State); Nora En Pure, “Norma Jean” from Come With Me (2013 Enormous Tunes). Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Most (if not all) previous Ambientblog mixes always had some dark moments in them, they are never 'just' relaxing. You can only feel release if you also felt tension. This time, I wanted to avoid the darkness and create a 'lighter mood mix'. Not of the 'Ibiza Chillout Lounge' kind, but one that can be played in the background and is still exciting enough to listen to. I hope I succeeded, but of course, you're the one to decide about that! With two hours, Cloudwatching is longer than usual. Only a few tracks are included in their full length, but most are heavily edited or even just short fragments. Also, they are often overlayed, so you'll hear the music in a different context.

Sound Ecology is a continuation of our Season 2 theme, Art Meets Science. In this episode we experience the work of sound artists and musicians. We're moving at a meditative pace and providing listeners with a contemplative, relaxing experience. First up will be a six minute sound experience entitled "Shivering Sands," the contemplative ambient music project of singer-songwriter Angela James and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Martins. After "Shivering Sands" is an interview with sound artist, Norman W. Long, followed by his sound piece entitled "Expanded Field." Norman's practice involves walking, listening, improvising, performing, recording and composing to create environments and situations in which he and the audience are engaged in dialogues about memory, place, ecology, culture, race, value, silence and the invisible. Norman Long has performed and exhibited at Experimental Sound Studio, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Links Hall, Elastic Arts,Green Line Performing Arts Center, Chicago Humanities Festival, Chicago Cultural Center and 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Norman has performed with Damon Locks, Tatsuya Nakatani, Cher Jey, Sara Zalek, Cristal Sabbagh, Xris Espinoza, Adam Zanolini, Dan Bitney and Todd Carter and performed and toured with Angel Bat Dawid and the Brothahood. He has released his compositions on Hausu Mountain, Reserve Matinee and Room40 labels. His latest release, BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN, was released in September 2021 on Hausu Mountain. The Pivot Arts Podcast is created and produced by Julieanne Ehre with sound engineering by Hannah Foerschler and original music composed by Andrew Hansen.

Max Alper is best known for La Meme Young, his popular Instagram account turning niche experimental music jokes into dank memes. But a deep interest in music pedagogy is at the heart of everything Alper does, including his non-profit Sonic Arts For All!, an organization that puts music technology directly into the hands of K-12 and special needs students. We talk about the importance of creativity, memes as pedagogy, the limits of traditional music education, and how to democratize music technology. Amini is forced to navigate not only the authoritarianism of Iranian government censorship, but also the authoritarianism of western tastemakers, who sometimes want him to make the "Middle Eastern music" they hear in their own heads. Steadfast in his individuality, Siavash makes sounds that resist these authorities--the defiant anthems of an imaginary land, population: one. Most of the music in this episode is by Siavash Amini--listen to it again in this Spotify playlist and check out this great introduction to his music on Bandcamp. This episode was edited by Mack Hagood.

Fernández and Caesar talk about the historical material that Patricia drew from in creating the work in her show, specifically the Basque immigrant community in the Great Basin and central California, as well as transhumance pastoralism, and the arborglyphs that this community left carved into groves of aspen trees along their herding routes. Patricia Fernández is a Spanish born artist living and working in Los Angeles. Jedediah Caesar is an artist who lives in Los Angeles and also works in Bakersfield as the Director and curator of the Todd Madigan Gallery at CSU Bakersfield. Geneva Skeen is a Los Angeles-based artist and composer, whose music explores the contrast between the depleting resources of the physical world, and the apparent relentlessness of digital representations. Her latest release, A Parallel Array of Horses, is her first for Lawrence English's Room40. The album melds recordings of voice and the environment alongside various electronics, in order to toy with time, and embody some form of mutant consciousness. Her mix for us tonight is more upfront - at times confrontational or comforting. "Jam Karet" is Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) meaning "Elastic Time" (or "Rubber Hours"). To me, this concept also applies to mixes that include ambient and drone fragments... where the listener gets immersed in sound in such a way that all notion of time is lost; where music could last for minutes, or for hours. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist:start time - sample length - Artist - Title(Album Title, Release Year, Label details) 00:00 04:30 Samora - Uranium(Lontano, 2014, Tranquillo / Psychonavigation TRAN005)03:38 04:21 Witte Ruis - Droon 1.1A(Places, 2014, Lomechanik LOMEK025)06:03 04:56 Orphax - Mantophasmatodea(Oniscus Asellus, 2014, self-released)08:26 02:33 Alvin Lucier - Music for Gamelan Instruments, Microphones and Loudspeakers(Resonance 9.2, 2002, London Musician's Collective RES 9.2 )09:21 02:07 Francisco Lopez - Untitled #240(Untitled [2009], 2011, Baskaru Karu:20)11:05 02:26 Ulises Conti - M(Los Griegos Creían Que Las Estrellas Eran Pequeños Agujeros Por Donde Los Dioses Escuchaban A Los Hombres, 2014, Flau FLAU41)12:36 03:29 Marina Rosenfeld - New York/It's All About(P.A./ Hard Love, 2013, Room40, RM430)15:39 01:05 Paul Schütze - Sacred Agents(New Maps of Hell, 1996, Big Cat ABB 104 CD)16:00 02:00 Brunette Models - Nie Bryza Targane Poczwary Glebin(Impressions of Whispers, 2009, Jamenda 057363)16:30 04:10 Jacaszek & Kwartludium - Sigh (Les Peupliers)(Catalogue des Arbres, 2014, Touch TO;94)19:30 03:34 Slim Vic - Divalater (Part 1)(Brain Mash, 2014, Lamour Records lamourcd001)21:09 03:00 Sava Marinkovic - Opening(Evocation, 2014, self-released)22:51 02:38 Mica Levi - Andrew Void / Lipstick to Void(Under the Skin OST, 2014, Milan, 399 543-2)25:01 02:24 Hortus Conclusus - Drone_66 Denebola(Selected Drones, 2011, Nostress Netlabel NN_LP006_11_11)26:00 01:32 Laurie Spiegel - Three Sonic Spaces I(Unseen Worlds, 1994, Aesthetic Engineering AE 11001-2)27:06 00:31 Tod Dockstader - Four Telemetry Tapes, No. 2(Apocalypse, 1993, Starkland ST-202)27:13 04:31 Pete Namlook - Music for Urban Meditation - Part VI(Music for Urban Meditation, 2004, Fax PK 08/167)27:28 00:46 Tod Dockstader - Four Telemetry Tapes, No. 3(Apocalypse, 1993, Starkland ST-202)28:46 05:39 Porzellan - Between Two Suns(The Fourth Level of Comprehension, 2009, Hibernate HB03)32:33 02:50 Max Richter - Journey 3(Infra, 2010, Fat Cat Records CD 13-11)35:00 03:40 Monolake - Avalanche(Silence, 2009, Imbalance Computer Music ML025)37:21 03:52 Mesektet - Hollow Monolitis(Towards a Bleak Sun, 2014, Cold Spring CSR191CD)39:33 03:07 Erik Enocksson - Epilogue(Man Tänker Sitt, 2009, Kning Disk KD070)41:41 02:38 Kate Carr - Sunset(Overheard in Doi Saket, 2014, 3Leaves 3L030)42:54 02:00 Man Watching the Stars - Alpha Ursae Minoris(Dusk, 2014, CIUIN UIN002)43:31 02:31 Yair Elazar Glotman - Khaypudyr Bay(Northern Gulfs, 2014, Glacial Movements GM012)45:18 04:19 Alva Noto - Alva Noto Z1 (For John Cage)(For, 2006, Line LINE_026)48:21 01:57 The The - Meat Fever(Tony, 2010 Lazarus Cineola 1)49:24 08:10 Svarte Greiner - Final Sleep (Remix by Hecq)(Conversions, 2014, Ad Noiseam adn174)55:12 02:45 Mike Cooper - Jalan Sam Heng(White Shadows in the South Seas, 2013, Room40 RM454)56:16 02:18 Penjaga Insaf - Cross the Border(To Whom it May Concern, 2005, Shortwave Transmission SWT01)57:22 03:09 Penjaga Insaf - Sang Dalang(Sama Sadja, 2010, Power & Steel PAS 27)59:01 07:11 Man Watching the Stars - Fields (Dusk)(Dusk, 2014, CIUIN UIN002)1:06:47 - End

"I'm not formed by things that are of myself alone" This is the key quote (taken from Stoker) for this mix, which is also 'not formed by things of itself alone'. Every detail, every short sample, has its origin in another context, another musical composition, from which it is taken to find a new place in a completely different context. "My ears hear what others cannot hear." "Parallax" is the visual effect that, when you are moving yourself, objects closer to you seem to move by faster than objects in the distance, which slowly seem to move with you in the same direction. In sound, drones seem to create a somewhat similar effect. In some way that is what this mix is about: the background sound slowly moving along with you while some other fragments pass by so quick you cannot even focus. Just don't try to focus. Today we are honored to share with you a special mix from Richard Chatier. With numerous releases on his very own LINE, as well as 12k, Raster-Noton, Room40, Spekk, Die Stadt and many other experimental labels, Chartier is a highly regarded sound artist, manipulator and sculptor of ambient, minimal, and reductionist electronic music. I could continue spewing praise, but will opt for 'less is more' aesthetic, letting music speak for itself, in honor of the master. For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com

MIXES – Ambientblog

Although it was created in March, this mix shows little signs of "Spring". There was no intentional relation, but inevitably the devastating Japan Earthquake, and the frightening nuclear disaster following it, somehow found its way into this mix. The result: a rather dark overall atmosphere, which seems to leave little room for hope. But at the same time, in Europe, winter retreats and daylight returns. Nature shows that it can destroy as well as recuperate. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist: 00:00 Porzellan - Vopar Tar[Parvo] Art, 2009, parvo 00702:15 Max Richter - The Vel D'HivElle s'appelait Sarah, 2010, Editions Jade 05:12 Colin Potter & Michael Begg - CarnethyFragile Pitches, 2010, Omnempathy OMIC108:29 Victor Joaquim - Radio_OEssays on Radio: Can I Have 2 Minutes of Your Time, 2005, Crónica 02009:39 Janek Schaefer - Untitled49 Years from Gesang der Jünglinge (2005-1958), 2005, Sirr 002013:08 Mikko Tarmia - Amb_end_softAmnesia, The Dark Descent (Game Soundtrack), 2010, Frictional Games13:25 Mikko Tarmia - Amb_extra01Amnesia, The Dark Descent (Game Soundtrack), 2010, Frictional Games13:40 Jack Wall - Linking ChamberMyst IV, Revelation (Game Soundtrack), 2005, Ubisoft14:12 Mikko Tarmia - Event_hallwayAmnesia, The Dark Descent (Game Soundtrack), 2010, Frictional Games14:18 Alio Die & Mariolina Zitta - Lithos (Part II)La Sala Dei Cristalli, 2010, Hic Sunt Leones HSL05816:08 Peter Andersson - SarkophagusMusic for Film & Exhibition II, 2010, Old Europa Cafe, OECD13518:07 Deaf Center - Hunted TwiceOwl Splinters, 2011, Type 08022:13 Heitor Alvelos - Had a Scanner been born on the BopsphorusEssays on Radio: Can I Have 2 minutes of Your Time, 2005, Crónica 02022:48 Max Eastley - Aerophones 5Installation Recordings (1973 - 2008), 2010, Paradigm Discs, PD2623:14 The Green Kingdom - Velvet LandscapeHidden Landscapes, 2011, Audio Gourmet AGCD00326:10 The Fun Years - Re: We're Again Buried UnderBaby It's Cold Inside, 2008, Barge Recordings, BRG00528:17 Steve Peters - Hymne (pour un Fils des Étoiles)Erik Satie et les Nouveaux Jeunes, 2011, Arbouse ARBOU02830:58 Gareth Davis & Machinefabriek - Grower, part 1Grower, 2011, Sonic Pieces 01037:28 Sussan Deyhim - PulsePossessed, 2001, Venus Rising Records40:44 Carl Michael von Hausswolff - Life and Death of PbocLife and Death of Pboc, 1986, Radium 226.05 RAPH 013-4(also in the 'Enter the Void' Soundtrack, 2010)42:08 Michel Banabila - The FallAlice in Wonderland & Various Other Works, 2010, unreleased43:47 Eluvium - Ogives RedistributedErik Satie et les Nouveaux Jeunes, 2011, Arbouse ARBOU02846:05 Lexithimie - Flesh and StonesI Rather Die Terrified, 2010, Audio Gourmet AGN01847:28 Antonymes - A Fragile AcceptanceThe Licence to Interpret Dreams, 2011, Hidden Shoal Recordings50:55 Deaf Center - Fiction DawnOwl Splinters, 2011, Type 08052:21 Chris Watson - Runway O2EIncidental Amplifications, 2006, Room40, EDRM40553:03 Alva Noto - Interim (for Dieter Rams)For 2, 2010, Line Line_04454:00 Pleq - Good Night, Pjusk RemixGood Night EP, 2010, Basses Frequences BF2958:06 Porzellan - Nebuleuse IIThe Fourth Level of Comprehension, 2009, Hibernate HB031:00:00 End
