"We made something we could dance to." The Chicago juke and footwork pioneer reflects on 40 years of Dance Mania and his longtime collaboration with the late DJ Rashad. Anyone with a passing interest in footwork and juke will know of Traxman. Corky Strong has a long history in the world of Chicago dance music, first releasing on the legendary Dance Mania label—which is now celebrating 40 years—in the mid-'90s. He's since split his productions between ghetto house, juke and footwork, releasing alongside titans of Black American music like the late DJ Deeon and DJ Rashad. Strong went on to become a member of DJ Rashad's renowned Teklife crew, and he was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes that became a prototype for juke and footwork's evolution. In this Exchange, Strong speaks with RA's Kiana Mickles in New York about how he first became introduced to this world through his cousins, with whom he'd listen to funk and slow jams, Parliament Funkadelic, Farley Jackmaster Funk, James Brown and a variety of hip-hop throughout the '80s. The pieces eventually fell into place, he recounts, when he met the "mysterious kid" DJ Rashad in 1997. Together, they helped shape the music scene in Chicago, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the last few years, Strong has been celebrating footwork's past by putting out a series of albums called Da Mind of Traxman on Planet Mu. He's just released his third volume, and his first since 2014, which was crafted with the help of fellow Planet Mu artist Sinjin Hawke. Strong took on A&R duties to collate the best from hundreds of tracks dating back to 2005. The series is notable in part because it's a catalogue of footwork and its Chicago lineage—juke and house—as well as these genres' soul, funk and rock roots. Strong talks to Mickles about what Chicago's music scene was like in the '80s and '90s, why footwork was so rooted in dancing and where the genre is heading in the future. For the past few years, RA cover star Jlin has been churning out complex percussion compositions that sit at the intersection of IDM, trap, mutant techno and sound art. Her tracks are tactile and structurally complex, stacked drums interlocking with glistening melodies and heaving basslines on groundbreaking albums like Dark Origami. Her rhythms gracefully crosscut over one another like towering blocks in an architecture sketch for a truly cerebral experience. Growing up in Gary, Indiana, the former steel factory worker wears many hats. She produces mind-bending club music—usually for Mike Paradinas's label Planet Mu—scores modern dance performances and arranges for instrumental ensembles. Her process of collaboration is deeply symbiotic, as shown on her new EP, Perspective The acoustic version of the record, written for and performed with Chicago's Third Coast Percussion, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize this year, an unprecedented honour for a dance music artist. Jlin's style is sometimes described as avant-garde, but modernist is a better word. She originally started out making footwork and despite moving away from the genre in recent years, footwork's jittery energy still flows through her productions, a testament to her ability to experiment across styles. Being a math whiz only adds to the angular, carefully calculated feel of her production. In celebration of Jlin's career, Mike Paradinas serves up a 40 minute mix that shows off her range and most importantly, her passion for this music. @mikep @jlinnarlei Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/903

"You can trace techno's origins to the seminal 1988 album Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which featured many producers that are now regarded as techno pioneers." We discuss Detroit techno, Frankfurt's electronic music museum and more in this month's Critics' Roundtable. As we approach the end of May, and with it, Movement Festival in Detroit—one of the longest-running dance music events in the world—Resident Advisor returns to a discussion about electronic music's roots. In this month's Critics' Roundtable, RA music critics Kiana Mickles and Andrew Ryce talk with producer Chloe Lula about the newest release from Detroit "techno soul" stalwart Eddie Fowlkes and a breakout album from a newer Detroit name, DJ Girl, who just released on Planet Mu. The trio also discuss how techno's origins in Detroit's Black communities continue to be contested. The Museum of Modern Electronic Music in Frankfurt, which opened last year (and was written about recently in The New Yorker), has overlooked the city's key role in the creation and dissemination of techno, sparking backlash from the electronic music community. Mickles and Ryce lay out the implications of the continuous omission of Detroit from techno's narrative. Why is electronic music's origins an ongoing debate, and how do we honour its progenitors as electronic music moves further away from its foundations into the mainstream? Listen to the conversation in full. Tracklist: Eddie Fowlkes - Shake Your Hips DJ Girl - Technician Rhythim Is Rythim - It Is What It Is Jossy Mitsu - World's End

Hotflush Recordings turns 20 this year. There'll be an announcement later this week but we're pre-empting it here with an episode featuring the first 'external' artist ever to release on the label. Something I totally forgot to mention in the intro is that we've actually also made a new track, with more than half an eye on those early days of Dubstep, which is out on Friday - get it here. Always so organised on this show. Since his first Hotflush release in January 2004, Distance appeared on the legendary Mary Anne Hobbs Dubstep Warz Radio 1 show, and went on to release albums on Planet Mu and Tectonic, as well as a further 12" with us.He also played three times at our SUB:STANCE parties at Berghain, and has been a mainstay of the biggest Dubstep raves in the UK, including FWD>> and DMZ. He is, in short, a Dubstep legend. We discuss all that, as well as his more recent work with Riz Ahmed, adapting his artistic output during the pandemic, juggling family life, and much else besides. This was a hugely enjoyable conversation for me, and you're gonna love it too. If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Moving far outside of your musical comfort zone is a seductive move in theory but one which regrettably few producers feel able to execute in practice. Drew Lustman, aka FaltyDL, is fearless in his approach to breaking down his own stylistic parameters. His new album, A Nurse To My Patience, is the most striking example to date of that feature of his work. This is an artistic trait which I much admire, and I was looking forward to the opportunity to sit down and discuss it at length without someone who I count as a friend, but one with whom I haven't spent anywhere near as much time one-on-one as I'd like.So we discuss the above, and much else including his encounters with Kanye West, his collaborations with Mykki Blanco, releasing on Planet Mu and Ninja Tune, and much else besides. If you like what we're doing here then you can support the show on Patreon! We'd be honoured and extremely grateful for your contribution to developing the show. DeForrest Brown, Jr. (aka Speaker Music) is a media-theorist, curator, and self-described rhythmanalyst. While he's been based in NYC for the better part of the last decade, he was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, which also happens to be where Sun Ra first landed on Earth. Brown's just-released book, Assembling a Black Counter Culture, traces the cycles of American history through the Great Migrations from the Deep South to the industrial centers of the north and back again. In this episode, Brown discusses his profound sense of future shock, the meaning of rhythmanalysis, and the making of Black Nationalist Sonic Weaponry, his critically acclaimed 2020 album. For as long as there has been footwork, there has been Jana Rush (@jaru-1). The Chicago-born pioneer started on the decks aged just 10 and was producing not long after. Since the mid-nineties, she has put out music that endlessly innovates within the juke and footwork framework. Her coiled rhythms and stripped-back drums are the vehicles for emotions that range from anguish to empowerment. Last year she dropped her second album Painful Enlightenment on Planet Mu and it was a frank listen that spoke of her struggles with depression. This week's mix is a controlled but chaotic fusion of all elements of footwork from the silkier and more melodic side to heavy jungle rhythms and on through electro-tinged bangers. It is brilliantly hyperactive as it ducks and dives through so many emotions, and it finds Jana packing so much in over the course of an hour that it feels like you have been locked in all night long.

Live from Rewire Festival, Planet Mu affiliate Jana Rush and sound researcher Caroline Claus discuss gender politics, audio equipment and urban landscapes. At this year's instalment of Rewire Festival, which took place in The Hague from April 8th to 10th, artists were paired with sociologists and anthropologists for a series of stimulating conversations. One discussion between Chicago producer Jana Rush and Caroline Claus, a Brussels-based sound researcher, stood out for its interconnections between dance music and urban environments as well as gender and technology so for this week's Exchange, we're presenting their chat. Rush, known for her experimental forays into footwork and juke, incorporates a range of textures in her albums. From industrial to funky, her tracks frequently enter the realm of sound art but no matter how avant-garde she gets, her city remains a constant source of inspiration. Whether evoking the groove of house vocalists or the Windy City's politically-charged jazz movement, she's been a pillar of Chicago's club community for years. Claus, meanwhile, focuses on a topic known as "sonic urbanism," or how noise and vibrations impact city spaces such as railways and parks. Whether using field recordings for urban planning or engaging with the concept of sonic warfare, her studies explore interactions between individuals and spaces through sound. It can be said that both Rush and Claus are rooted in a sense of place—albeit in different ways. Rush, for instance, explained how she draws inspiration from music played in passing cars. The two also tackle the role of gender on their respective equipment. Claus mentions how her identity shapes the intentions of her recordings while Rush describes how she felt compelled to master technical equipment because "if you don't know what you don't know, people are gonna capitalise off that and they're not gonna let it go because you're a female." During their 25-minute long talk, Rush also explains how she uses binary code and how people often perceive her as aggressive. Listen on for the full details. In this episode of INSIGHTS, we have the honour of being joined by Jana Rush! Her most recent two records, 2021's ‘Painful Enlightenment' and this year's ‘Dark Humour', on the legendary label, Planet Mu, have seen her not only push the boundaries of her own sound but of footwork as a whole. It's safe to say then that we were thrilled to speak to this visionary producer, Chicago O.G. and one of our favourite artists. Over the course of this interview, Jana discusses her early years and getting into music at a young age via radio, the Chicago scene in the 90's, meeting and working alongside legends such as Gant-Man, DJ Rashad, DJ Deeon, & Paul Johnson and how the scene compares today. We then discuss her albums, ‘Painful Enlightenment' & ‘Dark Humour', going in depth on Jana's approach to production, sampling and pushing the boundaries of the footwork genre. Jana then shares highlights from her recent EU tour and her approach to performing live, before rounding up some of her favourite artists and inspirations, finishing with a peek into what the future holds for her! ---SUPPORT JANA RUSH:Bandcamp - https://jaru.bandcamp.com/musicSoundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/jaru-1Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jana_rush/SUPPORT JANA'S FAVOURITE ARTISTS:DJ Orange Julius: https://djorangejulius.bandcamp.com/musicFoodman: https://foodman.bandcamp.comDJCOREY: https://djcoreybdh.bandcamp.comSUPPORT AWAKE ALL HOURS: www.patreon.com/awakeallhours

Born and raised in Chicago, with roots in the footwork dance scene and many years of DJing under his belt, RP Boo is best known as a pioneer of footwork — a lightning fast genre of music that borrows from hip hop and ghetto house. Although RP came up in the 1980s and 90s, he flew under the radar outside of the footwork scene until the mid 2000s when his debut album Legacy released on Planet Mu, bringing his important and iconic work to the wider music industry, a long overdue step into the spotlight. In this conversation, RP and I discuss his roots as a musician, the art of sampling as a nod to his peers, and the legacy he's spent three decades building. ++ Music: "Bangin on King Dr." - RP Boo (2015) "Baby Come On" - RP Boo (2015) "Try 2 Break" - RP Boo (2015) "11 47 99" - RP Boo "Ivory Surface" - RP Boo (2021)

Following his debut release on Moving Shadow in 1999, Tim Exile has forged a singular path for himself in music. Releasing LPs on Planet Mu and Warp, previously working for German music-tech behemoth Native Instruments, and most recently founding the collaborative platform Endlesss, he has a restless creativity that often leads to unusual results. We cover topics including the pleasures of drum n bass, why there seems to be a culture war surrounding crypto and web3 in music, and whether widening participation in music is inherently a good thing. Infinite Sequence Podcast

Big ups to Jana for this breathtaking mix! DeForrest Brown, Jr. is a media-theorist, curator, and self-described rhythmanalyst. He releases digital audio as Speaker Music and under his own name. While he's been based in NYC for the better part of the last decade, he was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, which also happens to be where Sun Ra first landed on Earth. Brown's upcoming book, Assembling a Black Counter Culture, traces the cycles of American history through the Great Migrations from the Deep South to the industrial centers of the north and back again. In this episode, Brown discusses his profound sense of future shock, the meaning of rhythmanalysis, and the making of Black Nationalist Sonic Weaponry, his critically acclaimed 2020 album. Kristian Craig Robinson has been a familiar face amidst the London musical community for many years having released a sprawling back catalogue of music on the likes of XL Recordings, Planet Mu and Faith & Industry. He has long been acclaimed for his contribution to experimental electronic music and has remained a key figure amidst the local community working in various studios and under the guise of various projects. Until recently he was involved in the running of the studio operating out of the Total Refreshment Centre. Last month marked the release of a new album which he unveiled on his own label, the release was titled "Goatherder" and was a tripped out journey between abstract soundscapes and ethereal experimentalism. We invited him to record a Monday mix for us.
