Seattle's Westland Distillery welcomed more than a thousand people this weekend hoping to get their hands on a bottle of the distillery's first 10-year-old single malt, the 10th Anniversary Garryana. It's largely matured in Garry Oak casks from the Pacific Northwest, and this year's release is more scarce than usual - after thieves stole a semi-trailer with nearly half the year's production of Garryana last month. We'll talk with Westland master distiller Shane Armstrong and managing director Jason Moore on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Portland's Westward Distillery has been saved by investors after filing for bankruptcy, and sales  are down again for Pernod Ricard and Moet Hennessy.

You expect a quiet suburb west of Detroit to feel safe. Neat streets, glowing lampposts over snow-covered lawns — the picture of normal life. Jessica and her husband thought so too when they rented a small house in Westland, Michigan, just four miles from the crumbling remains of the infamous Eloise Asylum. They didn't believe anything from that long-abandoned psychiatric hospital could follow them home… until the winter of 2008 proved them wrong. Almost as soon as they unpacked, the strange incidents began. A bedroom that should have been the warmest in the house would turn ice-cold, as if something inside rejected the heat. Jessica heard three slow, deliberate knocks at the front door on snowy nights — yet every time she looked, the porch stood empty. A heavy Big Boy piggy-bank figurine mysteriously slid across the top of their armoire as though moved by invisible hands. Was it the spirit of her late step-father-in-law, Phillip, playing harmless tricks… or something darker drawn from the haunted soil near Eloise? Thatcher's victories, including a general election landslide and breaking the miners' strike, emboldened her to launch another phase in the reduction of the role of the state in the British economy. Nationalised industries were privatised, with encouragement given to individuals to buy the shares, which they did with enthusiasm. This came on top of the continuing success of council house sales under the ‘Right to Buy' scheme. Extending home and share ownership to far more people, from far more modest backgrounds than ever before, Thatcher claimed, was opening an era of popular capitalism. The reality, however, was more nuanced. Many buyers of shares in privatised companies sold them again, taking a quick profit, because the share price on flotation had been low and it climbed dramatically afterwards. Many owners of former social housing also sold their properties, leading to a large minority ending back again as rentals, but with private landlords not bound by the policy of affordable rents that councils had applied.Similarly, another great initiative of the Thatcher government, the deregulation of the London Stock Exchange, seemed to go brilliantly. London regained its status as a major financial centre. It would only be twenty or so years later that some of the downside emerged, when the encouragement to banks to engage in speculation became a contributing factor to the 2008 crash. The IRA was running a terrorist campaign in Britain too, one that nearly claimed Thatcher's own life, when a bomb was planted in Brighton's Grand Hotel, where she and many leading Tories were staying for the party conference. Thatcher reacted with commendable courage and resolution at the time, and later even went so far to negotiate an Anglo-Irish agreement, again giving the Republic a consultative role in the affairs of Northern Ireland. It didn't go far enough, as the Good Friday agreement would a decade later, but it was an important step,And then there was the Westland affair, when a British helicopter manufacturer ran into difficulties, and a dispute broke out in cabinet over which two options, American or European, to back for a rescue. Ultimately, that led to the Minister of Defence, Michael Heseltine, openly defying Thatcher. That was an ominous event, a first crack in the previously apparently indestructible fortress of support for Thatcher among her colleagues. It was a foretaste of unpleasantness ahead but for the moment that was still quite a way in the future.Illustration: Margaret Thatcher in defiant mood, speaking out against terrorism at the 1984 Conservative Party conference, after the bomb attack on the Grand Hotel in Brighton. Jason drives up to the Skagit Valley to meet up with Shane "Showtime" Armstrong, Master Blender at Westland Distillery. The two walk around the warehouse tasting from a number of single casks and then head down to the Westland distillery in Seattle to spend some time in the sensory/blending room to share some of that experience with you, the listeners. This is an ultra geeky episode that gets into the nitty-gritty of what makes a single cask a single cask and what makes a cask of whisky better suited for a blending component.  ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song - Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo - RØDE for making *really* great microphones - Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers - Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices - Joshua Hatton for producing and editing

The government is investing 13.5 million dollars in Tourism New Zealand, to coax international visitors to Aotearoa; focusing on Australia, Germany, China, the United States, South Korea and India. Tourism Minister, Louise Upston said encouraging visitors means more people staying in our hotels, eating in our cafés, spending in our shops, creating jobs and driving economic growth. But the Westland District Mayor believes the cart is ahead of the horse with infrastructure already heaving under the weight of tourists. Mayor Helen Lash spoke to Lisa Owen.

An MP for 35 years, Michael Heseltine served as Environment Secretary and then Defence Secretary in Margaret Thatcher's government. Following his well-publicised resignation in 1986, he returned to government under John Major and was Deputy Prime Minister for the last two years of Major's premiership. Once seen as a potential successor to Thatcher and Major, he has sat in the Lords since stepping down as an MP in 2001, and in recent years has been an outspoken critic of Brexit. Lord Heseltine sits down with James Heale to discuss his thoughts on the current Labour government, how to fix Britain's broken economy and why devolution should go further. ‘Deeply depressed' by attacks on the civil service – Britain's ‘rolls royce' – he provides his thoughts on various political leaders: Starmer is handling Trump well, Reeves is handling the economy badly, Badenoch is being overshadowed by foreign affairs, and Boris Johnson demonstrated he has ‘no integrity'. And on Thatcher, he says new information has vindicated him over the Westland affair and demonstrated her ‘complicity'. His new book, From Acorns to Oaks: An Urgent Agenda to Rebuild Britain, is out now. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.
