Listen as Tall Cop Jermaine Galloway interviews Stephanie Short, a recovery coach, peer support specialist, and community impact coordinator with United Way who overcame a 25-year battle with addiction to become a beacon of hope for others. Driven by the belief that “If they're still breathing, there is still hope,” Stephanie shares her inspiring story of resilience and self-transformation. From the depths of addiction and isolation in prison, she had to become her own support system, learning to thrive with no one to guide her. Stephanie dives deep into her journey, discussing the power of self-reliance, the value of community, and her desire to "become what I needed" to help others with her lived experiences. This podcast is for anyone seeking inspiration, hope, and the unwavering belief that recovery is possible.

Some words become excruciating in the wake of loss. For my guest today, Katie Joy Duke, that word is expecting. After a whirlwind romance and engagement, Katie and her fiancé were over the moon with the discovery that they were expecting their first child together. A beautiful wedding ceremony and a fairy tale pregnancy, as Katie describes it, left them both shocked when after going into labor, they were told that their daughter Poppy, whose beautiful home had been Katie's womb for the past 9 months, was dead. Katie's relationship to her daughter, herself, to life, to the very notion of expectations is forever changed. In this episode, and in her beautiful memoir, Still Breathing, Katie brings vulnerability, wisdom, heart, and insight to the much-needed conversation around grieving stillbirth, something that affects 1 in 175 pregnancies in the U.S. EPISODE RESOURCES:Katie Joy Duke is an attorney turned life coach who published her debut memoir, Still Breathing: My Journey with Love, Loss, and Reinvention in May 2022. Still Breathing is a heart-breaking love story that captures Katie's experience birthing Poppy, her first daughter, who was stillborn at full-term in 2015. Transcript: Hey Pod lovers. I'm your host Marie and If you're joining us for the first time: Welcome! The Mastercast is a podcast recommendation show that brings you a brand new non-spoiler binge-worthy review every week of the best podcasts in a short and sweet 2-3 minute summary on everything you could want to know, from the number of hosts to on average how long you can expect each episode to be. New episodes come out every Monday. You can find the week's other reviews on the show's social on Instagram @themastercast and Twitter @mastercastpods. If you like what you hear and want to help out this independent show you can find me on Buy me a coffee by searching The Mastercast. I'd really appreciate it. This week's review is onSNAFU with Ed HelmsThis nonfiction podcast from iHeartMedia, FilmNation Entertainment and Pacific Electric Picture Co is a blend of comedy and history. Hosted by actor and comedian Ed Helms, it aims to cover some of the most infamous and sometimes unknown blunders in history. The first season looks at the military exercise with the codename Able Archer 83 and why some historians consider it the closest the U.S came to nuclear war since the Cuban Missile Crisis. A harrowing drama, it is filled with interviews from those involved, old audio, and experts from both NATO and the Soviet Union. Despite the seriousness of the nation's nuclear fears, Helms is able to keep a balance of professionalism and comedy. Overall history is the prominent element. The finished series is pretty long at eight episodes that are on average fourty-five minutes long and the addition of two bonus episodes. This is due to the decent background given on the Cold War and the perspective of the two countries at the time. Apple Podcasts has it at 4.6 out of 5 stars with 498 ratings. Many, if not most, of the negative reviews are in defense of presdient at the time Ronald Regan. Although I didn't think the critique of his actions were all the critical. There should be a second season although confirmation has not been given. Overall an interesting and worth listing to podcast. A little campy at times and there is a recurring scream soundbite that comes about 3 times but isn't bad enough to avoid listening. Similar pods: Red Elvis, Infamous (Campside Media), and American Scandal. Please enjoy some audio that we've held onto from past interviews for just such an occasion. Katie Joy Duke (Poppy's mom) talking about her experience with compounding trauma after a recent cancer diagnosis. Emy Collins (Bash's mom) talking about how making room for grief gets harder the further away you get from your loss. The Sad Dads (Rob, Lila's Dad; Chris, Izzy's Dad; and Jay, Bella's Dad) joking about one of the most ridiculous questions people of child-bearing years face -- "Are you trying?" -- which of course particularly painful if you're facing infertility or have experienced a loss. ::: Things we talk about in this episode: - Answers and Questions | As Long As I'm Living - Nora McInerny (@noraborealis) and Terrible, Thanks For Asking (@ttfapodcast) - Bad Vibes Only and Nora's other books - Sad Nora and the Secret Baby | Terrible, Thanks for Asking - Aeron's Foundation website and Instagram - I Can't Imagine | ALAIL - There Is No Moving On, an Interview with Jennifer Su, Aeron's Mom | ALAIL - Still Breathing book, Katie Joy Duke (@katiejoyduke) - Still Breathing, an Interview with Katie Joy Duke | ALAIL - Empty Arms website - Empty Arms, an Interview with Carol McMurrich | ALAIL - TFMR is Baby Loss, an Interview with Hadley's Mom Jill | ALAIL - Calamity, an Interview about Race and Infant Loss with Emy Collins, Bash's Mom | ALAIL - Sad Dads Club website - The Sad Dads Club | ALAIL - Father's Day Wishes from the Sad Dads | ALAIL --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aslongasimliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/aslongasimliving/support

As Long As I'm Living, rebuilding our Happier Ever Afters after infant loss (SIDS)
In this episode, Judith and Alina are joined by memoirist and loss mama Katie Joy Duke. This is a thoughtful interview about the power of grief, healing, and connecting to our lost loved ones in the stars. Her daughter Poppy was stillborn in 2015, and she turned straight to the page to process her grief and found solace and meaning in the community that followed her journey. Just as her dreams of becoming a published author were coming true, she was diagnosed with Stage IV, metastatic breast cancer on March 18, 2022. She is currently receiving chemotherapy and hopes to write her second memoir about her experience healing from yet another unexpected life challenge. She lives north of Seattle with her husband, daughter Moxie, and scruffy dog Wilson. She accesses power with yoga, serenity through meditation, and joy through song and dance. She believes that laughter is the best medicine, and vulnerability is her superpower. ::: We discuss suicide in this episode. Katie and I talk about her journey through the loss and grief to finding purpose, both in the loss of her first-born daughter, and in her continual reinvention after that loss and now on a journey of living with cancer. Katie is the author of Still Breathing, My Journey Journey with Love, Loss & Reinvention, a memoir about the loss of her first daughter, who she birthed stillborn at full-term, her transformation with her husband and family through that grief into becoming an author, an advocate, coach, and mother of Moxie-- who is vibrant and curious and who, in the most tender of moments, holds space for her parents' memory of Poppy. Katie, a former lawyer, found her purpose which she describes as "it always comes back down to one word, which is love. That is at the foundation of, of everything." Join us for this powerful conversation where we go deep, we go real, and we talk of loss, of love, of hope, and of purpose. My path to healing was both long and winding. Now, In the wake of both birth and death, I own this story by choosing love over fear, acceptance over resistance, and being over doing. —Katie Joy Duke For more about Katie, and to find where you can purchase her book: https://www.katiejoyduke.com For resources for bereaved parents, please see the Appendix in Katie's book. We had the pleasure of interviewing POSEY over Zoom video.Canadian Billboard charting goth-pop meets whimsical alt rock artist POESY. Entitled "Still Breathing", the song is the first single off of her forthcoming full length. While the first half of the album touches on a lot of life's anxieties as we move through trauma, "Still Breathing" realizes the power in forging ahead after a challenging time. Paired with punk-rock guitars and a soaring chorus, POESY procroclaims: “cause you're nothing, and I'm still breathing.” POESY has received acclaim from Billboard, Nylon, Ones to Watch and was chosen to write the original anthem for the Canadian Games 2022. POESY is the solo project of classically trained singer, songwriter and pianist, Sarah Botelho. She was discovered after she appeared on the first season of hit Canadian music competition show, THE LAUNCH. Her incredible breakout performance propelled POESY to new heights yet unseen, landing her a major label deal with Big Machine Records and an opportunity to collaborate with esteemed composer and producer Stephan Moccio (Celine Dione, Avril Lavigne) on her debut single ‘Soldier of Love' . This release charted in the Billboard Top 40 and was followed by a four-track long EP entitled Glass Box Confessional. Her singles “Body Language” and “Strange Little Girl” debuted in the Top 20 at Rock Radio. Classically trained in both singing and piano from the tender age of 4, the musical world has become POESY's playground, having had vast experience in musical theatre, numerous rock bands and even operatic singing. By pairing inspiration from her favourite novels with an air of vulnerability from her own experiences, POESY unleashes her signature siren sound, filled with big drums & bittersweet melodies. POESY has had the recent honour to write and record an original anthem for Canada Games 2022, which she will perform at the opening and closing ceremonies this summer. Her most recent project - her debut LP I Exist - was made in collaboration with UK producer Stephen Lipson (Annie Lennox, Billie Eilish) and explores themes of betrayal and the journey back to one's truest self. Her live show is a choir girl gone rogue – with her whimsical outfits and charming storytelling, she commands your attention and pulls you headfirst into every song. We want to hear from you! “I'm sorry, Katie, but I can't find a heartbeat.” These are the words that changed Katie's life forever. After an easy pregnancy, today's guest went into labor on her due date, never expecting that anything could be wrong. She and her husband had just heard baby Poppy's strong heartbeat a few days before. Now, she was dead? How was that even possible? A stillbirth? In this time of modern medicine, it was hard to even believe that still happened to people. As much as Katie didn't want to believe that those words could be real, they were real and her life was changed forever. It reminds me so much of the words that were said to me in August of 2018 - “Despite our best efforts, we were unable to save your son.” When we hear words like that, we suddenly feel isolated and alone. We are suddenly bereaved parents and we will never be like everyone else again. When we walk along this journey, however, we eventually learn that we are not alone. There are many other bereaved parents out there and together, we can help each other heal. Every time I release a podcast, I can help someone heal just a little bit. As Katie began to slowly heal and live once again, she learned that there are 24,000 stillbirths in the US each year. That means there are 48,000 mommies and daddies out there mourning their own lost babies. That got Katie thinking about how she and Poppy might be able to help those 48,000 parents and others who struggle with loss. When she lost Poppy, Katie had no idea what to expect or what to do, but maybe sharing her story with others might help bring them a little bit of peace and comfort. It might help shine a little light on the path that seems so dark right now. Her book, Still Breathing, was born out of that desire to help others through their little family. Katie writes, “My path to healing was both long and winding. Now, in the wake of both birth and death, I own this story by choosing love over fear, acceptance over resistance, and being over doing.”
This week we welcome, country music recording legend, Junior Brown! With his unique voice, more unique song writing, and even more unique double necked “Guit-Steel” guitar, there has absolutely never been ANYONE like Junior Brown. He's an American Original. Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown showed an affinity for music at an early age when the family moved to a rural area of Indiana near Kirksville. In the following years, Junior began to experience Country music and remembers it as “growing up out of the ground like the crops – it was everywhere; coming out of cars, houses, gas stations and stores like the soundtrack of a story, but Country music programs on TV hadn't really come along much yet; not until the late fifties.” Discovering a guitar in his grandparent's attic, he spent the next several years woodshedding with records and the radio. Junior was also able to tap into music he couldn't hear at home which older, college aged kids were listening to. This was possible due to his father's employment at small campuses throughout the next decade as the family moved twice again. As a young boy he was able to experience the thrill of performing before live audiences, at parties, school functions even singing and playing guitar for five thousand Boy Scouts at an Andrews Air Force Base jamboree; then while still a teenager, getting the chance to sit in with Rock and Roll pioneer, Bo Diddley. Armed with this broad spectrum of influences, he began to develop a storehouse of musical chops. In the early nineties Brown and his band (including wife Tanya Rae) relocated to Texas to the active Austin music scene and landed a weekly gig at the Continental club. Having worked as a sideman for many of the Austin-based acts over the years, Junior was already well familiar with the town. His unique and entertaining combination of singing, songwriting, instrumental and production skills led to a seven record deal with Curb Records that began with “Twelve Shades of Brown” in 1993. He later released two albums on the TelArc label. There were several Grammy nods, a CMA (Country Music Association) award for “My Wife Thinks You're Dead”, movie and repeated TV appearances like Letterman, Conan, Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, SpongeBob, X Files, Dukes of Hazzard, Me Myself and Irene, Tresspass, Still Breathing, Blue Collar Comedy Tour 1 and 2, and more recently, Better Call Saul. And there were the Ad Campaigns; The Gap, Lee Jeans and Lipton Tea. As Junior became more well known, he began to collaborate on projects with some of his heroes. These include a duet with Ralph Stanley for which Junior received a Bluegrass Music Association Award (IBMA), a duet and video with Hank Thompson, as well as duets with video and record collaborations with the Beach Boys, George Jones, Leon McAuliffe, Ray Price, Leona Williams, Lynn Morris, Lloyd Green and Doc Watson. He even played guitar for Bob Wills' Texas Playboys in a radio commercial. Junior is currently finishing up recording on his latest album, “Deep In The Heart Of Me”. Release date is slated for Spring 2017. Junior's performance on the promotional song, “Better Call Saul” was recorded and released both as a video on AMC as well as a flexible 33 1/3rd vinyl record included in the show's box set from Season One. Junior, Tanya Rae and the band continue to tear up the highways and no doubt will be appearing in concert near you one of these days. Seeing Junior live is a definite must, so GUIT WITH IT 'cause he's AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL! For more information and tour dates, visit JuniorBrown.com.
