"Science has already fixed climate change. We know what's causing it, we know what to do about it. The fact that there is paralysis is not the problem of science." Are you interested in listening to scientists? What do you think about the urgency of actions after scientific proof? How can we use the planetary indicators for better urban futures? Interview Marcus Foth, Professor of Urban Informatics at Queensland University of Technology. We talk about his vision for the future of cities, urban visioning, declining cities, opportunities in health-arts-social sciences, donut economics, and many more. Marcus Foth is a Professor of Urban Informatics in the School of Design and a Chief Investigator in the QUT Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC), Faculty of Creative Industries, Education, and Social Justice, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. For more than two decades, Marcus has led ubiquitous computing and interaction design research into interactive digital media, screen, mobile and smart city applications. In this talk Zack describes a number of official and improvised uses of mobile and urban computing technology he's observed in urban India, especially Bangalore. In some cases a lack of traditional hard urban infrastructure directs people to create informational workarounds, in other cases emerging technology drives non-traditional user patterns which play our very differently than in an American city or context. What lessons can we learn from the way institutions and individuals use Urban Informatics in Bangalore?

Marcus Foth overviews various urban informatics projects, exploring the communicative ecology of urban residents, community engagement using public history and digital storytelling, and social navigation for mobile urban information systems. Cities are exciting. Cities are buzzing. They are alive with movement. A rapid flow of exchange is facilitated by a meshwork of infrastructure connections: road systems, building complexes, information and communication technology and people networks. In this environment, the Internet has advanced to become the prime communication medium that connects many threads across the fabric of urban life. The increasing ubiquity of Internet services and applications has led many scholars to question the dichotomy between cyberspace and real space. New media and information and communication technology afford an increasingly seamless transition between mediated and unmediated forms of interaction. Driven by curiosity, initiative and interdisciplinary exchange, 'urban informatics' is an emerging cluster of people interested in research and development at the intersection of people, place and technology with a focus on cities, locative media and mobile technology.
