Are you interested in place-making processes? Our summary today works with the article titled Positioning place-making as a social process: A systematic literature review from 2021 by Poeti Nazura Gulfira Akbar and Jurian Edelenbos, published in the Cogent Social Sciences journal. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Bruce Marshall in episode 226 talking about place-making as the process of bringing out the magic of the place. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how place-making can be viewed as a social process instead of product oriented. This article investigates the variety of approaches, influential factors and outcomes of place-making. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Place-making has shifted from a product-oriented focus by urban designers to a process-oriented, multi-stakeholder approach involving local communities. Place-making can be influenced by four main factors: resident-related, local organization-related, government-related, and physical-spatial factors. Place-making can lead to positive social outcomes such as local empowerment, stronger social ties, enhanced place identity, and improved quality of life when local needs are considered. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: This systematic review discusses the shifted paradigm in the place-making concept, from being focused on physical changes in the environment (product-oriented) created by urban planners, towards place-making as an iterative process that involves various actors other than the planning professionals. Despite this conceptual re-orientation that was emerged in the 1960s, important discussions, such as factors that support or obstruct the process of place-making are often mentioned incidentally in publications without being systematically analysed across cases. Therefore, this paper aims to bring a better overview of the concept of place-making as a process by combining theoretical and empirical research in the planning context. To achieve this aim, a systematic literature review of 61 articles published between 1960 and 2016 has been used. This research demonstrates a variety of approaches, influential factors, and outcomes of place-making. It points out the importance to take into considerations the interplays among the roles of actors, along with physical-spatial elements of places. These factors should be acknowledged in combination with the others, rather than being treated as unidimensional. Such circumstances not only lead to viable place-making but also bring positive social impacts to local communities, especially on gaining local empowerment, enhancing social ties, reinforcing place identity, and increasing quality of life. Dan grew up in Sonoma County, and he has over 20 years of experience in the wine industry. Dan's career in the restaurant industry ultimately led him to wine production, but he worked as a back waiter, a waiter, bartender, operations manager, and finally wine director prior to founding a winery. In 1997, he started Kosta Browne winery with his business partner, Michael Browne, and they worked together to grow that project through direct-to-consumer sales and a nationwide distribution network. We talk about his experiences starting a winery from scratch, learning from his mistakes, and building his team along the way. They have since sold that first project, but it has led to opening the doors to this new effort of creating 3 synergist labels with DK Wine Group. We discuss the business and marketing side of his experiences, and he mentions how he is leveraging his network for giving back to community through Convene and his volunteer work. Thank you to Empire Distributors for making this possible, and I hope you can feel a little bit of the energy that was part of this tasting and conversation here in Atlanta. EU Funded Global Collaboration Hub Aims To Accelerate Development of Carbon Capture Technologies Crowdhelix's new CO2 Removal Helix will bring together industry experts, leading academics, high-tech SMEs, policymakers and investors to accelerate the development and deployment of technologies that will remove carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. Specifically designed to create synergies between stakeholders across multiple disciplines, the CO2 Removal Helix will foreground impact and bridge the gap between research, industry and investors to fast-track innovation. Support for more Carbon Capture Technologies Speaking at COP28 in Dubai, the leader of the CO2 Removal Helix, Professor Ondej Mašek from the University of Edinburgh, outlined why he believed interdisciplinarity and broad stakeholder engagement are central to the sector delivering on its potential. "Building carbon removal technologies and systems is only part of the challenge facing this emerging sector". "We also need to be able to scale capacity and deploy those solutions if we are to extract the 5 - 16 gigatonnes of CO2 required to keep global warming to 1.5C, according to research published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change". "That requires the rapid scaling of carbon removal research, alongside a simultaneous expansion of investment, manufacture and deployment of technology". "Overcoming that challenge requires experts and actors to collaborate across numerous fields and specialisms. Fortunately, the infrastructure that will help us do that is beginning to come together". Echoing Professor Mašek's assessment, Crowdhelix CEO, Michael Browne, believes that recent announcements have signalled the emergence of a distinct sector that is attracting some of the world's leading innovators and investors. "The establishment of Stripe-owned company, Frontier, changed how investors see carbon removal technology". "In an instant, Frontier became the leading backer of early-stage carbon removal technologies having secured nearly $1 billion in funding from a group that included Alphabet, Shopify, Meta and McKinsey". "Since then, the conversations around carbon removal have become increasingly tangible". "We're no longer talking about the technology in an aspirational way, real discourse around regulation is now taking place. The creation of the EU's Carbon Removal Certification Framework expert group manifests this evolution". "At Crowdhelix, we want to create a focused open-innovation community that brings together stakeholders from across this rapidly growing sector". "If we can bring scientists, SMEs, regulators, policymakers and investors together at an early stage, I believe that we can help to accelerate the development and deployment of carbon removal technologies". The EU-funded C-Sink project is indicative of the rapid evolution of the carbon removal sector. The 5.2 million project seeks to lay the foundations for regulators to create a standardised and transparent European CO2 removal market. The key project within the CO2 Removal Helix, C-Sink brings together 24 organisations from 11 different countries, each of whom possesses complementary skills and expertise in carbon removal technologies, climate law, carbon trading and stakeholder engagement. The multidisciplinarity nature of the project symbolises how stakeholders are working together to establish regulations and standards that will propel innovation according to Professor Mašek. "The carbon removal sector has been negatively influenced by a lack of regulation and high-quality standards". "The current self-regulated market relies on an unsatisfactory patchwork of third-party verification of the removals achieved at individual sites". "This has allowed low-quality carbon credits to enter the market, lowering credibility and prices to levels at which high-quality permanent removals cannot compete". "The purpose of the C-SINK project is to deliver a complete package of worked-up proposals to suppo...

Are you interested in circular economy? Summary of the article titled Circular economy: a brief literature review from 2021 by Erick Hungaro Arruda, Rosangela Andrade Pita Brancalhao Melatto, Wilson Levy, and Diego de Melo Conti, published in the Sustainable Operations and Computers journal. This is a great preparation for our next interviewee, Dr Nicole Garofano in episode 171 talking about circular economy. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see circular economy as an effective tool to trigger sustainable developments. This article presents many understandings and the evolution of the circular economy in research, highlighting some future prospects for the concept. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Circular economy proposes a change in the extraction-production-disposal paradigm of the current linear economy. Circular economy is based on design of manufactured products with added value and maximum use in longer life cycles, creation of versatile products with multiple uses, restitution of solid waste to the industrial sector, and a systemic approach to supply chain management. Circular economy is presented as a concept of sustainability with the greatest probability of favourable economic development. Find the article through this link. Abstract: Hitherto implemented economic mechanisms and development processes have led the planet to face numerous environmental and ecological depletion challenges. In light of this, Circular Economy emerges as an effective tool for triggering a sustainable development process. This article aims to present different perspectives and concepts of circular economy. To that end, a qualitative study was conducted and the methodology of systematic literature review was applied, so as to obtain solid knowledge about the theme, using the most recent and relevant articles. Scielo, Science Direct and Google Scholar database were the source of the articles that met the defined criteria, described in six steps: search key words; only scientific articles considered; publication between 2015 and 2020; in English; with 100 or more citations; relevant content to the theme. As a result, an extract of the researched articles and a comparison between the scientific literature on this subject is presented, showing some evolution of the aspects of the Circular Economy, such as designing of new products, emerging of new legislation and adoption by industry. Although the study was not conclusive on how the evolution of Circular Economy will take place, authors suggest future studies to assess the transition towards an economic circularity. Also, it is recommended that future studies consider case studies as a model for assessing Ciruclar Economy progress in the light of legislation and economic interests. Are you interested in Aboriginal value integration into water planning? Summary of the article titled Integrating Aboriginal cultural values into water planning: a case study from New South Wales, Australia from 2019 by Bradley J. Moggridge, Lyndal Betterridge, and Ross M. Thompson, published in the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how Aboriginal cultural values can enhance water management. This article investigates New South Wales' government's Aboriginal Water Initiative and provides insights into engagement and consultation. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Water management, its terminology, administrative structures and implementation, is complex, and this is not unique to Australia. Indigenous and Aboriginal involvement in water management can establish more culturally responsive and sustainable practices and trust. The AWI experience provides a set of approaches, experiences, protocols and principles for this engagement that can inform future water management initiatives. Find the article through this link. Abstract: Australia is the driest inhabited continent on Earth and has an acute need to manage its water resources effectively. Australian Aboriginal peoples have a profound knowledge of surface water and groundwater which has allowed them to thrive for thousands of generations even in the most arid parts of the landscape. Aboriginal peoples place a high priority on protecting water, but the challenge is to ensure that their values are integrated into water planning. The Australian New South Wales (NSW) government's Aboriginal Water Initiative (AWI) (2012-2017) sought to include Aboriginal cultural and spiritual values in water management. The AWI operated under the NSW Government's Water Management Act 2000, which seeks to protect the cultural and spiritual values of water and the benefits to flow to Aboriginal peoples. Speaking from the perspective of the previous leader of the AWI, this article will reflect on its inception and structure, particularly focussing on approaches of engagement and consultation. These were highly structured and included a focus on cultural training and protocols and benefited from having Aboriginal staff involved. While ultimately discontinued in 2017, a reflection on the AWI provides useful insights into how engagement and consultation can be operationalised in water management and policy. Are you interested in both smartness and the city in the smart city concept? Summary of the article titled Ontological review of smart city research from 2017 by Arkalgud Ramaprasad, Aurora Sánchez-Ortiz and Thant Syn, presented at the Twenty-third Americas Conference on Information Systems. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how academic research investigated smart cities in 2016. This article investigates how smartness is very much interesting for the research community, but the city seems largely unexplored in the smart city term. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: The introduced ontological framework approaches smart cities from smartness with structure, functions, focus and semiotics and city with stakeholders and outcomes which can be used to investigate any smart city initiative or research. In the investigated research, the authors found more focus on the structure aspect with systems and IT than on stakeholders and outcomes. Researchers should consider the interdisciplinary nature of the smart city research and must integrate technological, social, and urban aspect of the smart city with the aim to achieve the desired outcomes in a more unified approach. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: The meaning of the word “city” has evolved since the first urban civilization was labeled as such more than 5,000 years ago. The concept of Smartness in Cities appeared initially because of the advancements in information technology; now cities are working diligently towards being considered “Smart”. However, the term Smart City is still conceptually vague and sometimes biased towards the use of information technology, and not on the city. This article a) presents an ontological framework of Smart City which is logically constructed but grounded in the literature of Smart Cities, and b) maps 373 journal articles—published in 2016 on the topic “smart city”—onto the framework. The mapping reveals that Smart City research in 2016 mainly focuses on the Smart part of the framework, specifically the structural elements, while the City part remains largely unexplored.
