Lessons from reading Man's Search for Meaning, a memoir by Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor. The book chronicles his experience in Nazi concentration camps, his psychological insights into human nature at its worst, what motivates people to live even in the worse conditions, and explores his theory of logotherapy. Frankl earned his M.D. in 1930 and began working at Steinhof Psychiatric Hospital where he led the treatment of suicidal women, before he was sent to the camps. During the Holocaust his wife died in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp, his father died in the Theresienstadt Ghetto concentration camp, and both his mother and brother died in Auschwitz. However, it was during his time in the concentration camps that he further developed his theory on the importance of finding meaning in life. He emphasized that discovering meaning is the primary motivation in life. It's our will to meaning which gives hope in a hopeless world. And if a man loses hope and his will to meaning, then his “strength to carry on… seldom returned.” - 00:00:00 - Introduction & excerpt from Man's Search for Meaning 00:02:37 - Summary of the memoir & logotherapy 00:04:47 - Getting stripped of all belongings 00:05:30 - Finding meaning 00:06:49 - Frankl's thought on success 00:08:00 - Become worthy of suffering 00:13:35 - Changing perspective 00:14:35 - Urbanites suffer from existential anxiety 00:15:35 - Importance of a full inner life 00:16:57 - Ability to endure horrible conditions 00:18:20 - Nightmares 00:19:20 - 3 ways to find meaning 00:20:00 - Cigarettes as a sign of impending death 00:21:45 - F—'s Dream of getting rescued 00:24:25 - Meaning is subjective & concrete 00:27:00 - Nietzsche's ‘Why' 00:31:30 - Live with conviction 00:32:33 - Power of love 00:38:50 - Becoming virtuous 00:40:00 - Why read this book 00:41:00 - Seeking solitude - IJ Makan is a philosopher, designer, and martial artist. - Social & Website Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ijmakan Twitter https://twitter.com/ijmakan Website https://becomingantifragile.com Newsletter https://ijmakan.substack.com

Gunsmoke is an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television. When aired in the United Kingdom, the television series was initially titled Gun Law, later reverting to Gunsmoke. The radio series ran from 1952 to 1961. John Dunning wrote that among radio drama enthusiasts, "Gunsmoke is routinely placed among the best shows of any kind and any time." The television series ran for 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975 and lasted for 635 episodes. At the end of its run in 1975, Los Angeles Times columnist Cecil Smith wrote: "Gunsmoke was the dramatization of the American epic legend of the west. Our own Iliad and Odyssey, created from standard elements of the dime novel and the pulp Western as romanticized by Buntline, Harte, and Twain. It was ever the stuff of legend." Radio series (1952–1961) In the late 1940s, CBS chairman William S. Paley, a fan of the Philip Marlowe radio series, asked his programming chief, Hubell Robinson, to develop a hardboiled Western series, a show about a "Philip Marlowe of the Old West". Robinson instructed his West Coast CBS Vice President, Harry Ackerman, who had developed the Philip Marlowe series, to take on the task. Ackerman and his scriptwriters, Mort Fine and David Friedkin, created an audition script called "Mark Dillon Goes to Gouge Eye'' based on one of their Michael Shayne radio scripts, "The Case of the Crooked Wheel" from the summer of 1948. Two versions were recorded. The first, recorded in June 1949, was very much like a hardboiled detective series and starred Michael Rye (credited as Rye Billsbury) as Dillon; the second, recorded in July 1949, starred Straight Arrow actor Howard Culver in a more Western, lighter version of the same script. CBS liked the Culver version better, and Ackerman was told to proceed. A complication arose, though; Culver's contract as the star of Straight Arrow would not allow him to do another Western series. The project was shelved for three years, when producer Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston discovered it while creating an adult Western series of their own. Macdonnell and Meston wanted to create a radio Western for adults, in contrast to the prevailing juvenile fare such as The Lone Ranger and The Cisco Kid. Gunsmoke was set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the thriving cattle days of the 1870s.

EPISODE NOTES Book Gridlock: Why We're Stuck In Traffic And What To Do About It by Randal O'Toole Passage 1: Smart growth is based on the premise that Americans need to drive less to reduce congestion, energy consumption, and environmental impacts. To reduce driving, the vision calls for spending more money on urban transit, intercity rail, and bike/pedestrian facilities. The vision also calls for reducing the average size of lots for single-family homes and increasing the percentage of people who live in multifamily housing or mixed-used developments, both of which are supposed to reduce driving. Passage 2 Efficiency vision is based on the premise that the resources available for transportation improvements are scarce and should be used as effectively as possible. This vision relies on user fees rather than taxes to pay for transportation. Transportation decisions are made by setting goals (sometimes called performance standards) and ranking transportation projects according to their ability to meet those goals. Goals could include congestion relief, energy savings, pollution reduction, and safety. Reducing driving is not a goal but merely one possible means to attaining some of the other goals. Since their inception, transportation start-ups like Uber and Lyft have garnered tremendous media and policy attention not only for their service but also for their impact on the labor market. In this two-part series, host Dennis Wisco introduces key concepts of policies that speak to this topic, such as California Assembly Bill 5. He outlines non-partisan arguments that apply economic theory to exploring the bill's policy implications. Tune in to this episode to learn more about the California App-Based Driver's Regulation Initiative, the history of the independent contractor status, and a crash-course breakdown of classical economics related to current legislation. California Assembly Bill 5 (AB-5) is a state statute that establishes that it is the employer's burden to prove that a worker is an "independent contractor" and not an "employee" through the application of a three-prong analysis. This analysis identifies an employer's duty to provide greater labor protections to workers through industries' regulation and holds the employer accountable if they fail to do so. Historically, "independent contractors" have been excluded from certain protections, including minimum wage, unemployment benefits, and overtime pay. AB-5 challenges the basis for exclusion and opens doors for gig economy workers to access the same benefits that traditional employees enjoy. The California App-Based Driver's Regulation Initiative is a question on the November election ballot that brings AB-5 back into the spotlight as a response to Uber, Lyft, and other app-based employers refusing to reclassify their drivers as employers. A vote in favor of the ballot initiative would essentially repeal AB-5 and enable companies like Uber and Lyft to construct and adopt their own policies regarding labor and wages specific to the app-based mobility industry. A vote against the initiative would uphold AB-5 and apply its approach to the policy decision that app-based drivers are "employees" rather than "independent contractors." Tune in to part one of this two-part series as Dennis delves into the classical economist view of the outcome of AB-5 and the California App-Based Driver's Regulation Initiative. Classical economics argues in favor of self-regulation, free trade, and follows a "laissez-faire" approach. Therefore, classical economists believe that the bill should be repealed in order to best benefit companies, consumers, and, ultimately, the American economy as a whole. The outcome of this initiative and AB-5 will have a tremendous impact on both the app-based economy and the business models that affect the movement of people and goods. Urbanites are fleeing cities for beach communities and small country towns! Tensions are spreading faster than the Coronavirus. Your host turns to the last exhibition he saw in New York (Countryside the Future! from Rem Koolhaas) and the first dystopian film he watched in confinement (Michael Haneke’s Time of the Wolf) for answers. Plus a beach to beach chat with Helen and Martin from the Allusionist!

If you live in a big city, it can be easy to forget what it’s like to depend on a car. Urbanites tend to walk, take the subway or bus, ride a bicycle, or hop in a cab to get virtually everywhere. But I grew up in the suburbs and know the vast majority of you listening to this podcast have a deep, personal relationship with your car. After all, next to your home, your car is one of the biggest assets you’ll purchase in life, which is why you are likely to have a ton of questions that need to be answered. Where does one turn to learn the best car buying tips? Maybe you have used the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Issue? Today we go one better with Mike Quincy, Automotive Specialist at Consumer Reports. Mike may have the coolest job in the world. He gets to race, I mean drive, basically every car imaginable around a test track and then write the reviews you read, a dream job for a total car geek. With almost 30 years under his belt, Mike has the answers to the most-frequently asked car questions: Buy or lease?Sedan or SUV?Do I need to buy the extended warranty?Which manufacturers should I avoid? We also discussed the reliability of high end vehicles like Mercedes and BMW and what the future holds for autonomous cars. So as you hit the road this summer and fantasize about a new set of wheels, this episode is a must listen before you walk into that dealership. Have a money question? Email me here. On this episode, I’m joined by Dave and Ginger Shields of Pastured Life Farm in O’brien, Florida. Dave and Ginger started their life as urbanites in Jacksonville, but it was their preschool aged son that made them leave the city and the suburbs in search of a life more connected to their food. Their intention was to homestead and they did that for several years, but eventually, that homestead model transformed itself into a pastured poultry business. At this point, they’ve been on the farm for eight years. Today, they grow approximately 5,000 Cornish cross broilers and up to 1,000 laying hens in a sexlink / heritage bird flock rotation. Their new life is brimming with opportunity, which often rises up out of everyday farm challenges. The feed co-op they formed is one such example. They’re moving up to 100 tons of feed a month. We discuss one of my favorite topics, processing. And what’s it like to farm on sand? Dave talks through some of his tips for managing low organic matter pasture in Florida. Broadcast from 1936 through to 1947 with just an occasional break. Revived again from January 1956 to September 1957 as CBS Radio Workshop with pretty much the same format. This was drama with a difference. Columbia Workshop was not everybody’s cup of tea and in terms of audience popularity it was always noted that it was never a strong contender for the title “Radios Top Rated Drama Series” and yet it was always considered to be the drama program that led the way in radio standards. Columbia was the first to mexperiment with what radio drama was all about, introducing new techniques never before used in over the airwaves drama and because it received little encouragement from established writers, actors, etc., it was only by breaking new ground with new ideas and new techniques from writers who were not versed in the old ways that it was going to survive. THIS EPISODE:March 30, 1956. CBS network. "The Exurbanites". Sustaining. A chilling (but true) horror story about the problems of living in the suburbs. Eric Sevareid (narrator). 1/2 hour.

Marcus Foth overviews various urban informatics projects, exploring the communicative ecology of urban residents, community engagement using public history and digital storytelling, and social navigation for mobile urban information systems. Cities are exciting. Cities are buzzing. They are alive with movement. A rapid flow of exchange is facilitated by a meshwork of infrastructure connections: road systems, building complexes, information and communication technology and people networks. In this environment, the Internet has advanced to become the prime communication medium that connects many threads across the fabric of urban life. The increasing ubiquity of Internet services and applications has led many scholars to question the dichotomy between cyberspace and real space. New media and information and communication technology afford an increasingly seamless transition between mediated and unmediated forms of interaction. Driven by curiosity, initiative and interdisciplinary exchange, 'urban informatics' is an emerging cluster of people interested in research and development at the intersection of people, place and technology with a focus on cities, locative media and mobile technology.
