Ever since humans have journeyed to space, their meals there have proved to be, well, nothing to write home about. But that could change after a Michelin-starred chef teamed up with the Florida-based startup Space Perspective to take fine dining to our upper atmosphere in late 2025. Six guests are set to ascend aboard Spaceship Neptune to the stratosphere, where they will enjoy an immersive dining experience served up by Danish Michelin-starred chef Rasmus Munk. Munk, 33, will travel with the guests and serve the meal himself, from a small kitchen. He says his menu will be inspired by the impact of space innovation. "We want to tell stories through the food," Munk says. "We … want to talk and highlight some of the research that's been done through the last 60 years."  "I think that will make an even stronger impact when you're up there and looking down," added Munk, who will fly with the six ticket buyers. Spaceship Neptune is more of a balloon than a rocket. The company says its pressurized capsule, attached to a balloon, will lift to an altitude of around 100,000 feet (30,480 meters) above sea level where guests will dine while watching the sun rise over the curvature of the Earth. Organizers are promising an out-of-this-world experience for those with an appetite for adventure. But such an astronomic menu comes with a fittingly astronomic price tag — $495,000 per ticket. Organizers say the trip will last six hours and that they are still in discussion with potential participants.  It's one of the latest offerings by private firms that include Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and SpaceX. The flight won't technically reach "space"—Spaceship Neptune will ascend to around 19 miles (30 kilometers), well below the Karman line, the boundary separating Earth's atmosphere and outer space, which is some 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Earth. Once again, by popular demand, here's another oft-requested topic. With the recent release of the Oppenheimer film, I thought this story was quite timely. Qian Xuesen is called "The Father of China's Missile and Space Program." What's not as well known is the key role he played in the late 1930s and 40s in the United States rocket and jet propulsion programs. He was there, along with Frank Malina, Weld Arnold, Apollo M.O. Smith, Jack Parsons, and Edward S. Forman, when the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was created. Startup company Karman+ recently won a $1.3 million state incentive, payable over eight years, to move to Colorado. The firm is developing plans to mine water and minerals from asteroids. It joins hundreds of companies that make up the second-largest aerospace industry in the country.

One year after launching a balloon carrying 13 chronograph movements into the stratosphere, Fortis has returned to Esrange, home of the Swedish Space Corporation, to take what they learned from 2021's experiment to the next level. This time around, we'll be launching a rocket into space. The rocket will be carrying 12 scientific experiments, including 13 fully assembled special edition Stratoliner watches 260km above the Earth's surface (so well beyond the Karman line) where they will experience around six minutes of micro-gravity before the rocket falls back down to Earth, its landing cushioned by a two-stage parachute.Will the watches survive? Located 100km above sea level, this boundary is what separates aeronautics from astronautics. Despite the breathtaking complexity and amount of danger involved in spaceflight, it is a wonder that only 3 humans have met their end above the Karman line. The Russian cosmonauts who flew on the Soyuz 11 mission to board the world's first space station in 1971, were victims of an unfortunate series of mechanical failures which led to the fatal depressurization of their crew capsule. The three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev, are listed as the only humans to have died in space. But it took the Soviet Union two years to list their official cause of death. The Iron Curtain was in full effect and many parts of the Soviet Space Program were tightly guarded secrets.
