WBSRocks: Business Growth with ERP and Digital Transformation
Send us a textThe ERP landscape is undergoing significant transformation, marked by a shift toward vertical specialization and regional compliance as vendors move away from generic, one-size-fits-all solutions. This evolution reflects the growing demand for industry-specific functionality and adherence to localized regulatory requirements. At the same time, artificial intelligence is reshaping ERP capabilities by driving smarter automation, predictive insights, and more agile decision-making. Businesses are also moving toward modular architectures, favoring best-of-breed integrations over traditional monolithic systems to gain flexibility and scalability. As a result, ERP vendors are adopting divergent strategies—some doubling down on vertical depth, while others build expansive ecosystems to support extensibility—highlighting the increasingly fragmented and dynamic nature of the ERP market. In this episode, Sam Gupta engages in a LinkedIn live session with Vinnie Mirchandani, Founder, Deal Architect in a live LinkedIn session and discusses ERP Trends in the Age of AI.Background Soundtrack: Away From You – Mauro SommFor more information on growth strategies for SMBs using ERP and digital transformation, visit our community at wbs. rocks or elevatiq.com. This podcast interview focuses on the heroics and entrepreneurship we have witnessed in the past three months of the pandemic. My guest is Vinnie Mirchandani.Vinnie has become a regular guest on my podcast. In fact, it was only 7 months ago where we discussed ‘a decade in review’. He’s the founder of Deal Architect - a Technology strategy and negotiation firm listed as a leading "boutique" by the Black Book of Outsourcing. Earlier in his career he had various technology consulting roles at PwC in the US, Europe and Asia, and worked as an industry analyst at Gartner. He wrote various books about the evolution and future of enterprise software, amongst which Silicon Collar, The New Polymath, The New Technology Elite and SAP Nation 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Other than that he’s an inspiring blogger and always curious about innovation. In fact, he’s recently conducted close to 50 interviews with entrepreneurs and change-makers from around the world about how they stepped up to make a difference in the global pandemic. I had the honor to be featured in one these interviews as well where I shared various examples from different industries and countries. And that’s exactly that triggered me to invite him again to my podcast. We explore some of the most inspiring examples Vinnie uncovered and what we can learn from this in terms of leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, and our ability to drive meaningful change. Here are some of his quotes:As the pandemic was starting to hit the US, we had heard about some of the innovations in Asia and Europe. We were starting to hear about US healthcare heroics, in the media, but I was also starting to hear of a lot of business heroics.Either scaling up or scaling down or innovating quickly or pivoting quickly, has required heroics. I was so glad to talk to these executives because the media is not giving them much attention. The media is so focused on the negative stories that unfortunately, these business executives are not getting enough attention. I wanted to get their word out on all the things that they're doing which deserve to be saluted.During this interview, you will learn three things:How to pivot 180 degree overnight and turn a 90% drop in revenue back into growth again. That the art of creating momentum is about two things: relevancy and creating a sense of urgency. Let’s not forget this after the pandemic – it’s what marketing should be all about. The key is to not just try and keep selling what you had in the bag in January. The world has turned upside down since. That opportunities for innovation are plentiful, and every executive everywhere needs help We just need to establish an eye for it and be willing to work with them. I had an amazing session with Vinnie Mirchandani on the future of digital. Vinnie is an award-winning analyst, author of several best-selling books on technology and its impact on society and business. We discuss topics like the evolution of digital transformation and how the current crisis accelerated the adoption of digital. We explore the differences in how technology innovation moves in different industry sectors and what makes leading digital adopters different from laggards. Vinnie shares plenty of specific examples of how companies dealt with the crisis and what transformation has already happened. We also get to peek into the future and consider how the changes will be permanent in healthcare, education, and other sectors.
Vinnie Mirchandani and I discuss the big themes that came out of his new book SAP Nation 3.0 (pre-order here.) There's plenty to enjoy and unpack in what I think is his best book of recent times.
Vinnie Mirchandani is President of Deal Architect Inc, a technology advisory firm. The firm helps clients take advantage of disruptive trends like cloud computing and business process outsourcing (BPO) before they go mainstream. Between this firm and previous role at the technology research firm, Gartner he has helped clients evaluate and negotiate over $10 billion in technology contracts. The Black Book of Outsourcing has recognized his firm as one of the top boutique advisory firms. He writes a blog, Deal Architect which focuses on waste in technology and has been rated by Industry Standard as one its favorites. His innovation blog, New Florence. New Renaissance averages 500 posts a year on innovation in infotech, biotech, cleantech and other areas. His books, The New Polymath and The New Technology Elite have been called “innovation firehoses.” His recent work Silicon Collar, has been called "an important addition to the discourse on 21st century technology impacts". His work, SAP Nation, was more investigative but carried his trademark style, which is case study-heavy and research-intensive. His books bring unique perspectives from his twenty-five years consulting with customers and his travels and speaking engagements across fifty countries. After graduation from the Neeley School of Business at TCU, he spent his early career at Price Waterhouse, first as an accountant, then as a technology consultant (that division is now part of IBM). He has been quoted in most major technology and business publications, and he has presented at a wide range of industry events.

In this 47 minute highlight replay from a live interactive Crowd Chat, hosts Dennis Howlett and Vinnie Mirchandani explore and debate the issues raised by Mirchandani's new book, SAP Nation: A Runaway Economy. This event replay was prepared for this podcast feed by Den Howlett and Jon Reed, two of the co-founders of diginomica.com. SAP and Enterprise Trends Podcasts from Jon Reed (@jonerp) of diginomica.com
With the release of his book - one of the most important business books in recent years (see my review on Amazon) - and with the reverberations of SAPPHIRENOW/ASUG Orlando still lingering, the timing was right to have Vinnie Mirchandani in The ERP Lounge to talk about his blogs on enterprise software and innovation. I wanted to dig into his opinionated takes on SAP and his critique of what he has dubbed the SAP "egosystem." I was especially looking forward to asking Vinnie about how the "polymath" practices he describes in his book can be emulated by individuals in their own skills development. I wanted to ask Vinnie how you reconcile the need to have broad expertise with the problem of becoming a "jack of alll trades, master of none."
