Alex Howlett, an independent scholar affiliated with The Greshm Institute, discusses Universal Basic Income (UBI). Beginning with Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), an offshoot of post-Keynesianism, he addresses its key principles: notably Keynes' belief that the Great Depression was caused by a deficiency in aggregate demand, leading to sustained involuntary unemployment that the market could not self-correct. Howlett deflates Keynesian theory that assumes that economic policy aims for full employment, asking, “To what extent actually does it make sense for people to be workers?” while explaining that labour is not the most effective or efficient way to get money to people. Howlett sees UBI as solving this problem of distributing money to people while dispensing with the need to ensure that everyone has a job, dispelling the notion that only if every single person is working can an economy run at full capacity. Assessing some of the major criticisms of UBI—from fiscal feasibility, economic incentives, and social justice—he responds to the fears of inflation, worries that borrowing will lead to reckless fiscal policy and a loss of central bank independence, or that UBI would dismantle already established welfare programmes. Responding to counter-arguments to UBI, such as the claim that the economy will not have the labour pool it requires or that people won't be working as much, Howlett turns these arguments on their head demonstrating how the demand for labour is artificially inflated as a way of getting people jobs, noting the historical overstimulation of the financial sector to encourage firms to borrow so they hire workers. Howlett contends that with UBI, the economy does not have to play into the push and pull of labour supply and demand, stating, “You hear this fear that people aren't going to work as much at the same time that you hear this fear that there aren't going to be enough jobs available, right? It's like, well, wait a minute…. Isn't it good if those things kind of go together?” Get full access to Savage Minds at savageminds.substack.com/subscribe
In this episode, I sit down with Kristie Howlett, NP, to talk about a topic so many women worry about but rarely get complete information on. Kristie brings her years of oncology and integrative experience into this discussion about bone health, estrogen changes, metabolic influences, and the difference strength training truly makes. I loved the way Kristie explained how muscle communicates with bone, why sunlight and circadian rhythm matter more than most women realize, and what she routinely sees in her practice when women finally receive personalized support rather than a blanket recommendation for calcium. Ep 579 - Labour Negotiations & Job Action Guest: Kevin Howlett By Stuart McNish Canada Post is in the midst of job action by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. They're not on a full strike; instead, they're still delivering mail but not all of it. On September the 15th, the Union implemented a national ban on delivering flyers and neighbourhood mail. This followed an overtime ban in May. Air Canada just concluded negotiations with flight attendants. After a three day work stoppage that wreaked havoc on the airline and passengers, the attendants were ordered back to work but the union ignored the order, negotiations resumed, and they went back to work. Weeks later, union members rejected the company's offer by 99.1% but they also kept working. In British Columbia, the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) initiated job action aimed at gaining an 8.25% wage increase over two years. The union's website says, “We escalated job action in several key areas: Public service workers who support B.C. 's mining operations joined the strike. An overtime ban was announced in corrections and sheriff services. As the strike carried on, BC Liquor Store Workers walked off the job and as the job action continued into week eight, 25,000 of the 34,000 Union Members in government jobs were on strike. At the time of recording this interview, there is job action but not a full-out strike. We invited human resource specialist Kevin Howlett to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the changing nature of labour negotiations and job action. In this case, the court considered this issue: Does a Section 1983 claim brought in state court require the plaintiffs to first exhaust state administrative remedies? The case was decided on February 21, 2025.The Supreme Court held that where a state court's application of a state exhaustion requirement in effect immunizes state officials from 42 U-S-C §1983 claims challenging delays in the administrative process, state courts may not deny those claims on failure-to-exhaust grounds. Justice Brett Kavanaugh authored the opinion of the Court on behalf of the 5-4 majority holding that Alabama may not enforce an administrative-exhaustion rule. When a state law or rule functionally immunizes government officials from suits under § 1983, that law is preempted and unenforceable. Section 1983 ensures that individuals can seek a federal remedy for violations of their constitutional rights. Alabama's exhaustion requirement, applied to delays in benefits processing, creates a procedural barrier that prevents claimants from ever challenging those delays under §1983. This precedent follows decisions in Haywood v Drown and Howlett v Rose, which held that states cannot erect procedural obstacles that effectively nullify federally guaranteed rights. The Alabama Supreme Court's ruling in this case violated that principle by conditioning § 1983 suits on completing the very process claimants sought to challenge for unreasonable delay.Characterizing Alabama's rule as “jurisdictional” does not change this result. A state cannot use jurisdictional labels to avoid compliance with federal law, especially when the rule in question operates as an immunity provision. Nor does the potential availability of mandamus relief in Alabama courts justify the exhaustion rule, as requiring claimants to complete state-mandated processes before suing simply reinstates the same barrier. Because Alabama's exhaustion rule functionally immunizes officials from § 1983 suits regarding administrative delays, it is preempted, and the judgment of the Alabama Supreme Court is reversed.Justice Clarence Thomas authored a dissenting opinion, in which Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett joined in part. The opinion is presented here in its entirety, but with citations omitted. I was not familiar at all with China's national college exam, the gaokao, until reading about it in Susan Blum's book, Schoolishness, and talking with her about it on a podcast episode we released in August – episode 152, you should check it out – and I'm incredibly grateful to Susan for making the connection with my guest today. Zachary Howlett is associate professor of Anthropology at the National University of Singapore, joining me from Singapore, and author of the book, Meritocracy and Its Discontents: Anxiety and the National College Exam in China. I thought at first ah, sure, every country has its school gatekeepers and methods of rationing secondary & post-secondary education – the SAT & ACT in the US, or the GCSE's in the UK, for example – so how is this any different? But what I was not prepared for in Zachary's work was the sheer magnitude of the gaokao as a deeply Chinese cultural, economic, political, and even a magical and religious phenomenon that touches every aspect of life, and for which there really is no American equivalent. The blurb on the back of the book from Karrie Koesel captures it so well, “Zachary M Howlett opens the black box of the gaokao to reveal that it is not only a fateful rite of passage, but also a complex social phenomenon laid in with ritual, magic, dark horses, examination champions, latent, potential, luck, character building, social inequity, and the possibility of changing one's fate.”Meritocracy and its Discontents book link Hosted on Acast. Michael ‘Mike' Howlett's talks about his experience of flying successive generations of aircraft during his career as a pilot spanning over 70 years. Having learnt to fly on a Tiger Moth bi-plane, he flew first-generation jet fighters (the Meteor and Vampire), then the first generation long-haul, land-based piston-engine airliners in the form of the Boeing Stratocruiser. This was followed by flying the first of the long-range, swept-wing jets, the Boeing 707, and then the first of the ultra-large passenger aircraft, the Boeing 747 ‘Jumbo'. These aircraft not only ushered in different eras of air travel with a new level of passenger experience, they posed new challenges for their operators and aircrew. Mike provides fascinating insights into these changes. Mike Howlett was interviewed by Sir George Cox as part of the Royal Aeronautical Society/National Aerospace Library's oral history project ‘If I only didn't do it that way…….” Capturing history from the horse's mouth to inspire today's aeronautical professionals. Jordan Howlett just needs a minute. Give him that, and he's liable to have you hooked. Thanks to his highly recognizable, signature mirror-selfie videos, Howlett (San Diego Magazine's cover star for our 2024 Best Restaurants issue) has amassed upwards of 30 million followers across his social channels by sharing fast food hacks and wisdom with deadpan delivery and a genuine love of food. Some 70 million people see his videos every month on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. He's a one-minute, one-man daily Netflix special. But it hasn't been easy. Growing up financially strapped meant that Howlett's opportunities were often limited. Stress has been a theme. He's been belittled and bullied. He slept in his car while chasing a dream. It took a maniacal work ethic and healthy amount of delusion to propel him to the social media stratosphere. “I didn't realize how creative my parents were until I realized just how much we were really struggling,” Howlett tells us in this episode of Happy Half Hour. Born in LA County, Howlett moved to Oceanside in the fourth grade after spending his early life in the desert town of Victorville. Howlett began attending Oceanside High as a sophomore, where he joined the baseball team. “Originally, I was thinking maybe football,” Howlett says. “I'm on my way to the football field and the baseball coach sees me, and he points me right at the baseball field and says, ‘Why don't you go over there?'” That interception changed the course of Howlett's life. At 16, with no sports experience, Howlett became hooked on baseball. Before long, he started dreaming of playing Division 1 ball. He wanted to go pro. But his teammates had been playing since preschool. Howlett had some catching up to do and 100 people—teammates, coaches, everyone—telling him he had no chance. But Howlett didn't care. He just got to work, training every spare minute, working three times harder than everyone else. It paid off. Howlett found himself on fields he was never supposed to see… at least until Covid killed his baseball career. Then it was back to low-wage fast food jobs—until that work ethic came in handy for growing a social media audience. In this episode of HHH, Howlett joins us in the studio to recount his childhood in Oceanside, his path from awkward high school baseball wannabe to Division 1 athlete, and his road to internet superstardom. Along the way he recalls how his Fast Food Secrets Club came to be, recoils from pickle pizza, and tells us about one of his absolute favorite local spots to eat. Want to see his videos?
