Hello Everyone!Social media is awash with black squares and arguments about how to best deal with RACISM. We thought it was a very simple subject, really: Just Don't be a Racist! But it turns out that as with all things in life, there are so many levels of complexity....so here are our recommendations of podcasts that have helped us get a mental grip on it all. It's a long episode, but we blame Gyles Brandreth and his discussion about the culinary delights that are Baked Beans. So here we go:1619 - from the New York Times “1619” is a New York Times audio series, hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones. The series examines the very long shadow of American slavery. If you decide to listen to anything at all in order to try to understand the US side of things, please listen to this.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/podcasts/1619-podcast.htmlAbout Race with Reni Eddo-LodgeThis is a podcast presented by the author of the bestselling Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race. Featuring key voices from the last few decades of anti-racist activism, the podcast looks at the recent history that has led to the politics of today. It's "uncomfortable" listening at times, but if you want to get a grip on racism in the UK, it's a genuine must listen.https://www.aboutracepodcast.com/ The PatdownEpisode 61 - George FloydMs. Pat is a US comedian and author (check out her book Rabbit) who brings an honest, in your face, and hilarious perspective to her shows. There is a WHOLE LOT OF SWEARING, so if you are of a delicate constitution, get the swear jar ready.https://www.mspatcomedy.com/podcast/#podcasts Trevor Noah, via the Daily Show Ears Edition From Comedy Central’s Podcast Network this is the Ears edition of the Daily Show. It's presented by the brilliant and funny Trevor Noah. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-daily-show-with-trevor-noah-ears-edition/id1334878780And finally, a bit of a change of direction, Something Rhymes with Purple This is a podcast about words and language. It's hosted by Susie Dent, author and the star of dictionary corner on 8/10 Cats Does Countdown and by broadcaster and ex MP and author Gyles Brandreth. They are a brilliant pair, and there is no end to their knowledge about the origins, meanings and insights into how and why we use the words we do. https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/something-rhymes-with-purple/id1456772823?mt=2And that's it! At the risk of overusing our favourite adjective (too late?) we think that all of the above are BRILLIANT and, as far as BLM goes, essential listening. As always, thank you for listening! If you want more podcast recommendations follow us on Twitter at @PodTrawlersAnd if you like this podcast, please do spread the word, and give it a gold star on wherever you listen to your podcasts! Thank you also to Anna Meredith for her brilliant music, and this week also to the brilliant Childish Gambino, and the passionate and oh so articulate Kimberly Jones.#bestpodcasts#podtrawlers#1619#NikoleHannahJones#BLM#childishgambino#thisisamerica#kimberlyjones#somethingrhymeswithpurple #trevornoah#bakedbeans#thepatdown#georgefloyd#aboutrace#renieddolodge#slavery#susiedent#gylesbrandreth
Anna and Amanda discuss the Jhalak Prize winner, Afropean by Johny Pitts. Our recommendations for anti-racist books: Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Edo-Lodge The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead Too Much Lip by Melissa Lucashenko (ep 85). Our book of the week is The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak, Booker-shortlisted author of 10 Minutes, 38 Seconds in This Strange World (ep 87). This explores Turkish history through rebellious Asya and her family. Layered with textures, food and strong women, we loved this novel. Coming up: our Pride Month recommendations. Follow us! Welcome back to Reader Beware. Season One, Episode Three: Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race | Written by Reni Eddo-Lodge | https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/why-im-no-longer-talking-to-white-people-about-race-9781408870570/ | Music by Tory White | Panel (Name / Area of Focus): Thomas "Roter" / Health Policy | Alixis / Law and Social Justice | Zac / International Business and Marketing | About the Book: In 2014, award-winning journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge wrote about her frustration with the way that discussions of race and racism in Britain were being led by those who weren't affected by it. She posted a piece on her blog, entitled: "Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race." Her words hit a nerve. The post went viral and comments flooded in from others desperate to speak up about their own experiences. Galvanized by this clear hunger for open discussion, she decided to dig into the source of these feelings. Exploring issues from eradicated black history to the political purpose of white dominance, whitewashed feminism to the inextricable link between class and race, Reni Eddo-Lodge offers a timely and essential new framework for how to see, acknowledge and counter racism. It is a searing, illuminating, absolutely necessary exploration of what it is to be a person of color in Britain today. Alexa Von Hirschberg is the editorial director at Bloomsbury. She told me about how starting a jazz night got her her first job in publishing at Canongate, working with legends like Kate Tempest and Patrick DeWitt and on amazing novels like Natasha Pulley's The Watchmaker of Filigree Street and All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison. We also spoke about Ben Myers' new novel The Offing and her work on the seminal Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. This episode was the first episode all 4 main hosts were together along with a top class guest, the hugely talented Zu from the Book of Zu Podcast. We talked about a wide variety of things surrounding race and discrimination and had an interesting quiz section which the host organised. The book we covered for the week was Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. Check his podcast out and keep an eye out for his other creative work. Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds for a show that ended up having heavier subject matter than we'd expected. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us (and a surprise vocal appearance by Meredith's Boston Terrier, Cooper - oops!) and we'll go over a few of the books we’ve finished reading lately. Then we’ll chat about what’s next up on the TBR pile. This episode includes an accidental foray into non-fiction books, because we have a lot of words about them this week! Next, we both discuss the ways we keep track of our reading: spreadsheets, journals, and apps. We finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands: something that has consistently ranked on our favorites list or been well-beloved by the people in our lives that we’ve convinced to read it. Perhaps it will become one of your favorites as well. Time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book we mentioned in this episode. Reni Eddo-Lodge (author of Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race and winner of the Jhalak Prize 2018), in conversation with Dr Rebecca Surender (Pro Vice-Chancellor and Advocate for Diversity, University of Oxford).
Ramadan Brain has well and truly hit us over here bruh. This was a fun little conversation, checking in on how Ramadan is going and discussing how annoying it is to hear "NoT eVeN wAteR?!" from people. We arrive a little late to the party, we know but discuss Childish Gambino's "This is America" music video. What did you interpret it as? Why did someone ask Karrueche Tran what she thinks of the video too? Eyec has been reading a book called "Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race?" so you know we had to talk about some sensitive political sh*t. ++ SONGS OF THE WEEK ++ TWLVE: SHAKKA ft. Reni Eddo-Lodge was frustrated when conversations about racism were met with angry denial and white guilt. In 2014 she published a blog post: ‘Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race’. Her words hit a nerve. The post went viral and comments flooded in. Reni invites us into a discussion that moves beyond the personal and into the structural. With incisive wit, she explores the political purpose of white dominance, whitewashed feminism, and the link between class and race. Chaired by Benjamin Law.
Audre Lorde (1934-92) described herself as ‘Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet’. Born in New York, she had her first poem published while still at school and her last in the year of her death in 1992. Her extraordinary belief in the power of language – of speaking – to articulate selfhood, confront injustice and bring about change in the world remains as transformative today as it was then, and no less urgent. Your Silence Will Not Protect You (Silver Press) brings Lorde’s essential poetry, speeches and essays together in one volume for the first time, with a preface by Reni Eddo-Lodge and an introduction by Sara Ahmed. To celebrate the publication, Reni Eddo-Lodge, author of the acclaimed Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race, discussed Lorde's work and legacy with Sarah Shin, co-founder of Silver Press.
