Have you ever felt so busy doing good things that you started missing God in the middle of all of it? In this solo episode, I'm sharing something that has been very personal and real in my own life — what it looks like to steward our calling well, why we need to stop treating our God-given calling like a hobby, and how to create the margin we need for God to actually move.I'm sharing what the Lord has been teaching me through my own season of burnout, over-committing, and unintentionally taking control. In Episode 5 of Your Best Yes, we revisit the story of Esther—not the simplified childhood version, but the complex and costly reality behind her courage. Living as a Jewish woman in Persia, married to an unpredictable king, surrounded by insecure and power-hungry men, Esther had every reason to stay silent. Yet when faced with the annihilation of her people, she chose a courageous yes, shaped by fasting, prayer, and deep trust in God's sovereignty. This message explores how Esther's bravery was rooted in a quiet trust that God was working behind the scenes, even when He seemed absent. As the story unfolds, we see a remarkable reversal: a passive queen becomes a bold strategist, mourning turns to celebration, and destruction gives way to deliverance. Esther's yes reminds us that when we trust God's providence, seek His guidance, and step forward despite fear, He meets us with the courage and wisdom we need. And ultimately, her story points us to the greatest reversal of all, the grace we receive through Jesus.

Have you ever asked God for help and received an answer you didn't want? We often come to God expecting a dramatic fix, a breakthrough moment, or a clear resolution. Instead, sometimes He gives us a simple instruction. In this final message of Your Best Yes, we look at the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5, a powerful, respected man desperate for healing who almost walked away because God's solution felt too ordinary. Naaman's story reminds us that the best yes is often an ordinary yes. The small step. The unimpressive act of obedience. The humble decision to forgive, confess, serve, or try again. Healing didn't come when Naaman understood the plan. It came when he obeyed it. If you've been resisting a step because it feels too small or too slow, this message is an invitation to trust God with the next faithful thing. Your delay does not cancel His grace, but your obedience opens you to receive it.

Ever faced a moment when you knew the right thing to do, but also knew it would cost you something? This message explores that tension through the story of Nehemiah, a man whose life was comfortable, influential, and secure until he heard a report that broke his heart. From a place of distance and safety, Nehemiah chose to say yes to God's call to step into brokenness he did not create, taking responsibility rather than deflecting it. His yes pulled him out of comfort and into a story much larger than himself. As the story unfolds, we see how Nehemiah's obedience cost him his comfort, his career, and his sense of control. He leaves the security of the Persian palace, risks his position with the king, and steps into uncertainty without guarantees of success. Like Dietrich Bonhoeffer decades later, Nehemiah models a faith that refuses to stay safe when faithfulness requires courage. This is not reckless obedience, but prayer-soaked trust that chooses faithfulness over self-preservation. For most of us, a costly yes won't involve rebuilding a city wall or confronting an empire. It will show up in ordinary places: relationships, work decisions, acts of service, or steps of faith we've been delaying. This message invites us to pray long enough to gain clarity, then place the outcome in God's hands. Because clarity doesn't always come all at once, and certainty rarely comes before obedience. Sometimes your yes is costly. Say yes anyway—because every costly yes we give flows from the costly yes Jesus already gave.

You know boundaries matter — so why does saying no still feel like betrayal? This episode exposes the deeper identity-level misalignment and shows you how to create boundaries that don't just work… but feel like you.You know the script: You say yes, even when you're stretched thin. You keep the peace, carry the load, and tell yourself, “This is just what it takes.”But beneath that over-functioning is a quieter truth: Saying no still feels wrong — not because you're weak, but because your identity is wired for performance and approval. In this episode of the Identity-Level Recalibration podcast, Julie Holly shares a deeply personal reflection on the tangled guilt behind boundary-setting — and why sustainable boundaries require an identity shift, not a time hack. You'll explore:The real reason saying no triggers guilt, obligation, and confusionWhy high performers override their own needs, even with the best boundary scriptsA powerful reframe that moves you from resentment to rhythmHow your yes might be protecting a role that's quietly eroding your alignmentYou'll also hear a faith-rooted story about The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst — and how one friend's timely suggestion led Julie to rewire her understanding of identity, boundaries, and divine alignment.—Today's Micro Recalibration:Ask yourself:“Where in my life have I been saying yes out of fear or obligation, not alignment?” Then ask: “What would a boundary rooted in self-trust look like in that space?”For leaders:“Where have we been absorbing friction instead of setting clear expectations?”You weren't meant to burn out to be trusted.Sustainable boundaries don't come from behavior tweaks — they come from identity recalibration.RESOURCES:BOOK: The Best Yes, by Lysa TerKeurstIf this episode gave you language you've been missing, please rate and review the show so more high-capacity humans can find it. Refining focus has been far from easy, but it is truly necessary to make room for our best yeses! We have some truly exciting new things in the works, including a product shop that will be a living example for our students, a brand-new in-house art agent, and a potential journal publication for our industry! I am so excited to explore these opportunities while staying aligned with our core mission, and I really hope that you will walk away from this episode of the show inspired to take a closer look at your own focus! It is said that when you say YES to something, you're saying no to something else, and which gets what answer is truly a picture of your values and priorities - particularly where God falls in your priorities!   On this episode, I welcome my client Jess Cutler, multi-business owner who shares her personal testimony of how God showed her what saying YES to Him meant for her first business and what was coming next. Follow along with her journey of entrepreneurship, first in her own strength and then through her surrender. Most every episode a guest says something that hits me as a profound truth, one I have probably heard before and forgotten, and certainly one I need to be reminded of. Robyn Rebold-Smith spoke of making choices very intentionally. How giving her ‘best yes' to one thing meant saying no to other things. No to things that she would be missing out on but would give more quality and strength to the ‘yes' somewhere else. I have been sitting in this wisdom, how simple and balanced it is.Robyn is committed to being real and that means having challenging conversations when necessary. She investigates and gathers information to see things from all perspectives. Then she looks at her part in the situation to see how to make things better. She loves people and wants to have positive impact. And her greatest passion? Raising the two human beings that call her mom. The Grace Filled Leader-Work Life Balance, Productivity, Time Management, Emotional Intelligence, People Pleasing, Overwhelm

As Christ-followers and servant leaders, sometimes we get confused and overwhelmed by all of the opportunities to serve that come our way.  I recently spoke to an amazing Christian woman who serves in and outside her work place in so many ways.  It is amazing that she is still standing upright.   This lovely woman serves professionally in profound ways.  She serves her family and her church in huge ways.   But as I listened it sounded as if all of the commitments related to serving are squeezing out time for herself, and she's struggling to create more time and space for quiet time with God, for things that bring her joy and for healthy goals that she has.   Her beautiful service-oriented heart leads her to feel like she has to say yes to everything that would be considered God-honoring work. It's so important to her to be a dedicated follower of Christ.   Christ is an example of servant leadership. But are we actually supposed to say yes to every form of service that comes our way?  If not, how do we know when it is ok to say “no” to God-honoring work?   Today we are talking about ways to determine what is truly a God-assignment for you and what is perhaps intended for someone else.  God-honoring does not always equate to God-assigned or God-appointed.  I am giving you permission to say “no” when you can't give it your “Best Yes”.   I hope this episode blesses you!   Xoxo,   Tanya   The Grace Filled Leader Resources:   Connect: support@gracefilledleader.com Community: Christian Women in Leadership Community Coaching:  Christian Life Coaching with Tanya Time Management Coaching:  More Time Method Strategy Session Leave me a question or comment for the show: Leave a Message for Tanya Freebies: 7 Day Gratitude Journal                   Time Audit Tool   If you enjoyed today's episode, the best way you can thank me is to leave a 5-star rating and a written review on apple podcast.  This is the best way for other listeners to find the show and for me to know how best to serve you with the content you enjoy.   Click on “written review” link above, scroll all the way to the bottom, and click on the little purple link that says “Write a Review”

You're Worth It!

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2023 13:11

Saying no to something means saying yes to something else. Saying yes to something means saying no to something else.     So why is it so hard? Why is it so hard to say NO to someone?    Recently on multiple occasions, I've had someone ask if I could meet up with them for coffee.  My immediate response in my head was “I don't want to” quickly followed by the self-condemning thoughts of ”ugg I”m such a horrible person.”     Why was I equating the thought  “I don't want to do something” to me being a horrible person?!    Co-Dependent much? Sidenote- Co-Dependent basically is being so concerned about making others happy or desperately doing all you can to please other people, to make everyone else happy, and is a strong sense to be needed and wanted by others. It is very common but what you may not know is it's actually a form of manipulation…you rarely show up authentically and leads to a lot of bitterness and resentment which is a LOT to unpack maybe at a later date.  (if you want to learn more about that the book The New Codependency by Melody Beattle is a great resource)   But I don't want her to think I'm too busy for her or too busy for anyone, I want to be perceived as having time for everyone because that would make me a good “Christian Friend”.    So basically I want to be in control of how I'm perceived by others I want to be in control of what others think of me. Basically, I want to be in control, HAHA!     So why does one seek to “control”? Often the root is to feel SAFE. It feels REAL unsafe to not be able to control someone's perception of us because if we can't then there is the possibility that they could choose to judge us, reject us, or decide to think something about us that isn't true.     But you know what the craziest thing of all is, even if I was perfect and truly had complete control of how I'm perceived they could STILL choose to judge, reject or decide differently about me (its called free will) and that, if I'm being honest initially feels downright terrifying.   That feels out of control.   That feels unsafe, doesn't it?!    What's even more fascinating to me is that Jesus Christ, LITERAL perfection, God incarnate, who was without sin, had people HATE him, misjudge him, mock him, reject Him, and ultimately kill him!  And you know that the Bible says over and over and over and over in between His time being with and ministering to people…He went to a solitary place to pray. He tapped into and prioritized connection, communion, and TIME with God REGULARLY.  He knew what “his assignment” was and what it wasn't.  He was able to handle the opinions of others because he was SOLID in his opinion and God's opinion and identity of himself.    So many of us walk around this life being extra careful and extra cautious of what we allow others to see and don't even realize that our motivation to appear so put together or so “perfect” is because we DESPERATELY grasping at avoiding the possibility of feeling an uncomfortable or out of our control feeling someone else “might” have of us.     Did you know everything we do or don't do is because of a feeling?!   The reason you do everything you do and the reason you don't do the things you don't do it because you are trying to FEEL a certain way or NOT FEEL a certain way.     It's truly fascinating. Test it out.  Our THOUGHTS are what create certain FEELINGS and from FEELINGS we are motivated to do or NOT do anything and everything.     No seriously, test it out.     The reason you work out or don't work out is because of a feeling….that is fueled by a thought you are choosing to think.   The reason you are bad with money or good with money is because of a feeling you have towards money…that is fueled by a thought you are choosing to think about it.     The reason you show up as a leader or shy away from leading is because of a feeling you have about your leadership….that is fueled by a thought you are choosing to think about it.    The reason you spend time working or don't spend time working is because of a feeling you have about your work from a thought you have.    And here's a kicker, we don't fall out of love with our spouse, we just stop thinking loving thoughts towards them….which makes our feelings change.     FEELINGS AREN'T FACTS!   We'll really be diving into this one in February inside of Leading Leading on the topic of transformation and unconditional love for ourselves and others and how we get to create as much love in our lives as we want ANYTIME WE WANT!  The only way to FEEL more love in your life is to THINK more loving thoughts   And in turn, this even affects our PHYSICAL bodies, it's fascinating!  Are you blessing or cursing your body with your thoughts about yourself?!    But back to feeling bad for saying no to someone.   A couple of guidelines I ask myself is “is this my assignment?” If we are here by assignment and in partnership with God in our calling some things will be FOR us and some won't.  Sometimes we have to trust that we aren't the one to help them and that someone or something else is. (We might need to give up that hero complex, we can't save them all and that's ok)   Also, when I'm saying no to someone what is the YES I AM saying yes to? Celebrate and focus on that! Don't just focus on the no, focus on when you said no it meant you saying YES to something else that is important.  For me, I KNOW that I know that I know if I don't have down time and time to process and reflect and have the energy to pour into my family and into Leading Ladies then I'm doing what I've been CALLED to do a disservice.  They aren't getting the BEST of me if I exhaust myself with what “isn't my assignment” in this season.      I'm not saying use being an introvert or come in agreement with debilitating anxiety and never have a face-to-face conversation with someone…that's a whole different podcast episode.  But do take a moment and be aware of your thoughts and feelings….aware that feelings aren't facts and make POWERFUL DECISIONS on purpose.  Powerful decisions produce the fruit of refinement and peace…not bitterness and resentment.     And as always check in with yourself….and if your motivation to do something is only because you don't want to be perceived or judged a certain way if you don't….probably not the best or healthiest motivation.     Blessing to you and blessings to your BEST YES and trusting God with the rest ;)  Join me at leadingladiesmovement.com to sign up!

Heather Avis is the founder of The Lucky Few, a New York Times best-selling author, podcaster and a Down syndrome advocate, working to create a more inclusive world where everyone belongs. For more than a decade, she has led this effort by shouting worth, shifting narratives, and reimagining what it looks like when we embrace our differences. Heather just released her 3rd book called Everyone Belongs, a children's book that teaches kids about being loving and inclusive especially to those who have disabilities. Heather patiently and graciously talked through all my questions about what it's like to be a mom of kids who have Down syndrome and gave beautiful advice on how we can teach our kids to be more inclusive and why she believes it starts with our kids. I learned so much from this interview and was left feeling so uplifted and I know you will too.   Time Stamps: [00:59] - Heather Avis talks about The Lucky Few and where the phrase comes from. [02:22] - How can we tell a “truer story” about Down syndrome? [05:19] - Who is Heather's “Scariest and Best Yes”? [07:04] - “You can't know what you don't know.” [09:27] - When speaking about people outside of our own community, we should get our cues from that community. [12:17] - Heather shares the spark she felt the moment she read this email from a social worker. [14:54] - What was it like to finally complete the adoption? [16:39] - How did Heather's family react to the decision? [19:22] - Heather talks about dealing with society systems that try to put a limit on who her children are as people. [21:04] - Every person is already valuable, even when in pursuit of better. [24:02] - What made Heather decide to say “yes” to another baby diagnosed with Down syndrome? [26:50] - Parenting is one step at a time for every parent. [28:11] - Everyone belongs. [30:56] - Heather shares examples of how parents can have open conversations with their kids around disability and differences. [33:47] - You are equipped to handle your journey, and there is a community here to help you.
