Today we are bringing you an interview with Madeleine Wickham, also known as the international bestselling author Sophie Kinsella. As you may have read, Sophie lost her battle with glioblastoma. Sophie was a dear friend and beloved by readers around the world. Sophie's Shopaholic series was a global phenomenon… 50 million readers (and counting) read about the worlds that Sophie created. Sophie was a balm and a comfort in this weary world, and she brought us 30 novels in 30 years. Our last conversation was about her What Does It Feel Like? Sophie's novel about Eve, a woman who wakes up in a hospital and can't remember how she got there. The novel was published a year ago- and it became an instant bestseller. Readers related to Eve's journey, the pain of sharing a diagnosis with her children, the good husband, who is a rock and the celebration of small victories that shored up the strength of the family in the face of a daunting illness. In this conversation are Sophie's thoughts on life, death, creativity and the journeys of our souls… We hope you enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Beyond excited to welcome Amy Lea back to Books Are Chic! Romance icon, Bravo stan, and an absolute ball of joy, Amy is truly one of my favorite guests. Nothing was off-limits as we dove into Real Housewives drama, Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, the heartbreaking loss of romance legend Sophie Kinsella, and—of course—the star of the show—The Bodyguard Affair, her latest rom-com that delivers on swoon, spice, and everything in between. We gabbed about the importance of romance, her inspiration and personal ties to the story, what's next on her writing horizon, Justin and Katie (yes—the former prime minister and the pop star!), and so much more.Add any of Amy's novels to your holiday wishlist—they're the perfect companions for travel, cozy nights in, and a much-needed seasonal escape!

Australia enacts the world's first social media ban for children under the age of sixteen; one woman tells us that for her son, who has a disability, it's like losing a lifeline. We'll remember Sophie Kinsella, whose "Confessions of a Shopaholic" novels earned her legions of fans. Her editor tells us the author was as special as her books. After we heard about a rank ginkgo tree in a Nova Scotia historic garden, we heard from you about your own gingko struggles -- and how you odour-came them. As It Happens, the Wednesday Edition. Kelly talks with bestselling author Sophie Kinsella (Shopaholic series) about life after her 2022 brain cancer diagnosis. Sophie shares what it was like to edit a novel she couldn't remember writing, explains her nightly gratitude practice with her husband Henry, and describes how she's learned to focus on what truly matters. The conversation weaves through her writing process, her relationship with sleep, and her decision to turn her medical journey into fiction rather than memoir, all while bringing her characteristic wit to a candid discussion about healing. New York resident and author, Flora Qian was born and raised in Shanghai but has lived in Singapore and Hong Kong, where her ancestors had lived, and in Washington D.C. before settling in New York. This cross cultural and multilingual experience influenced her debut novel, “South of the Yangtze.” At once a coming-of-age story and a meditation on language itself, South of the Yangtze is Flora Qian's award-winning debut novel that follows Yinan Qian, a girl growing up in Shanghai at the turn of the century. Set against China's rapidly changing political, economic, and social environment from the 1980s to current day, South of the Yangtze is a thoughtful reflection on both physical migration and migration between languages. Layered with history, it provides a moving portrait of China's only child generation and the meaning of identity. In an interview, Qian could discuss: WRITING: · South of the Yangtze is fiction but draws from Flora's life experiences. Did this make it easier or more difficult to find Yinan's “voice” while writing? · With language being such a central theme to South of the Yangtze, why did Flora choose to write the book in English? · The book frequently references Chinese words and history. How did Flora balance explanation for an audience that may not be well-versed in Chinese culture while remaining authentic to her vision? · Which books have influenced Flora the most as a writer? In South of the Yangtze, Dream of the Red Chamber has a special place for Yinan and her friend, Jie. What is its significance? CHINESE CULTURE & LANGUAGE: · Her experiences growing up in China during the only-child mandate, which lasted from 1979 to 2015. · Flora has lived in Shanghai and Hong Kong, as well as the United States. What were the major cultural differences? Did they inspire South of the Yangtze in any way? · Did Flora's experience living in Hong Kong during the protests of 2019 – 2020 influence South of the Yangtze? · What it was like to witness enormous socioeconomic shifts in China through her childhood and into her adulthood. · One of the book's main themes is how language shapes thought. With Chinese being one of the oldest living languages, is it especially poised to do so? Why did Flora choose to write the book in English? · Given how rapid the changes to China were following the Cultural Revolution, how does South of the Yangtze preserve a specific and unique moment in China's history? · There are frequent references to Chinese folktales in the novel. How do they play a role in Flora's writing life? · One of the early relationships the protagonist has in South of the Yangtze is with her Mandarin-speaking teacher, who was also an activist in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protest. What is the significance of this character and their relationship? · Migration is one of the central themes in South of the Yangtze. Yinan is an emigrant (from China) and Simon is a first-generation Chinese American. They seem to share a special connection. How does Flora's experience of being an emigrant inform the novel? Sherylbass999@gmail.com or sheryl@mckinneymediagroup.com FLORA QIAN was born and raised in Shanghai. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Fudan University in 2005. After graduation, she worked briefly in the publishing industry in Shanghai, where she was as an editor and an interpreter. In 2007, Flora moved to Hong Kong for a master's degree in Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. During that time, she translated Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic and Sister into Chinese, which was published in 2009. Afterward, she worked in the financial sector in Hong Kong for six years.

#1 bestselling author Sophie Kinsella joins Zibby to discuss WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?, an extraordinary, unforgettable novel about a successful novelist who faces a devastating diagnosis and must learn to live and love anew—a story that is rooted in Sophie's own battle with brain cancer and ensuing memory issues. Sophie opens up about her journey and shares how this book came to be—it involves slowly dictating notes into her phone when she couldn't even write. She talks about fiction as her safe space, her use of humor in the story, the support she's received from her husband and children, and her personal realization that the little, everyday moments in life are the ones that matter. If you remember the #butnotmaternity campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic you'll recall that women were sometimes left to give birth without their partners. Those restrictions for maternity care were left in place far too long affecting the mental health of mothers and staff. That's according to evidence given to the Covid-19 inquiry which this week is looking at the subject in detail. The inquiry has been listening to the impact on women from 13 pregnancy, baby and parent organisations. We hear from our correspondent who has been following it, Jim Reid, and from Jenny Ward, the CEO of the Lullaby Trust, who gave evidence on behalf of all the organisations. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR. DON'T BOTHER WATCHING THIS DRAMA. Judy and Linda are dumbfounded by "Miss Night and Day" (낮과 밤이 다른 그녀), the JTBC drama starring Jung EunJi, Lee JungEun and Choi JinHyuk. Since we have decided to abandon this nonsensical show, we will instead be starting "Lovely Runner" (선재 업고 튀어), starring Byeon WooSeok and Kim HyeYoon. Digressions: 1:09 - Listener E-mails! 10:29 - Linda has started "Lovely Runner" (선재 업고 튀어) and is now hooked! 12:34 - Judy watched "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in the theatres and enjoyed it very much. 15:40 - We've misled you! "Road to Avonlea" is not all free on GazeboTV after all, sadly. There are still some free episodes, so you can still check those out! 16:47 - Judy finally finished watching "Fallout" on Amazon Prime, starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins and Aaron Moten. It was a stylish adaptation of a beloved video game series, and you should check it out. Apparently Judy is on an apocalypse kick. 20:21 - Judy and Linda finished watching the third season of "Bridgerton" and it was predictably boring. Who cares anymore about this conflict, you guys. 23:57 - Judy picked up Sophie Kinsella's "The Burnout" on a whim in a physical bookstore! Even if you're not a fan of the "Confessions of a Shopaholic" series, this is a nice light read. Here's Kate. Jenny Wheeler: Hello there, Kate, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Kate O'Keeffe: Hi, Jenny. It's fantastic to be here. Thanks for inviting me. Jenny Wheeler: We're thrilled to have you on this Valentine's Week, and as I've mentioned in the intro, you do live in New Zealand in Hawkes Bay in a beautiful area, but you write international bestsellers set in many other parts of the world. Tell us how you got into this right at the beginning. Kate O'Keeffe: Got into writing you mean?. Jenny Wheeler: Yes, the writing. Kate O'Keeffe: Well, I have always been a voracious reader, and I imagine most writers will say that ever since I was a little girl. I grew up in a family with a father who was a business professor and published many books 20 plus books. So I was always around the possibility that I could do it. Of course, what I write is extraordinarily different from business books,., the other end of the spectrum as it were. I'd studied literature at university and I was a bit of a literary snob. In fact, I wouldn't read anything that wasn't a prize winner or a literary classic. and then one day a friend of mine handed me Bridget Jones' Diary and I read that and absolutely loved it. 'Gosh' I can read for enjoyment! And I had this epiphany where I thought, gosh, I can read for enjoyment instead of just bettering myself and reading the classics to make sure I've read all the classics.
We learned a new genre, work fiction, and so now here we are. This episode the characters in our books have a job that is carrying the story, or at least as a very centralized part in the plot. Kristia's main character works in Hell, literally. The coffee machine is always broken, and none of first five pens you try will work. While Rachael's character is a high powered lawyer who snaps a bit and takes a job as a maid. The only issue here is she doesn't know how to clean, or cook, or any of the basic skills one would need to work as a maid. Disclaimer: You may want to plug in your earphones for this one–it's a bit spicy. In our second episode, Emma and Monica attempt to defrost the long, cold nights of winter with a conversation about sex in fiction. After a spirited game of two truths and a lie, we discuss our bedside reads of the year, from Sally Rooney's new take on steamy millennial malaise in Beautiful World, Where Are You to Tia Williams's Seven Nights in June, by way of Bridget Jones, Anne Boleyn, Jane Eyre, Jilly Cooper, Emma's mom Colleen Flood, and more (see notes below). We talk about how books that *go there* have enlightened and entertained us over the years, read out some passages we love, and argue in favour of reading across the brows.Thank you for listening!
