From Scott LaMar, co-host of The Spark. After 32 years at WITF I'm retiring at the end of this week. On The Spark Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we're airing several of my most memorable conversation. Tuesday, we go back to September of 2019 when Sue Klebold appeared on the program. On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill twelve students and a teacher and wound twenty-four others before taking their own lives. Since then, Sue Klebold, Dylan's mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong? Were there subtle signs she had missed? What, if anything, could she have done differently? Sue Klebold wrote a book -- A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy, in which she talks about Dylan's seemingly normal childhood, the day of the Columbine shooting and the years afterwards when she grieved and struggled to understand her son and what's she's learned about mental health or brain health as she refers to it. Mother and author Sue Kebold appears on this special edition of The Spark.  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th study session on Lionel Dahmer's A Father's Story. Gus was quite resistant to reading this book. However, this moment provides a singular opportunity for counter-racist literary scholars. We just concluded our read of Sue Klebold's memoir and an in depth examination of the 1999 Columbine tragedy. The two cowardly, Racist perpetrators of that massacre were infatuated with serial killers and Jeffrey Dahmer specifically. They did a school project on the Wisconsin cannibal. Since we just heard Mrs. Klebold deflect blame and lie for she and her murdering son, Gus thought it would be a great brain exercise to see if Jeffrey Dahmer's pops behaves in a similar manner. Astute readers are asked to compare and contrast these two White memoirs with extreme care. Incidentally, the astronomically successful Netflix series debuted on September 21st of 2022. And just weeks ago, Fox Nation debuted the series: My Son Jeffrey. Gus said last year that it's important that this series of bloodletting was/is being released in sync with the autumn equinox and the coming "halloween" holiday. Last week Lionel paused to deliver a measured retort to charges that his serial killing son is a Racist. He acknowledged that the bulk of Dahmer's victims were black males, but says Jeff just wanted male bodies. Racial classification was irrelevant. It just happened to be that lots of black dudes are poor, vulnerable, and willing to accept the meager cash payouts Jeff used to lure victims. Listeners and Gus found it stunning that Lionel casually accepts that his son is a cannibal, child molesting (raping), alcoholic, serial killer. But admitting that Jeff is a Racist is a bridge too far. Lionel continues to emphasizes his own "dark" tendencies and inner thoughts - even admitting that he too pondered killing some folks. #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Ol' Jeff began killing sexually vulnerable non-white males in his grandma's basement. Grandma Dahmer apparently saw a victim stagger away from the property, but Jeff concocted a lie to lower her suspicion. Grandma wised up and raised concerns after she found Jeff's pistol. His dad confronted Jeff and found his peculiar wooden box. Lionel and Jeffrey nearly have a physical confrontation after Jeffrey refuses to reveal the contents. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 9th and final study session on Sue Klebold's A Mothers' Reckoning. Published nearly 20 years after the notorious 1999 Columbine High School massacre, where 13 people were killed, Mrs. Klebold is the White mother of Dylan Klebold - one of the cowardly White killers. After spending years in silence, Klebold stepped center stage to share her anguish over losing her child and her perspective on her child's attempt to slaughter hundreds of his classmates while disintegrating the high school. Colorado Public Radio reports the book has generated over $400,000 for numerous mental health groups. They have no evidence of direct payments to Mrs. Klebold. Last week, Sue told us about how much support and comfort she received from the White survivors of suicide loss. Deceptive Sue says she feared someone would spit in her face seeing her seated at a conference on suicide. This never happened. In fact, the White love and sympathy was so strong, Sue left her old, decrepit husband Tom fall by the wayside. She recounted a story of the family trip to visit the University of Arizona. "Dyl" flipped out when they stopped at a restaurant. Sue said he demanded they leave immediately because a group of kids were prepping to bully him. There was no evidence they were aware of Dylan's existence. Sue also shared the most important line of the book, where she outlines the difference between her hyper-White Denver suburb. "This wasn't the drug-riddled inner city, or some supposedly godless corridor like New York or Los Angeles. People who lived in Littleton were upstanding citizens with nice suburban houses and happy, healthy, well-fed children. We expected our schools to be safe." #AnneFrank #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Last week, finally got to Dylan's 1999 essay on a six foot tall White man in a trench coat who slaughters a group of people. Klebold claims she never saw the paper and the informal conference with English teacher Judith Kelly was warm and offered no hint of grave concern. Kelly wrote an open letter in 2019 saying Klebold has lied about their meeting for years. She accuses Klebold of making false claims that they discussed the treachery of Eric Harris and Dylan's inappropriate chuckles in class. In fact, Klebold says that Dylan's calculus teacher stressed that Dylan is a respectful pupil who snoozes in class from time to time and struggles with motivation. These chats were about 30 days before the massacre. In fact, Sue says in the months leading up the attempted bombing, Dylan became hostile and combative. She describe pushing him against the fridge after he forgets about her "mother's day gift." He tells her abruptly that he cannot control his temper and things could get medieval if she didn't back off. #PersonalResponsibility #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

Last week, Sue began detailing Dylan's turbulent junior year at Columbine. He and Eric were arrested, and Sue suggests they took the episode seriously. They allegedly reduced the boys contact with each other for a period after chatting with the Harrises. Sue even makes time to address the diversion form where it states that her older son Byron was booted from the house for narcotics. In the memoir she says this was a mutually agreed upon decision without rancor. She continues to heap all the blame on Eric - following the trend of labeling him a psychopath, while insisting Dylan was a sad victim of peer pressure and bullying. Sue mentions the Regina Huerter report on the culture of Columbine High School, but skillfully omits the line about students thinking Dylan and Eric were "mean and rude." #Sparky #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th study session on Sue Klebold's A Mothers' Reckoning. Published nearly 20 years after the notorious 1999 Columbine High School massacre, where 13 people were killed, Mrs. Klebold is the White mother of Dylan Klebold - one of the cowardly White killers. After spending years in silence, Klebold stepped center stage to share her anguish over losing her child and her perspective on her cowardly offspring's attempt to slaughter hundreds of his classmates while disintegrating the high school. Colorado Public Radio reports the book has generated over $400,000 for numerous mental health groups. They have no evidence of payments to Mrs. Klebold. Last week, Klebold provides a brief glimpse of the horror of "the basement tapes," where her son and the other killer make it plain that this was a meticulously planned bombing. In a deft move of deception, "Mother Superior" pivoted from the hours of footage explaining the motivations and goals for the slaughter. She spends more time talking about why many White "experts" agree that showing the footage would inspire "copy cats" and admiration for the gunmen. Which happened anyway. Mama Klebold also confessed to being angry with the creator about her son's attempt to slaughter hundreds of his classmates. Klebold includes that she received quite a bit of fan mail from "Columbiners" who sanctified Dylan and whined about being bullied themselves. Listeners and Gus found this odd since Klebold told us her mail was being vetted for unseemly commentary. Fanboy/Fangirl love letters aren't verboten? Ms. Klebold also told a number of enormous lies. She said she didn't know anything about Dylan's underage drinking and she says Eric made no comment about how the massacre would impact his parents. Dylan, affectionately known as "VoDKa," confesses to alcohol consumption during the diversion program for his felony arrest. Eric laments how his actions will destroy his parents on the restricted "basement tapes." Dave Cullen talks about this part of the footage in the book we just read. #Wholesome #Charades #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

After spending years in silence, Klebold stepped center stage to share her anguish over losing her child and her perspective on her Dylan's attempt to slaughter hundreds of his classmates while disintegrating the high school. Colorado Public Radio reports the book has generated over $400,000 for numerous mental health groups. They have no evidence of payments to Mrs. Klebold. Last week Sue continued her "pity party" and White Victimhood by invoking metaphors suggesting she was a slave. In one example, she says being renown as the mother of the Columbine killer was "like a cattle brand." Ms. Klebold confesses that she relied on "black [negro] humor" to survive the early days of grief. She repeatedly insists that she was threatened, hated, and the target of bullying and alienation after the failed bombing, but there is no evidence to support this. To the contrary, she herself and numerous other sources detail relatively widespread support and sympathy for the Klebolds. "Dyl's" mom loses some of the facade when she details the police report near the end of 1999, where Jefferson County Sheriff's Office gives a macabre account of Rebel and VoDKa's long, methodical plan to eviscerate the school. Ol' Sue had been lying to (and us) about her offspring's role as a mass-school shooter and wannabee bomber. Suspected Racist Sue Klebold's view of sweet, innocent, blond Dylan was shattered even before viewing the "basement tapes." #MasterDeceiver #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

Denver Public Radio reports the book has generated over $400,000 for numerous mental health groups. They have no evidence of payments to Mrs. Klebold. Last week Klebold emphasized the slum existence Dylan endured in Littleton. They purchased a rat infested house with a leaky pool, cracked tennis courts, broken windows and raccoons aplenty. Sue emphasizes the ramshackle, hand-me-down nature of their existence: Dylan's rusty, $400 BMW that barely ran, and the equally rusty, castoff bicycles a neighbor gave them en route to the landfill. Gus assumes the rental properties she and Tom owned before Dylan's failed bombing were probably vermin-infested and downtrodden too. Interestingly, Sue discloses that Tom was not interested in penning an apology to the families of those killed by their child. Tom allegedly refused to accept any culpability for this massacre. Sue did pursue writing the letters. However, she viewed Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold as "victims" in this event as well. The chat bots will gladly tell you this is illogical rubbish: perpetrators can't be victims of their own homicidal mayhem. Sue and Tom are not "victims" in this tragedy either. #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Lame ol' Sue thought we forgot that on the day of the Columbine attack, her homicidal White urchin wore a t-shirt emblazoned with the word: "WRATH." Sue even told on herself accidentally, saying that the one school picture of her child media outlets projected to the world portrayed Dylan as some loser dude you'd avoid if possible. She gave us even more details about the whole city - if not the state - looking out for the well being, and protecting them from the paparazzi. She even made time to tell inform us that she was raised Jewish, which disqualifies Dylan (and the Klebold klan en total) from being Racist. #MotherSuperior #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jeff Kass. A reporter for the now-defunct Rocky Mountain News, Kass is a renowned journalist who was on the scene April 20th, 1999 for the Columbine Massacre. He investigated and reported on this massacre for a decade and compiled his research into the 2009 publication: Columbine: A True Crime Story. Mr. Kass missed out on viewing the Basement Tapes, but did file a number of Freedom of Information requests to get a better understanding of why 13 people were killed by two White teens. We'll discuss how this failed bombing is connected to the other White bombers of the decade and the pattern of “White Victimhood” connecting the killers. We'll also discuss the infamous Sue Klebold - mother of one of the killers, and the corruption of the Jefferson County Sheriffs's Office before and after April 20, 1999. We also detail the Racist abuse that Shoels family faced after their son Isaiah was killed. Mr. Kass spent time with the family and documented their response to the massacre. We even asked Mr. Kass about Rev. If you got the chance to interview the host of one of your favorite podcasts, what questions would you ask them? On this past Season, Season 3, I got that chance. Kimi Culp, the host of the podcast All the Wiser, was a guest on my show. On All the Wiser, Kimi interviews people with remarkable stories. Stories about the darkest moments of their life.  What brought them there? How did they get through it? And what wisdom did they gain from that experience? There were a lot of things I wanted to ask Kimi, but the first question that popped into my head was about one guest in particular. This guest was Sue Klebold. Sue Klebold is the mother of Dylan Klebold, one of the perpetrators of the mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. The mass shooting at Columbine wasn't the first mass shooting at a high school, but for some reason it became the most iconic and felt like the beginning of the ongoing wave of school shootings we've seen in the United States. I asked Kimi about inviting the mother of one of the most notorious mass shooters on her show.  Why did she choose her? Was she nervous about how this choice would be interpreted by her listeners? Kimi's answer to me was incredibly moving and, if you haven't heard my episode from Season 3 with Kimi, I invite you to go back and listen to it. Thanks to Kimi's courage in this choice of guest, I would say that my heart grew just a bit more. First, when I listened to Kimi's interview of Sue Klebold. And second, when Kimi told me why she interviewed her.As a bonus episode between seasons, I'm sharing Kimi Culp's interview with Sue Klebold from her podcast All the Wiser.

Today, I'm joined by Kimi Culp, founder and host of All the Wiser, a podcast that explores nonfiction storytelling through conversation. On her show, Kimi gives people from all walks of life the chance to tell their story in a way that maybe they've never had a chance to do before. We discuss Kimi's deeply empathetic approach, what inspired her to illuminate people's lived experiences, and reimagine what it looks like to heal in community. To kick off our conversation, I asked Kimi how being bipolar and sharing that she lives with that condition informs her show. She explains why she decided to share that part of her life with her audience and describes the incredible ripple effect that it's had on her community. She also illustrates how she supports herself as a deeply emotional person, which can be challenging given the content of her show. Kimi shares how some of her potentially controversial episodes, like Sue Klebold's and Amanda Knox's, came to be. She talks about what draws her into people's stories and how she goes about finding guests for the show. Kimi and I touch on how podcasting and really hearing someone's story from their perspective has the potential to heal us as individuals and a society. She also highlights how she sees the show progressing and the decision to donate $2,000 to a charity that is near and dear to each storyteller's heart. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Castbox, or on your favorite podcast platform.Topics Covered:●      How Kimi started to come to terms with her bipolar diagnosis ●      Where Kimi's deep sense of empathy comes from ●      Honoring what it's like to live the full human experience ●      The intimate nature of podcasting for both the content creators and listeners ●      Kimi's dedication to ethical storytelling Guest Info:●      All The Wiser Podcast ●      All The Wiser Website ●      All The Wiser Instagram Follow Me:●      My LinkedIn●      Art Heals All Wounds Website●      Art Heals All Wounds Instagram●      Art Heals All Wounds Twitter ●      Art Heals All Wounds Facebook●      Art Heals All Wounds Newsletter

Sue reveals how Dylan had no mental illness diagnosis, and no one knew about the dark depression he wrote in personal journals. Eventually, his suicidal thoughts turned homicidal, and his friendship with fellow shooter Eric Harris developed into extreme rage amongst the two which led to that unforgettable tragedy in 1999. We discuss how she has spent the last fifteen years excavating every detail of her family life and trying to understand the crucial intersection between mental health problems and violence, what she feels she missed in Dylan's mental state, the idea of forgiveness, and the urgent need to change how society responds to psychological disorders in order to prevent future tragedies. *Rebroadcast* (originally aired 9/3/21)After the mass murder at Robb Elementary school in Texas yesterday, we're re-airing our Sue Klebold episode. In All The Wiser, we use human stories to challenge us to think differently about the world, and to learn about different perspectives, voices, and messages. In order to prevent mass shootings, it is imperative to understand all the factors that lead to them. This fall, I had the privilege of talking to two moms who lost their sons in very different ways to school shootings. One of them was Sue Klebold, mother of Dylan Klebold, one of Columbine's two shooters. The second was Scarlett Lewis, the mother of Jesse Lewis, who was killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook. Both women loved their sons and dedicated their lives to ending mass shootings. It is my hope that today in re-airing Sue's episode and encouraging you to also listen to Scarlett's story, we can think deeply about how little boys grow up to become young men who commit mass murders. Let's learn from them so we can all decide what role we will play in ending the heartbreak in our country.Subscribe to All The Wiser wherever you listen to podcasts - we're on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and more! “Simply put; unconditional love, ‘I love you regardless, I love you no matter what, I'll always be here for you’.  My eldest son went to hell and back from his early to late teens, and as a result acted out extraordinarily; he was extremely aggressive, and intensely angry around the clock, disruptive, destructive, and to be honest I was terrified more than once – even to the point of calling the police twice.  They were very dark days, throughout I kept reassuring him how much I loved him and that I would never give up on him. Many many people told me how stupid I was, but I understood his actions came from a place of pain, and I couldn't add to it.  Step forward just a few short years, I have the most incredible, loving, supportive, and upstanding son that any mother could wish for. He is truly wonderful, we laugh until we cry, we share a very close bond.  Never give up on your children.”   Lisa refers to the legend of Tam Lin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tam_Lin  Lisa also refers to Sue Klebold’s book ‘A Mother’s Reckoning: Living in the aftermath of the Columbine tragedy’: https://books.google.ie/books/about/A_Mother_s_Reckoning.html?id=TEzDCgAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false Stella tries to, but can quite remember, the names of Nancy Tucker’s books: ‘The Time in Between: A memoir into hunger and hope’ and ‘That Was When People Started to Worry: Windows into Unwell Minds’  https://books.google.ie/books/about/That_Was_When_People_Started_to_Worry.html?id=86dIDwAAQBAJ&redir_esc=y https://books.google.ie/books?id=EXa3BgAAQBAJ&source=gbs_similarbooks

On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill twelve students and a teacher and wound twenty-four others before taking their own lives. For the last sixteen years, Sue Klebold, Dylan’s mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong? Were there subtle signs she had missed? What, if anything, could she have done differently? These are questions that Klebold has grappled with every day since the Columbine tragedy. In A Mother’s Reckoning, she chronicles with unflinching honesty her journey as a mother trying to come to terms with the incomprehensible. In the hope that the insights and understanding she has gained may help other families recognize when a child is in distress, she tells her story in full, drawing upon her personal journals, the videos and writings that Dylan left behind, and on countless interviews with mental health experts.Filled with hard-won wisdom and compassion, A Mother’s Reckoning is a powerful and haunting book that sheds light on one of the most pressing issues of our time. And with fresh wounds from the recent Newtown and Charleston shootings, never has the need for understanding been more urgent. give it a'listen Mentioned Links Here's the ABC Interview Friend of Mine by Jonathan and Stephen Cohen, survivors of the Columbine shootingFor more info on the Columbine massacre, here's a website where Dave Cullen, author of Columbine, compiled his research. While only 2% of suicides are murder-suicides, the narrative of this tragedy dominates public consciousness. Due to the fact that the circumstances are horrific, and the media reports on these stories more frequently and with more details than most other community tragedies, it’s not surprising that we feel overwhelmed. What is often not discussed is the unimaginable grief and trauma left behind in the families of the perpetrators. In my interview with Sue Klebold, mother of Columbine shooter Dylan Klebold, we learn more about why she spent many years in hiding and what she is doing now so that other families don’t have to experience what hers did. It was not the first school shooting in the U.S. , but it grabbed the public’s focus and reverberates still: Twenty years ago this week, two seniors at Columbine High School in Colorado killed 12 fellow students and a teacher, wounded others … and turned the guns on themselves. The tragedy changed school security protocols and attitudes toward mental health … but similar scenes have played out since. The mother of one of the shooters, Sue Klebold, still wonders what she had missed … and has since tirelessly advocated for mental health awareness.

Today we discuss a topic that many families are dealing with quietly, quietly... 72,000 Americans died from drug overdose last year. That’s a two-fold increase in a decade. I’m sure you’ve heard similar stats like this in the news, along with headlines including words such as “opioid crisis” + “heroine epidemic.” Today, my friend Steve Grant joins us to share his story, how this epidemic has deeply touched his life + what it means for you on your journey to live inspired. SHOW NOTES: Learn more about Chris + Kelly's Hope here. Read the original essay I wrote when I first met Steve here. "I have grief, but I don't have guilt. I did everything I could. If I could re-do something, I'd send him to a 12 - 16 month rehab program. He needed to be rewired." What tips would Steve give to parents? When friends come: No back packs upstairs + doors open It's important for kids to have some after-school activities Always call if they are staying somewhere Take the liquor out of your house "Most important, keep open lines of communication, you have to be willing to talk about sensitive issues. Always have an interest in where your kids are, what they are doing and who they are doing it with." Enjoy thinking about a current topic through an inspired lens?Check out episode 73 with Sue Klebold, mother of Columbine High School shooter Dylan Klebold + mental health advocate. Listen to Sue's inspired take on what we can do in the wake of growing gun violence here.  STEVE GRANT'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? John Grisham's book, A Time to Kill. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I was a risk taker. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Mickey Mantle. I'd ask about how he was so talented + ended up being an alcoholic / abusing his body so much. I think his answer would be about a lot of things we talked about today. Something controlled him that he couldn't gain control over. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? It's not always as it seems. 6. What would you tell your 20-year-old self? In this episode, we talk to Sue Klebold about how she would give her own life to stop her son Dylan's mass shooting at Columbine High School. Not long after, he was arrested. In this episode, we see how chronic bullying can change the adolescent brain and, along with other significant factors, can lead to violence. Also, we hear from Sue Klebold, mother of one of the Columbine High School shooters.

"This process of accepting that your loved one has hurt other people. And accepting who that is and what it means to be a mother of someone like that, it takes not only months but years." Sue Klebold is forever tied to a tragic day marked down in American history, April 20, 1999. It was on that day two gunmen entered Columbine High School and killed 12 students, a teacher and wounded two dozen others. One of the shooters was her son, Dylan. After an excruciating journey, Sue has come to a place of peace and is using her life to honor the lives of those who died, raise awareness for mental health issues and do what she could to prevent another tragedy like Columbine from happening again. Sue shares her story of a mother's love, heart-wrenching tragedy, sincere appeal for forgiveness, the long process of allowing herself to grieve, and letting go of the trauma of being hated, criticized and judged in order to focus on her heart, and the little boy she lost and adored.  Today Sue bravely, honestly and with great humility shares her 20-year journey of researching mental health, suicide, and their ramifications so that we as a community may be able to live more inspired. I think what will amaze you most is how much you can relate to Sue, her family and her story. Sue shares concrete ideas to make sure none of us have to step into her shoes. It is a podcast you won't want to miss. SHOW NOTES:  Sue heard on the news that 25 had died and found herself praying that no more would die and if her son was the killer that he'd kill himself to stop the number of fatalities from growing. "I didn't think of him as a vicious murderer." "I went into the meeting with the sheriff thinking he'd been brainwashed or tricked. But I was shown what really happened and his level of involvement in the planning that I was in a state of shock all over again. I had to rebuild who Dylan was to me." We were very isolated after the tragedy, I had a tremendous amount of humiliation to think that someone I loved and raised could do something like this. There was a lot of fear involved.  "Everybody who knew Dylan was as dumbfounded as we were. All wondering what we could have said to change his involvement...trying to understand what Dylan had done, look out for each other." I remember Dylan with joy. Like if he died of cancer or a car accident.  I thought I'd never get to this place. I thought the way in which he died would obliterate what he had meant to me. Every time I saw kids with their moms and kids with their siblings I thought Dylan took that from people. I tried to make statements, write letters to the victims..."There is nothing you can do to adequately apologize for something like that." Read paralyzed Columbine survivor, Anne Marie Hochhalter's letter of forgiveness to Sue.   "I had perceived myself to be a good mother." "Previously, I had been one of those mothers who when crimes were being committed, went "uh-huh, what kinda parent was that." People had to think of me as a bad parent or different than them because "The thought that you could do your best and be a good parent and this could still happen is a terrifying thought." "I had no idea during his lifetime that he was in danger and that's why I speak about this a lot today. Now I look back - after being educated, reading, talking with experts - I can say that was a potential sign. But I didn't have the knowledge at the time." School counselors, therapist, teachers and his parents all missed potential signs. He said he'd show us that he was on the right track and he did. He worked, applied to college and did well for the next 14 months. Change in behavior happened his junior year. Changes in his sleep patterns. But he presented as a normal person.   "The thought that you could do your best and be a good parent and this could still happen is terrifying."  "Important point to remember about mental health: What we think people should be feeling and what they are feeling can be very, very different." We need to do everything we can to truly understand what our children are going through. Ask open-ended questions (even though you can't be certain they'll answer truthfully): "Tell me something about yourself that no one understands, but that causes you pain?" Instead of trying to fix it, making your child feel like he has to "be happy" ... no matter their answer, your response should always be, "tell me more about that." Ask the hard questions: Do you have thoughts about hurting yourself or someone else? Stay calm, don't try to argue with that person. I wish I'd given more of an opportunity to share more of what he was dealing with and that whatever his feelings were okay. If I could do anything over, those are the things I would make happen. Sue's book is a meditation on forgiveness A Mother's Reckoning.  There is a physiological difference in those who commit suicide; when someone is having persistent thoughts of suicide and can't shut it off - these are symptoms of a physiological brain malfunction. [Dr. Victoria Arango, Ph.D. from Columbia University]  According to the FBI, of mass shootings, 78% of them the shooter was suicidal. This is why I have become so focused on suicide prevention. If we can get someone away from a suicidal crisis, it gives us great opportunity to prevent a shooting like this from escalating. "I practice gratitude a lot." I go to bed at night counting blessings to adjust my mind into a positive place. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do with it? Well, I think I'd sit on it for a while. I don't think there is anything different that I would do from what I am doing. I try to live a life where I have donated what I can donate from my book. I would want to make sure that money was used well. I am so happy with how my life is.  3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I think I would grab pictures of my children. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Dylan.  5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? It was in the process of my therapy, where I was allowed to grieve.  6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? You are in for a wild ride. Nothing you can do is going to prepare yourself. You are more courageous and strong than you have any idea. 7. Sue Klebold is the mother of Dylan Klebold, one of the two shooters at Columbine High School who, in 1999, killed twelve students and a teacher, and wounded more than 20 others before taking their own lives. In our conversation with we explore how current day mass tragedies continue to affect her. We also look at how tragedies like Columbine occur - and how someone's thinking can become suicidal and homicidal. Before publishing her book, A Mother’s Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy, Sue spent 15 years excavating every detail of her family life, and trying to understand the crucial intersection between mental health problems and violence. Instead of becoming paralyzed by her grief and remorse, she worked to advance mental health awareness. Sue is donating all author’s profits from her book to organizations that promote brain health and prevent suicide. The mom of one of the Columbine shooters, Sue Klebold, could have gone into hiding after the tragedy. She didn’t. She decided that the need to speak out on the importance of mental health was more important than her fears of how the world would treat her. She wanted to prevent these tragedies from happening and believes being aware of the hurt our loved ones are facing is the key. Austin went through an incredible amount of depression and anger starting in middle school. He systematically began numbing his emotions until all he could feel was his anger. When his girlfriend rejected him because he couldn’t feel love, he had to overcome his fear of emotions and face them. “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than our fear” – Theodore Roosevelt

Most people think of the attack on Columbine High School in 1999 as a school shooting. Sue Klebold thinks of it as her son Dylan's murder-suicide. She's written a new book and says she hopes the insight it provides outweighs the risk of re-traumatizing victims' families. Klebold answers a question she's faced for years: How could her son have planned the attack without her knowing? And she says she'll never know if she could have prevented her son's actions, but she does wish she could've done some things differently.
