Welcome to the latest Photopocene conversation with me, your host, Josie Purcell. This time, I'm joined by an upcoming visual artist from North Devon, George Rayner. Graduating in 2021, and receiving an award from Format Festival for his final degree show work, I love the fact that George came to photography on a "whim". We chat about his love for black and white photography, keeping cool in his (well ventilated) darkroom, what nature and the natural world mean to him, and, of course, his photo projects seeking to highlight environmental matters which need us to act now to divert long term ecological damage. With an element of humour in some of his work, we chat about how that can draw someone in, and we talk about his connection to his coastal surroundings along with his collaborations with a musician and a textile artist, and his latest show. Listen in or find out more at https://www.georgeraynerfilm.com/ You can follow George on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/george__rayner/ And see his exhibit with Studio Kind at https://www.studiokind.org.uk/george-rayner-virtual-tour and in the Ephemeris publication at https://tourdemoon.com/sites/default/files/2022-03/TDM%20Issue%206_17_03_22_0_0.pdf And more links here: Solo Exhibition: https://www.studiokind.org.uk/george-rayner-transient-tales August Group Show: https://www.studiokind.org.uk/unstable-ground Music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsR68KXNY_E&t=1s Article on music video and new EP: https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2022/07/video-stevieray-latham-fugitive/?fbclid=IwAR2vcQ6wi-gZkUsmXsuPR4qR5WyQ-zRax60njYTh70jjKm_LK1UbxDe0BUo If you would like to share your eco-conscious photography story on Photopocene, simply contact me via https://www.josiepurcellphotography.com/contact or DM via Insta https://www.instagram.com/josieshutterpod/

Why didn't my mother marry until she was much older than her peers? This week I am (again) using a technique from Rose Murray's fab book When Will You Marry I am using my mother's chart as she didn't meet my Dad until she was 30, and she didn't marry until she was 32 years old. Why wasn't she even interested in marriage until that age? Mum's natal chart Gemini Asc = Ruler is Mercury Descendant/7th house in the sign of Sagittarius = Ruler is Jupiter Ephemeris for 1921 Get yours here https://www.astro.com/swisseph/swepha_e.htm? I've noted that Mercury is her Asc ruler and Jupiter is her 7th house ruler Mercury is in Pisces and Jupiter is retro in Virgo (opposite signs) I've underlined my mother's date of birth and counted on from that date in blocks of 10 ONE DAY FOR EVERY YEAR OF LIFE As you will see Mercury goes retrograde on the 22nd Feb 1921 On Wednesday 16th March, Mercury comes out of retrograde. By age 30 (which I've underlined) Mercury is 3 degrees 36 Pisces and Jupiter is 12 degrees 19 Virgo When she gets to 32 days after birth, in secondary progressions = age 32 Mercury is now 4 degrees 6 Pisces and Jupiter has retro/ed all the way back to 12 degrees 5 Virgo which means they're exactly (within 8 degrees orb) in opposition!!

I know I did!Long time listeners may remember Episode 79, where I talked a little about Dianne as part of a larger interview with Gareth Powell. Fans of either writer will want to grab that episode as well because this couple is one of the greatest things going on in sci-fi right now. Both appeared on panels at the Cymera Festival in the UK.I enjoyed this conversation so much, as we delved into a lot about Galla-Deia, the humanoid protector of our species born from a gemstone and raised by a sentient robot. Dianne's series is part Star Wars, part GoT, and we discovered, as we talked, that it's also part Foundation series and My Fair Lady as well. It's just really good, and Galla-Deia's character is a big part of that. The series is four books long, but the one that we focus most of our discussion on is book two, Ephemeris, which actually serves as both a prequel and sequel to Heliopause, book one. Get a hold of both of them at Mysterious Galaxy, my indie store of choice, and the place where I first met Dianne. Once you've finished Ephemeris, you can go over to Dianne's blog and see some artwork about Galla-Deia.You can learn more about Dianne's work at her website HERE. She can also be found on Twitter also. In fact, you can get a hold of her on just about every social media site. Just look for the links on her website. Finally, Dianne also interviews authors. Go to her YouTube page to learn more!Like the podcast episode? You can support the show by buying me a coffee or becoming a patron! Today we're learning from Daniela Vianna, the founder behind Ephemeris. Ephemeris is the startup merging technology and astrology to deliver tangible and digital products designed to help people navigate the magical adventure of understanding themselves, the cosmos, and the connection therein. And this conversation is so interesting! One thing I didn't know that astrology was in an actual grey area for investors and also when it comes to things like Facebook ads. We're talking through her journey navigating this industry that she's so deeply passionate about, how she made the move from Australia to the UUS - and exactly how much it cost to do it.And a big thank you to everyone who's been sharing posts of the podcast on Instagram stories - you are the best best best and I'm so grateful to you. ** ENGLISH ** New year, new season. Connoisseurs, listeners of psytrance sound, trance freaks, fairies of positive vibrations and titans of the rave movement, I am proud and happy to present you a new round of history within the framework of the ULTIMATE VITALITY project For a long time, my collection of PSYTRANCE music included tracks that I couldn't play in my performances. My style, under which I have been performing for about 20 years, is expressed by more intense, explosive and mainstream tracks with a bias in FULL ON style. But atmospheric compositions or tracks with rhythmic and immersive psychedelic energy are undeservedly postponed for later due to infrequent performances in this particular genre of TRANCE music The dream of creating a PSYTRANCE podcast I have been hatching for the last 10 years, but the idea has finally formed just now. Ultimate Vitality is my new podcast dedicated exclusively to UK FULL ON and PSYCHEDELIC music developing in 2 parts. One after the other a podcasts will be released with the morning sound (Morning Mantra), followed by a podcasts inherent in a more nocturnal time (Midnight Mantra) [ ** RUSSIAN ** Новый год – новый сезон. I'm back! (hopefully!)Skeinenable Ep 111 : Skein Enable Podcast : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet ArchiveWarning: links below are almost all Ravelry links. What I've Finished:Jill made the Cadwyn Bloomers by Kelly Menzies in a mustard Koigu color for her coworker's baby. Her Rav page here. She made almost all of the Farm Friends (Pasture Pals, Pen Pals, Fowl Friends) by Esther Braithwaite, the cow, sheep, chicken, pig and horse, out of leftover fingering weight yarns. Link to one of Jill's Rav pages here. She made another, and hopefully her last Purl Soho Garter Stitch Earflap Hat in the child size in Leading Men Fiber Arts Box Office in the Neon Pencil colorway, and a tiny bit of Gnarled Paw DK yarn in Pinky. She also made two different Love Owls by Susan B. Anderson, one in the large size for a friend's two-year-old, and one with the large size decorations, but in the smaller size for Starling. She used Madelinetosh Tosh Merino in the Paper colorway with accents of Bumblebirch Forage in Cranberry and Anzula Cricket DK in Toffee. Jill also finished a cropped pullover, Tin Roof by yamagara using Madelinetosh Merino Light in Grasshopper, Nassau Blue and Robin's Egg. Her Rav page here. Photos coming soon!My Current Fix:Jill is working on a pair of stockinette socks in Opal 4-ply in the cake pops colorway. She first did most of a leg with 60 stitches but had to rip it back and switch to 68 stitches. She is doing a secret test knit for Sara Elizabeth Kellner for an upcoming Rabbit Hole Knits book. She's using Paton's Classic Wool in Khaki and handspun yarn from fiber from Morro Fleece Works. Jill has started Ephemeris by Debra Gerhard out of Teal Torch Knits Sock in Good Til the Last Drop and Long Dog Yarn Bounce Sock in First Blush. She's hoping this mosaic shawl will work with these two colors. She first tried the yarns with Cathedral Grove by Romi Hill, but it wasn't a good yarn match. What I'm Jonesing For:Jill is looking at shawls as always. She's into Stella by Natalia Moreva, which is a semi-circular shawl with modular knit stars. She also likes the intarsia crescent shawl Number 10 by Lori Versaci, and Lilies by Andree Beddoe which using her "knitted embroidery" technique. Jill likes the colorwork Amor Propio Hat by Carolina Castillo. The Secondary Progressions it is a Symbolic time tool, that I liken to a genetic coded script. The aspects formed and sign changes or motion changes will happen regardless of whether there is an opportunity or conditions in real time to support the unfolding. Tools besides Astrology Software will be the Ephemeris “the bible before computers” which can give you a quick guide to Secondary Progressions. Jill and I will demo this technique today. Bradley and Jocelyn jettison to the future with scientist and science fiction author J. Dianne Dotson. Here the friends discuss her early career in life sciences. They then teleport to her current career as a science writer and author, discussing her series science fiction novels called The Questrison Saga®. They talk about not only alien planets, spaceports, and future technology but also that which connects us to being human, even non-human creatures, like family, love, space fashion, and, most importantly, space food!!! Dotson tells them about her childhood dreaming up characters, the importance of Science and Art, and the beauty of having her characters seem so real. And together, Dianne and the friends dream big, journeying as true Questri among the many possibilities of space and imagination alike. You can find more information about J. As I'd covered the U.K chart last week, I thought I'd cover the chart for the U.S.A this week All this data is from https://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Main_Page And the chart I'm using is from here https://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Nation:_USA_No.1 Sagittarius Ascendant, Sun Cancer in the 8th, Moon Aquarius in the 3rd I've also included today's transits (this was recorded 21st Dec2019) and as you can see, Pluto has nearly returned after 243 years, it will be exact in December 2022. The similarities to Mr Trump's chart are very interesting. Leo Ascendant, Sun Gemini in the 10th, Moon Sagittarius in the 4th. Compare the USA chart USA chart 21 Sagi/Trump Moon 21Sagi, Mars Gemini/Sun Gemini, Mercury, both have it in Cancer, both have Uranus in Gemini !! Here's the Ephemeris for the Saturn/Pluto conjunction in January 2020...look along to 10th-13th Jan. https://www.astro.com/swisseph/ae/2000/ae_2020.pdf
This week I am discussing Arabic Parts: Their history and use in a chart. (Refer back to Episode 57 for discussion on the Part of Fortune.) Here is the website you can use to find your parts: http://libracentre.com/arabic_parts_chart.php You will need to start with your own chart and use your Ascendant sign and degree and the planet's signs and degrees. There is always some sort of calculation like Asc-Sun+Moon or whatever. Astro.com will only provide you with the Part of Fortune, which is extremely useful. The libra website will give you the calculation, it's your job to make sense of it and what it might mean for you. Experiment and let me know how you get on! My Part of Fortune is 29 Scorpio 22'41" ...nothing is happening with that until Nov and Dec this year. Find your Parts or Lots and use this years Ephemeris to find out what might be transiting yours. Links below piccie 2019 Ephemeris https://www.astro.com/swisseph/ae/2000/ae_2019d.pdf 2010 Ephemeris https://www.astro.com/swisseph/ae/2000/ae_2020d.pdf
My African cliche of the day is a word, the word controversy, which comes up very often, too often, when it comes to African history, on the pretext that it has been transmitted by oral tradition. This often disqualifies whole sections of the history of the continent. Controversy? Listen, When Francisco Pizarro in 1532 massacred Atahualpa and 20.000 Inca the 13th and last Inca emperor, to seize their gold on behalf of Spain, he is said to have needed exactly 180 men and 37 horses. Not 200 men, and not 38 or 39 horses ... Another example, stories about the life of Attila, leader of the famous Huns, nicknamed the scourge of God, died in the year 453 of a bleeding nose during his wedding night, it is certain? and better still, Alexander the Great, who is reported to have married in one go, 10,000 of these Macedonian soldiers to women of the kingdoms that he conquered , and died after seeing all his soldiers parade one by one in front of him! ! seriously, guys, everything really happened exactly like that? Are we certain? There is no controversy? It’s up to you to think about it; to reflect on your own clichés, about our African continent. See you next week, Thank you and Have good weekend !
The Manden Charter (also called the Charter of Kouroukan Foura) is a declaration of human rights with universal value that was proclaimed in 1222. It is attributed to a group of malinke hunters, that used to be a traditional and initiatory African society. It was passed on by oral tradition and transcribed by the anthropologist and historian Youssouf Tata Cissé in the 1960s. The declaration is said to have officially been proclaimed in Mali in 1236, coinciding with the accession to power of the emperor Soundiata Keita, who founded the Mali empire, and whose successor is the famous Mansa Moussa; whom we will visit in the future flights of the Sankofa bird. Neo-conservative historians, including the French Francis Simonis, have negated the charter’s authenticity. Yet, in 2009, UNESCO declared it intangible cultural heritage of humanity. My African cliché of the day is a question: an African society/people proclaimed this declaration many centuries before the acknowledgement of values that the West now defends (at least as long as there are none of their financial interests involved). How could the same people be treated as savage; primitive, uncivilized and ignorant? Is it because the declaration is too problematic in the eyes of those that want to prove intellectual and moral inferiority of Africans and their descendants that allegedly are so attached to slavery?
It is common to hear that Africa emerged from darkness thanks to colonization. So, the question for us, is “What exactly was there in Africa before the Berlin Conference covered in episode 1? To answer this question, The Sankofa, announces today a long, yet exceptional journey, over several centuries with regular stops, from ancient Sudan to medieval Zimbabwe, to visit great empires, big cities and great cultures. We will go on a diplomatic mission to visit proud and powerful stateswomen and men, such as Sayyida Al Hurra, Labotsibeni Mdluli, Fatima Soudi bint Abderremane, Taitu Betul, The Kahena, Chaka King of the Zulus, the great Mansa Musa, Sonni Ali the Great, and obviously King Behanzin!
"There was no miracle, just good economic policies". This sentence from a former minister of finance, sums up this success, which sweeps the pessimism displayed by English economist James Meade before independence, who then thought that the absence of natural resources apart from sugar, combined with a galloping population and unemployment, fueling communal tensions in an unequal society, condemned the British colony to failure. Fifty years later, another Economy Nobel Prize winner, Joseph Stiglitz, suggests to the United States to take inspiration from the miraculous fate of the island.
A family podcast to share between generations the history of Africa and its implications for the world today. We embark on short flights, in a flight in SANKOFA, which takes us according to the dates in the wonderful and powerful history of the African continent, Africans and Afro-descendants from around the world.

In this episode, we restart our march through history, which we left off a few episodes ago back in the 18th century. With our guest, Dr. Hilary Green, we dive into 19th-century American slavery and the idea that black and brown bodies are “closer to nature” than light-skinned bodies. Dr. Green talks about racism, popular ideas of biology, and how our denial of black suffering still resonates today in racial health disparities. Yosemite Podcast Show Notes Today we’re going to talk about photographing Yosemite, the national park that Ansel Adams made famous and one of my all-time favorite parks. I still remember getting goosebumps the first time I came down the hill on Big Oak Flat Road and the valley opened up before me. I’ve been back many times since, but still remember that first time. Most people only visit the valley floor which is only a very small part of the entire park, but it’s where the icons are and not to be missed. My favorite spots are Tunnel View, Valley View and Glacier Point. Pretty obvious ones I guess, but we’ll also talk about some of the lesser known spots too. The park itself is about a 4-hour drive east of San Francisco and southeast of Sacramento. I always recommend people fly into Sacramento because of all the traffic in and around San Francisco not to mention the hassle of flying into San Francisco International. If you’re driving, you have more options depending on where you’re coming from. I live in NW Nevada, so I prefer coming down Hwy 395 on the east side of the Sierra’s and going over Tioga Pass when it’s open which is usually sometime in May. But if you’re in California or the Pacific Northwest, you will want to use either the Big Oak Flat entrance in the NW part of the park on Highway 120 or the South Entrance on Highway 41. The best times of year to be there are spring and winter in my opinion. Spring for the waterfalls and wildflowers; winter for snow and clearing storms. Summer is less than ideal with lots of tourists and in most years the waterfalls are a trickle or not running at all. There is some fall color in Yosemite usually in late October and early November, but the trees do not always change color at the same time. It’s a time for intimate landscapes along the Merced River mostly. So, a typical day in the park usually starts before sunrise and ends after sunset. The best color is frequently a half hour before sunrise and up to a half hour after sunset. For sunrise, you have to be there early not only for the pre-sunrise color, but also to get the best spot or any spot at all. You definitely want to be there before the tour buses arrive. Likewise, at sunset you need to be there 45-60 minutes before official sunset to stake out your spot at Valley View, Tunnel View and Glacier Point. Sunset light hits Valley View first and then Tunnel View with Glacier Point last because of the differing altitudes. You can do Valley View and Tunnel View in one day if you don’t dilly dally too long at Valley View, but Glacier Point is at least an hour from the Valley Floor and a separate trip. The best time of day to photograph the various waterfalls like Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil Fall and Vernal Fall is mid-morning for Yosemite Falls, mid- late afternoon for Bridal Veil Fall and mid-day for Vernal and Nevada Falls. This is because Yosemite Valley sits in a deep canyon several thousand feet below the rim, so light does not strike the north rim until mid-morning and the south rim until mid-late afternoon otherwise these falls are in deep shadow. The same is true of Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall because they’re in the Merced River canyon. I usually recommend people plan to spend at least five days photographing the park to allow for a couple of sunrises and sunsets at Tunnel View and Valley View and 1-2 sunsets at Glacier Point. Plus time to drive to the Mariposa Giant Sequoia’s, Tenaya Lake and Olmsted Point. Off the beaten path spots for sunset are Olmsted Point and Tenaya Lake. There are great views all around at Olmsted Point, but my favorite is the one of Half Dome at sunset especially if there are some nice clouds to reflect the sunset light. You can shoot from the parking lot here or climb the rock on the west side or north side for a different perspective. Don’t forget to look behind you or to the east for sunset lit clouds or mountains. At the Tenaya Lake parking lot, you have to hike a hundred yards or less to the east to reach the lake front. There is a flat rock extending out into the lake which makes a good leading line for the lake and the distant mountains as well as spot to put your tripod. Night photography at Olmsted Point can be productive. You have good views to the south and west and there are Jeffrey pines for foreground material. The best time for this depends on the phase of the moon and the time of moonrise. Ideally, you want either a new moon or a quarter moon at most and shortly after moonrise time wise. If the moon is too full or in the wrong part of the sky the stars are nearly invisible. One other popular option is a moonbow over Yosemite falls which works best under a full moon in April and May. Fortunately, the best times are pre-determined every year by Donald Olson at Texas State University at www.donolson.wp.txstate.edu A new moon or quarter moon also allow for night shots of the icons from locations like Valley View or Tunnel View. My favorite lenses in Yosemite are the 24-70 and 70-200. The 24-70 for the grand landscape view. But sometimes it’s more interesting to isolate parts of the scene for a different perspective. My go to camera body for landscapes is the D4. Not a traditional landscape body, but if I want more megapixels I can shoot panoramas. I always like to recommend Michael Frye’s book “The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite” available through my Amazon A-store and his Yosemite app available at https://www.michaelfrye.com Another useful app is The Photographer’s Ephemeris for figuring out sunrise, sunset and moonrise. Available for iOS, Android and pc’s. Another useful app for national parks are the National Parks by Chimani available for Android and iOS both. Apps are free and available for all 59 National Parks. Also helpful is www.npmaps.com where you can download free NPS maps for each park. If you like to hike, http://yellowstonehikes.com is a great resource. Here are a few photos from Yosemite from myself and Bill Naiman:

The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life
This week's episode features everyone's favourite astrologer, Georgia Nicols! Georgia explains that intuition isn't part of her approach to astrology and illuminates the mathematical approach to astrology. We talk about how she got started in her work, Linda Goodman's sun signs, the Ephemeris and the ridicule that even she experiences as a "soft science" practitioner. Georgia Nicols's wisdom and wit have made her a popular international astrologer whose horoscope columns appear in the National Post, Vancouver Province, Calgary Herald, Winnipeg Free Press, Victoria Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, Press Democratic (Santa Rosa, California), China Daily (Beijing), and San Miguel (Mexico) as well as smaller weekly and monthly publications. She is a regular columnist in Elle Canada, The San Francisco Examiner, Washington Examiner (D.C.), and The Examiner (Baltimore), among others. Georgia's book, You and Your Future, is a best seller in Canada, and has international printings in three languages. (In Australia, it is published under the title "Your 40 Year Horoscope"). The Numinous Podcast is a complement to The Numinous School, an online intuition development program for people who want their self-awareness to serve a greater good.
