Today's episode is going to hit deep. We're diving into a gripping, emotional, and ultimately empowering story about sisterhood, survival, and reclaiming your voice. My guest is Puja Shah, author of the powerful novel- For My Sister. The book is about twin sisters Amla and Asya who go from living in a small village to moving to Mumbai to being sold in flesh trade.Their lives spiral into pain, loss, and isolation... but somehow, they survive. Separately. And against all odds, they reunite years later. This isn't just a story about human trafficking—it's about what it takes to live again after trauma, the complicated but unbreakable bond between sisters, and how women, even in the harshest conditions, find ways to rise.If you're a woman who's ever felt silenced, stuck, or unsure of your own strength—this conversation is for you. We'll talk about emotional survival, the mental health impact of trauma, the guilt women often carry, and what healing can really look like. You can help me bring more such conversations to you by following the podcast and by rating and reviewing us.
İngiliz hükümeti, 16 Mart 1846 tarihli Amritsar Anlaşması'yla, Müslüman nüfusun ekseriyeti teşkil ettiği Keşmir'i Hindu Mihrâce Gulab Singh'e (1792-1857) satmıştı.

Those who sell produce during the Sabbatical year are disqualified from testifying. Rabbi Shimon (in the Mishna) explains that initially, these people were called collectors of Sabbatical produce. However, when tax collectors (anasim) became more numerous, the term changed to "sellers of Sabbatical produce." The Gemara presents two interpretations of this unclear passage, with the first interpretation being rejected. Reish Lakish was following two rabbis who were traveling to Asya to intercalate the year, as he wanted to observe their process. During their journey, they encountered people plowing and harvesting during the Sabbatical year. When Reish Lakish questioned why the rabbis weren't stopping these apparent violations, they offered possible explanations for how each person's actions might be permissible. Upon reaching their destination, the rabbis went to the second floor to deliberate about the intercalation. They climbed up using a ladder and immediately removed it to prevent Reish Lakish, whom they considered bothersome, from following them. Reish Lakish later complained to Rabbi Yochanan, declaring the rabbis to be a kesher reshaim (conspiracy of wicked people) who should not participate in the year's intercalation. The Gemara then traces the origin of the term kesher reshaim through stories about Shevna, who served as Hizkiyahu's steward. Rabbi Abahu, citing Rabbi Elazar, states that the court must publicly announce when someone is found to be disqualified from serving as a witness. Until such an announcement is made, the witnesses retain their qualification to testify. There is a specific debate regarding whether this announcement requirement applies to shepherds. Regarding wrongdoers such as those who accept charity from gentiles, engage in forbidden sexual relationships, or eat from fields during harvest season - there is a discussion of their eligibility to testify. Rav Nachman presents his views on these three cases, and the Gemara either restricts the scope of these rulings or presents opposing viewpoints.

– Ağlama be, ağlama be!

This week's guest is Aysegul Savas, whose mesmerising third novel, The Anthropologists is about a great many things. It's about what it means to leave one's home. It's about attempting to lay down roots elsewhere. It's about the mystery, banality, and all-consuming nature of love. It's about the dynamics of friendship, and how those are stress-tested by life. It's about growing up and growing old. It's about how our lives are shaped by rituals…and by the lack of them. And it's about how anxiety-inducing it can be trying to buy a flat. More concretely, The Anthropologists is about Asya and Manu, young expats in an unnamed foreign city. Asya is a documentary maker, Manu works for an NGO. They lead a care-free, meticulously tended-to life of nights out, mornings in, coffees and pints with friends, and evenings of poetry with their eccentric upstairs neighbour. But all of this—its sustainability, its “realness”— is called into question by their decision to begin flat-hunting, as well as by other life changes—changes that are in their lives, but out of their control.Buy The Anthropologists here: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/the-anthropologists*Aysegül Savas is the author of the acclaimed novels Walking on the Ceiling and White on White. Jesus tells us that in order to discover his Kingdom, we must humble ourselves like little children. So what does it mean for us to have “child-like faith”? And how can we develop a “child-like” faith that doesn't become a “child-ish” faith? These are some of the questions we'll consider in today's sermon. Asya and Manu are looking at apartments, envisioning their future in a foreign city. What should their life here look like? What rituals will structure their days? Whom can they consider family? As the young couple dreams about the possibilities of each new listing, Asya, a documentarian, gathers footage from the neighborhood like an anthropologist observing local customs. "Forget about daily life," chides her grandmother on the phone. "We named you for a whole continent and you're filming a park." Back in their home countries parents age, grandparents get sick, nieces and nephews grow up-all just slightly out of reach. But Asya and Manu's new world is growing, too, they hope. As they open the horizons of their lives, what and whom will they hold onto, and what will they need to release? Unfolding over a series of apartment viewings, late-night conversations, last rounds of drinks and lazy breakfasts, The Anthropologists (Bloomsbury, 2024) is a soulful examination of homebuilding and modern love, written with Aysegül Savas' distinctive elegance, warmth, and humor.
