To mark ten years since Terry Pratchett's death, Liz, Ben and guest Myfanwy Coghill discuss his 2010 Richard Dimbleby lecture, “Shaking Hands with Death”. Please note that this episode includes discussions of death, terminal illness, assisted dying and suicide. Pratchett was the first novelist to give the Richard Dimbleby Lecture, an annual talk broadcast on the BBC in memory of Dimbleby, a BBC broadcaster who died in 1965. His subject was a turning point in his activism: from raising awareness (and money) for Alzheimer's Disease, to talking openly about the inevitability of death, and the importance of being able to choose a good one, safely and legally. The speech was collected in A Slip of the Keyboard in 2014, and published in a standalone volume with an introduction by Rob Wilkins in 2015. The televised version is also (currently) on YouTube. We hope we've done Pratchett justice in carrying on this discussion. We are lucky to live in Australia, where citizens in most states have access to assisted dying - even if under more narrow circumstances than Pratchett might have liked. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill provides similar access, and was introduced in the UK parliament by backbench Labour MP Kim Leadbeater in November 2024. It's currently at the committee stage. (See our episode notes for more details.) Guest Myfanwy Coghill (she/her) has been many things, including an opera singer, a teacher, a funeral director, and a Dungeon Master (of the Dungeons & Dragons variety). She previously appeared to discuss Maskerade in #Pratchat23, “The Music of the Nitt”, in September 2019. GNU Elspeth Sutherland; Kat Muscat; Stella Young; Cal Wilson; DJ Ian; and Terry Pratchett. We'd love you to consider supporting the Kat Muscat Fellowship, which provides support and development for a young Australian writer or editor each year; or helping to fund a new documentary about Stella Young, I Am Not Your Inspiration (which coincidentally launched in between us recording and publishing this episode). You can find episode notes and errata on our web site. Next month is our rescheduled discussion about both volumes of the Ankh-Morpork Archives, which collect material from the Discworld diaries, and their sibling publication The Discworld Almanack! There's still time for a few more questions; send them in via email (chat@pratchatpodcast.com), or social media using the hashtag #Pratchat84.

Today's Two Words: FUNNY BUSINESS In this episode, I'm joined by Janet McLeod, the Fairy Godmother of Melbourne Comedy. Janet runs Local Laughs, which at 20 years, is the longest running comedy room in Australia with a sole operator/programmer...and one of my fave spots to perform. We discuss comedy in all its glory — what is comedy, really? What makes a great comedian? How do you filter out the a**holes to make comedy rooms safe workplaces? Janet shares all her magical insights and wisdom, much to our audience's delight. A special note: this episode was recorded a week before beautiful and kind Cal Wilson suddenly passed away. Cal is one of my comedy heroines and she introduced me to Janet after we met through The Moth storytelling community in Melbourne. One of my favourite Cal memories is performing with her at Local Laughs in 2018 and she gave me the biggest hug after I got off the stage. So special! In this episode, Janet and I speak of Cal's kindness. I'm grateful to have met and worked with her and she'll always be one of my faves. ABOUT JANET MCLEOD With over 25 years' experience producing and programming live shows, Janet's curatorial skills are frequently called upon by organisations and arts festivals across Australia and in the UK including Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Glen Eira Storytelling Festival, Soho Theatre, Melbourne Fringe, and Fringe World in Perth. She has managed over 60 separate projects in her professional career, including long-standing weekly comedy events Planet Comedy and Local Laughs. (Image credit: Alan Moyle — Local Laugh's 20th birthday celebration, June 2023) An active champion of women in comedy, Janet was one of the originators of Upfront Comedy - now a hallmark event at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival - and has since produced all-women comedy show like Miss (you) and Frockin' Hilarious in Melbourne. Sad news broke this week of the passing of beloved comedian Cal Wilson, after a short illness fighting an unexpected and aggressive cancer. Cal, who was only 53, had a long and colourful career in Australian entertainment. Over the last 20 years she was a core character across the Australian stand-up comedy circuit, as well as a feature on many iconic TV shows, such as the original Thank God Your Here, Spicks and Specks and Good News Week. On this extra episode of The Briefing, Madeline Palmer speaks with artist Andrea Huelin, who painted the 2023 Archibald Packing Room Prize for her portrait of Cal Wilson, 'Clown Jewels'. Andrea shares her experience of painting the portrait, what she hopes the portrait meant to Cal, and what she hopes it will mean for her legacy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#265: Beckham, Gaffa Banana, Silent Walking It's been a full on week, and we're here to give you a little reprieve if you need it. Fat Bear Week is here to help us, we have a winner, she is amazing, and we celebrate Grazer. Meanwhile Bang Fam are rallying around the Peregrine Falcons after their fortunes took a turn. The conceptual art piece “Comedian” (a banana gaffa taped to a wall) is coming to Melbourne for the NGV's Triennial, so it's time for Myf's critical art eye. And for Zan to wonder who's hungry. 90's sitcoms are back, but why? Frasier is recreating the nostalgia to the letter, while Jerry Seinfeld has been hinting of some sort of return. We explain all. Looking back seems to be the way we're moving forward across culture in general, with none doing it better or bigger this week than the Beckham docu-series on Netflix. We dig into this epic story of Posh and Becks, football and fantasy, and a heavy dose of bad new millenium fashion. And a great read on how the internet isn't fun anymore has crystallized a lot, and made us wistful for the world wide web. Could switching it all off and going silent walking be the answer? Myf is banging on about the second series of Billie Piper's brilliant series I Hate Suzie, while Zan is reading Kazuo Ishiguro's classic The Remains of the Day. And did you know Bang On is now on YouTube? You can now SEE us be silly duffa's. Check it out via the link below.
