That's Debatable!' is the weekly podcast of the Free Speech Union. Hosts Tom Harris and Jan MacVarish – both staffers at the FSU – talk about the free speech controversies that have erupted in the past week. Please like, subscribe and share. In this week's episode, Jan Macvarish and Connie Shaw discuss the FSU's campaign against the ‘banter ban'. Connie describes legislative reforms that are being proposed as part of the government's Employment Rights Bill and the problems the FSU has identified with them for free speech. FSU General Secretary addressed the audience at last week's Comedy Unleashed gig and interviewed comedians including Andrew Doyle, Josh Howie and Francis Foster, about the prospect of ‘banter bouncers' in venues, clubs and pubs. You can find out more and watch the video here. Toby also appeared on Sunday's Free Speech Nation (around 1 hour 35 minutes in) to discuss the bill with Andrew Doyle. Connie encourages viewers and listeners to use our special online tool to alert members of the House of Lords to the dangers of the Bill and to encourage them to support Lord Young's amendments. It's not just the FSU that has identified problems - the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has also warned of the ‘risk of unintended consequences' and counselled the need to ‘balance…rights to freedom from harassment and freedom of expression'. You can read their briefing here. Connie then introduces a news story she spotted about a US school-teacher who has been threatened with the sack for reading an unedited passage of To Kill A Mockingbird to pupils. She and Jan discuss how children need to be able to understand the context in which words gain their power and the role of teachers in guiding them through linguistic taboos that have changed over time. They then go on to talk about Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, written in 1953, which imagines a future America where books are banned and destroyed by fire. The novel explores the impact on memory, imagination and the ability to think and experience emotion that this has. And finally, they return to the ‘banter' question with an article reporting that a university researcher went undercover at his own golf club to analyse how jokes, innuendo and laddish banter forged a bonded but potentially exclusionary culture amongst golfers. The story raises questions about freedom of association, the role of humour in human relationships and research ethics. Edited by Jason Clift
Today we are joined by an up and coming talent you are going to become obsessed with, Ellis Howard. Ellis has been treading the theatre boards for a while including in the Olivier nominated, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird' and pulling together an incredible screenwriting career but now he's about to become a role model to many, starring in the exceptional BBC drama, ‘What It Feels Like For A Girl'. Based on the powerful memoir by previous Reign guest, Paris Lees (head back to episode 18) the show follows Ellis's character Bryon in the year 2000 trying to break out of their small town and start their queer journey, which eventually leads to Byron transitioning. Today we talk about how Ellis landed a role that really changed his life in so many ways and how he went from “running away from himself at 100 miles per hour,” growing up queer in a working class background to embracing his identity fully. When I say I loved talking to Ellis, I mean it with my whole gay heart because sometimes there is nothing more comforting than sitting across from a fellow queer and having a chat that really speaks to you. The stage of disease measures if the cancer has spread, and how far is has spread from where it started. Cancer staging is a way to communicate the extent of cancer in the body so that everyone involved is speaking the same language.Cancer Staging Example: Stomach CancerDr. Matzo used stomach cancer as a way to understand staging. Visit our show notes for an image and detailed explanations.Marianne also shared about cancer sub-categories, such as 1a, 2c, etc. This further refines the definition of how far the cancer has spread.Cancer Staging with TNM CategoriesThe Tumor-Node-Metastasis notation is an even more refined way to define the extent of cancer spread. TNM helps to establish the anatomic extent of the disease, and the combination of the 3 factors can define the overall tumor stage. This method allows for simplification, with cancers staged from I-IV, with stage IV being the most severe stage. Related Episodes:S5E45: Why Does Cancer Exist? CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of racism, sexual assault, false imprisonment. 1962 contained not one but two books that were thrust upon us as required school reading (or acting), but none loom as large as this story. To be fair, it's one of the few stories about the pre-Civil Rights Act South that's presented through the eyes of a child, and that means it's perfect school fodder. The movie was a huge labor of love from the entire creative team, which is fantastic and reads on screen, but also makes for a truly uneven watching experience. Director Robert Mulligan gets the most out of the cast, but his execution of trying to see things through Jem & Scout's perspective never translates on screen. In fact, the only moments that truly work are in the courtroom, when the reality of small town Alabama racism come roaring back. It's a shame it's not a better movie because Gregory Peck is giving his masterpiece performance and the kids are phenomenal on screen, but acting alone cannot a movie make. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of alcoholism, child neglect, substance abuse, addiction. Every year at the Oscars there's a movie that stands out as the film that should be the Best Picture, just for the sheer raw power of its storytelling. This is that movie. Jack Lemmon is giving a performance for the ages, the supporting cast is rock solid, and the always contrarian Blake Edwards goes for broke. This could have easily been a melodrama, but you get the sense very quickly that everyone making this movie got the impact of what they were doing here. And that's incredible, considering there's movies that come out in 2025 that can't capture the truth of addiction like this movie. fWotD Episode 2715: To Kill a Mockingbird Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 10 October 2024 is To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by the American author Harper Lee. It was published in July 1960 and became instantly successful. In the United States, it is widely read in high schools and middle schools. To Kill a Mockingbird has become a classic of modern American literature; a year after its release, it won the Pulitzer Prize. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was ten.Despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality, the novel is renowned for its warmth and humor. Atticus Finch, the narrator's father, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. The historian Joseph Crespino explains, "In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its main character, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism." As a Southern Gothic novel and Bildungsroman, the primary themes of To Kill a Mockingbird involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence. Scholars have noted that Lee also addresses issues of class, courage, compassion, and gender roles in the Deep South. Lessons from the book emphasize tolerance and decry prejudice. Despite its themes, To Kill a Mockingbird has been subject to campaigns for removal from public classrooms, often challenged for its use of racial epithets. In 2006, British librarians ranked the book ahead of the Bible as one "every adult should read before they die".Reaction to the novel varied widely upon publication. Despite the number of copies sold and its widespread use in education, literary analysis of it is sparse. Author Mary McDonough Murphy, who collected individual impressions of To Kill a Mockingbird by several authors and public figures, calls the book "an astonishing phenomenon". It was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film in 1962 by director Robert Mulligan, with a screenplay by Horton Foote. Since 1990, a play based on the novel has been performed annually in Harper Lee's hometown. To Kill a Mockingbird was Lee's only published book until Go Set a Watchman, an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, was published on July 14, 2015. Lee continued to respond to her work's impact until her death in February 2016, although she had refused any personal publicity for herself or the novel since 1964.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:23 UTC on Thursday, 10 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see To Kill a Mockingbird on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joey.

In this episode, we review the classic 1962 courtroom drama, "To Kill a Mockingbird", starring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham! Listen now!
Book Vs. Movie: To Kill a MockingbirdThe 1960 Novel Vs. the 1962 MovieThe 1962 film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Robert Mulligan, is a powerful retelling of Harper Lee's classic novel. The story follows Atticus Finch, played by Gregory Peck in an Oscar-winning performance, as he defends Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a Black man falsely accused of raping a white woman in 1930s Alabama. The film is seen through the eyes of Atticus's young daughter, Scout (Mary Badham), and her brother Jem (Phillip Alford), who grapple with the harsh realities of racism and injustice in their small town. Key characters include Dill Harris (John Megna), Scout and Jem's imaginative friend, and Boo Radley (Robert Duvall), the mysterious neighbor who ultimately reveals his true character. The movie focuses on the moral courage of Atticus and the loss of innocence experienced by the children, capturing the essence of the novel's themes in a more streamlined narrative.Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? Classic Films, Classic Crucible Lessons VI: To Kill a Mockingbird One person doing the right thing. That sums up succinctly TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, the movie we discuss this week on the sixth episode of our summer series, CLASSIC FILMS, CLASSIC CRUCIBLE LESSONS. The person who keeps doing the right thing in this movie the American Film Institute ranked at number 25 on its Top 100 list is Atticus Finch. He's a kind, compassionate lawyer and honest, dedicated father who refuses to bend to the racial prejudices of his time and place – 1930s Alabama. In defending his client, a wrongly accused black man, he models for his children, Jem and Scout, what character that doesn't see color looks like. As one of his neighbors tells the children at the tragic conclusion of the trial, “Some men in this world are born to do our unpleasant jobs for us ... your father is one of them.” That would have been an agonizing crucible for many men of the era, but for Atticus Finch it was a role he fulfilled with honor and humility that can teach us a lot about weathering our own crucible experiences. Last time we saw Ziggy, we were talking about the Tarantino-inspired crime thriller “Suicide Kings.” This episode was supposed to recorded months prior to us actually recording it, but many circumstances prevented Zig and I from recording.“Soul Survivors,” is arguably the most complex college-aged horror film of the 2000's, and I've seen most of them. An-all star cast (before they became massive names), when they were all working on their craft shine in this often looked-over flick. The pod, much like the movie, was all over the place and I was thrilled to have Zig with me to on this journey! David talks to the writer and broadcaster Helen Lewis about Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird (1960), one of the most widely read and best-loved novels of the twentieth century, and in the twenty-first century increasingly one of the most controversial. Is the book an attack on or an apology for Southern racism? How does its view of race relate to the picture it paints of class and caste in 1930s Alabama? And what on earth are we to make of the recently published prequel/sequel Go Set A Watchman?
