Zapraszamy do wysłuchania naszej rozmowy! Książki, o których mówimy w podkaście, to: Michelle Alexander, „The New Jim Crow”, Penguin; Anthony Ray Hinton i Lara Love Hardin, „The Sun Does Shine”, Penguin; Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, „Chain-Gang All-Stars”, Vintage. This is our unabridged interview with Anthony Ray Hinton. “I don't care whether you did or didn't do it. I'm going to make sure you're found guilty.” These were the words that Anthony Ray Hinton says put him on Alabama's death row for nearly 3 decades for a murder he didn't commit. In 2015, after numerous appeals, he was released after the US Supreme Court vacated the charges, and the State of Alabama dropped the case. Mr. Hinton is author of the New York Times bestseller, “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row.” His story recounts his harrowing decades on death row, and his intention to make choices for compassion and joy in the midst of the chaos of prison life, spending 23 hours every day in a 5 x 7 cell, and watching 54 individuals pass his cell on their way to the death chamber. “You can sit in that cell and be angry with the world,” he says, “or you can sit in that cell and try to find peace and joy. But you can't say you don't have a choice.” Similar episodes: Pervis Payne: The Death Penalty The Architect of the American Civil Rights Movement: James Lawson Eddie Glaude: On James Baldwin's America Jameel McGee and Andrew Collins: Dirty Cop, False Arrest, and Unexpected Consequences Resources mentioned this episode The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton The Sun Does Shine (Young Readers Edition) by Anthony Ray Hinton Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin PDF of Lee's Interview Notes Transcript for Abridged Episode Subscribe to episodes: Apple | Spotify | Amazon | Stitcher | Google | YouTube Follow Us: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | YouTube Follow Lee: Instagram | Twitter Join our Email List: nosmallendeavor.com See Privacy Policy: Privacy Policy Shop No Small Endeavor Merch: Scandalous Witness Course | Scandalous Witness Book | Joy & the Good Life Course Amazon Affiliate Disclosure: Tokens Media, LLC is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.
Anthony Ray Hinton spent 30 years on death row for a murder he did not commit. There was no evidence against him, he was charged because he is black. During his time on death row, he made some unlikely friends and never lost hope. Anthony's incredible story is one of unimaginable injustice but also of resilience and forgiveness. During his incarceration, Anthony watched 54 inmates walk to their deaths on the electric chair. The same death penalty that sentenced Anthony in Alabama has been in the news recently due to an offender being put to death using pure nitrogen gas - the first death row inmate to be executed using this method anywhere in the world. Whether the death penalty should be used is being increasingly debated. Anthony himself is advocating for change and, here, as well as sharing his own story, tells us why. Anthony's story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. This episode will grip you, enrage you and stay with you. It may even change your views on redemption and the death penalty. In this installment of Best Of The Gist, we listen back to Mike's 2019 interview with Anthony Ray Hinton, who was wrongfully convicted for the murder of two teenagers in Alabama in 1985. After 30 years on death row, Hinton's conviction was overturned, and he was released. He's since become an advocate for those facing the death penalty and the abolishment of it in the United States. Hinton's book is titled, The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row. Then we hear Mike's Wednesday Spiel about Kenneth Eugene Smith's recent execution by nitrogen hypoxia. Observers were disturbed by the process of Smith's final five minutes on Earth, but officials of the state of Alabama where only disturbed by others' disturbed-ness. But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady secret: she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors' credit cards. Until it all comes crumbling down. Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She learns that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies. Furniture is made from tampon boxes, and Snickers bars are currency. But Lara quickly discovers that jailhouse politics aren't that different from the PTA meetings she used to attend, and she climbs the social ladder to become the "shot caller" and earns the nickname “Mama Love.” When she's released, harnessing lessons learned from women she was incarcerated with, she reinvents herself as a ghostwriter and successful agent. Now legally co-opting other people's identities through her writing, she goes on to meet Oprah, meditate with The Dalia Lama, and have dinner with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But the shadow of her past follows her. Shame is a poison worse than heroin—there is no way to detox. Lara must learn how to forgive herself and others, navigate life as a felon on probation, and prove that she is more good than bad. The Many Lives of Mama Love is a heartbreaking, tender, and ultimately inspiring journey from shame to redemption, despite a system that makes it almost impossible for us to move beyond the worst thing we have ever done. Praise for The Many Lives of Mama Love “A suburban mom weathers addiction, jail, and parole in this roller-coaster debut memoir…Hardin mixes despair and comedy in her evocative prose: “I carefully pick through the bottom-of-purse debris until I find some small brown chips.... I don't know if I'm smoking heroin or food crumbs or lint, but I feel the anxiety slowly leave my chest.” This redemption story feels well earned.”—Publishers Weekly “In addition to revealing the struggles of female felons in a misogynist justice system, the author celebrates her own determination to accept herself and begin again. A courageous and inspiring memoir.”—Kirkus “A hilarious and heartbreaking confession that will not let you go until it is done—and then it will haunt you. It will give you hope in what is possible for each of us if we allow others—and ourselves—to move beyond our shame, find redemption, and write a new, more inspiring story of our lives.”—Lori Gottlieb, author of the New York Times bestseller, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone “Lara Love Hardin writes with the same humor and bravery that helped her navigate incarceration, sobriety and a daunting return to the community to regain her place in her children's lives. This beautifully told story flies in the face of assumptions about substance use disorder and incarcerated women and shows how community and connection help people rebuild themselves for the better.”—Piper Kerman, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Orange is the New Black “A compelling and timely rebuttal to the perverse and unjust notion that people who are convicted of crimes can only be criminals. This critically important idea is essential for a nation that has been so derailed by destructive “law and order” narratives that have left us both less just and less safe.”—Bryan Stevenson, author of the New York Times bestseller Just Mercy “The Many Lives of Mama Love is a masterclass in perseverance. This brilliant memoir is a reminder and inspiration that sometimes the only way out of suffering is to go straight through it. This book will leave you inspired and empowered to reveal your own most authentic self.”—Rich Roll, bestselling author of Finding Ultra and host of The Rich Roll Podcast “Laced with penetrating wit, written with unsparing honesty and manifesting irrepressible resilience, The Many Lives of Mama Love is a book to intrigue, enchant, instruct, entertain and inspire readers of all ages and backgrounds. It speaks to our common human experience of suffering and the healing that can follow.” —Gabor Maté M.D., author of the New York Times bestseller, The Myth of Normal “Start this thrilling, heartrending, funny book, and you won't stop. I couldn't. From page one, I was swept into Hardin's remarkable, un-put-down-able, artfully told story of suffering and redemption. This book can help anyone who's struggled and felt hopelessness (and who hasn't?). shows that not only can we survive the bleakest times, but we can thrive in them and because of them.”—David Sheff, author of #1 New York Times bestseller, Beautiful Boy “Hardin reveals who we truly are deep inside: infinite souls of limitless possibility. We are far more than the sum of what we have done and not done, what we have and do not have. In her profound, moving memoir, Hardin is honest, courageous, and challenges us to exceed the limiting definition we impose on ourselves and one another. We all can be redeemed.”—Dr. Lisa Miller, psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller, The Spiritual Child “This book will make you laugh, cry, and realize that everyone deserves a chance and, sometimes more than one. A powerful, poignant memoir filled with grace, enlightenment and love.”—Dr. James Doty, author of the New York Times bestseller, Into The Magic Shop AUTHOR BIO: LARA LOVE HARDIN is a literary agent, author, prison reform advocate, and president of True Literary. Death row survivor Anthony Ray Hinton, author of The Sun Does Shine, will speak at Simpson on Tuesday, March 29. That's because student Lexi Johnson took the lead in booking him after she read his book. Johnston joins the podcast this week to talk about how Hinton's story inspired her as a criminal justice major, and why she went to work bringing him to speak at the college.
Episode 84 ~ From Death Row to healing: Anthony Ray Hinton ~ Celebrating Black History Month Today's episode… on this last week of Black history month, is a beautiful reminder that, if you choose to see it in that way, the world will send you messages that you can use to spread love. There is so much we could cover for black history so selecting the people to feature is not easy because of the abundance of people who need to be brought to light and celebrated. I was initially going to bring awareness to Juneteenth short for June Nineteenth and formerly known as Jubilee. For those of you who want to go deeper into the history behind that moment in time, it marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all who were enslaved be freed. And it is well worth going into and researching. However, in listening to one of the many podcasts I fill my ears and soul with, I happened to land on one that spoke of Anthony Ray Hinton. It is well worth listening to. Here is the link to that episode. A Memoir of life and freedom on death row.
Original Air Date: June 12, 2018Anthony Ray Hinton's memoir, "The Sun Does Shine," an Oprah's Book Club selection, chronicles his ability to endure, survive and thrive. Oprah sits down with Anthony to talk about his transformative, gripping and emotional story of faith, forgiveness and redemption. Oprah says, "I've been listening to people's stories for most of my career, since I was 19 years old, and this is one of the most incredible stories I've ever heard." In 1985, 29-year-old Anthony was convicted of the brutal murders of two fast food workers in Birmingham, Alabama. Despite no eyewitnesses, no evidence against him and a solid alibi, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. For 30 years, he suffered in isolation and darkness on death row, serving time for crimes he did not commit. Somehow, Anthony found a way to hold on to hope, remain positive and inspire his fellow inmates.
Original Air Date: June 12, 2018Oprah continues her extraordinary interview with wrongly convicted death row inmate Anthony Ray Hinton, who shares a remarkable story about an unlikely friendship he formed in prison. He explains how he eventually found his way to freedom through the help of civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative. Anthony describes how he felt on the day he was finally released in 2015 and how he adjusted to life outside prison. He also shares the powerful lessons he learned on death row: the true meaning of compassion, the root of racism and how we can all overcome our circumstances and learn how to love. Anthony's memoir, "The Sun Does Shine," is the latest selection for Oprah's Book Club.
Original Air Date: June 6, 2018Oprah sits down with Bryan Stevenson, the law professor, civil rights attorney and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who shares why he has dedicated his life to giving a voice to incarcerated men and women. Bryan has spent more than three decades challenging poverty and racial discrimination within the criminal justice system. He explains why he believes we are not fully evolved as human beings until we care about universal human rights and basic dignity. Bryan has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners and confronting abuse of the incarcerated. Bryan also discusses his New York Times best-selling book, "Just Mercy," his views on the death penalty, and the transformative power of mercy and forgiveness. Next week, be sure to download Oprah's two-part podcast interview with one of Bryan Stevenson's most extraordinary clients, Anthony Ray Hinton, a man who wrongfully spent 30 years on death row until Bryan helped him win his freedom. Anthony's new memoir about his experience in prison, "The Sun Does Shine," was just selected for Oprah's Book Club.

Anthony Ray Hinton spent 30 years inside an Alabamian prison waiting to be executed. Hinton doesn't use the word “hell” lightly; nevertheless, that's what decades of solitary confinement was like, he says. So how did he cope? “Faith keeps you from getting caught up in everyday trauma, because your life is so consumed with trying to live like Jesus. And it was no different for me on the row. I had a job to do, and that was for those men to see Christ in me." Remarkably, Hinton believes God had a plan all along, and he was sent to death row on a special mission. He has also been able to forgive those who were responsible for this grave injustice. In this in-depth interview, Hinton shares his story with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, and explains why he believes US Christians must campaign against the death penalty. This week we are celebrating Freedom Day, or what is more commonly known as Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Anthony Ray Hinton is an American activist, writer, and author who was wrongly convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast food restaurant managers in Birmingham, Alabama. Hinton was sentenced to death and held on the state's death row for twenty-eight years. During that time, he befriended a member of the Klu Klux Klan and through that friendship, that man moved from a life of hatred to a love for people of all races, and a love for God. Ultimately, Anthony was found to be innocent of his charges and was released from prison. Dr. John M. Perkins has been a counselor to six presidents, community development leader, and civil rights legend. Dr. Perkins grew up in Mississippi and was born during the height of Jim Crow and the Great Depression. The loss of his mother due to malnutrition and his brother, who was killed by police after his return from World War II, shaped Perkins' life and ultimately inspired him to pursue civil rights issues, particularly around racial violence in the U.S. Today, at ninety-two years old, Dr. Perkins continues his work by shedding light on injustices and drawing Christians into the work of social justice and civil rights. Both of these men give us a picture of the trials and tribulations they've had to endure in this life—exacerbated by issues of race—and how they've dedicated their lives to spreading love over hate and the joy that comes in the freedom they've found in Christ. Washington Post senior critic-at-large Robin Givhan speaks with Anthony Ray Hinton, who was sentenced to death and held in solitary confinement for 28 years on Alabama's death row, about his long road to freedom and forgiveness, and the young readers edition of his book, “The Sun Does Shine.” Conversation was recorded on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
Anthony Ray Hinton has been on the pod before. In fact, our listeners chose him for the 2021 Episode of the Year. Recently, Kelly and Ray met up on stage at St. Joe's in Philly, together in person for the first time, to talk about — well — love, which guided Ray through an unjust 30 year sentence on Alabama's death row. Nothing we tell you here can prepare you for his story and insights. Just know you are about to be changed. To view this conversation, go to PBS.org/kelly. Please share with everyone you know who cares about justice and the role of faith in one man's very hard, very beautiful life.
When Jesus set about gathering His disciples, He chose people from very different backgrounds. His disciples included fishermen, a tax collector, perhaps one of royal blood, and a revolutionary. Not only did they find a working commonality, they were united and transformed through their relationship with Jesus. After Jesus' ascension, this same rag-tag twelve took the good news that Jesus taught to the farthest reaches of the world. Today's guests, like Jesus' disciples, have come from very different backgrounds and taken Jesus' love and message to very different destinations. In today's episode, we reference an excerpt from The Book of Joy, Book by 14th Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Carlton Abrams. The excerpt deals with the improbable story of Anthony Ray Hinton, a man that was arrested for a murder he did not commit because - according to the officers that arrested him - he was Black. Mr. Hinton spent 30 years on death row in a prison in Alabama until the Supreme Court finally released him. Instead of being angry and resentful of the 30 years of his life that were taken from him unjustly, Mr. Hinton forgave all the people that sent him to jail, and pointed out that "If I'm angry and unforgiving, then they would have taken the rest of my life." This episode explores how forgiveness - even of terrible transgressions against us in the past - play such a critical role in how choose to fully participate in the present, and how we shape our future. In an episode like no other, Kelly talks with Anthony Ray Hinton, an American activist and author who was wrongly convicted of murder in Alabama in 1985, and exonerated after 30 years in prison. He credits his faith, imagination and the love of a very good mother, for getting him through those years. Special thanks to the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, our production partner on the Belief series. SPECIAL NOTE: If you are moved by this episode and want to take action, please write letters to the Governor of your state asking them to abolish the death penalty and create conviction integrity units.
This episode covers five great books on justice: A Knock at Midnight by Brittany K Barnett, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton, A Shot in the Moonlight by Ben Montgomery, and Facing the Mountain by Daniel James Brown.

We're not psychologists or relationship gurus. But we did take some quizzes about love and talk about them this week! Take a listen as we discuss our results from the '5 Love Languages' quizzes (https://www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/singles-quiz/ & https://www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/couples-quiz/) and 'Attachment Style' quizzes from two different sources (https://www.attachmentproject.com/attachment-style-quiz/ & https://dianepooleheller.com/attachment-test/). Though there isn't much empirical evidence proving the validity of these tests, they are a great practice in self-introspection. And they're just plain fun to talk about! So how do you feel loved??
