Happy November! It's starting to get cold outside here in Chicago. And guess what? I love it! Yes, I'm one of those people that loves fall and even cooler temperatures. Today we welcome you back to our podcast with our special guest: Carrie McCormack, a Program Coordinator with the Child Care Resource and Referral Program in Williams Lake.We are honoured and grateful to welcome Carrie McCormack to share insights on  exploring how to create and sustain meaningful, relevant, and what Carrie describes as “heart changing” professional development through communities of practice:My name is Carrie McCormack and I am the Program Coordinator at Women's Contact Society for Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR), in Williams Lake, BC.  I was born in Williams Lake, grew up in the 100 Mile House area and then jumped on a Greyhound bus headed for Vancouver, about an hour after graduation.  I worked with TELUS (formerly BC Tel) for 20 years, BC Parks and The Terry Fox Foundation before returning to Williams Lake to support a career opportunity my husband had.  Full circle moment!  I am a big hearted, passionate and silly Grandma to 2 grandchildren, a partner and friend to my funny guy, Ron, a Mom, a sister, a daughter to Metro (Ukrainian) and Shirley (Huron Nation and French Canadian) and a friend to most everyone and those creatures that don't scare me too much.  I love sharing food and having a table full of family, friends, or the many strays my children brought home over the years. I attended University in 2019 to begin my Human Services education.  I gained a certificate as a Community Support Worker/Education Assistant, after year 1, and completed my practicum at Women's Contact Society.  I was offered the position of Program Coordinator for CCRR and accepted it with excitement and little apprehension.Age and experience have taught me that if I want to continue to grow and enjoy life's continuous surprises, I should always take the path that is a little uncomfortable, unknown or even a little awkward.  So right after I said yes to working with the ECE Bursary Team my first thoughts were, "What exactly does a Program Coordinator do? Who is ECE Pro D Bursary? and What's an ELF Communities of Practice?  ELF must be a game they teach us to play with children!"Here I am, over three years later wrapping up our fifth Communities of Practice on April 20th, 2024.  I can't wait to spend time in person with this group and Katie Crosby, Occupational Therapist, who has been working with us for over two years now.  It feels more like I'll be attending a high school reunion than a professional gathering as we have created such deep connections, support, trust in each other after sharing our stories, lots of laughs and some tears.    I am so grateful to the ECE Pro D Bursary team for their encouragement and support over the past three plus years.  The debriefs after each COP session were game changers for me and impacted the way I approach training and sharing information.  And to the participants who showed up for me, the children, their families, themselves.  Thank you for showing up, sharing, leading, questioning and impacting my heart, my work, my life.  What a gift you all have been.     I will close with this thought.  Prepare, plan, set the table and serve an appy (topic of discussion or something to ponder) and then let go and immerse yourself in the dinner conversation.  And maybe…just maybe, someone might ask about something that's not on the table.  Wowzer! If you're interested in starting your own community of practice with child care educators in your region reach out to us by visiting the ECE Professional Development Bursary website at eceprodbursary.org.

According to a survey from Realtor.com, around 12% of baby boomers plan to sell their homes in the next year – a larger share than any other generation surveyed. They are a generation rich with real estate. In fact, according to Federal Reserve data, boomers surpassed the Silent Generation in real estate wealth in 2001. You can read more in the New York Times article, “Baby Boomers: Rich With Real Estate and Not Letting Go.” To deepen the conversation, it's important to remember that the Silent Generation and the Baby Boomers, upon their death, will transfer an estimated $30 to $68 trillion to adult children. Can you say, “Wowzer”? Good thing we have a tax man, Jon Sluis with us today who can translate the implication of inheriting real estate, joint tenancy, recapture rates and selling commercial property for retirement income. Written by Laurie Higgins Illinois Family Institute (IFI) was made aware of a shocking press release issued by BLM activist Tim McGowan who is running for the school board in District 211—the same school district embroiled in a controversy in 2019 when the former superintendent and school board sexually integrated all district locker rooms and bathrooms. In his press release, Mr. McGowan opposes a slate of three candidates, accusing them of being funded by IFI, accusing us of being a “racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic hate group” whose “dark right-wing money” is “bankrolling candidates' robocalls” for his opponents. He also accuses IFI of opposing anti-bullying legislation. Wowzer. So many lies and half-truths—so little time. Let's start with the facts about our involvement. Illinois Family Action (IFI's 501c4 sister organization) paid for 1 robocall to conservative voters in the district on behalf of the three mothers who are running for the school board in part because they don't want co-ed bathrooms and locker rooms. Simon Shares Day 63 of lockdown, level 3 on Monday. As I record we're still waiting for details as to what is allowed under level 3, but it seems that rather than saying what we can do, the regulations will tell us what we can't do and that list will be short. We will be able to exercise, retail is open but restaurants and bars not. Alcohol will be sold, but not tobacco products. Personally I will pretty much stay in lockdown (aside from my daily radio show), but now with a drink. NYSE trading pit opened again on Tuesday. A throwback to the days before technology but always fun to watch, not that I have been to the NYSE. I did see the JSE in the mid 80's on a trip to Johannesburg. It was wild and made no sense to me but it was energetic and I wanted to be a part of it all. Famous Brands* (JSE code: FBR) results presentation made two comments “restaurant landscape will be irrevocably transformed” because of Covid-19. The market recovery in the casual dining segment will be “slow and unforgiving”. Woolies (JSE code: WHL) trading date shows food doing well but clothing and Australia doing very poorly. They're talking to bankers in Australia about debt covenants and Australia may need a AU$100million cash injection. Solid Coronation* (JSE code: CML) results with HEPS and dividend both up 8%. But risks remain, will private investors pull money or slow/stop deposits? Also as companies reduce head retirement money flows into their funds ever month. Tuesday in parliament Minister Dlamini-Zuma said unemployment may hit 50% and the Absa (JSE code: ABG) said they expect local 2020 GDP to be -10%. Pepkor (JSE code: PPH) saw R5.5billion in lost revenue due to COVID-19 already so far. R476million to end March and another R5billion in April. May has seen a spike in shopping so they'll get some back, but likely not all. FAANG annualised returns since the lows of March is averaging 970%. Wowzer, but as I said last week; don't fight the Fed. * I hold ungeared positions. SAWarrants was also my first successful website that launched me into the financial services industry. Recently I've been trading some warrants again as have a few traders I know and a tweetstorm I did over the weekend got a lot of question about trading warrants. The short answer is don't. They're derivatives and hence risky If you're an ETF buyer or even just a straight equity buy and holder, stay away. If you're successfully trading other derivatives then they're worth a look. Certainly, they have some benefits over traditional derivatives, but also lots of complexity. A warrant is really an option that gives the holder the right to buy or sell an underlying asset. Call goes up as does the underlying asset. Last letter of the warrant code will be A-0. Put goes up as the underlying asset falls. Last letter of the warrant code will be P-Z. The fact that it is a right, not an obligation, means your loss is capped at what you paid. Warrants trade on the JSE just like any other share or ETF with six-letter codes. First 3 letters denote the underlying asset. 4th letter is the issuer, 5th letter the style (B for normal, I for instalment and K for knockout - be very careful of knockout warrants). The last letter is as above denoting call or put. But a lot of greeks that can trip you up that are outputted by the Black-Scholes formula (this formula won the writers a Nobel prize). Gearing ~ amplification of the move. For example, 4x gearing means for every 1% move of the underlying your warrant will move 4%. You don't want to gear much more than 5x, 8x on indices. Theta ~ time decay. A warrant decays every day, every week, even if the asset moves in your direction it will lose some value. This reduces the warrant price and is very aggressive in the last third of the warrants life. Be very careful of tie decay. Expiry ~ unlike CFDs, warrants expire and if you hold at expiry you'll be paid out. If it has value. Make sure you have lots of time, at least 3 months, ideally 6 months. Time decay becomes very aggressive in the last few months. Value is price above strike prce at expiry (for calls). For puts price below strike. Strike is the price at which you can buy / sell the asset. You want the current price to ideally be 10% - 15% of the strike price. Delta ~ many things but more or less the likelihood the warrant will expire with value. One major benefit is that with warrants you can only lose hat you paid, unlike with CFDs or futures you can lose more than you deposited. The warrant issuers will also ensure there is a market maker buying and selling at fair value at all times. They will use a pricing matrix that can be found online. If you trade warrants within a Standard Online Share Trading warrant account you pay flat brokerage of R50 +taxes. And Standard Bank have a good website at warrants.co.za And I will end where I started. Be very careful and do not jump into warrants unless you're a successful trader already, otherwise, the greeks will get you. The big challenge is that you may get the direction of the trade right (call or put) but pick the wrong warrant and lose money. JSE – The JSE is a registered trademark of the JSE Limited. There are a lot of aspects today from the Moon including a juicy Grand Trine with the Moon, Uranus and the Midheaven. But it happens at a specific time - around 10:00 am this morning, so if you have a career action you could take today...use this Grand Trine to initiate it! Plus, we'll look at several other triggers the moon could fire off today, including Neptune, Mercury, Saturn, Pluto, Jupiter and the South Node! Wowzer...what a way to start the week!Feb 10 Transcription [00:00:00] And welcome in to a new week, Monday, February 10th this is going to be a not a significant week. Have you been noticing just little things with your technology yet? See, mercury is not retrograde, but it's in what they call the shadow period, so it's, it's slowing down and we'll talk more about that even as the week goes on, especially next weekend as mercury turns retrograde officially on the 16th.[00:00:28] The dates on that, if you would like to edge them into your mind will be February 16th 12 degrees Pisces, and mercury is going to tip back into Aquarius because it turns direct on March 9th at 28 degrees. Aquarius. But yeah, I've just just have been observing and I'm like, things that hadn't been happening is kind of start happening again.[00:00:52] So that's one of the big themes of the week is mercury progressively moving its way more toward a retrograde on next Sunday. Now there's a really interesting and subtle, and for you early bird listeners, you get the worm on this one. Because there's a, a, a grand trine with the moon, which now is in Virgo, moved into Virgo last night.[00:01:16] So there's a grand trine with the moon in Virgo. Uranus in Taurus. And now this is, I'm going to stretch a little bit here. So we have three things at play. You can take this for what you want. Um, the little, yeah, this one's just a little bit dicey, but in Capricorn. Okay. In Capricorn, the closest of the grand trine aspects is with the South node.[00:01:44] But I'm going to go out on the limb here and catch everything here in the optimum time on this. Grand trine is going to be right around 10 o'clock Eastern us time because the Midheaven moves into [00:02:00] Capricorn and is within the aspect of the moon. It's wide. It's wide. I'm going to admit it's wide. But when you have the, now this is kind of like what we had the other day when I said, send your resume.[00:02:12] I think that was on Saturday. This could be a followup to that may be moon in Virgo. There's the whole work connection and there's Capricorn of solid foundations and doing a really good job. And also the South node. And here's the other one, and again, this is wide, interpret it how you will, but Jupiter is sitting there at 15 degrees and at this particular optimum spot that I'm talking about of around around 10 o'clock Eastern time, the moon is six degrees away from Jupiter.[00:02:48] If you call that an orb, then you've got you got it. My little software says yes. So a, there you go. It's designed by some of the best. So what I would suggest is if you are looking for something work related, career related, if there is anything career related you need to do, this would be a really good time to do it.[00:03:11] Send an email, make a phone call, push out a resume, put an application online. If you are searching for a job, do all of the things, think of your mind spinning around, whatever you would do a career wise, this would be a really good time to do it. And it's a really narrow window because, and I'm not going to get into the path of the Midheaven, but the Midheaven moves through the day really, really fast.[00:03:36] So this only just bumps in and bumps out for a wee little bit on the Midheaven piece. Now, the Jupiter moon Uranus piece goes until about noon Eastern time. So if we take Uranus moon, Jupiter, South node, that is from the time this podcast is released in the morning up until about noon Eastern. That is in [00:04:00] play.[00:04:00] After that, the moon has moved too far off. It loses its coupling with Uranus, and that breaks the grand trine. Now there are some other aspects. I mean, this moon is throwing off mega aspects today, so the ones that stay with us, okay, trying to, the South node trying to Jupiter semis square to Saturn and Pluto opposite mercury and opposite Neptune.[00:04:27] Wow. I mean, we don't have time to go into all of that mega energy. I mean, there could be all kinds of trip wires off of this today. Let's go through and we'll just kind of highlight each one quickly, and I'm going to start and move clockwise. So let's start up there with Neptune in Pisces opposite the moon.[00:04:47] So that's going to be in play more in the afternoon and evening hours because the moon moves into a more, a better opposition position there. So if you have a great idea this afternoon. Run it by three people before you do it. Let's, let's put it that way. See your Virgo moon though, and that Piscean a theory realism.[00:05:10] Those are going to battle against each other. A Virgo is so practical and Pisces is so ethereal. That. Yeah. If you get this great, Oh, dreamy idea about how you can just totally reorganize your department. Yeah. Just a hold off until Tuesday. Mercury opposite the moon. Same thing. Bite thy tongue this afternoon would be best and and old.[00:05:35] No, no, no. That's all day. That's, that would be this morning because that kind of straddles on both sides. That aspect is there all day by dye tongue. Uh, now we've got the semis square to Saturn and Pluto. Have you been listening to this podcast for some length of time? Um, keep your journal handy and if a layer of your onion starts to peel, capture [00:06:00] it.[00:06:00] And ask for gentleness along the way. I encountered a very substantial onion peel this back kiss. It's been there for a while, but it really started to come up this, this weekend and I've just been with it. It has been very Benefic and very, open and working through, and I think that's the best outcome when these things come up.[00:06:26] Be alert and awake. See, I wake up every day. Under the guise that this is the most transformative energy in multi hundreds of years to do incredibly deep soul work, to shed my soul from any kind of residual stuff that is there that can be purged under this energy exposed, dealt with purged and removed.[00:06:54] So that I can move on in like just a completely different soul structure from here, and that's, I look for it and it shows up. I will tell you, and then the trine with Jupiter and the South node, well, I'm going to expect, even in my little issue that I'm working through, I'm going to expect some really good revelations around that today.[00:07:17] That's how I would play that trine. So if you get the. Issue under the semis square to Saturn and Pluto. You get your answers under the Jupiter South node trine, the moon. This little moon right now is a trigger. So just be careful, you know, that's the, I think that would be the carry away for today.[00:07:38] Trigger. The word trigger, whose horse was named trigger back in the old westerns. I know that the content of this podcast Is useful – you tell me so!!!  And I want as many parents as possible to be listening in. This is how we raise a generation that can lead with compassion and integrity - by parenting this way. So in this context, parenting IS social justice. Lets all be a part of changing the course by not only doing our own work to be more attuned and empathetic parents, but to support others in the work as well! This is something I will be talking a lot about in 2019. Compassion and integrity. And our DUTY to be engaging in conversations that support and forward others this way too! It can feel vulnerable and scary – but too bad. It has to happen. Speaking of compassion and integrity – and for the sake of the conversation, I define compassion as sympathetic consciousness of another persons suffering and integrity as being honest, decent, and walking our talk – these are two big themes that I want to highlight this year – both in my personal practice of being a parent and a human on the planey, as well as with the people I work with and all of you. Compassion and integrity. Today, I am going to share a bit about a book I am reading that is really blowing my mind, it is called The Path is Everywhere; uncovering the jewels hidden within you, by Matt Lacata.  If you’ve listened to the show for very long, you know that I love my energy worker/reiki master friend (shout out to Jessica) and she has turned me on to the work of Matt. I am using this book as part of my soul care time, reading a few pages in the morning to gather inspiration. I am not very far into the book, and what I read this morning gave me pause and I decided that now would be the perfect time to bring it here to discuss with all of you. The first part of the book is about what the author calls our “shadow” – this is the part of ourselves that lays dormant until it is jostled into wakefulness. Another way to make sense of it is the way that we feel when we are triggered. Our shadow is who takes over when we are riding the emotional freight train. The parts of ourselves that we may cloak in shame or guilt – the parts that we keep hidden. Most of us have a tendency to want to hide our shadow, keep it deep inside of ourselves, not let it see the light of day. Many of us may think we are pretty successful with this – until we aren’t. A lot of the clients I see come to me because their shadow is making appearances in the parenting journey and they want to fix it, they want to make it go away. I have a shadow as well – she wants control and order, she wants to know the outcome, and she wants everyone to be on her agenda. My shadow takes the behavior of others deeply personally, quickly manifesting fear, rejection and disrespect whenever I experience criticism and ridicule. My shadow, your shadow – our shadows are a part of who we are. And if, like me, you subscribe to life being purposeful, then perhaps our shadow isn’t something that we should turn away from, or get rid of. Perhaps our shadow is something we can turn towards and get curious about. You all know that I love the personal growth and development conversation. You know that I see parenting as one long personal growth and development workshop. And if you have been listening for any length of time, you know that I am deeply invested in supporting others in doing this work along with me. This is why I am talking about shadow work today. Matt Lacata writes: It is important that we cultivate the intention to become more interested in the truth of our experience than in the demand to find relief from our symptoms. Putting this in the context of parenting, especially as we look ahead to a brand new year and choosing in to growth and possibility, we can consider the truth of our experiences as taking a magnifying lens to our current struggles – bring in curiosity, ownership, honesty – and ask ourselves questions like: What am I meant to learn here? What is going on for me? What is the emotion that I can connect to right here right now? What is the story I am telling myself about my child? Myself? My safety? Our response might begin with sounding like: “well, I am pissed!” but what is underneath that? If we get into the blame game, I invite us all to bring it back to a focus on self – because regardless of what triggers our reaction, how we react is wholely ours. This takes practice friends, and a deep belief that there IS something to be learning from these interactions – faith that we CAN learn.  Once we step into that truth – that we are all continuing to learn and evolve, then we can really trust that we can be the parent we want to be. And what about the “demanding to find relief” part of what Matt wrote? Well we are already pretty skilled at this, aren’t we? Let’s consider some ways we find relief – we yell, we blame, we shame, we withdraw either physically or emotionally, some of us use substances – food, alcohol, drugs – to feel that relief. And what do we know about all of these ways of relieving the pain and discomfort of our experience – they are short term and harmful to ourselves and others.  BUT, they seem/feel easier than facing our shadow, and doing the inner work to grow and learn. And clearly this is BIG. And it is HARD. And it requires us to decide to choose in time and time again…. AND YOU CAN. And isn’t this the ultimate act of compassion and integrity??  SELF compassion and PERSONAL integrity??? IF this is landing for you – bring it up to your therapist, or hire me to coach you and support you in this work, it is what I do! You don’t have to do this alone – the journey is meant to be traveled with others, IMO. 2019 is a year to walk together – to link arms and be in community. I will share a few ways to do that at the end of this podcast…. On a personal note – I want to share solidarity to all of you that deal with partners overseas and single parents. Ben has left us to do some big work in California on the electrical grid. We don’t know how long the work down there will take – could be months. I know it isn’t the SAME as being a single parent, I know that I have the luxury of knowing my partner will be coming home eventually, but I am looking at an extended period of time holding space for the kids without their dad here….    Clearly I will have ample opportunity to lean into the TRUTH of my experiences vs finding short term relief from what triggers me… Self care will be crucial. Inviting my kids into more contribution will be crucial – this is a place we have gotten sloppy sloppy. Not that the kids aren’t contributing, just that there is very little structure, which makes me feel crazy and get naggy – no fun for anyone. So yes, I am sure you will hear me mentioning missing my man over the next little bit….  As far as joyful courage is concerned – WOWZER! So much excitement. “You can be a very charismatic introvert.” Olivia Fox Cabane This week on Podcasting Smarter, Beth Buelow is here to help us get out of our heads and into being smarter podcasters. Beth is the host of the Introvert Entrepreneur Podcast where she helps introverts amplify their strengths so they can become better leaders and entrepreneurs. She is also a business coach, author, blogger, and a professional speaker. Wowzer! Beth's Podcasting Smarter Tips: Introverts make great podcasters because they prefer one on one conversations, and tend to be the best listeners. Due to the intimate nature of podcasts, they can be effective lead magnets for people with personal service businesses such as coaches. The podcast allows potential customers to get to know you, and trust you which makes it easy for them to decide to work with you. Think of all the ways you can use your audio content. Beth re-purposed her podcast into a popular blog, and even wrote the book, The Introvert Entrepreneur. Beth regrets not getting help with her podcast sooner because it could have saved her valuable time. She now spends $300 a month in podcast production help and show notes. This frees up her time to work with the paying clients that find her through the show! Smart! By interviewing leaders in your field, and promoting their accomplishments you can create a "Circle of Champions" who will be eager to support you when needed. Always stay true to the essence of your show even when you make changes to the format. Beth uses TimeTrade to help with the scheduling of guests. She also uses a password protected form to collect details on her guests to save some research legwork. Her form was created with a Wordpress plugin called Formidable. Introverted podcasters can find it overwhelming to attend podcast conferences so it's important to pace yourself, and practice self care. Beth suggests watching out for the "shoulds". As soon as you feel like there is something you should do, it's a sign that you may be making unrealistic assumptions.
