Sorti en 1964, le morceau propulse le groupe au premier plan de la British Invasion et s'impose grâce à un riff de guitare devenu légendaire. Au fil des années, la chanson connaît de nombreuses relectures marquantes. Dès 1970, Toots & The Maytals en livrent une version reggae, avant que Robert Palmer ne la revisite en 1978 dans une interprétation groovy. En France, Julien Doré s'en empare en 2007, avec une reprise étonnamment fidèle à l'originale. En 2010, Ray Davies lui offre une nouvelle jeunesse en duo avec Metallica, sur le projet See My Friends. Pour conclure Margaux Lassalle met en lumière la reprise culte de Van Halen, parue en 1978. Plus explosive, résolument hard rock, elle transforme le titre en un nouveau tube et rend un hommage appuyé aux Kinks. Hermine Duerloo, Laurent Maur and Alexandre Piret join me on episode 150, for a retrospective on the great Toots Thielemans. Toots was born in 1922 to humble beginnings, in Brussels, Belgium, where his parents ran a cafe. His first instrument was an accordion, which he started playing at age three and showed great promise. He took up guitar and the chromatic harmonica around the age of sixteen. He then went on to tour Europe with Benny Goodman in 1950 before moving to the US in 1951 where landed a seat in the George Shearing Quintet, mainly as a guitar player, but also playing some songs on chromatic. Toots made his first solo albums from the late 1950s, including the iconic Man Bites Harmonica. From the 1960s Toots was in great demand as a session musician, recording with many giants of the music industry, such as Bill Evans, Paul Simon and Billy Joel. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert grew up singing gospel in rural Jamaica before moving to Kingston. Alongside Henry “Raleigh” Gordon and Nathaniel “Jerry” Matthias, he formed The Maytals in 1962. Their stacked harmonies and call-and-response vocals carried a gospel intensity that set them apart. Church-honed harmonies: Toots grew up singing gospel; the trio formed in Kingston (1962). Their stacked, call-and-response vocals came straight from church to the dancehall. Name & lineup: The “Maytals” began as a vocal trio; by the 1970s, the touring/recording band—Beverley's All-Stars (Jackie Jackson, Paul Douglas, Hux Brown, Rad Bryan, Winston Wright, etc.)—became the powerhouse behind Toots & The Maytals. Why it mattered: That gospel and soul energy over Jamaican rhythms made their sound instantly human and uplifting—like Otis Redding fronting a ska/rocksteady band. Tony Platt is a legendary UK recording engineer.
