Carol Nekesa doesn't know if she was ever infected by parasitic worms. But it's likely, she says, since most kids in her community had them. “It was just a normal part of childhood,” she says. Carol grew up in the 1980s in a rural village in Busia County, Kenya. Like many regions in Sub-Saharan Africa at the time, Busia lacked the infrastructure for clean water and modern sanitation, leading to the pervasive spread of infectious diseases. Parents feared deadly outbreaks like malaria and cholera, often unaware of the slower, hidden damage caused by intestinal worms. The symptoms — fatigue, diarrhea, weight loss, stunted growth — rarely made headlines, yet they shaped children's futures. At the time, more than a billion people worldwide, most of them children, were living with these infections, making parasitic worms one of the most widespread chronic health conditions on the planet. In 1998, two researchers — Ted Miguel, who is now an economics professor at UC Berkeley, and future Nobel laureate Michael Kremer — launched the Primary School Deworming Project in Busia. They had no idea that their work would become a global model proving just how much a healthy childhood matters — not just for kids in the study, but for generations to come.“It's kind of mind-blowing to be a researcher and know that your research is being cited and used as a justification for these large-scale programs,” says Miguel. “It's amazing to see.”Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts/berkeley-voices).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo courtesy of Ted Miguel. What does it mean to be a Lutheran?  The Lutheran Reformation was founded on the “Three Solas” (Latin for “alone”) “Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone”.   In 1517, Martin Luther's 95 Theses were headed in that direction.  His 1529 Small Catechism condenses those biblical truths into a text book for instruction.  In 1521, he was called to Worms and told to “sit down and shut up” by withdrawing all his writings and declaring them to be false.  Luther stood up instead and kept proclaiming the truth.  By 1530, it was time to set the record straight - against false accusations hurled against them and confusion that was spread as to what Lutherans believed.  So the process began to draft the Augsburg Confession. It was a clear and concise summary of the teachings of Scripture, a bold declaration of what the Scriptures say and what they do not.  It was a statement of biblical truth and a refutation of unbiblical error.  It was a demonstration that the Lutheran faith is the Christian faith and the orthodox teachings that the church has held too since the time of Christ.   So on June 25, 1530, the Augsburg Confession was boldly, confidently and loudly read.  Charles V and anyone else within earshot heard a systematic presentation of the Bible's truth.  They heard an incredible answer to the question "What does it mean to be a Lutheran?”  All who read its 28 articles today hear that answer as well.     What a blessing to generations of Lutheran Christians those men and their courage, conviction, and confession have been! June 25, 1530 was truly a turning point in the life of the Lutheran Church.  Blessings have been coming our way as a result ever since.  And now as you join in our discussion, those blessings are sure to come your way as well! The Augsburg Confession is included in the Book of Concord.  You can find a free version online here.  Grab your printed copy off the shelf or get your own copy here. If you have any questions about this series or our Most Certainly True Podcast, please reach out to Pastor Hackmann at bhackmann@gracedowntown.org.  If you'd like to learn more about Grace Lutheran Church, check out our website www.gracedowntown.org.

Are you having a Lenty Lent? It may feel like your failing or things are going wrong, but maybe you are right where the Lord wants you. Its just a bit of pain from the composting process of our souls.  Lent is not a gloomy interruption of life. It is the Church handing us winter on purpose.   In the garden, winter strips everything down. The bright flowers are gone. The branches look skeletal. You walk outside and think, Nothing is happening here.   But beneath the surface, roots are deepening. The soil is being replenished. Worms are turning what fell and died into nourishment. What looks like stillness is actually preparation.   Lent does the same.   It takes away the noise. It asks us to fast. To sit in silence. To feel our hunger instead of numbing it. To look honestly at what needs pruning in our lives. And at first it feels like a loss. Like grey skies feel to me today. Like not being able to see more than a few feet in front of you.   But Lent is not about deprivation for its own sake. It is about increasing capacity. Uniting ourselves to Christ in his passion. Praying in the garden of Gethsemane. Facing Calvery.    When you prune a plant, you cut away what once looked fruitful. You remove even good branches so that better fruit can grow. That is uncomfortable. It feels like diminishment. But the gardener is thinking ahead to spring.   And the compost pile is not a symbol of failure. It is where the old life breaks down so it can become nourishment for new life. In the spiritual life, our disappointments, our faliures, our surrendered dreams, even our grief, none of it is wasted. Given to God, it becomes rich soil.   Lent is when we allow that decomposition to happen.    We stop clinging. We let attachments die. We allow deeper parts of the heart to awaken. The grey days reveal what the bright days sometimes hide. They show us how much we depend on consolation instead of God Himself.   And then Easter comes.   Not as a surprise, but as fulfillment. The buds that appear are not random. They are the result of hidden work. The joy feels fuller because we remember the winter. The Alleluia sounds louder because we walked through the silence.   Spring does not erase Lent. It proves it was necessary.   I'm trying to die to myself and give God my fiat. This Lent I'm also saying "I am the handmade of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word". I'm surrendering myself to the hands of the Gardener.   And I pray for patience while the compost of my soul continues decomposing, I remind myself  that growth cannot be rushed. His ways are not my ways. But I trust and surrender.    The Gardener knows when to prune. He knows when to wait. He knows when to bring the sun.   And even when you can only see three feet in front of you, the roots are going deeper than you realize.

Viel Spaß in Rheinhessen!

In this episode of our German Reformation series, Dr. James Spencer and Dr. Greg Quiggle linger in Wittenbergbefore the Diet of Worms and Wartburg Castle to unpack the moment everyone knows—but few understand: Luther’s 95 Theses. Greg begins with the real backstory: indulgence-selling tied to the fundraising machine behind the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica and a chain of financial incentives involving an ambitious archbishop, borrowed money, and a gifted salesman—Johann Tetzel—whose catchy jingle promised liberation from purgatory at the drop of a coin. When Luther’s parishioners return with indulgences in hand, Luther doesn’t set out to start a revolution. He does what academics do: he drafts 95 points for debate and posts them publicly—more like a community bulletin board than a Hollywood act of defiance. But the moment doesn’t stay local. Two forces amplify it: A new technology: the printing press A predictable catalyst: students who love promoting their professor What was intended as a small-town disputation spreads rapidly, lands on the pope’s desk in Rome, and triggers a reaction Luther never expected—one that escalates through excommunication threats, imperial hearings, and eventually Luther’s dramatic stand before the emperor. James and Greg then trace the chain reaction: 1519 (Leipzig Debate): authority begins shifting toward Scripture over popes/councils 1520 (papal bull): Luther publicly rejects Rome’s demand to recant 1521 (Diet of Worms): Luther expects debate; Rome demands recantation Luther requests 24 hours, returns, and refuses to recant unless convinced by Scripture and plain reason Luther leaves under “safe conduct,” is “kidnapped” by agents of Frederick the Wise, and hidden at Wartburg Castle as “Knight George” In hiding, Luther produces a major turning point: his rapid German New Testament translation From there, the conversation turns to a crucial clarification often missed today: Luther did not teach modern “private interpretation” as individual autonomy. He wanted Scripture accessible, yes—but not atomized. That’s why catechesisand the teaching office matter: a catechism functions as a faithful constraint that helps the church read Scripture with shared boundaries rather than endless fragmentation. The episode closes by reframing the word Reformation itself: Luther never intended to create a new church. He aimed to reform the existing one—and the birth of Lutheran Protestant identity becomes, in many ways, an unintended necessity once Rome refuses the correction. Luther Goes to Rome: Corruption, Crisis, and the Breakthrough in Romans

In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer and Dr. Greg Quiggle pick up the story after Luther’s intensifying crisis of conscience. If the monastery wasn’t bringing peace—what could? Luther’s mentor, Johann von Staupitz, attempts an intervention, first by sending Luther to Rome, hoping the pilgrimage and the center of the Church might relieve the pressure. Instead, Rome does the opposite. Luther returns disillusioned by the moral and spiritual decay he sees—corruption, scandal, and a religious economy saturated with spiritual “transactions.” Rather than loosening Luther’s burden, Rome deepens the problem. The turning point comes through Luther’s move to Wittenberg, where rigorous study of Scripture in the original languages (and in the intellectual wake of the Renaissance and renewed interest in Greek texts) forces Luther to confront a question that had been crushing him: How can an unrighteous sinner stand before a righteous God? Greg explains how Luther’s breakthrough forms as he wrestles with texts like Psalm 31 and then Romans 1—and begins to grasp righteousness not as something he can achieve, but something God can give. Luther’s language for this is striking: “alien righteousness”—a righteousness that belongs to God, received by faith, and credited to the believer. The episode also highlights a key detail that becomes explosive: Luther starts noticing where the Church’s claims don’t match the text itself—especially when he reads Scripture in Greek. The famous early example is the shift from “do penance” to “repent” (metanoia)—a translation issue with massive theological consequences. This segment ends by setting up what comes next: the 95 Theses, the Diet of Worms, and why Luther’s translation work (and his commitment to Scripture as final authority) becomes the fuse that ignites the Reformation. WAKE UP, AMERICA! The "Permanent Bureaucracy" didn't start with the current administration—it was born in the shadows of the 1970s. Today, we are blowing the lid off the "Can of Worms" that Richard Nixon warned us about 50 years ago. From the unsealed "Deep State" files to the death of the American paycheck, we are deconstructing the systems of control that want you compliant, broke, and silent. IN THIS EPISODE: THE NIXON REHAB [A2]: James Rosen's bombshell report in the NYT exposes the seven "Classified" pages that stayed buried for half a century. We reveal how the Joint Chiefs of Staff literally robbed Nixon's desk and why the Pentagon—not the Left—was the primary force sabotaging the 37th President. THE DEATH OF THE PAYCHECK [A3]: The WSJ reports that "Big Money" is going to Capital, not Labor. We use the Robert Kiyosaki "Rich Dad" lens to explain why your job is a liability in the age of AI and why Nvidia's 50,000% growth is a warning for the white-collar class. THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE BALLOT [B1]: Camellia Peterson joins us to break down the SAVE America Act. Why is the GOP fast-tracking proof of citizenship for voter registration, and why is the "Show-Me" state leading the charge for election integrity? THE MAFIA DON DOCTRINE [B2]: J.D. Tuccille of Reason Magazine is LIVE to discuss Trump's "Tariff Trap." We explore how the President used tactical economic nukes to force India into a $500 billion trade deal and why Europe is finally "huffily" rearming themselves. JOIN THE REVOLUTION:

In this SETI Live episode, host Simon Steel (Deputy Director of the Carl Sagan Center) chats with evolutionary biologist Philipp Schiffer (Worm Lab) about one of the most astonishing discoveries in modern biology: scientists have revived a microscopic worm that had been frozen in Siberian permafrost for roughly 46,000 years. These nematodes entered a state of cryptobiosis — a kind of biological "pause" — and came back to life when gently thawed in the lab. They didn't just wiggle; they fed, reproduced, and gave us a window into life's extreme resilience. Simon and Philipp dive into the role of cryptobiosis, how radiocarbon dating places these organisms back in the late Pleistocene when woolly mammoths roamed, and what it means for the limits of suspended animation. This is biology meeting deep time — and you're invited to stretch your imagination along with the science. (Recorded live 29 January 2026.)

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend!   I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Whitney: Hello, wondering if you add minerals to your water from the kangen k8? If so what brands do you like and trust the most? Thoughts on the beam minerals brand? And do you have to put minerals in each glass as you dispense / drink it since you can't really make a big batch of hydrogen water to keep in the fridge without the hydrogen dissipating ? Thanks!                                                                                                                                            Summer: Hi Dr. Cabral! My new functional medicine doctor suggested I start BPC 157 to help with gut healing and cellular repair. Peptides are one of the few things I've never researched. The site says they are synthetic peptides originally derived from a naturally occurring sequence found in human gastric proteins. This sounds suspect to me... Is there a natural BPC 157 you would recommend, or what brand did you use when you took BPC 157? I'm hesitant to use anything synthetic. Thanks for any insight!                                                                                                                                Anonymous: HI! So I've done a lot of work on my health and healing. Preemptive apologies to anyone who doesn't want to hear this graphic question! I cut nuts and seeds because every time I eat them, the next day my stool is basically wrapped in what looks like stringy worms. I've watched this happen over the years and took a long time for me to finally figure out a pattern. At first I thought they were actual worms. They are maybe 2-3 mm in diameter and can be interwoven through the stool or just on the outer sides. It almost looks hollow which led me to wonder if I'm seeing the worm's digestive tract or perhaps it's my intestinal lining sloughing off in one long intact piece. Either way it's shocking. Wondering if nuts are just mucus machines and highly inflammatory on my gut lining? Worms? Thanks!!                                                                                                                                                          Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral! I just wanted to report back with a success! So my dad had been growing what we lovingly called a "carbuncle" on his temple for years. It was dark brown, rough, raised, and steadily growing. Through the help of your wealth of information, I guessed that it was seborrheic keratosis. He was getting frustrated with its growth and did not want to get doctors involved. I had him listen to an episode about it and he started applying ACV at least twice a day and we watched it disappear over just one month! It was probably an inch or so in diameter. We are all blown away that it completely disappeared with his consistent use of ACV! Thank you so much for all your help and sharing knowledge we can all use to help ourselves at home! My dad is happy to be rid of his "carbuncle"!                                                                                                                                                  Summer: Hello! So I have a handful of tiny cherry angiomas scattered all over my body. I had one pop up just below my collar bone and within weeks to a month it had grown significantly. It's now just under 1/2" in diameter and sticks up about 1/4". I've been applying ACV and Tea Tree oil twice daily for a couple of months. I even tried cauterizing it with a wart freezing kit. The surface dries up every few days and comes off and it will bleed profusely if I bump it after a shower or pick at it. When I apply pressure it deflates like a balloon and I can watch it refill with blood and fluid in seconds. I'm not so sure this is a cherry angioma anymore... Does it sound like something else? What can I do? I don't want to go to a doctor, but it's become quite the nuisance.
