In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Michael MacCambridge, the award-winning journalist and author featured on the acclaimed ESPN documentary series about the Kansas City Chiefs entitled "The Kingdom." Today's discussion will focus on MacCambridge's biography, Lamar Hunt - A Life in Sports, about the man who started it all. Lamar Hunt did more than launch the Kansas City Chiefs, he founded the American Football League and brought professional soccer and tennis to America. Lamar Hunt has been inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, the International Tennis Federation Hall of Fame, and the National Soccer Hall of Fame. MacCambridge and Hesse discuss how Lamar not only participated in—but was the catalyst for—multiple revolutions in sports. Many of Lamar's innovations we take for granted today. Digging deeper, perhaps most importantly, you'll learn what made Lamar Hunt an effective leader and someone beloved and respected by all who knew him. Dan's guest, Michael, is likewise remarkable in his field of journalism, which makes for an exceptionally rich and engaging discussion. MacCambridge has written several books, including the critically-acclaimed and award-winning America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured a Nation. His most recent book is The Big Time, How the 1970's Transformed Sports in America. MacCambridge is also the creator and editor of The ESPN College Football Encyclopedia, hailed by Sports Illustrated as “the Bible” of the sport. He now lives in Austin, and serves as an adjunct instructor at the Center for Sports Communication & Media at the University of Texas, and serves as co-chair on the jury of the Dan Jenkins Medal for Excellence in Sportswriting. Award-winning journalist and news anchor Elex Michaelson dreamed of working in the news business since he was a kid. Well, that dream became a reality due to his incredible work ethic, talent, determination, and undoubtedly good-natured personality. But don't let that nice-guy persona fool you. Elex is tough. He can interview CA Governor Gavin Newsom in the morning and President Donald Trump in afternoon, and both will leave feeling like they got a fair interview, largely in part because they did. Elex's skill is that he knows how to ask a pointed question without picking a side, giving his guest the room to answer. And I'm honored to welcome one of the best newscasters in the business and my friend, Elex Michaelson, to our show today. Elex has been the anchor of various nightly newscasts at @FoxLA and host of #TheIssueIs, a smart political round up of the local, state, and national issues of the week. The show's success is largely due to Elex and his A-list Rolodex, including former CA governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (Arnold actually took Elex to the gym to give him work-out tips since), senators, legendary attorneys (Gloria Allred was on Elex's show with my husband, @JohnKobyltRadio, and he got the two to dance on LIVE TV). Then there was the time he traveled with Newsom to China, interviewed Kamala Harris, and so much more. Elex has a way of getting people on opposite sides of the political spectrum to find common ground, and everyone leaves with a handshake and feeling like they got their point across successfully. And ultimately, that benefits the viewer. Before #Fox11, Elex worked for @ABC7LA, and he told me about the time he covered the Democratic National Convention and how he scored interviews with Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump. And that's all Elex's hustle. Then there's his mother's cookies. Crystal Michaelson brings them to every taping of #TheIssueIs, something everyone looks forward to. The two are close, and there's a story behind that, too. So what does Elex do in his off time? We'll ask. Where does he get his cool socks? Well ask that, too. His favorite music? We've got a list. Elex, thanks for having me on your show, too. Enjoyed every minute. It will be weird to turn on the news every night and NOT see Elex, but he won't be far. And his new venture is sure to be exciting. Because he'll make it that way. Please join me in welcoming Elex Michaelson to my show, #DeborahKobyltLIVE on all video and audio podcast platforms. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here.

Award-winning journalist James Robins joins the show to share his deeply researched and emotionally searing investigation into the war in Gaza. With chilling precision and unflinching honesty, Robins lays out how the destruction and siege of Gaza has unfolded in full view of the world—enabled by the silence and complicity of the most powerful governments on Earth.Quoting Israeli officials who openly declared the intent to “flatten everything,” Robins asks the hard question: What happens when international law fails the very people it was created to protect? In this conversation, Robins brings the sharp eye of a forensic journalist and the moral clarity of a prosecutor. Together, we challenge dominant narratives, examine the Western media's role in shaping public perception, and confront the legal, moral, and human consequences of global inaction.Follow James Robins on his Substack @ https://thedreadnought.newsPurchase his book “Blowing Up Everything is Beautiful” at https://www.skyhorsepublishing.com/arcade-publishing/9781648211553/blowing-up-everything-is-beautiful/

Send us a textGianna Toboni's book, The Volunteer: The Failure of the Death Penalty in America and One Inmate's Quest to Die with Dignity, is a morally provocative chronicle about Scott Dozier, a former Army Ranger, who was sentenced to death, and “volunteered” for the death penalty. Dozier had been convicted of murder, sentenced to death, and ultimately demanded the state enforce its own penalty. What unfolds in Toboni's book is a story not just about death, but also about the bureaucratic, moral, and psychological theater that surrounds it. As the book makes clear, Dozier was not a hero or a martyr. Nonetheless, in Dozier's story Toboni has put a magnifying glass on the contradictions of a system that claims to value life, even while enforcing the ultimate penalty, death. Toboni is an Emmy-award winning journalist and documentary film maker. The Volunteer, her debut book, was published by Simon and Schuster in April 2025. We're grateful she included the JustPod among other notable stops (including The Daily Show and Comedy Central!) on her first book tour.

What if injuries aren't inevitable, but predictable events with upstream warning signs we can actually address? Henry Abbott, award-winning journalist and founder of True Hoop, joins us to discuss his groundbreaking book "Ballistic: The New Science of Injury-Free Athletic Performance" that challenges everything we thought we knew about athletic durability.Abbott shares fascinating insights from his research at P3 (Peak Performance Project), where cutting-edge biomechanics analysis is revolutionizing how athletes train. Most surprisingly, he reveals how mental limitations often precede physical ones. Through a remarkable personal anecdote about holding his breath for over four minutes after minimal instruction, Abbott demonstrates how our brains frequently create barriers our bodies haven't actually reached. For runners specifically, Abbott provides practical wisdom on proper landing mechanics, identifying injury risk factors, and strengthening the often-neglected muscles beneath the knee that create efficient "bouncy" movement. Rather than obsessing over form while running, he suggests building capability through targeted training, then allowing your body to naturally implement improvements. In the Race Report Spotlight, we hear from 11 runners across four countries who completed the London Marathon. They share their experiences with punishing heat and incredible crowd support. They also describe the emotional highs of crossing Tower Bridge and finishing near Buckingham Palace. Their stories capture both the challenge and the magic of completing a World Major Marathon. Whether you're battling recurring injuries, seeking performance improvements, or simply wanting to run with less pain, this episode offers invaluable insights that might just transform your relationship with running. Lindsey shares her perspective on the positive potential of AI, drawing on her background in journalism and her latest work, including a mini-documentary exploring how AI is reshaping the music industry. The conversation dives into why general public adoption of AI still lags behind its rapid technological advancement. Lindsey, Greg, and Geoff explore the trust gap, the role media plays in public education about AI, and the ongoing dominance of ChatGPT in the large language model space. Neurodiversity is an umbrella term which refers to understanding the diversity of all human brains, and the way in which we interact with the world. Often the variation is within behavioural traits that diversifies us from each other, and thankfully society is coming to a place of realising that it’s not a deficit to be neurodivergent, simply difference between one person to another. That being said, it’s taken too long for us to get to this understanding, and we still have a way to go. Thankfully for women like Madonna King , an Award Winning Journalist who has previously covered many areas including education around teen girls and their emotional and physical development, and Rebecca Sparrow - acclaimed Writer, Columnist and Public Speaker who raises awareness and advocates for teen friendship education and teen emotional development, both came together and combined powers to bring information, resources and spotlight the widely prevalent yet still misunderstood conditions that fall within the umbrella term of Neurodiversity. Both leaders in this area who are driven with personal passion and have dedicated their careers in covering children and teens development, have collated and created the book titled “Out of the Box”, as a call to action but also a one stop guide, for those like Rebecca, who wished back when her own child was diagnosed with Autism, that this type of information was available to navigate the unknown and overwhelm of a new diagnosis. As we learn in this book, and through listening to Rebecca and Madonna, knowledge is power when it comes to truly understanding who you are and how you are built to function. Knowing and understanding, can make those that feel different to the neurotypical, feel less alone and in fact, help the neurodivergent use it as their superpower. With America In Major New Administration & the Political News View Headlines Changing Everyday, This Book is Particularly Intriguing Now!!In 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard carry Egerton's thesis forward in The Southernization of America, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America's current political and cultural landscape. They dive deeper, examining the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today, the racial backlash against President Obama, family separation on our southern border, the rise of the Christian right, the white supremacist riots in Charlottesville, the death of George Floyd, and the attack on our nation's capitol. They find hope in the South too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that might ultimately lead the nation on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege.Frye Gaillard is an award-winning journalist with over 30 published works on Southern history and culture, including Watermelon Wine; Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement that Changed America; The Books That Mattered: A Reader's Memoir; Journey to the Wilderness: War, Memory, and a Southern Family's Civil War Letters; Go South to Freedom; A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s, Our Decade of Hope, Possibility, and Innocence Lost; and The Slave Who Went to Congress. A Hard Rain was selected as one of NPR's Best Books of 2018. Writer-in-residence at the University of South Alabama, he is also John Egerton Scholar in Residence at the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi. He is the winner of the Clarence Cason Award for Nonfiction Writing, the Lillian Smith Book Award, and the Eugene Current-Garcia Award For Distinction in Literary Scholarship. In 2019, Gaillard was awarded the Alabama Governor's Arts Award for his contributions to literature.Cynthia Tucker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist who has spent most of her career in journalism, having previously worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as an editorial page editor and as a Washington-based political columnist. She has also been featured as a political commentator on television and radio. Tucker's work as a journalist has been celebrated by the National Association of Black Journalists (who inducted her into its hall of fame), Harvard University, and the Alabama Humanities Foundation. He is a former professional player who was the British Junior Champion in 1977 , but these days is extremely busy as an organizer, journalist, author, store-owner, and Captain of the England Olympiad team.
