We covered over fifty movies that were released in 2024. Naturally, some were better than others. Unfortunately, when you cover as much stuff as we did, some things end up being bad. As in, REALLY bad. Over the next two weeks, we are going to talk about the films from 2024 that stood out the most to us. First things first, we are messing with the worst.It's not often that movies make us mad. Bored or frustrated, but actual anger? That just does not happen. Especially when you deal with indie cinema as much as we do. We understand that budgets will not be as high, there are not as many resources, and creativity is not limited to the script. Indie films get a pass from us when it comes to special effects, limited locations, and at times, the acting.But there are times when a movie will leave us with a very bad impression. (Blake is still fuming over Soft & Quiet.) This year, we covered two of the most infuriating films we have ever seen. One of them seemed like it was an intentional slap to the faces of anyone who has ever claimed to like horror movies. It made a point of making things very personal. The other was a documentary that stubbornly refused to back up any of its claims, had nothing interesting to say, and even lied to the audience.Thankfully, there were films that managed to just simply be bad. We discuss a thematic trilogy that was a great idea in theory, a supposed body horror movie that is more confusing than captivating, and a script that sounds like it was written by an edgy fifteen year old. It is well written and reflects the values that Voldemort has. However, he is wrong. If this quote was instead something like: “In the world, there is more than good and evil. There is power, and those too weak to seek it” it might have rung true. Unfortunately Voldemort disregards the very ideas of good and evil as false.·      11:32 “If it's true, what you say, and he has the Elder Wand, you really don't stand a chance.” This quote is far from false. That is not the reason why it is among my least favorite. In fact, I would go as far as to say that Ollivander is completely right. He just shouldn't have told Harry that the fight is pointless before it even begins.·      17:50 “He's not back!” Fudge is ignorant. He doesn't want to believe that Voldemort is back, and even if he knows that he is, he insists on continuing to say that Voldemort is far from returned. If Fudge had just accepted it and began action earlier, it may have been much easier to win.·      21:55 “He's not James, Sirius.” I didn't think Mrs. Weasley would get on this list, but here we are. Sirius and Mrs. Weasley are arguing about Harry's involvement in the Order of the Phoenix, when she drops this on Sirius. She shouldn't feel the need to go this low.·      27:03 “I don't think you're a waste of space.” Dudley finally makes this realization after 17 years of living with his cousin. This is such a heart-wrenching quote and probably the nicest thing Dudley has ever said in his life, but it comes at the worst time. It is a shame that the very moment they have to say goodbye is the moment they finally reach somewhat good terms. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a legacy sequel to the 1988 cult classic, took in close to $145 million at the worldwide box office after premiering to a mostly positive reception out of Venice just two weeks ago. The team break down the film, how it fits in with the original, Keaton's performance, the evolution of the existing characters alongside the addition of new one, and what Burton should do next. After talk about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, they transitioned to talking about the “legacy sequel,” which is a film that follows the continuity of the original movie(s), but takes place further along the timeline and focuses on new characters with the original ones still existing in the new story. Sometimes the film can even follow the same formula as the original film, just adding in new special effects or characters to make the audience feel like they are witnessing this world for the first time; essentially a nostalgia bomb. While these don't always work, there are some that are an exception to the rule, as Ryan, Karen, and Cody discuss when they talked about films like Top Gun: Maverick, Creed, Doctor Sleep, The Color of Money, Before Sunset, Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mary Poppins Returns, and more, including some legacy sequels that frustrate them like the recent Scream and Indiana Jones films.
