Fun and informal discussions about overcoming the common hurdles that prevent people from getting outdoors more. Basically, learn from our mistakes and get outside.
This month the guys sat down with a previous guest and he brought a friend! We have Kalman Tinka and Connor Bos (aka Ghost Mule and Hot Pants) in the studio. During our normal check-in Kyle had a HUGE announcement, he is now engaged! After the rest of the check-in, Trevor covered his homework from the last episode, then we moved onto our main topic. In a bit of a different direction than our normal episodes, we talked about a brand-new route that Kalman and Connor created and will be attempting the summer of 2025 in the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness in Montana. We talk about the route itself, resupply strategies, the main challenges that the route will present, bear precautions they are taking, portions of the route they are most looking forward to, what makes their hiking partnership work, and finally why they are undertaking this challenge. It was great having Kalman on again and having Connor on for the first time. We are stoked for their trip this summer and wish them all the luck in the world! This month we sit down with State Park Manager and work acquaintance of Kyle, Lee Dillon. After our normal catch up, we dive right into Lee's experience and opinions on handicap accessibility in the outdoors. Lee has a unique perspective on this as a care giver for his son who was diagnosed with MS and used a wheelchair for the latter part of his life. We talk about measures that are being put in place in the park that Lee works in, prejudices that Lee has observed against handicapped individuals, how this is a personal blind spot for Kyle and Trevor since we are able bodied individuals, and really just how making even small parts of the outdoors accessible to people with mobility issues can greatly increase their quality and enjoyment of life. As we always say, the Outdoors is for EVERYONE! Having Lee on was an absolute delight and it was great to hit on a topic that we haven't really touched on in the past. We are still here! This month we sit down with a few of our friends that took part in our yearly Adventure Crew Trip. Our destination this year was Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. After we did some quick introductions we went straight into talking about our trip. After covering some basics of what our trip entailed, how we got out to the island, if Isle Royale met our expectations, our favorite moments, what wildlife we encountered, a tangent about what a designated wilderness area is, tips for folks that would like to plan a trip to Isle Royale, some comments about group dynamics since this was the largest group we've done a trip with and would we go back to Isle Royale. After a three-month hiatus, the guys sat down with one of Trevor's friends from Grad School and certified horse girl, Emily Wolin! After introducing Emily, our normal check-in and going over how Emily was introduced to the outdoors, we got into our main topic, Horse Talk. We go really deep into different styles of riding, Trevor's limited experience with horse riding, tons of horse terms, what does the term “horse girl” mean to us, fun horse facts, the horse – rider relationship, and more. Emily is also currently enrolled in Farrier school so we touch on what farriers are, what they do, and how they can truly make a horse's life better. We wrap up with Trevor's favorite questions and then bring it home with our normal podcasting housework. Emily, thanks for coming on and telling us all about your passions! This month the guyssat down with hiker, youtuber, and member of the outdoor retail industry, Kalman Tinka! After our regular catch up we get into our conversation with Kalman. The conversation starts with how he was introduced to the outdoors and how his life brought him to his current relationship with the outdoors, but then it varies from how he uses hiking to aid in his fitness and to combat PTSD, how the goals of his YouTube channel align well with the podcast, solo vs. group hiking, tips for people figuring out their gear for their outdoor adventures, how popular gear may not always be the best for every person, and the importance of stretching and training to prevent injury while hiking. We finish up with Trevor's favorite questions and then bring it home. Thanks Kalman for coming on. It was a delight to talk with you. This month the guys sat down with outdoor educator, wilderness instructor, AT thru-hiker, and all-around interesting person, Justin Tucker! After a short intro and a quick catch up, we got ino the main part of our conversation with Justin. The conversation varied from questions about Justin's job as a wilderness instructor, how Justin's first big outdoor adventure was a spur of the moment trip to Iceland, his journey from taking the train from NYC for day hikes to hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, dealing with loneliness while on trail, his experience as a minoritized individual on the AT, and how vlogging his AT hike had a positive impact on his hike among other topics. Trevor then asks his favorite questions and Justin brings up how important it is to get people of color into the outdoors because we all belong outside and there is a lot of work and conversations that need to happen before that becomes a reality. We then brought it home with plugs and the normal things to wrap things up. Thanks again for coming on the podcast Justin. It was our pleasure to tell your story and your experiences with everyone! This month the guys sat down with one of Kyle's adventure buddies, Javier Sorto. After our normal quick catch up, we jump right into our main topic, all about summitting Mt. Washington in the Winter! Javier leads a group up the mountain every New Years and this year, Kyle and his girlfriend were part of the group. We chat about Mt. Washington, the trip itself, the gear required, how a winter ascent of Washington differs from one in the summer, the importance of safety in the mountains in the winter, and that really with enough preparation, this kind of endeavor is more achievable than one might expect at first glance. We round out the conversation with Trevor's favorite questions then bring it on home. This month Kyle is back in studio, so the guys sat down with the founder of Xplore N More – Philly, John Harper. After our normal quick catch up, we get right into our main topic which is centered around how John makes and maintains connections through his group, Xplore N More – Philly. The conversation varies from how Joh started this group, the barriers he works to remove for members, how he manages a group of that size, the responsibilities that fall on people that run adventure groups like this, and even tips on how to start your own group. After finishing up the interview with Trevor's favorite questions, we bring it on home and wrap things up. This month Kyle couldn't make it to the recording due to prior commitments, but Trevor sat down with friend of the podcast, Tim Kottman, to talk about his favorite hobby, Bowfishing. After a quick catchup, we hit on a number of topics ranging from differences from “regular” fishing, licenses and regulations, equipment needed to get started, what kind of conditions are best to go bowfishing in, and numerous others. As we discussed the types of fish that Tim usually targets, we found out that he typically goes after carp species, many of which are invasive to the waters he is fishing in. This led into a great conversation about how targeting these species can give our native fish a better chance of survival and harvest fish that can make a great meal at the same time. Kottman was extremely knowledgeable and his passion for the topic really shows. It was great having him on, and we hope everyone learned something. This month the guys sit down with a friend of Trevor's who absolutely loves extremely long endurance activities, Andé Wegner. Andé and Trevor met a decade or more ago when they were both deep into the obstacle racing scene, so it was great to talk with her again. After we all catch up, we start with how Andé was introduced to the outdoors and her status as a Gen X latchkey kid, got an overview of her most recent event, the 310 mi Long Voyage at the Garmin Gravel Worlds, she off-handedly mentions she completed the Triple Anvil Ultra Distance Triathlon. We then circle back to why she prefers ultra distance events over what people would consider normal; we expound on how awesome training at night can be and go over how someone like Andé graduated from normal distance races to the extremely long distance events she does now. We then move onto Andé's experience as one of the few women competing in these events (Here's a hint, it's been a positive experience), and she gives some tips for anyone that is interested in participating in ultra distance events. Having covered the endurance events pretty well, we pivot to pet talk since Andé is a veterinarian, then finish up with Trevor's favorite questions. This was a great conversation and now both Kyle and Trevor are thinking of signing up for some longer distance events. This month we chatted with two members of the Dream Team, a non-profit organization that uses cycling to provide young adults with opportunities to build confidence and set goals which culminates in riding the entirety of RAGBRAI. Jeff Van Genderen is the Executive Director of the Dream and Inez Chavez is a first-year member of the team. After introductions and a quick catch up, we get right into our main topic: everything about the Dream Team. We get a short run down on what the Dream Team is, what their goals are, what their training for RAGBRAI looks like, how they dealt with this year's challenging RAGBRAI, then move into how both of our guests were introduced to the outdoors and then onto the mentorship that the Dream Team provides. We hear about the mentor-mentee relationship from both sides which was great to get a better understanding of the impact that it has for both groups. We then move into Trevor's favorite questions and wrap things up. It was absolutely great having Jeff and Inez on the podcast to hear about the great work and lasting impact that the Dream Team has been doing and continues to do every year. For those that do RAGBRAI next year keep an eye out for the Dream Team and give them a shout from us. A bit more info on the Dream Team Dream Team Des Moines is a non-profit organization in central Iowa that provides young adults with opportunities to build confidence, set goals, and create a healthy lifestyle through mentor-based interactions centered around cycling. In March, a team of 50-60 teenagers start their five month journey to RAGBRAI, a week-long bike ride across Iowa each July. The riders work with caring volunteers to set goals, work hard, and dream big. The bicycle is used as a tool to inspire and motivate young people, encourage lifelong wellness, and build confidence through accomplishment. This month we throw out our normal format and have a panel discussion about RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) with the guys that joined us on that adventure during the last week of July. After a short introduction, we chat about how RAGBRAI stacked up against our expectations, our favorite foods along the route, challenges we faced and our favorite moments throughout the week. Having summed up our personal experiences in RAGBRAI, we moved on to the inclusive behaviors/items we saw while we were there. These varied from the people we met/saw, the range of bicycles (or even people that weren't on bikes) we saw, experiences we had with hearing or vision impaired riders, and a number of other things. This month Trevor sits down with, teacher, athlete, the first transgender person to complete the triple crown of hiking, and a badass who has just recently completed his ~2800 mile TRANSContinental Run across the US from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, FL, Cal "Starburst" Dobbs. Since this episode is sans Kyle, we breezed through the monthly check-in and got right into the main topic. We started out in familiar territory with how Cal was introduced to the outdoors, but quickly moved into how thru hiking didn't come easy to Cal, even though he was previously a collegiate athlete and how hiking the triple crown, although painful, molded them into the confident outdoorsperson he is today. Then Cal gives a quick primer on terminology surrounding gender identity and sexual orientation which flows very naturally into a chat about pronouns and the proper way interact with someone if you don't know their preferred pronouns. With this foundation laid, we talked about Cal's TRANSContinental Run, what it is about, why its important, and how the experience has been up to this point. Since Cal is probably the only guest we'll ever have that has been invited to the White House we talked about his experience there and through the lens of conversations had while there, what he thinks the future for trans people in the US will look like. We then finish the interview portion with Trevor's favorite questions and wrap everything up. Cal was an absolute delight to have on and to talk with about these very important issues. This month Kyle and Trevor sit down with, former park ranger with the City of Albuquerque Open Spaces, Zach Darden! We start with our normal catch up and get to know our guest then jump into our main topic. We start out with how Zach was introduced to the outdoors, how he became a park ranger, his role and responsibilities as a ranger, the best and worst things about being a park ranger, and some of his favorite memories from his time in that role. We take a short detour to talk about living and building off grid, then talk about how important representation of minority groups in the outdoors is, and bring it home with Trevor's favorite questions. Zach is an amazing example of a great role model for folks in the outdoors and we are so happy we got to sit down and have a chat with him. This month Kyle and Trevor sit down with triple crowner, backpacking guide, and adventure travel planner, Joseph "Mr. Overhill" Gonzalez! After not really talking to each other in 2 months, the guys catch up and get to know our guest then jump into our main topic. We start out with how Joe was introduced to the outdoors, then get right to Adventure Travel with topics such as defining adventure travel, how to become a guide and what skills are important to have, what counts as a visit to a place, tips and tricks to planning an adventure travel trip, how to find a quality guide for a trip, ecotourism and ensuring your visit to an area isn't having a negative effect on the people that live where you are recreating, and how to be mindful that many places we recreate on were at one point stolen from indigenous people. We then take a side trip into mushroom foraging and really geek out for a bit on how cool it is that you can just go out into the wilderness and find things to eat the wrap things up with Trevor's favorite questions. This month Trevor sits down with Canoe and Kayaking guide, father, outdoor educator, and #snelfie extraordinaire, Matt May. Kyle couldn't make it this month so the checkup portion of the show is rather short but we get right into the fun stuff and start talking about the Bayou! The guide service Matt works for is Canoe and Trail Adventures in the Covington/Mandeville area of Southern Louisiana and they do tours that are a bit different from the stereotypical fan boat tours that people associate with the New Orleans area. Instead their tours are slower human powered tours on kayaks and canoes and guides like Matt provide "edu-tainment" for the guests and in our opinion, allow guests to have a more fulfilling southern Louisiana experience. Some topics we hit on were Matt telling us how he was introduced to the outdoors, we give some background info about the bayou and the creatures that live there, what goes into a good #snelfie, the day camp that Canoe and Trail Adventures is puts on during the summer, how summer camps like this are a great way to introduce kids to the outdoors, then do Trevor's favorite questions and do the normal wrap up. Matt was super fun to interview and the joy he gets talking about the outdoors and how he gets to experience it through others eyes on a daily basis was absolutely infectious. Links to Check out! This month the guys sit down with climber, caver, mom of twins, ski instructor, realtor, and entrepreneur (among other things), Bree Jameson. After a short introduction and our catch up, we dive right into how Bree was introduced to the outdoors by her father as a child and how she rediscovered her need for it after being diagnosed with treatment resistant depression. From that point on she delved head first into the outdoors, going above and beyond to find a accepting space for herself and her partner. Our main topic was Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and BELONGING (DEIB) in the outdoors. We talk about how important belonging is to DEI efforts and how creating belonging and inclusion in outdoor spaces is actually something that should be started before people invite others into the outdoors. This relates to the equity aspect of DEIB because everyone doesn't need the exact same thing to be comfortable and feel that they belong in the outdoors or really any setting. Bree introduced us to the great work that the Access Fund has been doing to create opportunities for people that have historically been left out of climbing route development in Texas and other places in the US. Through that initiative Bree became the first woman of color to bolt and climb a first ascent in Texas which was captured in a film titled, J.E.D.I. Training which should be publicly available soon. This was a great episode and it really gave us a better grasp on what we can do to make the outdoors a more inclusive place for everyone. You are all in for a treat this month. We sit down and have a chat with long distance hiker, trail builder/maintainer, wildland firefighter, skateboarder, gravel biker, and many other thing-er, Matt "Pretzel" Mason. After our normal catch up, we get into how Matt was introduced to the outdoors by family friends then quickly touch on his long distance hiking before getting into how he has been giving back to the outdoors and the people in them by building/maintaining trail and fighting wildland fires. Starting with trail work, we talk about what building vs maintaining trail actually entails, how trail maintenance is an extremely important albeit underappreciated activity, and how everyone should volunteer to do trail work at least once in their lives. As Matt's employment evolved from being on trail crews to fighting wildfires, so does our conversation. We talk about how he made the jump from to wildland firefighting, what you do when you are on the ground fighting a wildfire, different jobs he has had within wildland firefighting, what those jobs entailed, how you even get one of those jobs, and the current benefits/treatment of wildland firefighters. Matt is extremely passionate on this last subject and I won't spoil it here but in short there have been some small steps in the right direction but there is still a long way to go before the people risking their lives to fight the ever increasing number of wildland fires in the west are compensated fairly and taken care of afterwards. We close out the interview on a lighter note with Trevor's favorite questions and the normal wrap-up items. We had a ton of fun on this one with Matt and we know you will all enjoy it as well. Our guest this month is a long distance kayaker, long distance hiker, co-host of The Trail Show, and a lawyer focused on environmental law, Daniel "Out of Order" Alvarez. After a short introduction and our normal catch up (including a short tangent about EV adoption) we jump head first into Daniel's impressively long kayaking trip from the northernmost point in Minnesota (Northwest Angle) to Key West and then back again by a different route. We talk about the route itself, logistical challenges, how much history he was able to experience on the trip, a few of the wildest experiences he had, and basically answering a bunch of questions to calm some of Trevor's fears about doing a long paddling trip. After that we talk a bit about how his outdoor experience has been effected by his father being an immigrant from Cuba. As always we wrapped up the episode with Trevor's favorite questions in which Daniel made some great points which can be summed up by the phrase "Protect the places that you love". Our guest this month is a photographer, long distance hiker, and all around cool human being, Tommy Corey aka Twerk. After an introduction and our normal catch up, we talk about how he got into photography, his favorite cameras, and then we dive deep into his latest project, All Humans Outside. In this project Tommy will be taking photos of 100 humans from all sections of the outdoors (sports, conservation, recreation, etc.) and all different backgrounds with a special focus on people that aren't stereotypically represented in the outdoors and encapsulating their stories in an upcoming photobook. This is a momentous undertaking and Tommy gives us an inside look on how this project came together and what we can expect in the final product. Since the book is about how people interact with the outdoors and how it effects them, we ask Tommy about how it has effected him. We then talk about Tommy's experience being an LGBTQ person on the PCT, how he thinks we could increase diversity and inclusion in the outdoors, and have a serious but important discussion about suicidal thoughts, depression, and how Tommy has dealt with them in the past. In this months episode, the guys set down with Evan Thibaud. After introducing our guest and catching up on what we've been up to the last month, we eventually get into our main topic. Fear and how we and others deal with it. We talk about how fear is a very central part of Thibaud's life and the activities he partakes in. We were only able to hit on a small fraction of everything that is Thibaud, but we chat about world travel, sailing, hang gliding, starting your own business, keeping a growth mindset in everything you do, the types of fear and then cap the episode off with an epic story of ice climbing in Labrador, Canada. You are all going to love this one. Check it out! Follow Thibaud on Instagram: @e.vandownbytheriver We need a logo for the podcast! This month the guys sit down with the one, the only, Stan Fowler to talk about all things cycling! We hit on how Stan got into cycling after college, how many bikes he truly owns (and how to make it seem like you have fewer), why Trevor is terrified to cycle on the road, some great Instagram follows showing diversity in the cycling community, how everything would be better if all drivers had been on a bicycle even a little bit in their adult life, and a number of other topics. Stan's excitement for the sport really comes through on this one and it is contagious! We learned a ton, talked about the stereotypes surrounding rafting, how to get more women into the sport, the importance of using a guide when on whitewater, and just got to enjoy how much Alex loves the sport. Be careful, you are going to want to go on a rafting trip after this one!
