Dr. Ratey is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Ratey has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books in 17 languages, including the groundbreaking ADHD “Driven to Distraction” series with Dr. Edward (Ned) Hallowell, MD. With the publication of “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain,” Dr. Ratey established himself as one of the world's foremost authorities on the brain-fitness connection. Jeff Granrud, the NREA's 2025 Teacher of the Year, traces his path to rural math teaching to a timely scholarship nudge from a professor during a tough first year of college, then a formative student-teaching experience under North Dakota Teacher of the Year Fred Strand. Early confidence gave way to a student-driven approach as he adapted to how learners were doing math, listened to “unsung heroes” asking for more challenging courses, and focused on making the subject exciting, whether students love it or hate it. He describes the double-edged nature of technology in rural schools. It lets him share notes and videos easily, but it also siphons students into external online college courses instead of those offered in-house. Cohorts feel familiar across decades, yet more students now insist on being heard, including quiet ones who communicate in unconventional ways. He works to give them a voice. Granrud stays rural because it is home and because he values knowing every student in a high school surrounded by corn and bean fields. His advice to new rural teachers is to immerse themselves in the community, from throwing hay in 105-degree barns to understanding harvest schedules that pull students from class, because those ties reveal the culture and shape classroom relationships. As Teacher of the Year, his platform is firm and straightforward. Make connections with students through small, authentic moments, like painting school walls alongside art classes or wearing math pajamas during homecoming, because conversations outside the desk row change everything. Asked for a single wish, he splits the difference between tools and perception. Graphing calculators for every math teacher would be great, but the bigger wish is public recognition that teaching is not a nine-month, 7:15 to 3:15 job. Summers include graduate coursework and constant reflection aimed at sharpening timing, phrasing, and practice, ensuring that students and schools keep getting better. Guest Bio Jeff Granrud is a dedicated mathematics educator with nearly three decades of teaching experience at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Schools. A 1996 graduate of Mayville State University, Jeff went on to earn his Master of Arts in Education in 2003, further strengthening his expertise and commitment to student success. Over his 28 years at HLWW, he has built a reputation for engaging instruction, a supportive classroom environment, and a commitment to fostering both academic and personal growth in his students. Jeff's excellence in education has been recognized through multiple awards, including the 2002 Leadership in Educational Excellence Award, the 2020 HLWW District Teacher of the Year honor, and the 2024 MREA Educator of Excellence Award. These recognitions highlight his dedication not only to his students but also to the broader educational community. Beyond the classroom, Jeff is an outdoor enthusiast who finds joy in sharing those passions with others. For more than a decade, he has led the Joe Woitalla Memorial Fishing Expo, helping take over 1,000 fourth graders fishing and inspiring a love for the outdoors. He also serves as a Minnesota DNR Hunter Safety Instructor and has coached high school sports for the past 27 years. In addition, he served 11 years with the Howard Lake Fire and Ambulance Departments, reflecting his deep commitment to service, mentorship, and leadership within his rural community.

Judi Uttal is president of the Orange County Asperger's Support Group, a nonprofit organization improving the quality of life for individuals and families dealing with high-functioning autism. She is a member of several organizations, all working to support the neurodiverse community. In 2022, Judi founded the Autism in Entertainment Workgroup to help support inclusion in the entertainment industry. She is the mother of a 33-year-old son who was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. Dr. Sasha Zeedyk is an Associate Professor at California State University in Fullerton. Her research is mainly focused on the social and behavior skills of youth with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities across the course of development. She is interested in understanding how behavior problems and social skills relate to social, mental health, and academic outcomes for these youth, as well as how these skills impact their parents' psychological well-being. Recently, she has begun to study postsecondary outcomes for youth with ASD who attend college.

Because power companies have the legal responsibility to respond to RFI issues caused by their system, their lineworkers can become trained in RFI troubleshooting to perform these investigations properly.  As a first response troubleman for his utility, Jon responds to power outages, electrical emergencies, public safety concerns and customer needs. At one point during his career, he was offered the opportunity to work as an RFI responder, and in this role, he has had the opportunity to learn and evolve. Meet Amaan, the 21 year old visionary behind the disruptive jewellery brand Basliq. Today's episode focuses on the music of harpist, singer and composer Sophia Dussek. It is partly music history, partly harp history and partly harp technique. But it's really about connection. I want to help you feel a connection to our roots, to some of the musical and harp traditions that aren't merely history, but are part of the fabric of our daily harp playing.  There's an African proverb that says,”Walk like you have 3000 ancestors walking behind you.” We harpists so often feel that we're all alone on our journey. The truth is that we are only the newest leaves on a tree with many other branches full of other leaves, a tree whose roots were formed long ago. Every time we play, we are continuing the traditions of those harpists, so it makes sense to learn a little bit about them. The things we learn about our roots can help us connect to the music we are learning today in a deeper way. That's why I chose “connection” as the fifth of the five growth areas I identified in my book, Kaleidoscope Practice: Focus, Finish and Play the Way You've Always Wanted. When you take time, even occasionally, to enrich and enlarge your musical experience that is apart from your playing, you bring more understanding and dimension to everything you play. And in today's podcast, I will help you make those connections between the music of 200 years ago and the music that you're playing now. So today our musical “way back machine” will take us to the turn of the nineteenth century when harp playing had yet to be eclipsed in the drawing room by the piano. Picture any screen adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” you've ever seen, and you will have the right atmosphere. In fact, our heroine for today, Sophia Corri Dussek, was born in the same year as the author Jane Austen. So put on your best muslin frock and we'll get going.
