For the past 8 years Indiana aka "Drive by Dildo" has been focused on bikepack racing. He's got a laundry list of accomplishments to his name. Including being a Triple Crown Challenge finisher. He's one of only 23 people in the world to have accomplished this feat. I met him in 2018 when we were both participating in the GranGravel 500 and he was the first (and only to-date) to Yo-Yo the East Texas Showdown in 2022. Since the age of 6 he's dreamed of traveling the world. Once he discovered bikepacking he soon decided he wanted to fulfill the dreams of his 6 y/o self by cycling around the world. Over the past 8 years he's been dreaming, scheming, planning, and selling everything he wouldn't need to take on his bike. In May of 2024 Indy's planning and preparing was done, now it was time to ride his damn bike around the world. He set out on this adventure starting in Deadhorse, Alaska on the Dalton Highway. Now, almost a year later I catch up with him in La Paz, Mexico on a rest day. Indy is living a dream of mine, to one day live on my bike and see the world. It was so great to see my old friend again and get to hear more about the journey that I've been living vicariously through him online. Tune in to today's episode to hear about how and why Indy choose to live on his bike and travel the world and how his trip has been going so far! Want to bike down the Pacific Coast or through Patagonia? Then listen to guest Laura Buchan share her experiences of doing just that. Laura's first experience of bike touring was taken in Taiwan - on an unlikely trip on a folding bike. She was hooked and since then she has toured extensively on solo trips from Vancouver to the Mexican border, as well as the rugged terrains of Chile and Argentina. Laura faced numerous challenges during these journey's - her bike tour down the Pacific Coast was meant to be undertaken as a team of two, but just a month before setting off her friend had to pull out, leaving solo to take it on solo. Then grim weather during her tour of Patagonia made for a challenging time, but Laura's resilience and the kindness of strangers shone through her narratives.Laura also shares some awe-inspiring moments in Torres del Paine National Park, and her overall reflections on human connection, confidence-building, and overcoming adversityFollow Laura on Instagram - @Laura_Is_On_Earth or via her website - Lauraisonearth.comClick to send me a text message and let me know what you think of the showSupport the Show.Enjoying Seek Travel Ride? Have you ever thought of experiencing the world on two wheels? Well in this episode I interview Scott Sharick, who is currently doing exactly that. Scott moved to Cambodia from the US, to become as he calls it - financially poor and experientially rich. However, not long after making that move he would suffer a stroke. It was during his very first cycle ride during his rehabilitation, that the thought of cycling the world came to Scott and he has making his way around the world on his bicycle ever since. So it is the Strokes to Spokes Bike Tour began, and Scott has now cycled through much of Asia, across Australia and is now currently in the US - on a mission to cycle to all the National Parks in the Lower 48 States. Scott is keen to experience as much as possible on his bike tour and has plans to see most of our world on his two wheels. You can follow Scott via his Instagram account - @ScottSharick and also watch his videos on his YouTube Channel - Strokes to Spokes Bicycling Around the World and also via his website: https://www.scottsharickphotography.comSupport the Show.Enjoying Seek Travel Ride? Send me a text message and let me know what you thought of this episode. This is part 2 of my interview with Jude Kriwald and goes into detail on his most recent bicycle adventure through West Africa. Jude spent 3 months touring off the beaten path in West Africa, a tour which came over ten years since his last big adventure where he cycled from England to India. Jude had been transfixed on the notion of what it would be like to be completely in the middle of a jungle in Liberia and this indeed was the best way to find out.He recalled some captivating details from this journey, from camping at the base of a huge waterfall, to spending 7 days deep in the Liberian Jungle - 3 of those totally alone barely able to travel more than 10 kms a day. Guest Wiebke Lühmann's passion for adventure has led her to embark on a staggering 20,000-kilometer cycling journey from Freiburg to Cape Town. During this episode she talks about how embracing the unknown is at the very essence of cycle travel and how she has found her own personal strength in solitude, navigating the diverse and challenging landscapes of Europe and Africa. From sandstorms through the Sahara to navigating challenging border crossings it's clear that this adventure through West Africa is one filled with experiences so vast and with the wet season looming she is readying herself for the adventures still to come. I spoke to Wiebke while she was in Conakry, Guinea, as she makes her way down the West African coastline on a journey which will take over a year to complete. Weibke shared how her previous endurance background has shaped her approach to overcoming obstacles on this adventure. This isn't her first long distance bicycle journey. She previously spent over 7 months travelling through South America, and in 2022 she cycled from Hambug to the North Cape in Norway - a journey which was documented beautifully in the film On her Own. Is island hopping better by bike? On this week's Peak Northwest podcast, we take a bike tour across the San Juan Islands, one of the most scenic destinations in the Pacific Northwest, courtesy of Kristine de Leon, business reporter at The Oregonian/OregonLive. Plenty of people visit the Washington islands, found in the Salish Sea off the coast of Vancouver Island, and while most opt to take their cars, many travelers prefer to tour two wheels. The slower pace allows more time to soak in the beautiful scenery, and offers a more adventurous way to go. Here are some highlights from this week's show: What exactly is bike touring anyway? A more complex trip required a little more planning in advance. Along for the ride: a sweet dog with a complicated name. Some of the best memories from the journey, which stretched across three islands. Subscribe to Peak Northwest on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or anywhere you listen to podcasts. In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have a chance to speak with Claire Pomykala. When I first came across Claire's journey into bike touring, what really stood out for me is that it all happened so quickly. With her first tour quite literally straight out of college, to then embarking on a pretty epic journey across a big chunk of Europe, Claire has really dove headfirst into Bike Touring and its many facets.. After a stint of working the 9 to 5, Claire decided to drop it all and cycle across the USA and is now what she calls FUN-employed. That first trip was done with her good friend and she was hooked, enjoying some of the finest off road trails on her Tour of Aotearoa . Since then Tess has continued touring with a bicycle and we talked about her experiences of cycling from London to Istanbul. The key difference with this big trip was that Tess undertook this one on her own and we talk about what it was like travelling solo through countries, exploring cultures and places on a bike. Tess shared the highs and lows of this trip from a magical few days exploring caves and beaches, to dealing with the stress of having all her possessions and passport stolen whilst in a foreign country. Every once in a while it's nice to look back on where it all came from - on this edition, we explore the evolution of bike touring gear from the beginning of the modern era in the 1970s through today's high tech enhancements to bikepacking and more. Plus, a nod to what the future might hold with new materials and tech to make bicycle adventuring more fun and accessible! Bike Touring in the 1970s Discuss the state of bike touring in the 1970s: Bike touring during this era was gaining popularity as a way to explore the world and embark on long-distance adventures. It was a time when people sought alternative modes of travel and embraced the freedom and simplicity that bike touring offered. Overview of the popular bikes used for touring in that era: Steel-framed touring bicycles were the go-to choice for bike tourers in the 1970s. Brands like Raleigh, Peugeot, and Miyata were known for producing reliable touring bikes. These bikes were designed with longer wheelbases and relaxed geometry to provide stability and comfort during long rides. Introduction to the traditional panniers and racks used for carrying gear: Panniers, typically made of canvas or nylon, were the primary means of carrying gear on bike tours. They were attached to racks mounted on the front and rear of the bicycle. These racks were often heavy and made of steel, adding extra weight to the bike. Highlight the limitations and challenges of the gear available at the time: Bike touring gear in the 1970s had some limitations. The panniers were not as efficient at distributing weight evenly, which could affect bike handling and stability. Additionally, the racks added significant weight to the bike, making climbs and maneuvering more challenging. Share anecdotes and stories from notable bike tourers of the era: Renowned bike tourers of the 1970s Thomas Stevens, who completed the first documented bike trip around the world, Anne Mustoe, who cycled around the globe in the 1980s. Bikecentennial 1976 Technological Advancements in the 1980s and 1990s Technological advancements that impacted bike touring gear in the 1980s and 1990s: During this period, advancements in materials, components, and design significantly influenced bike touring gear, making it more efficient and comfortable. Introduction of lightweight materials such as aluminum and titanium for bike frames and components: Aluminum frames started gaining popularity in the 1980s due to their lighter weight compared to traditional steel frames. Titanium frames, known for their strength and durability, also emerged as a high-end option for bike touring enthusiasts. The emergence of clipless pedals and the impact on efficiency and comfort: Clipless pedals, which allow riders to securely attach their shoes to the pedals, were introduced in the late 1980s. This innovation improved pedaling efficiency and comfort, especially during long rides and climbs, by allowing for a more direct transfer of power. Innovations in camping gear, including lighter tents, sleeping bags, and cooking equipment: Camping gear manufacturers started focusing on lightweight designs in the 1980s and 1990s. Tent materials, such as lightweight nylon and aluminum poles, reduced overall weight while maintaining durability. Sleeping bags with improved insulation and smaller pack sizes became popular, and compact cooking stoves provided efficient meal preparation options. The rise of waterproof materials and improved clothing for inclement weather: Waterproof materials like Gore-Tex became widely available during this era. This allowed for the development of waterproof panniers and cycling apparel, keeping riders dry and comfortable in rainy conditions. Clothing advancements included breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics that enhanced comfort during long rides. The Rise of Bikepacking in the 2000s Explain the concept of bikepacking and its differences from traditional bike touring: Bikepacking is a form of self-supported, off-road bicycle travel that emphasizes lightweight gear and the ability to venture into rugged terrain. Unlike traditional bike touring, which often involves paved roads and larger amounts of gear carried on racks, bikepacking focuses on carrying essential gear in frame bags, seat packs, and handlebar rolls. Introduction to bikepacking-specific gear, such as frame bags, seat packs, and handlebar rolls: Bikepacking gear is designed to optimize weight distribution and stability while navigating off-road terrain. Frame bags attach to the bike's main triangle, seat packs secure under the saddle, and handlebar rolls fasten to the handlebars, providing ample storage space while maintaining a balanced load. The impact of mountain biking and gravel riding on the development of bikepacking gear: The rise of gravel riding in the 2000s plus the influence of mountain biking impacted the development of bikepacking gear. These disciplines demanded lightweight and durable gear that could withstand rough trails and demanding conditions. As a result, bikepacking gear evolved to meet the specific needs of off-road adventurers. Discuss the benefits and advantages of bikepacking gear in terms of weight distribution and off-road capabilities: Bikepacking gear allows for a more balanced weight distribution, as the gear is distributed within the bike's frame rather than on racks. This improves handling and stability, especially on challenging terrain. Bikepacking gear is also typically lighter and more compact, enabling riders to navigate through tight trails and rough conditions. Downside... can't carry as much! Modern Bikepacking Gear and Trends Lightweight and durable materials like Dyneema and Cuben Fiber These materials offer exceptional strength-to-weight ratios, making gear lighter without sacrificing durability. Integration of technology with bikepacking gear For example, GPS navigation devices specifically designed for bikepackers have become popular, allowing for easier route planning and navigation in remote areas. Additionally, solar-powered charging systems have been developed to keep electronic devices powered during extended trips. Battery improvements The emergence of bikepacking-specific clothing and accessories: These items are designed to meet the unique demands of off-road riding, such as moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabrics, specialized bikepacking shoes, and rugged yet lightweight helmets. None of this is new, but the tech is improving and costs for basics are dropping Trends in minimalist bikepacking and ultra-distance races: Discuss the rise of minimalist bikepacking, where riders aim to carry the bare minimum gear for maximum efficiency and speed. Explore the growing popularity of ultra-distance bikepacking races, such as the Tour Divide or the RAM , and how gear choices impact participants' strategies and performance. Future Possibilities and Closing Thoughts What's next? More evolution to bikepacking Will "bike touring" ever go away? Wrap up
In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I finally have the opportunity to learn a bit more about Sofiane Sehili. When I first reached out to Sofiane over a year ago, he told me that he's done a ton of podcasts and that he'd be happy to come on the show, so long as our conversation is on something new. After following Sofiane and his partner's adventure throughout SE Asia this past winter, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to have him share his adventure and talk about bike touring during bikepack racing's off-season. Most people will know Sofiane as a Parisian bike courier turned bikepacker, as a racer that has un unnatural ability to stay up for really long periods of time and of course, as a pretty highly regarded singer. What you may not know is that it all started for Sofiane on a bike trip in SE Asia years earlier. This time around he came back so he could share the experience with his partner. To support the Bike Tour Adventures podcast, follow the links below:https://www.patreon.com/biketouradventures orhttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/biketouradventures Join the RideWithGPS Bikepack Adventures ClubFind them at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sofianeshl/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/sofiane.shlYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@sofianeshlWebsite: https://sofianesehili.com/Find me at…WEBSITEYOUTUBEFACEBOOKINSTAGRAMITUNESShow SponsorsRedshift Sports --> Use code BPA15 to save 15% at checkoutRestrap --> Use code BTAPOD10 to save 10% at checkoutChiru BikesBrockton CycleryPanorama CyclesRaceDay Fuel --> Use code BTA10 to save 10% at checkout
Alenka Vrecek was born at the foot of the Alps in Slovenia, a part of former communist Yugoslavia. She spent her earliest years idolizing the likes of Reinhold Messner and other great alpine climbers. Born with a spirit for adventure, she came to America at 20 years old with a backpack, a pair of skis, and a pocket full of dreams. Her run as one of the top ski instructors in Squaw Valley ended with an accident that left her with a shattered knee and torn ligaments. During her recovery from surgery, she got a cancer diagnosis that would change the course of her life. Barely through her chemo and radiation treatment, Alenka decided that the way to get clarity was to jump on her bicycle and ride solo from her home in Lake Taho to her home in Baja, Mexico via one of the most grueling trails on the planet, the Baja Divide. This is a story about one woman's quest to summit her own personal Everest. I love this episode so much. I rode the Baja Divide shortly after my conversation with Alenka and I have no idea how she did it. Actually, I do. She's Alenka. Listen to the end. It's an amazing conversation with an inspirational woman. Support the show
You know you've got a bike tour coming up this year, so you want to make sure you're ready for it. What are some things to do to make that easier in the bike touring offseason? On this episode, some insight into my plans this offseason plus tips from ACA, REI and other experts! Offseason Training for Bike Touring Covered this a bit in Pedalshift 158 Quick review of training philosophies Train like hell vs. Ride your way to touring shape vs. Somewhere in the middle This winter I'm going to try to do a few things in prep for my winter tour (preview coming next episode!) Goal 1 - lose 10 pounds from 1/1 to day 1 of tour (stretch goal 12) Goal 2 - Train a minimum of 30 minutes per day 3 days/week (indoor or outdoor) Goal 3 - Plan and begin upper body and/or circuit training My shifting philosophy on training - easier to just jump on the bike when you're younger and fitter! Other/more aggressive philosophies: biketours.com - riding average daily distance several times per week well in advance of the tour (IMO this is total overkill) ACA - Focus on time in the saddle first, seek hills, build endurance, ride with weight (VERY smart) REI - sample training week with fantastic exercise routines, with focus on flexibility. Much more in the train like hell philosophy but excellent things to consider adding to a "somewhere in the middle" routine.
A new year means new bike touring goals! On this episode I share my goals for 2023 including health and fitness, the kinds and number of tours and more. Bike Touring Goals for 2023 Health/Fitness Drop the weight Weigh in at least every other day all year (unless traveling) and set a back on the wagon number Fitness center plan Dry January Feb Touring 5 multi day tours in 2023 At least one 7+ day tour At least one fully new-to-me trail or route Cross a new state by bike Whacky things A heavily transit aided tour A microcamper aided tour
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Kevin Conley. Kevin is a thru-hiker, wildland firefighter, and the author of Above the Ashes, a memoir about battling mental illness during a 3,500 mile bike ride from California to Florida with his dog. Kevin shares the history of his troubled upbringing- and how this eventually lead to his discovering the Appalachian Trail, and consequently his infatuation with thru-hiking. Kevin goes in-depth about the life of a wildland firefighter, how his crippling panic attacks nearly lead to his demise, and his spirit of giving back and bettering the community around him. This is a really deep, honest, and at times dark conversation- and we'd like to offer a trigger warning to listeners that the following interview touches on talks of suicide. We wrap the show with a chat about whether rain pants are necessary for backpacking, the triple crown of fast food breakfasts, if weekend warriors are allowed to use limited AT campsites, an update from MG, and more. A throwback to pre-COVID times with one of the pods from the month of MJ - the very first Pedalshift Bicycle Tour Draft! I explain the rules at the top, and we kind of make it up as we go along, but the essence is each of us chooses pieces of gear or other elements of a bike tour that the other person now cannot choose, and then you get to choose who wins. We sat down with our dear friend, trail runner, boxer, and long-distance bike rider Taylor Edwards. Hear about his epic 3,400-mile, 31-day bike touring journey from Newcastle, California to Denali National Park, Alaska to honor the passing of his best friend and Father and to spread his ashes in his father's favorite place. Taylor's interests in running, backpacking, and cycling especially, were inherited from his father and he always felt the most connected to him when he is out there pushing himself and finding his limits. Seems fitting to tie it all together for their last adventure together. In this episode of the Bike Tour Adventures podcast, I have a chance to talk with Sheelagh Daly. Working in the Toronto bike industry, being an avid bike traveller, nutritionist and YouTube content creator, it was great to sit back and hear her story. Throughout this talk, I learned how Sheelagh jumped head-first into touring by cycling from Scotland to Croatia. We also talked about cycling nutrition, not just for traditional touring, but also bikepacking and bikepack racing. Finally, we touched on what it's like working in the cycling industry. Whitney Washington is a 31-year-old storyteller and worldwide bike adventurer. In 2021 she rode across the United States. This month she begins a new trip from Alaska to Argentina. Whitney grew up in a military family and moved around a lot. She discovered adventure with her mother on car trips to explore their new surroundings. She also enjoyed watching action sport films and stories about exploration and envisioning herself within those experiences. But, being fat was always the reason why she felt she could never achieve such ambitions. In college she attended an event for suicide prevention and learned about mental health and suicide related deaths. During that time she stumbled upon video editing, which ignited her imagination and showed her how she could help. She believed her best way of contributing was showing people that their life, story and dreams mattered. She quickly realized that she needed to show that to herself as well, which led her on this journey of self-understanding. In this episode of the Bike Tour Adventures I have the chance to speak with Liz Pomeroy, an Irish-Canadian artist that goes by the stage name 0Stella. The "0" in her name symbolizes her advocacy for zero-waste. When venue doors locked down in 2020 it got her thinking: I'm 0Stella. I stand for sustainability, zero waste. I tour all the time. I can do this better. So she committed to touring across Canada on a bicycle, by herself. A 2022 cycling bard. There is no other way she'd rather tour right now. So she's hitting the road this spring to bring live music and stories back to you, to your garden, to your acreage, to your driveway. Four and a half months across almost 7,000 kilometres. When I first came across an article that detailed what 0Stella was planning to do, I immediately knew I wanted to get her on the show to share her story with us.
