Show Notes: Laurie's Links: @laurie_wattclimbs https://linktr.ee/Laurie_Watt https://www.mooneymountainguides.com/ Episode Intro: Dear guests of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, Happy Wednesday! This is your host, Ting Ting, from Las Vegas. On the first episode of the new year, 2025, we have Laurie Watt as our guest. Laurie has just been awarded the “Best Guide of the Year” by the AMGA. Laurie fell in love with hiking and skiing in the mountains as a kid, but it wasn't until she had sent her kids off to college that she was able to fully embrace mountain life. While raising her family, she also cultivated a 32-year career in physical therapy. In 2006, she moved to Switzerland with her family for her husband's job. Living in the Alps quickly reminded Laurie of her love for adventuring in the mountains. After returning to the States in 2011, she expanded her skill set to rock and ice climbing. Once the kids were off to college, Laurie decided to make a major career change and committed to becoming a guide. Through training, mentorship, and many days out, she is progressing through the American Mountain Guides Association's rock, ice, and alpine disciplines. Laurie works full-time as a guide for Mooney Mountain Guides in New Hampshire, guiding rock climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering. In the summers, she travels to the Pacific Northwest and guides on the glaciers of Mt. Baker. She offers women-centered programming in rock, ice, and mountaineering. In addition, Laurie also works as a climbing coach for the Holderness School Climbing Team. In this episode, we dive deep into how Laurie cultivated a great mentorship from the side of a mentee, how she challenged the common narrative on aging and used the life skills she accumulated from being a PT and a mom to enrich guiding, and how she sustained the physically demanding guiding career. Things We Talked about: Came in guiding late around age 50 had been living a “normal” life – college, job, family until the “pivotal” moment to regain the love of the mountains back to the States went straight towards Mt Washington in winter why does Laurie enjoy hardship? when was the seed of becoming a guide planted? what were the biggest doubts back then on career change? what did she need as a mentee? self awareness versus self perception deep discussion on mentorship might be late on the guiding profession but all the experiences accumulated beforehand were still valuable skills Laurie didn't think useful but turned out to be very useful in guiding? how to stay employed as a guide in Northeast taking care of a guide's body making guiding sustainable was guiding the way she thought? what kind of guiding does Laurie do? how did the family react to her career change? the narrative of aging best guide tool: listening

Atop New Hampshire's 6,288-foot Mount Washington, weather observers have studied the "world's worst weather" for decades. The invaluable data from this natural laboratory has shaped modern meteorology and has aided weather prediction, aircraft design, and engineering. Join us as we sit down with former Mount Washington observer (and current WGME Chief Meteorologist) Charlie Lopresti to explore this remarkable peak where future meteorologists find inspiration, weather records are shattered, and nature reveals the raw power of our atmosphere.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We have two incredibly inspiring stories that share a connection involving a Steintrike Wild One trike. First up we talk to John Gunterman. John is a US veteran who was injured in the middle east. He talks about his journey of recovery, how Steintrikes have played a part in it and how he now is dedicated to helping others ride to health. Setting goals is a large part of John's plan and his focus is now on climbing the notoriously difficult Mt. Washington next spring on a Wild One. Where this trike will come from takes us to our second story...Having set their own personal goal of promoting solar power and sustainability around the world, Megan and Polo created "The Green Journey". This young couple (an American woman and Frenchman) set out from Berkeley, California this summer on two electrified solar powered Steintrikes. They were attempting to become the first solar powered trikes to cross America. Along the way they met amazing people and shared their ideas on how to make the world a better place.00:00:00 Intro00:00:50 What's on Today's Show00:02:03 Panel Introduction00:04:00 Sponsor Introduction00:06:15 Honza with the Recumbent News00:13:20 US Vet to Climb Mt. In Episode 49 of the Virtual Velo Podcast, Chris and Emma welcome Virginia's Blue Ridge TWENTY24's Kristen Kulchinsky and Coach Josh Lipka. The reigning US National Cycling Esports Champion is on a barnstorming campaign in her first year as a real world cyclist, crushing the course record on every hill climb she entered, including an epic victory atop the toughest hill climb in the US, if not the world. Kristen shares the dramatic account as she conquered the 22% pitches of Mt. Washington's upper slopes with a puncture and muscle cramps to win its 51st edition alongside Team Saris' Cameron Cogburn. Her Coach, Josh Lipka, shares his insight into balancing the physiological demands of multiple disciplines and what it will take for his rider to make it to the 2024 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships live final in Abu Dhabi and keep form for the upcoming Zwift World Series and Zwift Games. They also delve into the recent announcement that supertri E has partnered with MyWhoosh and discuss why this partnership could be more impactful than the UCI's involvement. Additionally, they shine a spotlight on the federations that fully support cycling esports, those that don't, and the one that is prohibiting athletes from participating. Don't miss out on the unique opportunity to delve even deeper into the intriguing topics discussed in this episode. https://slasrpodcast.com/ SLASRPodcast@gmail.com This week we have a follow up on Episode 154 where we covered a March 1983 fatality on Mount Washington where 23 year old Ken Hokenson lost his life and his hiking partner, Ali Kashkooli was rescued. At the time we covered the story we used the details provided in the Summer 1984 Appalachia Journal. The writer of that article and the rescuer who first found Ken and later helped rescue Ali is Doug Teschner. Doug was told about our segment and was kind enough to do a follow up interview with us so definitely stick around for this segment because Doug has a lot of interesting background on that event and we really get into what the White Mountains were like back then. Later in the show our friends Scott and Addie sit down to talk about the Loon Echo Land Trust which is a non-profit organization that conserves, protects, and maintains many of the trails and land in the Lakes Region of Maine. Scott and Addie are overseeing a trail race series that helps support the trust so we will talk about those races, learn about some of the Loon Echo hiking areas and talk about trail running in the Whites. All this plus Falling Waters reroute, powered hiking pants, and recent hikes on Quincy Bogs, and Middle Mountain. Last weekend, we went up to Mt. Washington to attempt to climb it for the 4th year in a row. Our crew has grown up to 14 men, ALL who want to challenge themselves. Is it what I felt like doing? Of course not, it would be so much easier to have a lazy Saturday at home (what's that like???). As usual, there were many lessons learned, many insights gained. When you put yourself into a corner, where it feels like you are up against the world's heavy weight champ, your mind has no other option but to go inward. It's a meditative experience, any type of serious challenge. That's the beauty of it.

This month the guys sat down with one of Kyle's adventure buddies, Javier Sorto. After our normal quick catch up, we jump right into our main topic, all about summitting Mt. Washington in the Winter! Javier leads a group up the mountain every New Years and this year, Kyle and his girlfriend were part of the group. We chat about Mt. Washington, the trip itself, the gear required, how a winter ascent of Washington differs from one in the summer, the importance of safety in the mountains in the winter, and that really with enough preparation, this kind of endeavor is more achievable than one might expect at first glance. We round out the conversation with Trevor's favorite questions then bring it on home. In a world where timing is everything, we often hear about being at the "wrong place, at the wrong time", but as search and rescue volunteer Pam Bales hiked Mt Washington one fall afternoon, the power of being in the right place at the right time was revealed. Torrey dives into the changing nature of victim crimes involving carjacking and mugging of innocent people, including healthcare workers at the Mt. Washington Pediatric hospital. Things get a little heated as Torrey pushes back against claims that things aren't so bad in the city. Plus a 79-year-old Army Veteran shares his story of having his vehicle that he worked so hard for, stolen. Also, Torrey talks with Shelley Wynter, an Atlanta talk show host, about the challenges in Baltimore vs. the challenges in Atlanta.
Howie shares the latest story about an electric vehicle fire, unfortunately not a sparse subject these days. The Democrats still want to mandate all-electric automobiles by 2030, a year approaching rather quickly. Tune in for some bumbling Brandon audio clips, too!

We've gotten to some hearty chapters in Anne Lamott's book Bird by Bird. First up is plot, which “grows out of characters.” We discuss what this means and if it's applicable to genre writing. Then we turn to dialog, and how you distill intent from the rambling conversation of what people say while maintaining their unique voice. Putting our writing chops to the test, Renee took a hilarious 3000 word monolog by the Afternoona Delightpodcast ladies and condensed it down to 600. Definitely worth a listen before you go hiking to the top of Mt Washington.Want to hear more of our exercise workshop? 4 years ago, climbing Mt. Washington was not on my radar, at ALL! I had driven it a few times on vacation, which was terrifying because of my lizard brain response to heights. I'm talking like palms sweating and cold sweat on my brow. So, to imagine that I have attempted to climb it the past 3 years is something else. Each time, I get a PhD in human psychology. In today's episode, I go over 3 lessons learned from this 3rd time up the Mount. In short: -The social aspect of eating and bonding -Making a life or death decision in an instant -Downloading direct knowledge from the Universe and God You'll have to listen to the episode to find out what I learned in more depth. And while you're over there, please don't forget to subscribe and leave a review!
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined once again by Quadzilla. We of course go deep on his calendar year triple crown from last year, getting a play-by-play of his standout highlights, lowlights, and everything in between from his epic 8,000-mile adventure. Much like Quadzilla's first appearance, this one is full of sage advice for on trail and off, including how he handles isolationism, dealing with the doldrums, and the importance of staying present. This one of course does not disappoint. We wrap the show with the Triple Crown of previously held backpacking convictions you've changed your mind on, some news on Mt Washington's recent -108 degree day, and a new stupid thing of the week. Today we are both getting the benefit of some amazing connections I made at the recent Maine Outdoor Economy Summit hosted by the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation and Maine Outdoor Brands. It was a fantastic event, and I finally got the opportunity to meet (in person!) several of the women I've talked to for this pod in the past, which was so, so awesome! I also got connected to some new friends, thanks to the event, including today's guest, Jaimie Crawford.Jaimie has her own freelance marketing agency called PRESSED, through which she is doing a ton of great branding and promotional work for the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce. One of her pet projects this year has been the Hire a Guide initiative, which profiles local outdoor guides on the chamber website and encourages visitors to maximize their engagement with the local expertise and economy. We're going to dive into all of this today, and along the way, Jaimie drops a ton of great tips that anyone who's building a business or brand, or trying to engage with new people or a new audience, will find extremely valuable.Talking with people like Jaimie gets me all fired up and excited for the future of the outdoor economy in northern New England! In Episode 266, Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger explore the haunted Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. Built in the White Mountains in 1900 by Joseph Stickney, he didn't live long enough to get much use out of the hotel. His widow, Princess Carolyn inherited the hotel and made a reputation for throwing lavish parties and always being the best dressed. In 1944, the hotel was home to a huge international conference that would give rise to the IMF, the World Bank, and conspiracy theories that suggest maybe darker forces infiltrated those meetings.

In this podcast, we talk with John Flemming, who created the High Desert Spiral sculpture located at the intersection of Simpson and Mt Washington just at the entrance to Broken Top in Bend, Oregon. We hear about his inspiration and some of the trials and tribulations of building the tallest sculpture in Bend at 39 feet. “There is something universal about spirals,” says the artist. “In the high desert, we find geological examples of lava cooling into spirals.” He also referenced the way traffic spirals around the roundabout in the Archimedean spiral, which features 60 steel blades that move in the wind. Note the inside of the blades are painted a bright yellow-orange, capturing “the glow you might find inside a volcano or lava flow.” This podcast is supported in part by a grant from the Bend Cultural Tourism Fund. “We'll have a big place on a mountain”, is what Swami Yogananda told one of his students in Boston, three months before moving to Los Angeles and miraculously establishing the Self Realization Fellowship headquarters on Mt. Washington. We conduct a deep dive on the background stories, the spiritual and the financial aspects of life in the early stages of the famous ashram. Our guest Christine (Mike's sister) has been a devotee all her life shares her unique experiences at "Mother Center". -------------- 0:00 Meet Christine; 8:19 Summary of minute; 9:40 Mt. Washington, a brief history; 12:40 Making the trip to see Mother Center; 10:31 Divine guidance; 27:57 Fund raising and legal troubles; 39:29 The Arjuna of our times; 42:39 Easter Sunrise Service and the vibrations surrounding the premises; 55:50 Getting to Mt, Washington in 1925; 59:45 Letter from Sri Yukteswar. -------------- The Easter sunrise service conducted at the time the property was purchased was likely similar to those he delivered on subsequent occasions, such as this Easter Message published in Inner Culture magazine in April, 1940: As Christ resurrected His consciousness from beneath the sepulcher of bodily limitations, so must thou learn to resurrect thy mind from beneath the tomb of material desires. Resurrect thy thoughts by meditation from body confinement to the consciousness of omnipresence. Resurrect thy divine love from beneath the sod of mundane human attachment. Resurrect thy calmness from beneath the soil of restlessness. Resurrect thy wisdom from beneath the earthliness of ignorance. Resurrect thy love for all from the limited love for family, society and country. Resurrect thy soul from the imprisonment of body consciousness and unite it with omniscient Spirit through the developed consciousness of Christ.

Sean Tucker is Syracuse's only good player and his postgame tweets are WEIRD. Can Pitt slow him down enough to secure the program's first 10-win regular season in 40 years? Please…. Hail, Loyal Sons of Pittsburgh.
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
When I went out to hike the AT in 2014, I met a breed of woman I'd hardly known existed. These were strong-willed, fiercely independent young women, many of who were vastly more impressive than a lot of the men I met out there. It has been a theme of the trail for this past decade. Women are hitting the AT, and other trails, with little or no backpacking experience and proving to be more than equal to the task. Rebecca Brackbill turned out to be one of those women this year. She turned up in 2020 with few overnights under her belt, yet, as you listen to her, you'll hear a steely determination to succeed, even though she considered quitting while in Shenandoah, of all places! Rebecca developed a habit of getting her picture taken doing a backbend at various spots on the trail, including one in front of the Katahdin sign, one on Mt Washington's cog railway, and even one on the top of Odie's bus! If you'd like to connect with Rebecca or follow her adventures, check her out on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/brackbill421/ With no Katie to catch up with this week, I brought back a friend of the show, JC Van Etten, or Catmando, to tell us about his observations on forming a tramily on the PCT after his epic experience with his tramily on the AT. Winton Porter's Passin' Though brings real life drama to Mountain Crossings, with a mystery boot. In 2017, Kelly Sanders and Monica Yope met at a tech conference. As the two lone, non-tech creatives in the room, they quickly became friends. As they got to know each other, they discovered their common passion for supporting local makers. Inspired by a shared vision, they realized that the city needed a physical space to showcase the abundance of talent in our region. So, they decided to turn the building that Monica found in Mt. Washington into their first love, Pittsburgh location.Fast forward four years and Kelly and Monica now operate three locations throughout the city of Pittsburgh. Their initial lineup of 40 artisans has grown to over 100, and their stores have also achieved a GOLD Certification from Sustainable Pittsburgh for their work in reducing their carbon footprint. Love, Pittsburgh has become a home base for some of the best artisans in the area, and it has also become a favorite shopping destination for visitors and locals alike. In fact, Kelly and Monica created the name “love, Pittsburgh” to invoke the feeling that everything in their stores is like a gift to us from our beloved city.If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. The purpose of this podcast is to share ideas, inspire action, and build a stronger small business community here in Pittsburgh. We had a nice conversation about rving and it sounded like we waited her appetite for wanderlust. Hi Terry if you're listening. She is suggested us hiking up Brousseau Mtn. Then the rain came in and we had 3 hours to kill before meeting our friends from our home town for dinner, so unfortunately we canceled our dinner plans and headed back up north. The next day we went to Philo Mt. and hiked to the top. The trail was new and in my opinion it was a tab over developed. Lots of stone steps and very wide. Great views of Lake Champlain. Then we hiked down on the Devil's Seat Trail which was more like a hiking trail. Pics of Mt Philo https://www.instagram.com/p/CTkeFfuFvZs/?utm_medium=copy_link From there we visited Shelburne Farm. An interesting place. They gave no history of the farm, which was owned by the Vanderbilt's and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who helped design NY Citys central park. A beautiful barn ! And free to visit. Here are a few pics https://www.instagram.com/p/CTmipC8MZb4/?utm_medium=copy_link The next day we went to Mud Pond Country park. We expected to do 2.5 miles of walking but the map wasn't clear so we ended up doing almost 5 miles But it was nice.https://maps.app.goo.gl/5dChCjcMhX6kMaEo8. We drove to a park and grab the bike and rode on lakefront bike trail up to the causeway it was a total of 14 mi round trip. Here's pics from the causeway https://www.instagram.com/p/CTpKn-bFCEq/?utm_medium=copy_link We had found this causeway Trail a couple years ago and we marked it on our Google maps and we are so glad we did. Here's a video of how we plan our trips:https://youtu.be/m17giRxNVs0 The next day we said goodbye to our wonderful hosts and drove to the Lake Bomoseen KOA in VT. If you watched the video of our route planning you know KOAs are our last choice, but they were doing a promotion of BOGO this weekend. So we figured sure we'll take a free night lol. So we got to site and set up. We did laundry and such. The next day we went to Mt Moosalamoo and did a 5.5 mile beautiful hike. The next morning, we paddled on Lake Bomoseen for an hour or so. The campground had a launch so we took advantage of it. We then went to Randolf, VT. to our next Boondockers Welcome location. We met our really welcoming hosts. They explained that Vermont has the 2nd lowest population of all the states, We then took a ride to the only floating bridge east of the Mississippi. It's located in Brookfield VT. Here are pics of it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CTvX445sao2/?utm_medium=copy_link As we left VT we looked back and saw that we were in Vermont for a week and a half. And out of that time we spent two nights at a campground. And of that we only paid for 1 night. So the cost to us was $54 to stay a week and a half in Vermont. We love boondockers welcome. So we went through our list of stays at boondockers welcome locations over the past 3 years. We have stayed at over 90 locations for a total of almost 200 nights. Unbelievable. We then drove 2 hours south to White Birch campground in Waverly MA.This was a passport from America's day so we got the site for half price. We met our campost and her boyfriend who were wonderful people. We arrived back at our rig and the camphost dropped off a load of firewood. The next day we drove to Greenfield and hiked to The Poet's Seat Tower and Sachems Head. This is a scenic hike that follows a ridge line. We hiked about 5 easy miles, except for a 0.25 mile section that was very steep. Pics: https://www.instagram.com/p/CT0V522gv95/ We then stopped at Pekarski's Sausage in Deerfield, MA. Delicious German meats. https://pekarskis.com/ That evening we went to Northampton walked around this great little city. We stopped in at a place called tunnel bar for a drink. https://www.thetunnelbar.com/ Pics: https://www.instagram.com/p/CT6DQwJs8YH/?utm_medium=copy_link The next day we took a very short ride to a trailhead for the Appalachian Trail. We started and saw a sign saying there was a lean to about 4 MI from the car. So we made that our destination. Here's a video of it and on my Instagram page are more pics of the hike. https://www.instagram.com/p/CT78XXQJsOb/?utm_medium=copy_link The next day, Saturday 9/18/21, we headed west to Cobbleskill, NY. 1888 was a year of extremes across the United States, of course the famed Blizzard of '88 in March in the Northeast brought heavy snow and blinding visibility and hundreds of deaths in the worst March snowstorm in that region since unofficial records began before the Revolutionary War. The wild weather continued and not only in the northeast. It would come to pass that on July 11, 1888 a high amplitude or high wave pattern would establish itself in the upper atmosphere where the Jetstream steers storms and other weather systems. In the western states the jet stream pulled way north into Canada and pumped up high heat and humidity all the way from Mexico. Meanwhile in the East the Jetstream plunged southward toward Georgia and brought record cold and storminess. On July 11, under that western heat, the temperature in Bennet Colorado reached 118 degrees, still listed as a state record. In the East heavy rains on the Monongahela River caused a flash flood as the water rose a whopping 32 feet in less that 24 hours. Meanwhile on the same day, July 11, 1888, along the Presidential range in New Hampshire heavy snow blanked the peaks like Mt Washington and some snow reached all the way down to the base of those mountains. I take my 8 year old boys on a hike on the Appalachian Trail and drive up Mt. Washington in a very sketchy car. Danger/adventure ensue!
On one of their many adventures in New Hampshire, Bridget & Molly explore the tale of the ghostly princess at the Mount Washington Hotel.
Last fall, FasterSkier spoke with former Williams Ski Team member Jordan Fields after his impressive effort on the Presidential Traverse in the White Mountains of Northern New Hampshire. This classic point-to-point route leads travelers over eight summits in roughly 18 miles, including Mt Washington, which clocks in at 6,288 ft as the highest elevation peak in the Northeast. Over the years, many have raced the clock against the storied challenge of traversing the range as fast as possible, and the fastest known time (FKT) has slowly been whittled down from roughly five hours in 2010 into uncharted territory. Stopping his watch at the bottom of Crawford Path 3 hours and 42 minutes after leaving the northern trailhead in Appalachia last September, Fields smashed the previous record by an astounding 22 minutes. “One of the silver linings of COVID was that it maybe left me with a little too much flexibility,” Fields laughed as he discussed the steady stream of impressive days he spent in the mountains this summer.Despite also being fully plugged into a graduate program in Geology at Dartmouth College studying the impact of climate change on the ecology of rivers, he set a new FKT each month beginning in June on the Kinsman Ridge Traverse near Franconia, NH, followed by Mt. Katahdin in northern Maine in July. From there, Fields turned his focus to two other iconic White Mountains routes: the 29 mile Pemigewasset (Pemi) Loop and the 45 mile Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Hut Traverse.Like the Presi Traverse, the Pemi Loop has been a test piece for hardy New England mountain runners, boasting 9,100' of climbing with ample scrambling up and down the rocky granite peaks above tree line. (Jessie Diggins ran this as her “Big Stupid” birthday adventure in early September.) As Fields explains in the interview, his Pemi Loop FKT on August 1st was a bit impromptu. The day started as a scouting mission with a friend, but when he realized at the top of the first major climb 8 miles in that they were on record pace, he decided to leave his friend behind, go for it, and see what happened. Woefully unprepared for a race effort, Fields went on to experience the most epic of bonks. He had packed food that was appropriate for a casual jaunt, but wouldn't sit while chasing a record. Because the route stays high along the ridge line there is only one reliable opportunity to fill water, and it was a 90 degree day, Fields found himself wishing he had packed more than two 500 mL soft flasks. Nevertheless, he made it back to the trailhead in 5 hours and 27 minutes for a new record. Though he feels he can significantly drop the time, he opted not to return to the Pemi Loop this fall and began piecing together the Hut Traverse. For those who have spent a season working as AMC “Hut Croo”, or even perhaps stayed at one of the huts, this pilgrimage likely gives you goosebumps. With records dating back to the 1930's, connecting the eight huts beginning at Carter and finishing at Lonesome Lake has long been a right of passage for Croo and trail stewards in the rich lore of the White Mountains. And get this: the route encompasses the Presidential Traverse, though you get to skip a couple of the peaks, and roughly a third of the Pemi Loop, racking up over 16,000 ft of climbing and ending on a steep climb out of Franconia Notch. Chasing former Greenleaf Croo member Jeff Colt's 2018 record, Fields dropped the time to 10 hours 24 minutes. With the FKT on the Presi Traverse and the Pemi Loop, this also finished out the “Triple Crown” of the Whites, and Fields became the first person to hold all three records simultaneously. During the interview, Fields discussed the role community played throughout his attempts, particularly with the hut traverse. Though he missed out on the baked goods and encouragement normally offered at the huts because of a combination of COVID and seasonal closures, he had the irreplaceable support of family and friends, and beta from the previous record holder.Fields explained that he contacted Colt for advice, sheepishly apologizing that he was trying to best his time. Colt was happy to pass on the torch, saying, “That's what it's all about: a shared history of experience in the mountains.” This phrase stuck with Fields as he put his head down and powered his way through the Whites, encompassing why he enjoys such arduous pastimes. In this conversation, Fields shares a deeper look into his FKT attempts and discusses his perspective on the likely COVID-induced increase in use seen in the White Mountains (and many other mountain regions) this summer. He also talks about his goals for the seasons ahead. Thanks for listening.
I climb the Presidentials and Mt Washington a day after slackpacking 21 miles and 6700 feet of elevation, and I sit down for a conversation with Zach “Free Fall” Tucker who has been northbound on the trail since late February.

1888 was a year of extremes across the United States, of course the famed Blizzard of ’88 in March in the Northeast brought heavy snows and blinding visibility and hundreds of deaths in the worst March snowstorm in that region since unofficial records began before the Revolutionary War. The crazy weather continued and not only in the northeast. It would come to pass that on July 11, 1888 a high amplitude or high wave pattern would establish itself in the high atmosphere where the jet stream steers storms and other weather systems. In the western states the jet stream pulled way north into Canada and pumped up high heat and humidity all the way from Mexico. Meanwhile in the East the jet stream plunged southward toward Georgia and brought record cold and storminess. On July 11, under that western heat, the temperature in Bennett, Colorado reached 118 degrees, still listed as a state record. Dinner with Jim and Nancy Storie There are a lot of crew stories swapped by Mowglis around the campfire and lately on Zoom but few are more widely remembered than the crew race of 1973 when a very small Red Racing crew was pitted against a crew of the biggest boys that most of us had seen in the Den and Panther on the Blue Racing crew. It was the biggest upset that anyone could remember. But as always, the moment that the oar went up the flag pole it was over and the Mowglis brothers gathered arm in arm to sing the Mowglis boating song. Jim Storie was the crew coach that year, his only year at Mowglis. Yet he is fondly remembered to this day and he has very fond memories himself of that summer. Jim came back to New Hampshire that same winter and was a part of the all Mowglis winter assault on Mt Washington. I've put some photos from that trip that Jim had on slides up on the shownotes page at MowglisMemories.blogspot.com . In late January I stopped in Richmond on my cross country trip with my pal Boof the Siberian Husky and visited with Jim and his wife Nancy. We recorded this podcast over dinner before Boof and I hit the road headed home.

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
With four days of glorious weather forecast, we couldn’t wait to get stuck into Franconia Ridge and the Presidential Range, highlighted by summiting Mt Washington. We were entertained in a log cabin, driven down, then back up Mt Washington, and experienced the area exactly how I think it should be experienced. This episode has me at my peak on this trip. Join me again tomorrow as I tell you about my unexpected, yet rapid, decline.

America's oldest summer resort Granted to 4 men from Portsmouth by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1759 Named after General James Wolfe who was victorious in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in the French and Indian War which lasted 15 minutes and he died from three gunshot wounds. The battle turned the tide in the war. (Also 1759) Benning's nephew John Wentworth became governor as well later on and established an estate in Wolfeboro called Kingswood next to what is now Lake Wentworth. During the 19th century the only way to get to Wolfeboro was via the road, i.e. stagecoach or horse. In 1872 a railroad was opened that branched off from “Sanborn's Station” in Wakefield from the Portsmouth, Great Falls and Conway Railroad. The railroad caused tourism to explode. What was a small village became one of the biggest tourist destinations. The rail line ended right at Lake Winnipesaukee where you could board the steamship Mt. Washington owned by another railroad. The Boston & Maine railroad. The Mt Washington still runs and stops in Wolfeboro, Meredith, Weir's Beach and Alton. Bruce has been in one of my favourite parts of the trail; The White Mountains in New Hampshire. As always, he has researched his subject and knew what to expect. Consequently, he has had a tough time that he knew was coming. The weather doesn't always cooperate–and it didn't for Bruce–but the scenery, when you find it, is hard to beat. He even had fairly decent weather as he crossed the second-highest point of the trail, Mt Washington. With the Whites pretty much now behind him, he is looking forward to the last great test before Mt Katahdin; Southern Maine. We had an excellent question this week about thunderstorms from David Braxton, so make sure that you send me your address, David, so that I can get two of Trailtopia's yummy meals sent to you. We hope that you take the opportunity to support our sponsor, Trailtopia, when you consider your next backpacking trip. Go to https://www.trailtopia.com/ to check out their wide variety of meals.
Today I tried something new, using the "Anchor" app to record a story with EJ about our trip to New Hampshire where we climbed Mt. Washington. This was an incredible outdoor adventure that surely kicked off my love for hiking and climbing. If you up for a fun adventure, taking a trip here will certainly be worth your time. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Jack Jones flip-flopped the Appalachian Trail in 2016, sharing part of his time with two previous guests, Kelly Anderson and Edwin Thullen. He found the physicality of the trail to be relatively easy and, with his military training, he carried a very heavy pack. Here he is in Virginia, with the spectacular view from Dragon's Tooth behind him. His journey to the trail came via adoption from China at age eight, and Jack speaks of the dislocation that caused him, yet the trail brought home to him the camaraderie with his fellow travelers. The picture below shows Jack with Kelly and their friend, Simba, on the way up Katahdin. He learned a great deal about diet on the AT and is hoping to use that knowledge in his Arizona Trail and Continental Divide Trail hikes this year (2018). You can see a short video of Jack's journey on YouTube and read his AT blog at his new site, CouchToTrail.com. If you sign up for his newsletter, you'll get over 100 high quality, full resolution photos of the Appalachian Trail. The photo of Jack at the bottom of these notes is of him at Mt Washington. Update 2/19: Jack sent me a couple of other links: Instagram and Reddit. Just click on either. Doctor Lynne returns to the show as Hiker Lynne, with a local Connecticut hike, the Charles Ives Trail her focus. She has shared a great link to a brochure and map for the trail. Just click here. Here she is with her family on the trail. Bruce’s blog is now regularly updated. You can find it at rtkchallenge.com, where you will also be able to hear our podcast and contribute to his fundraising for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. While you’re online, we’d also be delighted if you’d check out Trailtopia.com and consider the wonderful food choices that they have for your next hike.
