It’s one of the hardest — and most important — conversations parents can have: teaching kids about consent. In this episode of the Happy Families Podcast, we break down the powerful lessons from Parental Guidance season 3, episode 2, including insights from consent educator Dan Principe. From why consent conversations can’t wait, to the right age to start, to how to empower kids without shame or fear — we’ll help you get comfortable having uncomfortable conversations, and raise kids who understand respect, boundaries, and healthy relationships. KEY POINTS Why consent education starts “before age two” — and why “early and often” matters. The startling reality: 15–19 year old girls are the largest group of sexual assault victims; 15–19 year old boys are the largest group of perpetrators. Why old-school “guns and shovels” attitudes harm more than they help. The role of ongoing, informal and formal family conversations about tricky topics. The three E’s: Explore, Explain, Empower — the simple framework for any difficult talk. How social media and “sharing” require kids’ consent too — even within the family. The risk of silence: what happens when kids don’t feel safe coming to their parents. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE "We need to get comfortable being uncomfortable — because no young person should feel like their curiosity or desires are shameful." — Dan Principe RESOURCES MENTIONED Dan Principe: Consent educator and speaker (recommended for schools) Federal Government’s Consent Can’t Wait campaign (Justin as ambassador) More parenting resources at: happyfamilies.com.au Watch Parental Guidance seasons 1–3 on 9Now ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS 1. Start the conversation early — even before they understand the words, practice being open and clear.2. Commit to ongoing “early and often” chats — not just one big talk.3. Schedule regular family check-ins to discuss tricky topics.4. Use the three E’s: Explore what they know and feel, Explain what’s important, Empower them to make good decisions.5. Check in on consent within your own family dynamics — ask before sharing kids’ stories or images online.6. Drop the fear-based jokes and attitudes — empower kids with respect and tools, not shame or threats.7. Remind yourself: if they don’t learn it from you, they’ll learn it somewhere else.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

These two former Bachelorettes were long overdue for a chat and luckily, their convo is recorded for all of the Vinos as they catch up on Bachelor Nation, relationships, social media, and what's next. Host of two podcasts, author, attorney, and all-around amazing human being Rachel Lindsay is uncomfortable right now… and that's OK! She explains to KB why she's leaving a long-term gig and the fears that come along with that decision. She also reveals what she hopes is next for her in terms of both her career and her marriage, a relationship she chooses to speak about on her podcast but not often displays through social media. Kaitlyn and Rachel always feel like they need more, but often pausing and taking a step back to reevaluate life is necessary, and they discuss what pausing looks like and what it can bring up. Meet Bruce Raymer, 4x Canadian Champion, 7x National Team member, and the 1999 Ottawa Marathon Champion—where he broke through and ran his PB of 2:22! Bruce traveled the world racing as a pro and later as an elite Masters runner, before retiring at age 42 due to nagging Achilles issues. However, his competitive fire still burned bright and he turned to cycling five years ago, and is now focused on time trialing—and just last weekend earned 3rd place at the Canadian Masters Time Trial Championships! We discussed: -The impact legendary Canadian coach and mentor, Paul Poce, had on his running journey and how that led him to coaching to share his experiences to help runners find their best and give back to the sport that had given him so much. -How his dad introduced him to running and shaped his work ethic, drive, and stay-in-the-fight spirit. -The importance of mindset and how he coaches his athletes to get comfortable being uncomfortable to perform at their best. -Bruce's amazing experiences racing in Japan at Fukuoka, Tokyo, Ekiden, and our mutual love of their incredible passion for our sport. Bruce has had such an inspiring journey! I really enjoyed our convo and I'm grateful for the many lessons and experiences shared—and for Bruce's candor on some personal struggles! In the interview we cover: What living with intention meansWhy meditation is the starting point and how to take the time to listen to yourself and get quietWhy we as women have fear around knowing ourselvesEmbracing having needs and how it actually creates balance in relationshipsWhy rock bottom is beautifulGetting comfortable being uncomfortable allows for uplevels and shifts and tells us how we need to changeWhy speaking our truth can be so uncomfortable and how to embrace itThe different ways men and women may react to you creating a boundaryHow to allow someone to express themselves and not internalize itA beautiful way to receive an apology (it's not “it's ok”)How owning our mistakes and apologizing deepens relationships and develops trust Why denying our hurt is so damaging to relationships and to ourselvesWhy speaking our truth when we are hurt is a beautiful way to be authentic and to feel heardThe times when we need control over the outcome is when we don't have boundariesThe more we practice being uncomfortable the less attached we get to things needing to be a certain way and allow life to flow which allows us to connect rather than attachConnection is when both parties come willingly How giving yourself permission to make your home a reflection of you can be incredibly inspiring and liberatingOur purpose in this life is to get to know ourselves on a deep soul level. Every experience and relationship is leading us deeper into this process and showing us the highest best version of ourselves and who we were always meant to be. Through openness, connection, self reflection and honesty, we can discover so much possibility and continue on that beautiful path of growth and expansion. Ascending from the depths of emotional intensity that is Scorpio season, we emerge renewed and reformed, ready to step boldly into the fire of Sagittarius season that will bring optimism, adaptability, assertiveness, creativity and a go-getter attitude. In Scorpio season, we swam through the murky waters of our subconscious to discover what patterns, mindsets and behaviors were holding us back from personal transformation. There was a particular emphasis on growing pains and having the willingness to persevere, knowing that the only way out is through. Scorpio energy ultimately encourages us to rise like the phoenix from our own ashes, and now that it's Sagittarius season, we can embody that fire of the phoenix and spread our wings to fly in pursuit of what's next. A fire sign, Sagittarius is also a mutable, masculine sign of the zodiac, meaning that there are components of action, flexibility and courage at play over the course of these next couple weeks. Sagittarius is curious, energetic, optimistic, enthusiastic and willing to do anything to achieve what is set out for. Themes of truth, travel and exploration will be prominent during this season, as Sagittarius seeks to broaden horizons and urges us to propel forward. There is a major focus of stepping outside your comfort zone and learning how to be comfortable within the discomfort. That is not to say there will not be a sense of unease in trying new things, accepting where you may have been wrong before when presented with new information, having hard conversations, starting those projects you've been thinking about forever, allowing your mind to change, and making the conscious decision to choose what is best over what placates the ego; however, the energy of Sagittarius season brings our God-given courageousness to the forefront of our hearts therefore allows for progress to be both made and felt. We go from a sense of “What am I going to do?” that we spent Scorpio season drowning in, to “I got this!” and bring the heat in Sagittarius season. In this episode, I talk all about Sagittarius season, what it means to venture beyond your comfort zone, and highlight important astrological aspects that are occurring during this time that will help you understand how to best navigate through this season in your personal life, including a Venus retrograde. If you haven't already, please subscribe to the podcast on whichever platform you listen or watch, and don't forget to leave a 5-star rating and written review - it's so helpful in getting this into more people's ears. Living in a world of risk sums up the life of this week's incredible guest, Jason Van Camp. As a West Point graduate, Jason is anything but faint-hearted in his experience as a decorated Green Beret in the U.S. Special Forces, in his business endeavors, and his dedication in helping other veterans unlock their potential and start their own business. He has authored the book: Deliberate Discomfort: How US Special Forces Overcome Fear and Dare to Win by Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable. Jason's will to win and his heart of service to others makes him an epic model of a successful human being. In this episode you will hear: If you never quit, you never fail. That journey you're on – it's not about trophies – it's about people, and the journeys you take with those people. The worse experience it is for you, the funnier story it is for everybody else. We put ourselves in deliberately uncomfortable situations so we can get out of our comfort zone and grow. My motivation is to collect as many stories as I possibly can. My mindset has shifted from being selfish to being selfless. It's hard to find your purpose. I want to help people, I want to make money, I want to do epic shit. Our non-profit – Warrior Rising – helps veterans start their own business. I'm a life-long student – always wearing my white belt. Go do something. Everyone can be a collaborator. Cooperate and graduate. I turned the military decision-making process into a business model. Choose hard things before hard things choose you.
