The Story of My Dad That Died While Freddo initially shares lighthearted tales of joy and inspiration stemming from a mushroom ceremony, Benji throws a curveball with probing questions about Freddo's relationship with his parents. This unexpected twist leads to a poignant and deeply personal story: Freddo's discovery of his father's lifeless body when he was just 8 years old. Freddo recounts this traumatic scene with an almost robotic detachment, offering a unique perspective on how a child's mind can shield them from the full weight of such tragic circumstances. He vividly describes the event, highlighting his surprising lack of tears or immediate sadness. As the conversation unfolds, Benji's inquiries uncover surprising revelations that suggest Freddo's father's death may not have been as random as it initially seemed. A hand-written note delivered to Freddo after his 18th birthday further complicates the narrative. Together, Freddo and Benji piece together fragments of the past, gradually realising that there may be more to the story than meets the eye. Prepare for an emotional journey as Freddo bravely shares the story of his childhood and how both he and Benji grappled with the loss of their fathers at a young age. Well ladies and gentleman, Benji is back, for one night only, live and in person, regaling us with hilarious stories of van troubles, encounters with police, seizures, and a rather stoic attitude in the face of adversity, despite outright comical events unfolding. His journey to Morzine was not smooth, yet he is here to tell the tale, and it's one you won't want to miss. The boys start out with a dad joke-off - and you can be the judge of who "won" Freddo has started his new job, and is thriving in Customer Service and the office environment. Finally feeling like a team member, the boys ponder how long the novelty will last, and can he remain this chipper all season? All this and a lot more in this special VIDEO episode, we hope you enjoy!
This was a fun episode, Freddo gets a job for the first time since his injury, Benji is grateful for his friends all around the world, we discuss Derren Brown's latest show and the levels of manipulation, the ending of Ozark and why sometimes crime does pay, the magic of healing spinal cords and miraculous recoveries, the danger of wearing Speedos in the pool and fun times seeing your friends take part in a raunchy burlesque show. This is our 40th episode and it starts off with a lot of laughter, Benji recalls tales from his recent holiday where he claims to have surfed the best wave of his life, and gushes over spectacular sunsets and magnificent mullets. Freddo tells a crushing story of trying stand up comedy and failing to make anyone laugh. Freddo reflects on the surprising success stories that have come from his YouTube content, and decides he wants to become a mentor for others with SCI, even tho he admits to being an ableist (?) We discuss what it even means, how social media algorithms reward posts that promote outrage, and if some people overuse use it for engagement. Freddo shares an embarrassing anecdote concerning explosive diarrhea and a friendly stranger at the swimming pool, and Benji fires back an equally funny poo anecdote in this off the cuff episode we recorded rather spontaneously. Benji goes to a wedding looking dapper, but returns with a nasty disease and is grateful for modern medicine. He also welcomes home his friend Matt, who is finally back after his spinal cord injury in Ibiza months ago. If you want to hear Freddo's story of having explosive diarrhea in a wheelchair the link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPGV4q_t3Z8&ab_channel=FreddotheWheelchairGuy Experimenting with another new format of podcasting, without any preparation, we found this to be pretty funny and light hearted but we'd love to know what YOU think, do you prefer us to cover more serious topics, share new ways of thinking, have deeper chats, or do you like this new informal format of just catching up in real time and sharing stories of our lives? In the first solo episode of the podcast, Freddo ponders his identity as the wheelchair guy after another thought provoking dream and realises there are a lot of benefits to having a disability, being part of a community and getting special treatment. After all the things he "hated" about being in a wheelchair, he has grown to love, would he feel invisible without the chair? More importantly, how would YOU feel? We are also experimenting with VIDEO for the first time in this episode, so hopefully you can enjoy the audio and visual experience with added B-Roll. Welcome friends to our 37th episode of the podcast, we discuss dating with a spinal cord injury, Freddo's recent UK trip and unexpected romance. Benji feels gratitude for our friend Matts life, after an unfortunate diving accident left him with a SCI. Benji recounts the events of the day, recalling in detail how it happened, the rescue, psychological trauma and expensive out of pocket hospital expenses. Freddo feels grateful for his own hospital experience after his accident, and how amazing the French healthcare system is. We start the podcast in the usual light hearted jovial way, both grateful for holidays and the ability to travel, before delving into something slightly more serious. Freddo read a book that prompted a new way of thinking that was outside of his usual echo chamber and prompted a lot of research into a sensitive and divisive topic. Benji also researched a lot to attempt to give the subject the balance and delicate attention it deserves. We do clearly state that we are in no way fully informed on the subject matter, but felt that we wanted to discuss it anyway, with an open mind. Listeners are advised to proceed with compassion and understanding, knowing that we are all on a journey together to try to understand the world better. There's beauty in the difference of opinions and world views. We'd like to leave a quote here from the well respected rapper and journalist Akala, which we feel is appropriate: "... it's impossible to be truly objective, you can try to be fair, from within your own biases, from your own culture and conditioning, even your language predisposes you to view the world a particular way, so I am trying to be fair, but I'm conscious that I'm speaking from my life experience, my study of the world, my personal view of the world, my family and my cultural background. If I grew up somewhere else, with a different family and upbringing, it's entirely possible I'd view the world a completely different way. But the more different biases you can hear, the fairer picture you can build up of the overall picture." Another fun episode where we discuss the value of ruthless introspection and the discomfort of being wrong. Freddo makes some observations about the disability community and ponders if some people complain too much. Is the hashtag #disabilitydiscrimination being used to cry wolf? What defines ableism? Is it not better to not be disabled? Benji ponders about life, love and jigsaw puzzles, how they all intertwine in a wonderful metaphor provided by the comedian Daniel Sloss. We discuss compatibility and compromise in relationships and the common challenges we all face. Another podcast with gratitude as the main theme running through it, going full circle in the discussion rounding back nicely to the ultimate secret of contentment. In our first remote podcast, we discuss the Will Smith slap with a slightly different take, we recall the outrage at Ellen coming out as gay 25 years ago and how bizarre it seems nowadays, noting the progression society has made to be more inclusive. Freddo confesses his regret at ending his youtube channel, while Benji is concerned about the rise of the far right in France. Well listeners, this may be the last in person podcast for a while, as Benji prepares to leave Morzine. We discuss how life moves faster as we get older, Freddo talks passionately about the book; Stolen Focus, that has been life changing for him and delve in to discussions involving multitasking vs monotasking, shortening attention spans, flow states and afternoon naps. Benji speaks passionately about the problem with hypernormalisation, due to sensationalist clickbait media headlines, and how empathy has turned to apathy. We will continue the podcast remotely while Benji is in the UK, so don't worry, we'll be back! Until then, love yourselves, and each other ❤️✌️
Benji learns some devastating news, which prompts us to talk about mortality, the best way to live life, and what may or may not lie beyond the curtain of death. We discuss the statistical peak age of attractiveness of both men and women, and what lies in the grey areas, which leads us on to a very spicy and controversial topic, which we both felt uncomfortable talking about, but we did anyway. Hope you enjoy this episode, be sure to send us your feedback @apesontapepodcast on instagram. ❤️✌️
In this episode we discuss the recent controversy of Joe Rogan, the use of the N-word and cancel culture. Freddo opens up about his plan to leave Morzine and how the grass always seems greener, while Benji has a humorous take on the situation.
Benji is absent from this episode, this is a discussion between Freddo and Pete Davies, the guy that was there on the day of the accident. We discuss how it went down, from Pete's perspective, how the day unfolded after Freddo snowboarded off a cliff and the resulting injury that left him paralysed from the waist down. We talk about how it could have been worse, what could have been done differently, and how Pete feels about it 3 years later and if it has affected his life at all. Things get a bit emotional at the end, but this is a valuable conversation between two friends that shared a very traumatic experience.
Twenty Twenty DONE! This Episode starts off with a look back on twenty twenty one and all the things we have to be grateful for. The reasons we have for finding the silver lining and the hope it perpetuates. Then, it takes a turn for the more sinister. We delve into what the future might look for us earthlings. Will we follow the flock lead by our idiotic politicians and the power hungry Zuckerberg or can we quit our addiction to consuming and realise that mere compliance may well be the path to our end. Regular listeners may have noticed a rather abrupt hiatus from the podcast, that was unexpected. Life gets in the way sometimes, but we are BACK. We explain why we stopped, what we've been up to, and what to expect in the future. We discuss a recent medicinal ceremony we had, we unpack the autobiography of Will Smith with differing opinions, and also ponder on what God's therapist would be like. We hope your Christmas is filled with laughter, smiles and mince pies. May your New Year be full of growth, positivity and hope. This was one of our favourite episodes we've recorded, we reflect on Freddos reluctance to expand his comfort zone, while Benji drags him kicking and screaming on a boat ride that was just magical, plus Benji is beaming from his own experience involving boats and wakeboarding on the lake and the blessing of having wonderful, thoughtful friends. There is also a great video of him taking an almighty stack - which we will upload to our instagram @apesontapepodcast We also joke about of the juxtaposition of gurus who spout enlightened sermons, while being inherently flawed human beings, giving some rather hilarious examples. Can we look past people's personal flaws and still take their sage advice? Are they hypocrites, or just human? And, more importantly, are WE doing the same on our podcast? We delve into some introspection, honesty and "instagram vs reality" moments. Which brings us to the point of while we have blissful pictures of us on a boat, which will undoubtedly make wonderful instagram moments, Freddo opens up about how he has started talk therapy, through a platform called Better Help, and how it has helped him navigate the struggles he's been facing since the void left behind by his recent separation. It was a pleasure to talk about how affordable therapy can be, as it is usually the financial burden that can stop people seeking help. We also end on some hilarious anecdotes of Freddos one and only fight he got in when he was in his twenties, which relates to a wonderful story that Benji tells of Ram Dass and his martial arts instructor, which ends in a lot of laughter at our own expense. If you know someone who would benefit from, or would appreciate this podcast, please share it with them, word of mouth is always the best way to help this podcast grow. Benji & Freddo chat about their carefree pasts. If you could go back to the past would you really want to and could you really appreciate it. Are the suffering and worries of life worth the personal growth or would you swap it all for a trip back to a life of blissful ignorance. Freddo also tells Benji about two near death experiences he had, the dangers of everyday life, from the giant crane on a construction site to the tiny mosquito. They also discuss each others creative process. The ups, downs procrastination and the trophy of the finished piece. We love hearing from you, so if you want to continue the discussion, message us on Instagram @apesontapepodcast
Freddo surprises Benji with a piece of artwork he's been working on all week, inspired from their recent plant medicine ceremony. The ripples of positivity still emanate from that magical night and they both reminisce on the changes they continue to feel since the profound, enlightening experience with psychedelics. Benji is beyond stoked with his gift, and is overjoyed to see the world through the lens of love once again.
