In this powerful and deeply moving episode, Jonny shares what it's really like to wake up paralysed at 28 after a sudden stroke and how losing his body, career, and future plans forced him to rebuild his life from the ground up. He opens up about the shock of disability, the uncertainty of recovery, and the emotional toll of watching the life you expected disappear overnight. Alongside this, Jonny speaks candidly about the mental health battles that followed his physical recovery, including depression, identity loss, and learning how to live in a body that no longer worked the way it once did. He reflects on discipline, endurance, and the mindset shift that helped him move from survival to purpose, ultimately becoming the first disabled person to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole. This episode explores resilience, trauma, identity, and what it truly means to rebuild when everything familiar is gone. If you've experienced illness, injury, life-altering change, or are navigating grief for the person you used to be, this conversation will resonate deeply. Crisis What Crisis?

Robert Paylor was living the dream - a star rugby player at UC Berkeley competing for a national championship with his future mapped out perfectly. Then an illegal tackle shattered his spine and left him paralysed from the neck down. Doctors told him he'd never so much as lift a piece of pizza to his mouth – let alone walk or play sport – that's if he even survived the surgery. But Robert has a uniquely unbreakable mindset, and defied every medical prediction. Today he walks with support, is married to the love of his life, and has a baby on the way. This is a masterclass not only in perseverance and grit but in how to turn life's most tragic moments into your greatest purpose. Paylor is proof that how we respond to crisis matters far more than the crisis itself.Five lessons you'll learn:Control your mindset, not your circumstances. You can't control what happens to you, but you always have complete control over your response. Your positivity and willingness to fight is entirely up to you.Seek discomfort before crisis hits. Don't wait for life to become challenging before you start challenging yourself. Build your resilient foundation when times are good so you can stand stronger when storms come.Forgiveness is for you, not them. Holding onto anger and hate only hurts yourself. Forgiveness isn't about relieving guilt from those who wronged you - it's about removing negative attachments from your own life.Reward effort over accomplishment. When going through adversity, focus on the work you're putting in rather than just the results you're achieving. Effort is the one thing you can always control.Use perspective as your superpower. When struggling, ask yourself "compared to what?" Look at those who have less rather than those who seemingly have more. Healthy comparison is the key to happiness and reframes every challenge.

'We get very angry when rain disrupts our lives and brings our cities to a halt, but by the time the elections come around, we have forgotten how angry we were. Rarely, if ever, do these urban failures or the corruption and political ineptitude that lead to them swing an election. We vote instead for caste, for religion or for some conception of national interest. Governance simply does not matter. Politicians know this. So even as we rage and vent as we have been doing over the last few weeks, they chuckle to themselves and go back to counting their money. In the old days, they would at least offer token apologies. Now they don't even bother to do that. They just announce that schools will close for two days or urge us to work from home. And we let them get away with it. So let's not blame politicians alone. Let's ask ourselves why we don't demand more accountability from them.' says Author & ThePrint Columnist Vir Sanghvi. We begin with a slightly idiosyncratic - and highly stylised - discussion of how Ireland went from a nation of farmers to a high-tech economy, missing out on industrialisation. Our focus is on one very simple question: Having got Ireland to ‘here', why is the current crop of leaders incapable of dealing with known problems that have known solutions?Previous generations of politicians and civil servants eventually took big and brave decisions. Perhaps backbone discovery requires a crisis. But we have had plenty of those recently, and have at least one right now. And nothing ever changes. Where are the giants now? The ones who, like Alan Dukes - and others - many years ago, took great personal career risks to do the right thing?Has democracy reached its limits? Small, sometimes single-person, blocking coalitions can impede or stop any policy they don't like. NIMBYism on steroids. Many economies will recognise this one.Today's crop of very smart politicians have worked out that the route to success - or mere survival - is to never make a mistake, never annoy anyone. That means never taking a decision. Let others do that and watch them fall by the wayside. Rise without trace. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He was told he will never walk again! From that moment his life had changed forever and hearing the battle he has gone through the last 3 years left me feeling inspired, sad and proud of what he has been able to achieve. This episode is an awesome reminder to be truely grateful for everything you have in your life, as like in Michaels case it can literally be taken away from you overnight. David Holmes is the Harry Potter you’ve never heard of. That’s because he was Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double. At just 25 years old, David Holmes was living the dream. He was working on the biggest film franchise in the world, out partying, and fully immersed in a life of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. A former gymnast turned stuntman, he was in all the Harry Potter films—growing up alongside the cast, almost like a big brother to a group of pre-teens who would go on to become global stars. But while rehearsing a stunt for the final Harry Potter film—a move he’d done many times before—something went terribly wrong. David was flung into a wall and broke his neck. He now refers to his injury as “the gift that keeps on taking.” Over 15 years later, David has the use of only one arm. But as you’ll hear in this conversation, he doesn’t see himself as a victim. Life, he says, guarantees nothing. It’s what you do with what you’ve got that counts. And David is doing a lot. From writing a novel to producing a documentary with his friend Daniel Radcliffe, hosting a podcast, advocating for disability rights—and yes, having the best sex of his life. And, as Damian Thompson reports in this episode of Holy Smoke, it's by no means clear when this paralysis will end; it's significant that there has been so little talk of the Pope making a full recovery. Meanwhile, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State who isn't bothering to hide his ambition to succeed Francis, is continuing to forge alliances... Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

Send us a textThe extraordinary story of Darren Edwards, a remarkable Adaptive Adventurer  whose life took an unexpected turn. A climbing accident in North Wales left him paralyzed from the chest down, but Darren's story is far from one of defeat. Instead, he embraces a life full of resilience and ambition, challenging the limitations often associated with disability. With the backdrop of the Shropshire Hills fueling his spirit, Darren shares how he navigates life's challenges and opportunities, highlighting the profound advice he received that shifted his focus toward a future brimming with potential.I had the privilege of hearing Darren speak at the recent Entrepreneurs Circle's "Entrepreneurs Convention 2024" at the Birmingham ICC.Throughout our conversation, Darren reveals the power of everyday heroes who quietly persevere through their own battles, offering insight into how true strength lies not just in physical ability but in the heart and determination. We explore the importance of a supportive network, reflecting on his journey through adaptive expeditions and the influence of his wife and loved ones. Darren's story takes us to unexpected places, where missed opportunities, like the Paralympics, become blessings that shape a fulfilling path as an adventurer.Looking ahead, Darren's ambition to sit-ski to the South Pole in December 2025 is a testament to his unyielding will to inspire others. As we discuss themes of talent versus effort, the episode serves as a powerful reminder that resilience often surpasses natural ability. Darren's narrative invites listeners to believe in the impossible and find purpose through adversity. Have you watched the Paralympics? What about when you are taking part in or volunteering/spectating at  a running event or a triathlon? Have you ever observed the wheelchair triathletes? For them, it's swim, to hand cycle, to racing chair. Everything is about the upper body, and I've always been curious about how they take care of their shoulders, and what constitutes a rest day.   Today I'm chatting with Bret Crossley, a paratriathlete who lives in the Leeds area. Bret has been involved in triathlon since a motor bike racing accident in 2006 damaged his spine. He has been part of the British Triathlon talent programme, raced triathlons up to half Ironman distance, and competed in the London Marathon many times.  This is an inspirational conversation, and I hope you enjoy it. We chat about:   Motor bike racing days and competing in the Isle of Man  The accident, and how he coped in the immediate months after knowing he would never walk again. Finding wheelchair sport  Gaining inspiration from those worse off than yourself Bret's training and racing schedule Some challenges you might not have considered for chair racers and hand cyclists   To find out more about Bret and follow his progress, follow him on Twitter (X) - @BretC22   In the conversation Bret mentioned how he had raced at the Isle of Man. If you want to get a sense of the absolute concentration needed to race on the island, take a look at this video of Peter Hickman setting a fastest ever lap with an average speed of almost 137mph. Peter Hickman - Fastest ever lap of the Isle of Man TT   Bret also mentioned the Yorkshire Ability Triathlon that he is involved with.
