According to the Pew Research Center, Income Impact: without Social Security, nearly 40% of seniors would have incomes below the official poverty threshold. Furthermore, the Office of Budget and Policy Initiative notes that Social Security benefits are more modest than commonly perceived; as of February 2024, the average monthly Social Security retirement benefit was approximately $1,862, equating to about $22,344 annually. (Average payments for disabled workers and aged widows were lower.) For an individual with average earnings retiring at age 65 in 2024, Social Security replaces roughly 39% of previous income. This “replacement rate” has declined as the program's full retirement age increased from 65 in 2000 to 67 by 2022. Nancy L. Cavey is a distinguished attorney with over 39 years of experience specializing in disability law. Recognizing the complexities and significant impact of filing for disability benefits, Cavey has successfully guided numerous clients through the process with expertise and sensitivity. S.O.S. (Stories of Service) - Ordinary people who do extraordinary work
Send us a textA hard conversation worth having: we sit down with retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Gade to examine how the VA disability system, built with noble intent, can trap veterans in dependency and distort how America sees its warriors. Drawing on his combat wounds, hospital experience, academic work, and policy roles, Daniel makes a clear distinction between having a condition and becoming that condition—and shows how incentives, ratings, and advocacy ecosystems can push veterans toward the latter. We trace why claimed conditions increased across generations even as sustained direct combat remained limited for most. Daniel explains the politics behind expanding the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities and why ratings like sleep apnea at 50% undermine public trust when compared to losing an eye or a below-knee amputation. He challenges the emotional “1% served” shield, arguing that service is a voluntary civic duty already compensated with pay and benefits, not a lifetime blank check on taxpayers. Most importantly, we focus on fixes. Daniel proposes linking mental health compensation to active treatment so care drives recovery rather than pay driving identity. He urges redefining disability to align with activities of daily living and high standards like SSDI, while shifting resources from marginal payouts to high-impact transition: SkillBridge access without command vetoes, employer pipelines, reskilling, and entrepreneurship. We discuss how work sustains identity, how Individual Unemployability can backfire, and why every dubious claim delays care for those with amputations, TBI, sexual assault trauma, and acute PTSD.If you care about veterans' dignity, purpose, and long-term outcomes, this conversation offers a roadmap that prioritizes treatment, transition, and true service-connected disability. Listen, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a review with the reform you'd implement first.Stories of Service presents guests' stories and opinions in their own words, reflecting their personal experiences and perspectives. In this episode, we'll dive into the complicated topic of "Getting Long-Term Disability Benefits for Stevens-Johnson Syndrome."Most people expect Long-Term Disability insurance to step in when illness or injury prevents them from working. But for those living with the aftermath of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), the reality is often far more difficult. Triggered by common medications, SJS is a devastating condition that can cause blistering rashes, organ damage, and lasting complications like vision loss, chronic pain, and breathing problems. Recovery may take months, but the effects can last a lifetime, making work not just difficult, but impossible. That's when disability benefits should help. Instead, insurers often downplay the severity of SJS, deny claims by insisting patients have “recovered,” or ignore complications that make steady employment unsafe. In this episode of Winning Isn't Easy, disability law expert Nancy L. Cavey explains what it takes to file - and win - a Long-Term Disability claim with SJS. You'll learn what evidence matters most, how to document your limitations, which complications are commonly overlooked, and when to bring in legal help. If you or someone you love is battling the effects of SJS and struggling with a disability claim, this episode will give you the tools and strategies to fight back. Rachel Reeves Out of Her Depth and On the Freebie Take Again! In this video, Jon Gaunt dives deep into the latest political scandal involving Rachel Reeves, the Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer. As pressure mounts on the UK government to deliver a Spring Statement that satisfies both the markets and the Labour Party, Gaunty asks: Is Rachel Reeves really up to the task? Is she simply out of her depth in this high-stakes political environment? Jon also covers the breaking news that Rachel Reeves has been caught accepting freebies again — this time, tickets for Sabrina Carpenter. Why is she unable to buy her own tickets? It raises serious questions about her ability to lead and make tough decisions for the country. Looking back at last July, it's hard to believe that under Labour leadership, the government would be making decisions like cutting disability benefits, slashing overseas aid, reducing the civil service, tightening eligibility for the winter fuel allowance, and even raising National Insurance on employers. What's really going on in UK politics, and can Labour continue to be trusted with the nation's future? We'll start with the good news - Reform UK appears to be imploding. Nigel Farage has had a wildly public fallout with (now former) Reform MP Rupert Lowe, who was stripped of his whip and investigated by the police over alleged workplace bullying and “verbal threats” against the party chairman. As Reform flounders, the Government is busy making itself even more unpopular - if that's possible - by trailing a series of public sector cuts ahead of the Spring Budget. There are plans to cut half of the staff in NHS England and thousands of jobs in the civil service, not to mention impending benefit cuts. Keir Starmer is expected to announce £5 billion of cuts to personal independence payments - commonly known as PIPs - the main disability benefit. Mikey Erhardt from Disability Rights UK speaks to Nish and Coco about the devastating impact this could have on 3.6 million claimants across the UK.Next up, over the past few years we've seen waves of strikes by warehouse workers for the likes of Amazon, Tesco, Argos and others - but what exactly is it like to work in this algorithm-driven gig economy? Coco speaks to Laura Carreira, the director of a new film about the hidden lives of warehouse workers in the UK.Finally, here's something nobody wants to hear. King Charles has launched a personal playlist to mark this year's Commonwealth Day. Nish and Coco strike back with their own playlist.
