There's a row in the Labour Party about cutting the benefits paid to disabled people. Ministers say they're trying to manage a budget that's ballooning. That's partly because of more claims from the young and from people with mental health conditions. But others say that these payments are lifelines for people with both mental and physical disabilities. Join Raheel Ahmad & Qayyum Rashid for Thursday's show from 4-6pm where we will be discussing: Disability benefits and Fair Finance Disability benefits The UK government is planning major reductions to disability benefits as part of wider welfare reforms intended to manage rising costs. These cuts could lead to greater financial hardship, limited access to essential support, and disproportionately impact individuals with mental health conditions, especially those relying on Personal Independence Payments (PIP). Fair Finance Must we accept the poor service high street banks provide us? Why is it so much harder to get your money out of a bank than put it in? Why do banks make it so hard to borrow from them? These are some of the questions we would like to discuss as we look into whether there are fairer ways to finance. Join us between 5 and 6 as we go on to consider who our current banking system is excluding and what can be done to make it more accessible. Guests: Ismail Kaji (Parliamentary & Government Officer at Mencap) Fazilet Hadi (Head of policy at Disabilty rights UK) Helen Handzel (Sector Liaison Manager at StepChange) Emma Franklin-Keogh (Head of People and Compliance at Clockwise) Tom Woodroof (Co-founder of Mutual Credit Services) Producers: Rabeeta Khan, Maheda Neesir and Nabeela Shah

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves has defended the cuts to disability benefits announced in the Spring Statement. The Department for Work and Pensions' own assessment warned that the changes would push 250,000 people into poverty. And a new film audiences have called ‘intense' and ‘overwhelming' - the work of five artists, all autistic, who want us to experience the world as they do.
Rachel Reeves Out of Her Depth and On the Freebie Take Again! In this video, Jon Gaunt dives deep into the latest political scandal involving Rachel Reeves, the Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer. As pressure mounts on the UK government to deliver a Spring Statement that satisfies both the markets and the Labour Party, Gaunty asks: Is Rachel Reeves really up to the task? Is she simply out of her depth in this high-stakes political environment? Jon also covers the breaking news that Rachel Reeves has been caught accepting freebies again — this time, tickets for Sabrina Carpenter. Why is she unable to buy her own tickets? It raises serious questions about her ability to lead and make tough decisions for the country. Looking back at last July, it's hard to believe that under Labour leadership, the government would be making decisions like cutting disability benefits, slashing overseas aid, reducing the civil service, tightening eligibility for the winter fuel allowance, and even raising National Insurance on employers. What's really going on in UK politics, and can Labour continue to be trusted with the nation's future? This video provides a sharp analysis of the UK political landscape, offering debate, free speech, and insights into the actions of Rachel Reeves. Can Stormont find £150m to mitigate welfare cuts? Could health reform be a path to addressing a reliance on long-term disability benefits? Frank spoke to Prof Deirdre Heenan and Dr Ciara Fitzpatrick Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Support for Reform UK continues to rise and is now at its highest recorded level in Scotland, a new poll has found. Carried out by Survation, the survey predicts Nigel Farage's right-wing populist movement could return as many as 14 MSPs next year. Down south, the Labour party has announces a series of welfare cuts for disability benefits. Chris McCall, John Ferguson and Douglas Dickie discuss the latest news from the political world in the Planet Holyrood podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We'll start with the good news - Reform UK appears to be imploding. Nigel Farage has had a wildly public fallout with (now former) Reform MP Rupert Lowe, who was stripped of his whip and investigated by the police over alleged workplace bullying and “verbal threats” against the party chairman. As Reform flounders, the Government is busy making itself even more unpopular - if that's possible - by trailing a series of public sector cuts ahead of the Spring Budget. There are plans to cut half of the staff in NHS England and thousands of jobs in the civil service, not to mention impending benefit cuts. Keir Starmer is expected to announce £5 billion of cuts to personal independence payments - commonly known as PIPs - the main disability benefit. Mikey Erhardt from Disability Rights UK speaks to Nish and Coco about the devastating impact this could have on 3.6 million claimants across the UK.Next up, over the past few years we've seen waves of strikes by warehouse workers for the likes of Amazon, Tesco, Argos and others - but what exactly is it like to work in this algorithm-driven gig economy? Coco speaks to Laura Carreira, the director of a new film about the hidden lives of warehouse workers in the UK.Finally, here's something nobody wants to hear. King Charles has launched a personal playlist to mark this year's Commonwealth Day. Nish and Coco strike back with their own playlist. Britain is becoming sicker, with a sustained increase in levels of ill-health and disability. This creates financial challenges for families, and a fiscal challenge for the Government, with spending on incapacity and disability benefits forecast to rise from £40 billion today to £60 billion by the end of the Parliament. Everyone agrees that the current system is not working. But no-one can agree on how to change it. The Government will need to break that stalemate in its upcoming Green Paper.

With over half a million more Brits economically inactive compared to pre-pandemic, concerns grow about the UK's economic potential amid labor shortages. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced cracking down on disability benefits, claiming exploitation of the system. This week's IEA podcast asks: Where are the missing workers? Host Matthew Lesh and guest Prof. Len Shackleton explore the spike in long-term sickness inactivity, especially among younger people. They analyze whether disability benefits are being exploited or if socioeconomic factors like mental health, drug abuse, and NHS backlogs are root causes. The pair also examine potential solutions from overhauling welfare incentives to boosting productivity through upskilling. Shackleton provides historical context on the "deserving" vs "undeserving" poor debate framing this complex policy challenge. Tune in for insights on a critical economic issue.

In this episode: social security, disability, calculating social security, claiming social security, and due diligence. This week we are joined by listener and owner of Financial Security Advocates Dennis Shapiro, to talk thru some of the insights and misconceptions surrounding Social Security Benefits, and what factors and resources you should consider while approaching retirement. The beauty of FI is that it opens up opportunities for you to retire early, but oftentimes we don't consider how retiring early or even starting your own small business can impact your Social Security. While there is no true way of mastering the system to get the most benefit, there are many ways to prepare and plan in order to get the most out of your social security benefits! Remember, these benefits are not just safety nets when it comes time to retire, but can be an additional tool for investment that keeps you comfortable in your FI.
