What do an A-list actor, a four-star Navy admiral, and a world-famous magician have in common? Meditations by Marcus Aurelius has profoundly shaped each of their lives—proof that a Roman emperor's private reflections still resonate 2,000 years later. In today's episode, Ryan speaks with actor Patrick Dempsey, director Francis Ford Coppola, Professor Jennifer Baker, magician Derren Brown, bestselling author Donald Robertson, Admiral William McRaven, and voice actor/musician Troy Baker about their personal connections to Meditations.
This week Andrew cries because of golf, Katy Perry has ruined the mystery of space travel and Derren Brown is a nasty little man.
My guest today is my former teammate Vizi Andrei, founder of The Sovereign Artist program and author of Sovereign Artist: Meditations on Lifestyle Design. Vizi's journey has been anything but conventional. After dabbling in various creative projects, he realized that the internet offers a unique opportunity: the freedom to take countless small risks without catastrophic consequences. He built The Sovereign Artist program to help creators step away from the toxic hustle culture and build sustainable, meaningful lives rooted in creativity, deep work, and sacred leisure. His insights into Slow Living, the Sicilian Dream, and embracing experimentation over optimization can help one break free from comparison traps. He joins me to discuss the dangers of chasing unrealistic benchmarks of success, the myths of modern productivity, how to unlock creative freedom, and MUCH more! I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. World-renowned illusionist and mentalist Derren Brown joins Ryan for a deep dive into his connection with Stoic philosophy. Derren shares how he first discovered Stoicism, how his perspective on Marcus Aurelius and the philosophy has evolved over the years, and the life-changing lessons it has taught him about happiness.Derren Brown's groundbreaking UK television career began in 2000 with Mind Control, and since then, he has captivated audiences with mind-bending feats—from playing Russian Roulette live on air to leading a national séance and even immobilizing viewers in their own homes.Derren is the first magician in history to tour globally with eight sold-out one-man shows. Adam is joined by guest hypnotist Turan Mirza, a former software engineer who became fascinated with hypnosis after watching Derren Brown. Turan talks about how his first experience doing hypnosis with a shop worker gave him the confidence to take his skills to the general public and how street hypnosis can help hypnotherapists better in the therapy room. For more information on Turan visit: https://www.feel-good.today/ Adam and Turan will both be presenting at the Irish Hypnotherapy Conference in Dublin in April - tickets can be purchased here: https://irishhypnotherapyconference.ie/ More Info on Turan: All about Turan Mirza & Feel Good Hypnosis No business consists of just one person, there is always a support network behind everyone. My name is Turan Mirza, the name is Turkish and I was born and grew up in Northern Ireland.Feel Good Hypnosis is my business name. Within the business I'm the only full time hypnotist covering personal change (hypnotherapy), providing talks on hypnosis and training people through hypnosis and many other related techniques. What's with the name? It was only a matter of time before I formalised the art of hypnosis into Feel Good Hypnosis, helping people overcome anxiety, depression and many life changing issues through the use of hypnosis, NLP, Provocative Change Work, IEMT, EFT and many other related tools to improve the quality of peoples lives.Given my name is Turan and, I'll be the first to admit it, not everyone knows how to pronounce it, not to mention my surname Mirza, when it came to setting up a business I wanted an easy to say name that communicated what I did. At the time it was not just myself, as I said Jonathan was with me and Daryl was starting to learn from us. So I did not want to call the business “Turan Mirza Hypnosis” or “Turan and Son's Hypnosis”, I'm a proud father and they do sound nice to me but in this modern world of the internet I wanted something people could spell without checking. Hence we created “Feel Good Hypnosis”.If you are speaking to me and you're not sure how to say my name, firstly I respond to anything as I'm used to a range or pronunciation. But I advise people to phonetically pronounce Turan as ‘2-ran' and Mirza as Meer-za. Hypnosis Around the World I have hypnotised people in a wide range of locations from Las Vegas and Houston Texas, to Edinburgh Scotland and all over Northern Ireland. Training Others I now teach others how hypnosis works and how they can use it to improve their lives and others. You can see some images here of others learning and you can see a short video of hypnosis training in action if you click on the image.Check out my training page for full details on how you can learn this wonderful skill. How did I get started? My interest in hypnosis started many years ago, starting as merely a curiosity after performing a few simple magic tricks for my four children. While researching a trick I came across hypnosis. As I learned more and more, starting to attend professional training, I entertained at personal social events like family birthday parties and at Christmas. It was at this time Jonathan joined me in entertaining people. It was not long before word spread and we were asked to perform at events. When did you move from hypnotist to hypnotherapist? As our popularity grew we were asked more and more about the good hypnosis could do to change peoples lives - “can you help me stop smoking?” or “I'm having trouble sleeping, can you help?”. It was at this point that my interest in the change work side of hypnosis evolved. Learning different techniques for working with adults and children, and studying and becoming certified in specialist areas like Sexual Freedom Hypnosis and Dental Hypnosis, known as Hypnodontics. I have trained with many of the top names in hypnosis both in entertainment and change work / therapy Adam's course Hypnotic Wealth can be found here: https://www.adamcox.co.uk/hypnotic-wealth.html Coming Soon - The Hypnotists's Secret Circle: Adam will soon be launching a new low-cost membership to access his entire hypnosis archive without the intro, outro, and explanation and an exclusive community only for members. VYS0047 | The Weird Review Of The Year 2024 - Show Notes [Caution: This episode contains an extreme weariness for bullshit that some listeners may find triggering] 2024 was a tough year, weird but tough. And looking back over it doesn't make it any better. In what amounts to a rapid and inexorable descent into madness Hine and Buckley pick apart the weird and, frankly, fucking dystopian year that was 2024. Bouncing between jaded despair and hysterical mania the Vayse boys mull over the topics that dominated 2024: UFOs, Artificial Intelligence and Elon Fucking Musk. Whilst stumbling around in the intoxicating embrace of the seemingly endless darkness they also uncover strange stories of interconnected dreams, robot dogs with flame throwers, robot faces with living skin, bowls of goo with pong skills, plots to genetically engineer super-sheep, a surprising number of goblin attacks and perhaps, maybe, possibly a giant lake dwelling cow...? It's not always easy to tell the difference between objective truth and what we believe to be true. Separating facts from opinions, according to skeptic Michael Shermer, theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss, and others, requires research, self-reflection, and time. Separating facts from opinions, according to skeptic Michael Shermer, theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss, and others, requires research, self-reflection, and time. Recognizing your own biases and those of others, avoiding echo chambers, actively seeking out opposing voices, and asking smart, testable questions are a few of the ways that skepticism can be a useful tool for learning and growth. As Derren Brown points out, being "skeptical of skepticism" can also lead to interesting revelations and teach us new things about ourselves and our psychology. Read Michael Shermer's latest book "Skeptic: Viewing the World with a Rational Eye" at https://amzn.to/3c7vP58 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: LAWRENCE KRAUSS: I like to keep an open mind but not so open that my brains fall out. And that's the key point. We have to skeptically assess the information we receive. We can't be gullible because when we get a lot of information, it's absolutely certain that some of that information is wrong. And so we have to always filter what we get. And we have to ask ourselves the following question: "How open does my brain have to be to accept that information? Does it have to fall out?" And by that, I mean when someone tells you something you have to ask "Is this consistent with my experience? Is it consistent with the experience of other people around me?" And if it isn't, then probably there's a good reason to be skeptical about it; it's probably wrong. If it makes predictions that also appear to be in disagreement with things that you observe around you, you should question it. And so we should never take anything on faith. That's really the mantra of science, if you want, that faith is the enemy of science. We often talk about a loss of faith in the world today. You don't lose anything by losing faith. What you gain is reality. And so skepticism plays a key role in science simply because we also are hard-wired to want to believe. We're hard-wired to want to find reasons for things. In the savanna in Africa, the trees could be rustling and you could choose to say, "Well, there's no reason for that." Or, "Maybe it's due to a lion." And those individuals who thought there might be no reason, never lived long enough to survive to procreate. And so it's not too surprising, we want to find explanations for everything. And we create them if we need to, to satisfy ourselves, because we need to make sense of the world around us. And what we have to understand is that what makes sense to the universe, is not the same as what makes sense to us. And we can't impose our beliefs on the universe. And the way we get around that inherent bias is by constantly questioning both ourselves and all the information we receive from others. That's what we do in science and it works beautifully in the real world as well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Derren Brown is one of our leading conjurers, specializing in mentalism, the illusion of reading people's minds. I interviewed him for my Channel 4 TV documentary, Enemies of Reason. We talked about cold reading and how the technique is used by frauds who pretend to communicate with the dead, as well as by honest conjurers. Derren himself is an honest conjurer and a sharp critic of charlatans who abuse their skills, lucratively pretending to supernatural powers, which of course, they don't have. I have just listened to the interview again, and I must say I find it one of the more interesting interviews I have done. See if you agree.

You will suffer in life. But you don't have to break down. ‘Resilience' is the idea of being able to withstand hardship. ‘Antifragility' goes one step further. The term, first coined by author Nassim Taleb, describes systems or entities that don't just withstand adversity, but actually benefit and grow stronger from it. In many ways, antifragility is central to our physical health and development. Bones, for example, get stronger when subjected to stress, and the immune system requires exposure to threats in order to develop properly. We can also curate mental antifragility to enhance our lives, find happiness, and develop lifelong learning. From Jonathan Haidt to Derren Brown, this video explores the multitude of ways that we can think about antifragility, and how we can use it to better our lives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ❍ About The Well ❍ Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life's biggest questions, and that's why they're the questions occupying the world's brightest minds. Gather around the fireplace, solar friends. Pull up a seat at the bar. On the next, Probably True Solar Stories, we're going to tell a solar fable. It's a fairytale. A hero's journey sort of thing. With a Texas accent. (Forgive me in advance.)It's about a young, ambitious solar installer who seeks her fortune to be the most successful solar installer in all the land. And like many fables, our ambitious installer meets a wise guide--or in this case, a wise couple--who teaches her about The Solar Way, a solar-inspired guide to living life on The Solar Coaster. True Solar TakeawaysThis episode doesn't have many solar facts about the solar industry. The main takeaway is that the solar biz has many ups and downs and policy twists and turns that people have called it "The Solar Coaster." The people riding the solar coaster can get discouraged, including me. To help smooth out the ups and downs, I've read some Taoism and Stoicism text and turned some of my learnings into" The Solar Way":Be warm. Shine like the sun.Let go of broken solar panels. Be interconnected. The sun rises every day. Be as consistent. The sun sets every day. This too shall pass. If you're interested in learning more about Taoism and Stoicism, here are a few audio and text resources:The Daily Stoic. Through his website, podcast, and books, Ryan Holiday offers modern insights through ancient Stoic wisdom. Although the Stoic philosophy is very old, Holiday keeps it simple and relevant to the way people live today. Check out his free daily podcast and daily email. Of course, his books are a great resource, as well. The Tao of Daily Life by Derik Lin is a well-deserved bestseller. It teaches the principles of Taoism through the classic Taoist and Buddhist fables. Although the stories are still set in ancient China, Lin translates these stories in a way that is very accessible for our modern world. Then he cites a passage from the Tao te Ching and explains the wisdom behind each story. This book and other David Lin books are also available in audio and digital forms.Happy: Why More or Less Everything is Absolutely Fine by Derren Brown. You may know Derren Brown as an international illusionist, but he's also a professed Stoic. Happy is his easy-to-read guide to happiness using examples from his shows, his illusions, and from his own life. He often cites Stoic texts, but it's not a book about Stoicism. Check out his many YouTube videos to see his stage performances and British TV shows. ----- Visit ProbablyTrueSolar.com to sign up for the newsletter to learn about new episodes and live solar storytelling events. Today we welcome the incredible Derren Brown to the pod. Hot from his West End Show 'Unbelievable', Derren fantasises about running his own cafe and how he has a favourite spatula. We then discuss how many Derren's there actually are and share nostalgic tales of shoplifting, most notably when Derren managed to set off the alarm in Harrods trying to steal a Luther Vandross Cassette. Due to his award winning Cha-Cha, I try to convince him to go on Strictly, while he explains why British crime dramas just don't cut it. I imply that magic is akin to thieving as he explains how false memory alters our perception of past events. Derren also lifts the lid on some classic episodes of 'Trick or Treat' and gives us his own perception of what it's like to be famous. And last but not least, tells us how he blanked Charlize Theron in L.A.Please Follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialDerren's socialsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/derrenbrownTwitter: https://twitter.com/DerrenBrownFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/DerrenBrownYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@OfficialDerrenBrownProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Sean F. Smith is a writer, a magician, and a games designer. He's written for critically acclaimed products like Odd Jobs and Moonlight on Roseville Beach, coordinates games for charity in South London as part of the Role Play Haven, and will not say Macbeth in a theatre (not even a lecture theatre). Sean's work has been growing and growing and now permeates lots of my favorite game universes, including quite a few award-winning ones. In this chat we talked about how his experiences outside of gaming, including his work as a illusionist and mind-reader, influences the way he creates TTRPG! We also talked about how ghost stories seem universal, how sometimes we can perceive the Universe conspiring in our favor and against us. We talked about comedy in relation both to games and magic. We get deep into the meaning of weird, we talk art, creativity, process, all that jazz. We go deep, and it gets weird! So listen up and get weird with us! Check out Seans's Links! He will explain why he still finds Christianity the most compelling explanation for life, the universe and everything. And why, regardless of belief or background, we should all welcome the conversation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Yanni addresses the SNL situation, the manipulation advertisers use to hack our subconscious, the important summit that happened on X with Andrew Tate, Elon Musk, and Alex Jones, and why anti-Semites haven't targeted the number of Jews who have won Nobel Peace Prizes in the sciences. If you enjoy hearing about the power of magic and challenge of creativity, I recommend you check out my conversation with the illusionist, Derren Brown, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVblCpr_qAc He's walked on water, flown and now buried himself alive, but could the greatest magic trick of Dynamo life be his escaping from his demons? Dynamo is a British magician who first entered the spotlight in 2004. His TV series ‘Dynamo: Magician Impossible' attracted over 250 million viewers and ran from 2011 to 2014, earning him the Best Entertainment Programme award in 2012 and 2013. He became the first magician to headline arenas such as the London O2 and Sydney's Rod Laver arena. In 2013, he stepped away from the limelight to recover from serious health issues. And so we finally reach the end of this podcast odyssey with the longest episode of the 4-part series... The main topics here are fame (linking neatly to LALO episode 40) and the interestingly similar trajectory it shares with money in terms of how its escalation affects -or doesn't affect- a person's happiness, and then the granddaddy of all topics- death. There's also some talk about mindfulness meditation here, offering another callback to a previous LALO episode. Once again Derren Brown turns to some ancient wisdom to illustrate his points in the book, but there are also some fascinating modern takes on fame, death and a few other things. As always your humble host weighs in with his thoughts too, as well as offering a slightly unusual greeting of the season. It's hard to summarise the many possible takeaways from a 6-hour analysis of a 500-page book, but with my life coach's hat on I can only strongly suggest a focus on excellence and full attention to tasks, including the tricky one of living itself. We also need to understand that we are telling ourselves stories all the time, often about events that we have little or no control over and with little evidence to back up our conclusions. Life is hard but can actually be far simpler than we make it if we can limit these stories and try to relax and live with grace and compassion, both for ourselves and for others. I sincerely hope you enjoy this final episode and have enjoyed the ones before it. If so, please subscribe, like, share etc... See you in 2024! The next part of this epic journey through Derren Brown's book ‘Happy: Why More or Less Everything Is Absolutely Fine' and the general topic of happiness takes us further into fate and accepting the downsides of life while finding its way back to some core themes of the book. These include our construction of narratives with little evidence, catastrophising and ‘mind-reading' (ours, not Derren's!). We also look at those old enemies anger, fear & guilt, with a little help from our friends the Stoics, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and others. There's a lot more along the way and I humble believe you will get a lot out of this if you listen with attention and an open mind and try to digest the occasionally complex but always accessible ideas in the book and the episode. Derren Brown amazes audiences with his extraordinary illusions and showmanship, as a mentalist and magic creator. He captivates with his charm and is also disarmingly forthright and emotionally eloquent which is evident in his writing, podcast Bootcamp and painting. Have you ever got drunk with a Vicar in a Vicarage? Would you believe it, that's Dominic Byrne's weekend plans! It's the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Podcast and this week it's been all lads-lads-lads as Pippa has been away on her jollies. Joining Chris in the studio was Derren Brown to talk about his West End show that he is not, in fact, performing in, and Matt Lucas, who reckoned Chris would have smashed the vicar in his new musical novel (it's not quite how it sounds). Chef Tom Kerridge called into the studio and, in classic Chris fashion, had his new recipe book pulled apart. I mean, a pie should have fully enclosed pastry sides, right? New host of The Late Late Show (the irish one, not James Corden's replacement) Patrick Kielty also came by the studio as well as everyone's favourite Eastenders actor turned gang fighter Ross Kemp. In amongst all of those guests, Chris found time to wage WAR on LBC's Nick Ferrari over false allegations of stolen Kedgeree. No presenters were harmed in this war, but we are still suffering from the stench… Anyway, this week we also had: Chris does magicDom finds a new favourite song in a supermarketUnheard bits from James' Birthday SurpriseEnjoy! The Chris Moyles Show on Radio XWeekdays 6:30-10am

Sam Harris speaks with Derren Brown about his work as a “psychological illusionist.” They discuss the power of hypnosis, the power of expectations, the usefulness of Stoic philosophy, and other topics. Derren Brown began his UK television career in December 2000 with a series of specials called Mind Control. In the UK his name is now pretty much synonymous with the art of psychological manipulation. Amongst a varied and notorious TV career, Derren has played Russian Roulette live, convinced middle-managers to commit armed robbery, led the nation in a séance, stuck viewers at home to their sofas, successfully predicted the National Lottery, motivated a shy man to land a packed passenger plane at 30,000 feet, hypnotized a man to assassinate Stephen Fry, and created a zombie apocalypse for an unsuspecting participant after seemingly ending the world. He has also written several best-selling books and – a first in the history of magic – has toured with eight sell-out one-man stage shows. The shows have garnered a record-breaking five Olivier Award nominations for Best Entertainment, and won twice. This means Derren has had the largest number of nominations and wins for one-person shows in the history of the Awards. His 2017 US debut show SECRET won the New York Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical experience and is planning a Broadway return in 2019. His Latest book is Happy: Why More or Less Everything is Absolutely Fine. Maya Shankar (@slightchangepod) is a cognitive scientist who once aspired to become a career violinist, and is the creator, executive producer, and host of the podcast A Slight Change of Plans. What We Discuss with Maya Shankar: How Maya's love for the violin and sense of playfulness — not flawless technique or prodigious talent — gave her the opportunity to learn from Itzhak Perlman at Juilliard School of Music when she was just nine years old. The unfortunate mishap that derailed Maya's aspirations to become a career violinist and forced her to experience what psychologists call identity foreclosure — during which she realized she had built her life around the violin and didn't have a plan B. How Maya came to understand that human connection is the quality that attracted her to the violin in the first place, and adopted this as her throughline as she's pivoted to careers in academia, public policy, and podcasting. Why Maya advocates for approaching change with humility so we understand its nuanced and multifaceted nature instead of being disappointed by inaccurately optimistic predictions. What you can do to cultivate a healthier relationship with life's uncertainties and roll with the changes they will inevitably force you to make. And much more...
